Diablo 2: Resurrected is a remaster of a game that come out nearly two decades ago. The original release, as well as it's following expansion, is what many consider to be the crown jewel of the dungeon crawler, ARPG genre. It's grim aesthetics and loot-focused gameplay enhanced upon the original Diablo, and this remaster - Created in tandem by Blizzard and Vicarious Visions - Raised a question upon its release a year ago in 2021: How well does it translate the mechanics and presentation of a game that originally released at the turn of the century? Let's find out.

Another one that could've been finished some time ago, and my own procrastination continues to get the best of me. C'est la vie. On the bright side, I don't expect to have that kind of "I need to do this" problem nearly as much going forward. Hopefully. We'll see.

RU-vid was having some serious issues (Apparently) processing the HD version of the video, for some reason (It shouldn't take upwards of 12 hours to process the native resolution of this video, let's be honest), so I had to do some shenanigans to get it fixed: The results of which should be available and properly uploaded soon. Here's hoping.

I swear, if I still had access to a desktop with D2 on it in high school I would be even more of a teenage disappointment to my dad than I already was. Not because of the game, but because I wouldn't be doing anything else.

I really dislike the DIII and DIV smorgasbord of numbers and flashing signs, DII was much cleaner in this regard and the graphical revamp was done tastefully. I would have liked a remastered version of Diablo I too.

At some point the ever-increasing numbers kind of lose any meaning. If they did do a remaster of Diablo, I'd be interested in seeing if they'd add in the Hellfire expansion if only for completion's sake if nothing else.

The original d2 designers & programmers all left Blizzard aft the company was aquire by Activision. D3 was completed by entire new teams.

I find that I prefer the graphics, sound and animation of the original. Legacy mode in the remaster is emulated and isn't what the original actually looks like

I didn't know that, I guess it's a good thing I've always had the original + LoD on a USB pretty much since I bought it. Plus there was the whole Reforged debacle.

@@ST0RYTEL13R Yeah you can still purchase the original game under the "DLC" section of the remaster for $20 but I have it on disk. You can however easily transfer the save from the original game to the remaster, I have to give them credit for that, but yeah if you want to play with the original graphics and everything the best thing to do is play the original game.

There are several neglected things which should be fixed, game is over 20y old and could use those quality of life upgrades, which one of them they finally did- enlarge stash space and make shared stash tabs, they actually learned something from Path of exile. Then one thing is pain in the ass is getting items you need, if you play with no trade with other players, you can be stuck with same weak weapon like from normal difficulty to nightmare, and upgrades are so hard to find, you got 1 chance to turn 1 base item (and thats if you find one) to Charsi to Imbue it into rare, and its all into luck. Then runes and socket numbers are is pain for itself. You can't remove runes from sockets, and to find a good base with exact number of sockets, well goodluck with that, its completely random and you cant modify number of sockets to add or remove in any way, game is too much restricted, wish they took that change from Poe too. Another thing i would want to change is to make mercenary AI smarter, he is often sluggish and gets stuck often in certain areas which makes him useless.

Yeah, as much as I do love the game, it probably could've used a couple more layers of polish. On the one hand, trying to apply modern sensibilities onto a game that was originally two decades old pre-remaster would probably have some unforeseen concequences (Quake 2 RTX, anyone?). On the other hand, some of those sensibilities exist for a good reason.

First person I've heard complain about hud space over not having loot filters. Loot filter is the primary issue with this game and I played the original along with the remaster.

I thought the primary issue was either Hell (And the fact they didn't really change anything about it, even with 2 decades of hindsight) or the companion AI's pathing (Or lack thereof). Loot filter was never much of an issue for me personally.

Not really. I've always been one more for the gameplay itself than anything else, though I'll grant it can be an issue at times, just not for me personally.

Yes, its so annyoing to need press alt when items drop, instead of that they are always shown, or that you can toggle between hidden or shown items on ground all time

I'd say yes: The campaigns for both games are generally secondary to the gameplay, and - While D2 could definitely use some quality of life features - I just enjoy it more. Though, again, I'm 100% biased.

Diablo 2 resurrected is superb. I can’t believe I can play D2 on ps4, laying in my bed ahaha. Do you remember the old ‘Battle Chest’ from way back ? (D2 bundled with LOD)

Growing up we had both the original D2 battle chest (Which even came with the first Diablo, but I dont remember us having the disc - But that might just be my preference for D2 speaking) and StarCraft's. Spent alot of time flipping through the SC manuals. Never got better at the game though.

IIRC, the Prime Evil collection comes with Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo 3, its DLC, and some goodies for Diablo 3. I say go for it, personally, but D2R and D3 are different in terms of presentation and some aspects of gameplay, so you should keep that in mond.
