Regarding the price, you have to consider that it is made in Italy and the cost of labor is significantly higher than where most shoes are made. Their production is likely lower than most companies such as Hoka, who are able to keep the price down by cheaper labor and higher production, thus achieving economies of scale.

Diadora is a good company, in the 70's, 80's, and 90's they made a lot of shoes for track and field, especially field events. I believe that it's pronounced "De ah dora". Great review, love your tech specs review and honesty.

QD: The thing that worries me the most right now is the “Strava” effect. I’m in several running groups in my area and I’ve noticed that some people are sooo worried about their stats on the app that it takes away from their enjoyment of the sport. It can also lead to injury and higher stress, as people are self conscious about their daily runs and such. 🤷‍♂️ Just something I’ve noticed recently..
@Scotty.Lincoln
@Scotty.Lincoln 2 года назад
Nate this was one of my answers. And ill; be the first to admit it happened to me last year to the point i even stopped using strava for a alittle bit. I was seeing alot of peoples run times/distance and was constantly comparing myself to it. I took a break then when i decided to get back on because i actually enjoy it for the most part, i just said this is where im at and thats where they are at.
@NicolasVerschoren
@NicolasVerschoren 2 года назад
Nailed it! I'm guilty of this myself. I like the whole idea of strava, and love that it adds a bit of competitiveness, but I need to remind myself more of the reason why I run and avoid becoming sidetracked because of some stats and segments.

I was very curious of this shoe, being Diadora an amazing Italian brand famous for its football gear. The price point is the downside of producing in Italy where labour cost can't be compared with China or Cambodia, where most produce. I hope Diadora doesn't give up. Thanks for your honest review Seth.

ben detto.

It's true though that so many people complain about all the jobs and manufacturing being outsourced but few people are willing to put their money where their mouth is and pay a higher price for a product to ensure that a living wage is paid to the workers/artists and that the product has been produced ethically. Instead everyone has become used to getting everything for as cheap as possible despite it often being produced in third world countries where the workers are typically paid peanuts, working conditions are bad, or sweat shops/underage labor/bad for the environment methods are used (looking at you Nike, Addidas etc....). It's amazing the degree to which people will turn a blind eye to how a product is made so long as the price is right or they like the brand. So I applaud this company for actually making their products in their home country (so few products are now made in their country of origin), and paying their workers a decent wage even if it means they have to sell their shoes at higher....and thus a less competitive price....even though I'm sure it costs them sales.

Diadora and La Sportiva both translate to "size up, buddy" ;) But to be fair, if we were buying USA-made shoes, they would run 220-350 easily, if sourced and built here. So... yeah.

QOD: the reliance on gear, tech and just trying to be to critical over the micro details of one’s training and racing. Missing the days of training /racing where gear and tech took a back seat and the focus was just hard work and going by feel.

We actually sell this shoe at the running store I work at. I always hear that the heel is too soft from the people I pull this shoe for. The price point also sways them away. I really like this shoe. We also sell other Diadoras. This one is a little more true to size compared to the other shoes they make. The other ones are much more narrow in my opinion.

QD: Over-obsession with forefoot strike. The vast majority of runners at least first touch down laterally in front of, close to or on the heel (as evidenced in the most common outsole wear pattern) before the foot pronates naturally to full landing, which can be midfoot or rear foot. But there is no right or wrong footstrike and studies have proven that landing under one’s center of gravity is most important. Beyond that, optimizing an individual’s overall posture and running efficiency is the best approach, since everyone’s biomechanics are different. Even the pros land on their heels when they’re tired. If you artificially try to change your footstrike without attention to overall posture (especially at slower paces) it could be a recipe for shinsplints. The reason so many shoes have been designed with pronounced midsole rocker technology is because we naturally tend to have a back-to-front or mid-to-front dynamic one way or the other. In case you’re wondering I touch down briefly on the rear lateral area about an inch forward from the heel before landing full midfoot. FYI I got the above info from my coach’s wife who is a shoe expert who has consulted with several of the major running shoe brands. Martha
@Nonixification
@Nonixification 2 года назад
Absolutely agree. Ive seen a youtuber (dont want to name him) who is extreme forefoot striker, his heel is not even touching the ground, basically he is hopping every step. Painful to watch, its not going to end well. His Vaporfly`s falling apart after 150km as he is rubbing and sliding on the forefoot.

QD: The trend that concerns me the most is how every running shoe is going with higher stack heights. Seeing all the video’s from TRE and how it seems every running shoe is going maximalist bothers me. Even shoes from Adidas like the Takumi San and Boston have gone to the higher stack. It appears from leaked images that the Pegasus is going even taller on stack. Shoes that at one point were good for speed and distance training are now only good at distance training. I know that’s the way of the world, and most runners like the high stack, cushioned shoes, but there are less and less daily trainers that allow you to pick up the pace, like the Adidas SL20.1, or even the Nike Epic React Flyknit 2.
@johnmcguire8347

This is so interesting after the “Born to Run” inspired minimalist shoe movement not so long ago.
@RobertHarridge
@RobertHarridge 2 года назад
@@johnmcguire8347 I don’t mind high stack shoes. I enjoy most of them, but some shoes, like the Pegasus and Boston for example, were medium stacked shoes that were good at any pace. Now it seems like they have moved towards high to maximalist shoes that are only good at moderate to slower paces. I’m only one man with his own opinions, so others may not feel the same.

That price point is because you're paying professional Italian shoemakers to make it. It's not a shoe made in a sweatshop in China. Hope that clarifies it.

QD: Max cushion recovery shoes. Whenever I try "bottomless cushion" type trainers, they make my ankles and calves incredibly sore rather than refreshed. I think that the softness lengthens or dilates the impact force which makes the muscles and joints deal with it longer instead of getting a break. Maybe it's just me. I get more "recovery" from a few easy miles in a daily trainer, or just taking a day off, than a "recovery run" wearing the Infinity Run or the Triumph or something like that.
@dougmoore7424
@dougmoore7424 2 года назад
Strange. I may be noticing the same thing with certain max recovery shoes (currently dealing with this a bit in the Nike invincible’s).
@ethanshea6260
@ethanshea6260 2 года назад
QD: This trend has definitely calmed down a bit as maximalist running shoes become more popular, but there are still lots of people who jump into running in minimalist running shoes with little to no experience and end up injuring themselves. I can confirm this having worked in running shoe stores during the past couple years. There’s definitely something to be said about strengthening your feet with less cushioned shoes…but it’s a process that takes lots of time.

I absolutely love your reviews Seth but I think it's important for people to remember that fit is based on foot shape, midsole is really effected by your weight and different runners have different goals. It would be cool if you gave an interpretation of who a shoe is best for. That said its okay to say I'm not sure who this shoe would be for, like this shoe at this price.

I still think that certain things must be re-established concerning Diadora. The brand has been famous since the 1970s in tennis, soccer and running but had a slump during the late 90s and 2000s. Today the brand produces very nice sneakers made in italy or in portugal whose quality is comparable to the new balance made in us and uk. Regarding the running shoes, the diadora were great for me when I got back to running and I weighed over 95kg, some models were really suitable for a heavy weight. I still use a pair of diadora for the recovery days today with my saucony rotation. I have not tested the Atomo so I would not comment on them but the same shoes made in usa would probably cost $ 230 and even more in Europe.
@paul1458
@paul1458 2 года назад
Perhaps Diadora is charging a premium price since the shoe is constructed in Italy where I would expect manufacturing costs would be higher. New Balance still makes some of their models in USA and they tend to cost more because of this reason

The trend to produce higher stack height running shoes. Some of the best running shoes by Adidas were the Adios Adizero 2, 3, and my favorite the 4. They’ve been replaced by the HEAVY BEEFY ADIOS ADIZERO 6, the ridiculous experiment (50 mm heel) stack the Prime X, and the heavy clunky Frankenstein shoe the Boston 10’s. Some have been improvements eg, Adios Pro 2, probably Takumi 8. But for the most part there should be the option for some runners to purchase the former lower to the ground light HIGH SPEED CRUISERS like the Boston 7, 8, 9’s and the Adios Adizeros mentioned above.

QOD: The tread that bothers me is it seems Running Shoe Companies are focused ONLY on Marathon racing shoes (and perhaps racing spikes). I don't see any focused on 5k or 10k. Yes you showed us a new Adidas Takumi Sen 8 but It seems bulky and with a high stack height for a 5k. it is also 6.8 oz, still heavy for a 5k, the Saucony Fastwitch is 6.2 with the Saucony Type A9 at 5.9, but both of them have been around for years

QD: We runners are already an obsessive lot, and I think the trend of MAXIMAL DATA doesn't really help us enjoy running, and probably doesn't really help us run better on balance. I'm a Timex watch and google spreadsheet guy, no biometric wearables, and no Strava, and that's because I think more data input would only tap into my obsessive inclinations and make me less mindful, joyful, and flexible as a runner (and a dad, husband, etc...).

QD: Tech, the never ending pursuit of more data. There's watches and pods and chest straps and step counters all throwing data at you. Don't get me wrong I like to know how far I've run, how long it took and my pace but the metrics available, that we're all paying for, is just insane. If your elite maybe you want to know how long your foot was off the ground or your pace if there wasn't any elevation gain on your run. Then striving for perceived good "numbers" so you can post them, this is causing injuries and people running in ways that doesn't necessarily advance their training or fitness. I personally am not on Strava, don't post my runs and have a simple spreadsheet that records and tracks my training. I'm not against posting your runs if it motivates someone else to start running or helps others or people are interested but it just seems relentless. How Seth does it, is in my opinion, he way to do it. Its planned, instructional, motivating, inclusive and Seth even says sometimes "don't try this at home, I've been running for over 20 years, it takes years and years to get to this point"

Diadora made high top basketball sneakers back in the 70's that you could say were predecessors to the Jordan 1 but with better materials for the same price range in today's dollars. They also have some cool retro running sneakers reminiscent of the Gel-Lyte series from Asics. I'm really curious to see how these running shoes perform as they look eerily similar to the Clifton but with a fresh new look of an upper on top of a chunk of EVA. It's pronounced dee-uh-dora.

QD: The uncontrollable increment in the price of running shoes is a concern. The running shoes companies started by charging astronomical prices for their racers and then 'close the gap' by rapidly increasing the price of their trainers too. To be fair, the running shoes technology is getting better but is it proportional to the price increment the last 2-3 years? I cannot answer that but I am pivoting towards out-of-season running shoes and also shoe models from China to cushion the impact the price increment, especially when the latter are also making better shoes and they can be almost half the price of popular models.

Your price scoring makes no sense. When something is made in Italy instead of moving jobs over to some third world country, you obviously pay extra for the higher expenses involved. In fact, shoes that are made in third world countries that sell for say $65 may be considered relatively pricey, whereas Italian made shoes that sell for say $200 may be considered relatively affordable.
