The older i get the less i play new games. At first i thought it was because i was "an adult" but the more i realise its mostly because new games are garbage and have garbage monetization schemes and DLCs. Games arent "works of art" anymore but 100% money driven slot-machines. This makes me sad. I recon there will come a point when the market collapse when people dont want it anymore and it will swing back to the olden ways of making games.

The problem with justifying the cosmetics AND battlepass is that most of the "continuous development" as Asmon calls it will go into expansions which they will ALSO sell for box price. Look at the "continuous development" that D3 received. I'm with Force on this one, I can't see enough continous development for an ARPG to justify all these routes to monetization.

I for one do not mind cosmetic monetization... but When are we going to stop kidding ourselves with this "certain level of acceptable monetization" BS? Once upon a time a game company could support itself MASSIVELY WELL with just a box price or subscription while still remaining top 5 game companies in the world.. ALL WHILE having Manufacturing costs, storage costs, logistic fee's, publishing fee's on GLOBAL scale.. A digital copy game has NONE OF THIS. They are making MORE THAN ENOUGH. Anything else is just greed. Start holding their feet to the fire. Speak up. Don't censor. This ISN'T and SHOULD NEVER have been acceptable practice. Most importantly, SUPPORT LEGISLATION for this BS........
@chezeus1672

to be fair, some of the "continuous development" really improved the game by a lot. particularly, removing the BS P2W RMAH was a huge step in the right direction. most other patches were questionable at best and usually lazy AF. an extra flag on every item that made them 50% stronger, and later another flag on every item that made them 50% stronger again. i'm sure that development was very expensive.

I always find the 'games haven't increased in price' argument strange. We only really have these conversations regarding AAA games, the games that make the most money, the games that not only recoup their dev costs, but also accrue enough dollars to pay publisher CEOs hundreds of millions of dollars. For most workers producing products for profit based companies, as long as the company can pay the wages of the workers 'while' they're making it, plus provide some profit for the higher ups to buy a yacht, all is good and the product and company are seen as viable. Over time, that company would try to balance maintaining quality with the rise of inflation and wages by expanding their customer base - something price reductions were very good at doing. The same quality - for less - over time. Ignoring all the late-stage-capitalism arguments for now, none of this seems to apply to games for some reason. Is it the 'Art' aspect of gaming? Why does anyone look at the companies that make games, see them making absolutely ridiculous amounts of money, and still think the price of games should have gone up? Is it because of the quality of the product rising? Many people would argue the quality of these games has actually decreased on release. I don't see why any product, gaming included, taking the above considerations into account, has to increase the cost of said product over time. Bringing back in those late-stage-capitalism arguments: If productions costs are met, salaries are met in line with inflation, fat cat wages increase, and the customer base expands exponentially, why, as a consumer, should you believe that product should cost more than it used to? That attitude is WHY inflation is increasing so rapidly. These companies can never just have 'enough', and they seem to have convinced consumers that their need for more and more profit is not only reasonable, but necessary. The problem is publicly traded companies isn't it? Shareholders are never happy. Maybe we shouldn't try to mix 'Art' with rampant greed?
@Abydos01

16:40 you forgot that in 2005 most if not all games were sold on a hard copy. Hard copy has manufacturing cost, storage and logistic fee, the publisher had to publish it sometimes on a world wide scale. A digital game has non of this.

"If it's cosmetics it's okay" No. We need to stop with that stupid line of thinking. The reason microtransactions in gaming are at the point they are now is because we keep being weak sniveling morons when it comes to this. No microtransactions are good. Right down the line. Gamers need to start being a bit intelligent and stop supporting awful practices like cosmetic microtransactions. Cosmetics bad, battle passes bad. Devs need to stop this "games as a service" concept. They should just, you know, release games and let them be. "Continuous development" is fucking stupid. Diablo 1 was released and remained as-is (with Hellfire being seen by the fanbase as largely unofficial since it wasn't made by the original devs). Diablo 1 is still amazing regardless of that, Hellfire or not. Same with Diablo 2, that got the expansion, and that's it. No microtransactions, no "cosmetics", just one of the best games ever, still to this day, and that's all it had to be. Why shouldn't Diablo 4 just come out and largely remain as-is forever? What changed about gaming that games being good isn't the desirable outcome, but instead they need to be shit but get new shitty content all the time?

Disagreed, games that remain as-is will eventually become boring. Like in your example diablo 1 is fucking amazing but you cant just keep running the same shit again and again, how do you expect a company to have a consistent and growing fanbase in the specific game if nothing changes but the base game for decades comes out. Now, if you were a gaming company in this day and age would you choose not to implement stuff like battle passes for more active players and more money? I dont think so, even if you were to be some sort of "hero" to create a game without predatory practices, yes you could get some praise (not guaranteed), but theres no revenue for future development and it might not even make the money earned worth the time, imagine creating a game and watching it slowly die when theres technology to keep it alive.

Not the programmers who worked on the game, not the employees, not even the company. Activision Blizzard cement it to me, from the employees being so underpaid that they can't afford to buy lunch from the studio's cafeteria to Bobby being I think the second most overpaid CEO in the USA. If it was the cost of making games that mattered most, they would look for ways to cut corners and cheaper alternatives first. It was never about the cost of making games that microtansactions were made, but how to exploit the consumers.

The survey at the start is conjoint analysis. They randomize the traits of the "editions" of the game, and make the survey respondent choose from a bunch of sets of random options. This is used to see relative values of different features, so they know what people are most likely to pay for. So, it's unlikely those exactly will be the options. But something like that is definitely coming.

I remember enjoying diablo 2 immensely in my teens and twenties. The more I hear about monetization in these games the more I realize that I'm not interested in them anymore. Seasons, special packs, a market, bought gear or item chances, a secondary bought currency that injects your character with power or cosmetic items while undermining the actual in game universe. All of these things take away from immersion, make the game feel like a financial burden, and creates incentives for the developer to take things out of the game to sell them piecemeal to buyers of the game as "microtransactions". Imagine a subset of players going after the cosmetic items the same way stone of jordans were in diablo 2. It could be quite fun to go for these cosmetic items in the game, if they were in the game.

The take that games haven’t increased in price because people aren’t willing to pay it is incredibly disingenuous. As someone who works in game development, even in the last 5 years, the cost to produce a game has drastically decreased, especially with the massive decrease in physical copies needed to be produced, and shipped. New game engines require a lot more work than before so games need to earn way more to become profitable. Back in time when they were creating diablo 1 blizzard team was purely made of game creator freaks who were spending often 18 hours a day in their little residential rooms designing the game. When it comes to diablo 1 this was a fcking Game back then. The best game ever created back then, I remember everybody wanted to play diablo 1, the musical stuff they brought to the gaming industry with diablo 1 is legendary to this day. Truth is: it's "just" entertainment. If you really have to count your few pennies that badly, then you perhaps shouldn't be playing such games in the first place but worry about not starving or freezing to death instead. Not saying that a lot of funds especially in AAA gaming are used wisely. But you don't have some kind of "right" to gaming. That's some of the pretentious, elitistic, self-loving and weird logic that people who strongly advocate for "piracy is always good" are using to excuse their criminal behaviour. Gaming is a luxury hobby. If you can't afford it: well, bad luck. Get another hobby or find a better job. Sorry guys, but that's about all there is to it, that's the blunt reality. I'm not suddenly going around stealing Lamborghinis either just because I have fun racing or collecting those but lack the money to afford it. And even if you should disagree with that you can still easily buy one of those countless relatively dirt cheap yet still good enough or even better indie games. I'm not sure when I last spend 40-50 bucks on a game, let alone 60-70. Just stop playing overhyped AAA trash, really. I've seen people say that the shit Asmon plays is all there is left in gaming. That's just wrong. Just step outside of that echo chamber for a moment and try other stuff and you'll see that you can still play good games that don't cost you a fortune in the long run. Again: there is a whole world of quality indie gaming. Reward those indie people and companies with what little entertainment money you have and not these overly greedy big players.

Yeah go fucking figure RPGs feel lame as fuck when that cool looking sword comes from a $30 credit card swipe and not, you know, actually earning it. It ruins the character fantasy and the world. There's a certain level of expectation I have when paying an upfront cost, and being able to build my character and earn shit in that paid for setting is one of them. I'd rather these live service f2p games start monetizing the transmog system some way, and still require you to earn the actual item itself in-game. Like maybe putting together a mog and then having to pay a REASONABLE price to add it to an outfit collection of some type that you have forever, like a skin. But, if I am paying for an xpac, in my eyes, I've paid for those armor pieces already. This shit is trash, and honestly Asmon is sucking big Blizz cock here.

7 day head start is insane. Games cost the same because the technology made to produce it got cheaper. When CD-RW first came out they were expensive as hell and then years later on black friday you could get 50-100 for a dollar. Also they sell digital copies for the same price and save A LOT of the cost of a physical copy, another reason why games are the same cost. Hopefully its just cosmetics rewards for battlepass but not holding my breath
@raknor971

No, 7 days head start is shit. It's an arpg first, not mmo. Check out arpgs : d3, poe, wolcen, etc etc etc. Season economy is usually separated from normal economy, the real game & content will be in-season. This a MAJOR difference with regular mmo-like games like Lost Ark, Wow, etc ..., and even in those really, 7 days headstart on launch (not on a "new raid" or end content release) is "meh".

@@raknor971 it all depends on how much itemization exists in the game, when ladder seasons with start, how dependent chars are on gear, etc. 7 days in D2R was massive because on day 1-2 people were out farming bases, keys, torches and are selling them at 2x-5x the value they get at the 14 day mark.

@@raknor971 I agree that the 7 day "head start" is not a big deal in the life of the whole game if its structured like D3:RoS and not POE and you aren't reliant on a player economy, from the perspective of a D3 player that plays every season. What would it even mean to be "behind" in D4 at launch, they would have to immediately start seasonal play on day 1 because everyone loses to bots that can farm 24hrs a day. That would be bullshit, obviously. My actual gripe is not that people are ahead but rather that by the time I can touch it the game is optimized/solved, a billion guides everywhere, everyone online is talking about it and it becomes hard to avoid. A whole week is a lot of time for people to optimize the fun out of the game. The new player "discovery" launch experience is an experience that continues to be taken away from players and monetized and I've hated it ever since the industry figured out they could sell it. If they do the PR "beta" gameplay and people can livestream the game before launch, it ruins it even more because we all know that the "beta" (whether its closed or open) without an NDA is the real launch of the game because they aren't going to actually make any changes and its all marketing. I have never been excited or tried any of these dumpster fire MMO launches that everyone else jumps on because of this exact reason.

All cool and so, but there's one question. You spend so much time talking about blizzard games having terrible microtransactions and so on, but you still talk about these games. You're the one of many that makes them popular. Why are you against their practices if you're the one sticking to them? And there's GW2. A great game, fair pvp system, gems can be bought by gold, great solution to power creep, etc. It's not the best, but it's definitely not bad. And there's nothing about that game in the RU-vid/Twitch. Almost no one is making content for this game, no one is watching. It's mostly the game "how you want games to be" and you ignore it. Instead of helping a good game (gw is just one example) to get more popularity you continue to advertise blitz games. I wonder why predatory monetization systems work. You want to accelerate this process? Well, guess what, content creators are the biggest reason this process takes so long. They create the hype even by saying that the game is bad. Because a random casual player will hear about DI not about any other game. And he may find some fun in it, because casual players and gamers value different things in games. And yet the playersbase of DI of all things is growing.

I am far from an expert but I believe development was harder in the past as less tools were widely available, everything had to fit onto a disc that would have to be distributed, AND gaming was a lot more niche a hobby in the past and more expensive relative to its time. They are absolutely profiting more now because there’s more players, less physical production thanks to digital downloads, broader avenues for advertisement, and the tools for making a *good* game are cheaper than they used to be. However it does occur I may be misunderstanding you, and you might just mean RECENT years. Which the stats would support for sure.

In the past like Forsaken it would have been a HUGE advantage as day 1 raids weren't under contest mode and the extra power drops they got would have put them at level for the activity while everybody else would be under-leveled. Even today they would have more time to get xp meaning the most powerful mods further into the artifact would be available to them and they'd also have time to unlock and farm more of the new expansion loot that could be more powerful than older stuff. So I can see how in a game with a market it would also provide a huge advantage.

Blizzard did a 100% bait and switch, and this is always a possibility. Blade and Soul, an older Korean MMO, didn't release their major pay to win systems until a few months after release, once players were invested in the game. WoW monetizes tokens, Hearthstone monetizes card packs, HoS monetizes heroes... don't fool yourselves. Dunkey actually had a pretty good/interesting Video that dives into the perceived increase in the cost of games/consoles over time (based on the sticker cost) Vs the actual constant decrease in what they cost when you factor in inflation and the value of today's dollar. Now, this doesn't take into account the the idea that real wages have stagnated the past 40-45 years, decreasing the buying power of the average consumer. Meaning that even though the cost relative to the value of a dollar has gone down, the cost relative to what people actually have available to spend (as a percentage of the disposable income they have left over after paying bills) hasn't gone down nearly as much, and in some cases has gone up. It also isnt really trying to include the examples of egregious monetization in live service games and the vast amounts people are encouraged to spend over time... But as far as sticker prices on buying a game "at face value" his points hold true. So all this is to say, there are a few reasons that video games FEEL more expensive to the average person than they were in prior decades, but in terms of sheer dollar value they are not more expensive, they are exponentially cheaper. An Atari was more expensive in 1980 than a PS5 was in 2020 🤯

One example i just look up because i saw the old disk in my shelf Fifa 2012 cost 40 Euro on PC on release. Today FIfa 2023 realeasing next month i think costs 69,99 Euro in the same time the inflation in my country in central Europe would put Fifa at 46,78 Euro now this of course doesn't include an increase in production cost. At the same time Fifa at this point is just filled with predatory microtransaction and little has changed in terms of gameplay is the 2022 game really worth almost double than the 2011 game i don't think so.

It's unfortunate where the social aspect of gaming has become who has the biggest paycheck, but it was just a matter of time, and blizzard is only doing what makes the most money at the end of the day.
