When I was a kid I was absolutely scared of the caves. I would rush stairs as soon as I could find them. That sound of a goat and baby crying, the distorted bass, combined with the claustrophobic atmosphere and plants on the wall gave me chills.
I'd love to see a remake of the the first game that fixes a lot of the exploits/bugs and adds versatility to the gameplay while retaining all of the music, the atmosphere and overall feel of the original version.
Most fitting OST in any videogame ever. There's something truely insane about the start, like something purely evil trying to come to you to take possession of your soul. Which is exactly what happens actually. Like a headache coming from the hell
I love this song too, but I don't understand why other fans seem to like it best. In my opinion, it's the least creepy of the four labyrinth songs in this game.
@@warrioroflight6872 The electric guitar perfectly fits the game's mood imo as if the game is telling you shit is getting real, and the acoustics at 3:40 are hauntingly beautiful
This is of such insane quality... Can you guys remember being young and playing Diablo 1? I can. Such things just don't exist anymore. Hail Blizzard North.
This game's soundtrack is a masterpiece, and this is by far the most unsettling track. It evokes terror, despair and madness, all at once. If they are truly serious about recapturing the spirit of this game in Diablo 4, they have to go back to the dark ambient genre for the soundtrack. Moreover, the player should feel weak and underpowered during the first single player playthrough. Let multiplayer be about superpowers and flashy items and single player about survival horror, similar to the first game.
Given the planned high online interaction weaved into the game, I'm already concerned for that possibility. "Embrace the darkness" was their lingo, and yet I don't think they can, certainly not anymore. Even if they did, it would be more along the lines of 2, not the original, which was a deviance from the beginning in the first place.
@@commodus232 I think you're right. Post-WoW Blizzard is a different company than the one that produced Diablo 1 and 2, Warcraft 1-3 and Starcraft. That was their golden age, and they will probaly never reach that level of quality again. I hope Diablo 4 turns out to be a decent game, and if not, my Steam library is full of good games I have never completed.
@@kjetilhansen5363 It doesn't help that Diablo's branch was almost literally a different company between D2 and 3 when Blizzard North shut down. "South", so it was called, could only ever be credited for approval and cinematics. Once North was gone, it was all them. There was a change in the company's culture to be sure, but the heart of the original creations was gone. Although, even still, North was going to take Diablo down a different route than its predecessors anyways (from what I heard they were musing an MMO idea).
IDK about D4 having world bosses and multiplayer stuff like that. I think evolving diablo is going to change/ruin it. Its about the single player experience not making it a call of duty click fight.
Always thought the catacombs was the eeriest damn music in the game. That laughter with all that creepy guitar scared the shit out of me when i was a kid
@@TheCruelbeans i was 10 when i played this game on a recommendation from a friend's dad. this game was beyond terrifying, especially the soundtrack. i still remember literally running away from the computer when first i heard "AH, FRESH MEAT!" i paused first. thank god . . . and thank god for fire wall 😂🔥
@@TheCruelbeans does anyone ever to toe to toe with the butcher at that point and survive?? i mean, once you're in melee range, there's no finesse? you just click and hope for the best 😂
Ah the memories....I finished it several times back in 1998 as a kid. When alone at home at evening with all lights off and all those creepy sounds coming from the Soundblaster. It was creepy and entertaining af, modern games don't have so much atmosphere.
This was a cool moment in the game because it was the first time the environment changed from the gothic, cathedral/dungeon look, besides a minor quest involving poison. There was lava in the caves and it really felt like you were descending into hell. Hell itself is probably the only part of Diablo that didn't live up to the buildup, despite the difficult enemies.
Diablo 1: Best Atmosphere Diablo 2: Best Gameplay Diablo 3:..... Best... ??? DIablo Immortal: Best Money Milker It's sad to see how far Diablo has begun to fallen.
And now that Diablo 4 has released, which was supposed to be the game that took Diablo back to its dark atmosphere, I'm even more hopeless about the future of the series. Oh well, at least I'll always have Diablo 1 and 2 to go back to.
Those opening drums always sounded like wooden cupboards to me as a child... imagine, somewhere in the depths of the labyrinth, ol spikey boi just can't get em closed all the way. Sounds like he's really getting frustrated for a moment there, too :o
As much as I love D2, it is way too streamlined and commerce, D1 is the game that really stuck to my memory. (Never thought I will say that). Lets hope they give it the same treatment as D2 some day.
Imagine in a spiritual fantasy universe, if Im a living ghost spirit and doing a ghost house party this would be one the music that I will bumping on. Hell yeah 🤘
2:27 i swear this could be the soundtrack to "The Exorcist" ... just imagine this track was playing when Regan was transforming ... holy shit ... horror pure
I would watch my brother play as the warrior who becomes the dark wanderer in following game back then. I was on my own come middle/high school to sit down and play through. The ost for the game rules.
i was a child when i play this game like many of you i think and it was very nice to discover a game like this i remember i ve played the demo a lot with the butcher "ha.... Fresh meat!"
It's the best. It reminds me of the "Hell" theme from Worms Armageddon as well, but minus the evil laughter and crying voices. Good dark ambience in games elevates everything.
with the release of the warcraft movie, they should now make a rated r diablo movie with all sort of crazy bloody shit like the first conan the barbarian or the 13th warrior but with monsters. and make it a dark movie and not one of those lord of the rings style rip off war movies.
Actually, Jesse, the facade was christian, but the mythology was pretty steeped in Norse mythology. Also, I think the audience that knows WoW lore is torn on the movie: some thought it was an awesome gorefest. Then, people like me, who thought it was an awful fantasy action film. Maybe I just wanted to see Lothar act like the paragon he was. Anyway, I was rather crushed when they made the Dark Wanderer into Leoric's son, canon. I always really loved that you could just play a demoralized, defeated soldier who turns into a hero. That's the movie I want to see.
Actually, i think Diablo would turn out even better if it was an series. Call netflix on that. An real treck through the bottom of hell to try and defeat evil itself protagonized by not only by Aidan, Jazreth and Moreina, but also by the local populace left in Tristram. The first season could focus on the facts of Diablo 1, and go more in depth in the characters. I mean, i always imagine that Ogden and the others were slowly going mad by the course of the game, not giving up on hope only because of the three and Deckard Cain's presence. Not only that, but the main trio would also slowly, but surely getting madder and madder, until the point were they simply snap. Because c'mon: diving into hell itself every single time must be REALLY sanity consuming.
I don't have much faith in adaptations, but there is great potential in that. Although, I bet it would make an even better anime series. That way you don't have to rely on CG for all the demons.
+fohstick a I agree with that. Diablo 2 was probably a better game in terms of gameplay and balance etc, but the atmosphere in the first game is unmatched.
D3 is still an amazing game.... but the first one with hellfire was just so fucking great back in the 90s. D2 was very very good.... I also play Path of exile.
One day when I went in for my high school computer science class alongside quake which was always on the PCs there was a new game called Diablo. So when we stayed after school to LAN and eventually got to the caves I thought for sure this was done by Trent Reznor. This was very much NINs sound during the mid to late 90s and was surprised it wasn’t.
Remastering this game completely like they did to 2 would be my dream. Unlike the other games, it had as much of a survival horror aesthetic as an action rpg.
My brother primarily played this game and Diablo II but I'm the one who primarily plays Diablo III. I think the first game was one of the few that gave either of us the creeps. =/
Diablo main menu music - An army of demonic and evil spirit parade be like.. Tristram music - A strange, lone wolf or complicated human's life who want to calm and chilling on the outside at night but something danger & tragedy are getting near be like.. Cave music - Demonic Halloween party festival music be like with a hellish guitar kicks in the dark be like.. Dungeon/Cathedral music - Dark ritual and horrific sacrificial be like.. Cathacomb music - An atrocious smell and horrifyingly miserable sound of the spirit of the dead inside the hellish underworld be like... Hell music - An unimaginable boiling sound of sea of fire & lava with unreal intense heat and feeling while demon at the gate of hell & inside hell are shouting and singing be like...
Bathed in rage you think you're winning at 1:07, but at 2:18 the Hidden tell you otherwise... the evil of this place is ancient and all-encompassing and is not so easily vanquished by one brave soul. With this understanding terror slowly seeps in and your fighting spirit starts to dwindle...
Diablo had some masterful music I mean it might be better than D2 even. I think D2 is the best game of its kind though ever made. Totally refined and perfected everything. Diablo 1 the game has some gameplay flaws.
Diablo 2 is a near perfect game beyond the fact that the setting turned majorly into a hack and slash where it was more action-oriented. It did not perfectly capture the existential dread of battling infernal horrors that should not exist.
darkleaves yes this was when diablo was possessing the kid Albrecht so the noises are made by him which we can hear upto caves he was waking up in a new body
These freaing whispers freak me out...on another note, the guitar are drums are really awesome. I really Wish that if D4 is ever gonna exist it's gonna be Horror again, but I seriously doubt it x( . Blizzard needed Fresh blood into video gaming, and nowaday kids prefer whacko Aoe spells or shining armor and ofc Massive Kills. Instead of the creepy, misterious, adventourous and challenging atmospheres. D1 was brilliant : Scary, misterious, challenging. A pure classic. D2 is the best of the franchise imo. Even though the Runes farming and searching for some Uniques is a goddamn pain. D3 could've been good, ad to some extent IS but it's still the worst of the 3 games especially in terms of atmosphere and rather predictable story.
