Diagnose No Headlight,No Dashboard Lights And No Stop Lights 

Jim, I always stop & watch your videos. There are a lot of half assed mechanics on the internet, some of whom I expect that couldn't diagnose an open fuse ! I am 84 & still get called to fix electrical & electronic faults, mostly on agricultural equipment. I am not a mechanic, but I have always fixed my own vehicles, but at 84 there are some jobs that I just physically can't do, or simply don't want to do. I was & still am a communications radio & radar tech, & fault finding electrics is all the same. You are a great fault finder because you understand how the electrics work. If you don't know how it works, it is only by luck that you will fix it. Thanks for helping out your followers with your descriptions videos. Cheers! from Alberta Canada.

Thanks Jim for being very thorough, I had almost the identical problem except I had brake lights and no rear tail lights. I had front parking lights. What caused my problem is that I had no interior lights to start and I pushed the round button in to turn them on and the button went in further than usual and stayed in. I now understand that this caused the back to separate because the plastic catches were brittle (2007 11 years old) The back separated, and disconnected the electrical connection for the low beams, dash lights and rear tail lights. I took things apart like you said and reconnected the back to the front and things worked again just as you did in the video except my round switch was still in tact. I taped up the box because the plastic tabs were not holding it together properly. My 2007 Chev Express 2500 is not a 3500 like in the video. I suspect that the brake lights worked on the 3500 in the video also but not the tail lights like mine. Thank you very much for the help, this was an extremely good video for me.

Jerry, I watched one of your videos to change a water pump. Helped a lot. I have a 2004 Cadillac Deville. Some of the dash lights went out and come back on . Now when I turn the headlights on the dash lights dim. Have any suggestions? Thank you,Roger

Sir: On 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood brougham, the dashboard lights not coming on at all, while headlights are just fine. Would replacing the main headlights twilight dimmer switch restore the dashboard lights. Thank you Sam

Hi Jim, Repairing a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer (rear wiper not functioning) Replaced the motor and still nothing. All fuses are good so I moved on to the rear wiper switch. While checking the switch I sparked a small wire and lost the dash lights , So now not only is the rear wiper not working, I have no dash lights as well. All fuses look good Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Jim great video. I have a question I hope u can help me out with. I've been to 3 mechanics and none have fixed not do I know if the even attempted but I did get charged and still not working. Both fuse boxes under hood and underwear if 2007 Chevy express g3500 incomplete cutaway ( passenger bus) has only half power going to it. I have no lowbeams @ all. I've changed the multifunction switch out all new fuses and relays and what ever these so called mechanics have done which as far as I'm concerned nothing. AC compressor no longer works, right brakes and right taillight don't work either. Could u possibly tell me what would be the thing I want to do to get power back in both my fuseboxes? I'm thinking if I can get that working I may get some lights working again thank u

I wonder if you could help us from a distance. I have 1994 Cadillac Fleetwood. One day the dashboard cluster of lights died completely. All other lights in and out of the car worked normal. If I would slam top of dash the cluster comes on for a while. But lately that hasn't worked either. We checked the ground behind the dash, bolt going into engine compartment, ground was good. Also, when the emergency flasher is engaged the left and right signals work, can hear them inside the car but can't see them. Also the signals worked outside the car only when the emergency flasher is turned on, but not if flasher is not engaged. We are at the end of out wits, and many mechanics tried to fix it. The car runs great except for the dash lights. Where do we go from here. Thank you so much for your help. Sam

I got a 94 K5 blazer that the gauges went all wacky and died while it was running, now I got no power to the key at all, but the light bar still works and the battery is fully charged. Any ideas?

Im curious. I installed a new TIPM for a 2006 PT Cruiser since the OEMs had flaws. Now the car rings as if the headlights are left on when you open the door (but its not), the radio turns off and on alot by itself and even the engine doesnt shut off right away when turning the key off.....what else could it be if the TIPM was replaced with a high quality one? Am i missing another component to look at?

2010 f150 no rear lights, running, reverse at all, blinker was flashing fast so thought bulb, at auto zone they guy says press your brake and thats when he said you dont have any lights at all. came home checked fuses under hood, found most top half come on with test tester and bottom right do no light up ??? so small box at passger feet all left side light up but bottom row and 3 on the right do not light up ???

Good day Jim I trust you are doing well. The Video is very educational as my car has a similar problem. I have a Saab ( Sweden Cars ) 93 2002 turbo. Now my problem is my Head lights with my dash lights and my tail lights not working when I switch on the control to the on position for head lights tail lights and dash lights. The car as funny as it sounds has a will of its own to switch on these lights by itself. I did some research as to what the problem actually might be and came to conclusion that it might be the Orange Relay ( Ordered the Part ) and also with the Switches they are different from one another so I also ordered that part. I checked fuses. Which seems to be fine to me ( not broken ). It sounds like a relay problem and someone advised me to replace all the relays concerning the lights that might solve it.

I have an 03 ram 2500 with a boss plow and after i disconnected the plow the blinkers and brake lights are intermittent. I checked all of the relays and tries swapping all of them and that did not change anything. The only light that works all of the time is the right rear. I do not see any wire problems when i trace the wires to the back. When i turn the lights on some times the brake lights and blinkers will work. Any idea what could be causing this?

Hello Jim, Nice video. I have a 2003 Mercury Sable with auto dimming rear view mirror which nowadays with all the high intensity lights, just doesn't dim enough. Is there anything I can do or add/replace that will let me not be blinded?

It was the turn signal/ headlight switch on my 95 nissan truck. Sometimes they would work and sometimes not, it also affected my rear brake marker lights (parking lights) when the dash lights weren't working.

How much was the part?

2001 buick regal no dash lights and no tail lights. No mechanics can fix it. Thus far. Referred to specialists for elctrical problems as replacing the fuse did not work. But due to the expense and hours of suggested diagnostics the car is staying parked. Previous work. Coil replaced and thermastat replaced. Would that affect anything? Please help!! Atlanta Ga.

97 Lexus LS 400 dashboard went out, a/c , radio, windows won’t roll up, shifter doesn’t shift unless you hit button beside it trunk or gas cap opens but changed all fuse that showed no good but was got any advice

For a customer I would also have put in a new switch. If it was my own van I would have tried to repair it. Was there a relay controlling the lights? Good video.

Jim I'm a little curious. Probably someone who drove the vehicle pressed in to hard on the switch and popped it apart as you've mentioned. What's curious is the people that followed to work on it. I have a 1988 chevy pickup with issues pertaining to the headlights, dome light, and radio. They were working fine as of last week. I have looked through my wiring schematic and believe that I have traced all that I can trace. I started at the firewall dealing with the fusible links. I have power in front of and behind them . I started to remove the factory electrical tape and loom kit to expose more wiring. I have pin pointed the area that is bad in the fuse panel under the steering column. I have no power in the radio fuse slot, the dimmer slot and also the headlight slot. what would be my next move besides taking it in and have someone use the specialized short circuit finder?????

Nice video. I have the same van 2001 model though. My issue is i change the bulbs for my brake light and my reverse lights several times. However, only one brake light works and on the opposite side only one reverse light works. Any clues? Thank you in advance for any suggestion you might have.

Have a 92 s10 brake lights work head lights work but dash lights and tail lights and front marker lights dont. Changed bulbs on tail lights and checked fuses any ideas would be greatly appreciate thank you. Love watching the videos thank you.

My friend took it for me to get a smog, when it came back, the dashboard lights and the tail lights did not work. Everytime we put fuse in they blow. My air conditioner quit blowing cool air the same time as well.. coincidence, I don't know. I just know it all came back from the smog shop that day, this way. 😕 Please Jim, can you help? I really don't have the money for a shop. This car has actually been in the shop just about every year, and I should sell her.. LOL 😄 But. . Now.. I'm not understanding why there wasn't power at the fuse, shouldn't there be power regardless if the switch was there or not? Doesn't Power go from battery to fuse, through switch to relay then finally to the lights?

Hello MR.Jim I recently bought a 1980 C-3 corvette, wait til you hear this one,,lol, it has me scratching my head to this moment,i went out and bought a Haynes book to try and get a better idea as to what exactly is going on, now on to the problem, you may want to buckle in jim , lol, as me and the old owner were going through the cars features this an that,etc, you get the picture, anyhow, he tells me he installed a red strip of L.E.D. lights just underneath the dash panel so when the lights came on it made the area of where your feet are a cool looking red glow down there which at the time seemed kinda cool to me, so no big deal, on to the next, so one night I go out and pull out my head light switch only to see no RED L.E.D. LIGHTS ?? the L.E.D. LIGHTS came on same as pulling the master headlight switch, they both work together pull headlight switch, you also got your red lights underneath, so once the red lights stopped working I tried checking all the fuses except the ones I couldn't reach,or were just too big for my testor, I did find one bad fuse a 10 amp,I replaced it, tried pulling my headlights on again, and nothing, no red lights , then I noticed that the steel rod that is my headlight pulling rod became extremely hot, burning hot, to the point I could hardly touch it, next thing I realize when I turned the car off, my tail lights would stay on, all my interior lights stayed on, I got out of the car and see that the head lights are no longer coming on, everytime I want to drive ,I have to re-connect the hot side of the battery, and anytime I park I have to remove the cable back off the hot side , , so bottom line here if I want to go anywhere connect hot side to battery, all my lights come on,including tail lights,, if I pull on the burning headlight rod ,the headlights DO NOT come on, and shut down is ,come home park car, kill engine,hood light is on all interior lights on,tail lights on, oh and the dome light,lol, my childhood dream going straight to hell right before my eyes, ive spent every penny on this car thought I was getting a great deal on it, all my excitement about buying this car has disappeared, do you have any idea,s about what it could be or something I could do MR.Jim I would appreciate any help ,thank you for your time sir, and listening to my concerns, much appreciated MR.Jim have yourself a great day, Sincerely William

The e box is NOT supposed to locate in the awkward position where are good at collecting waste fluid and debris. While many car managed to put e box on top of engine bay, that truck designer could not find a place top engine bay???
