Diagnosing And Fault Finding A Dead Milwaukee Circular Saw / PCB Repair.

In this video we're having a look at a Milwaukee circular saw. The unit is dead apart from the LED that lights up when pressing the trigger. I disassemble the unit, diagnose faults on the PCB, and show how to re-assemble the unit.
The unit inside is very similar to the SDS drills I have repaired in another video, although the firmware would be different as the circular saw doesn't implement speed control.
Replacing the blown mosfets inside the device usually fixes them.... however not always it seems....and some parts aren't readily available :(
You can always buy the complete motor assembly from Milwaukee, but where's the fun in that!

Have just started my re-discovery of....... actually it might be possible to fix this (after being returned from Milwaukee Germany, deemed unfixable/ not worth it) & glad I stumbled across your channel. Thank you! Soldering iron I fixed thanks to another channel, batteries thanks to a Greek guy & guys channel, & now is time for the circular saw & rotary hammer drill thanks to you! That sounds a bummer. The problem was the other board on the one that I fixed. I think its like a brake from what I remember. I'm not sure if you have an oscilliscope? but there should be a square wave driving the mosfets on that board and it wont run without it. What was the original problem? Mosfets?
@MrTorch8

@@BuyitFixit it might have been the brake board to start with but I think I may have shorted something at 1 stage and I pretty confident I fried the driver. Bought 1 from ali express but that didn't fix it. No life at all now, so back of the cupboard for now.

I have been watching Dean Doherty repair a variety of cordless tools and Milwaukee comes in for a lot of criticism from him for not being worth repairing because of the lack of availability if individual spare parts. If any part of the motor/switch/controller assembly fails you have to replace the whole assembly.

I have had 2 failed Milwaukee 18v circular saws now, didn't register, so too expensive to fix. Now I bought the equivalent Makita and I am not held to one brand. The Makita is the superior saw, lighter and not so bulky . Always register, the production lines are so intensely managed that mistakes happen.

I finally fixed my Milwaukee CCS66 circular saw. I cannot believe what fixed it either, having stripped the saw down 3 times, & cleaned all the trigger connections inside checked & tested the wiring & mosfets etc & everything passing continuity tests with a multimeter, I did some more googling & people suggested cleaning the battery connectors fixed theirs. Well I wasn't at all convinced as my connectors looked immaculate with no gunk or residue but I gave them a drenching with WD40 Contact Cleaner & a good rub with a cotton bud which only showed an absolutely miniscule amount of dirt on it I then inserted a battery & F*CK a DUCK it fired right up 😮 I am flabbergasted, but hopefully it might help some others with these cursed Milwaukee Circular Saws having the LED light up when battery inserted but no life out of the saw at all, as this is such a simple fix that doesn't even require open the tool & will cost less than a £tenner for some decent contact cleaner.

I got exactly the same fault with my M18 CCS66 I thought it was a dodgy switch or connection as it would work fine for ages then stop but would work again with a bit of a clunk. I stripped it down at the weekend cleaned the contacts & put it back together & it worked. BUT put it back in the van the next day & dead again apart from the LED 😡🤬 Got to be honest I got a lot of Milwaukee cordless kit & it is NOT worth the price premium. I have M18 Miter Saw 10" that I tried to cut 10" treated wood but the blade got stuck. I foolishly continued to press the switch but it went dead. I read in a web that one person could remove dust or small particle and got it spin again. But when I contacted Milwaukee, they said once happened there is no fix except replacing the motor assembly. They did not say about trigger switch. Two lessons learned were; 1- this saw does not have "Overload Protection" and 2- Yes, Milwaukee will fix it after 5 years using Serial number. Unfortunately, my machine (2734-20) died after 5 years and few weeks. Could you please show how to open and/or fix the motor assembly for this model? Thanks a lot. @BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 3 месяца назад
Someone sent me the motor assembly out of one to have a look at, unfortunately what seems a common problem with these is the braking MOSFET fails and sends 18V into the microcontroller / motor driver chip and fries it. Unfortunately this isn't replaceable as it's a Texas Instruments part which they don't supply to the public, and it has firmware programmed into it that we don't have access to either.

Someone sent me the insides of one before to have a look at. The mosfet that controls the braking had shorted and fed power back into the main chip and fried it. I'm from Russia, I bought 2 tools m12 2553, this is an impact driver, I bought them already broken, I fixed the first one in 20 minutes, there was a drop of solder on the legs of the motor driver, the second one I try to revive sometimes by measuring everything I can measure on its board 😂 It is not possible to find a datasheet or any information on this drv. The only thing I could find was a guy from China who wrote that this is confidential information and he cannot share it because he signed an agreement. Theres a built in diode across. When mosfets blow they usually blow short. The meter was measuring the internal diode. You can also trigger the mosfet with a meter when testing it, and it will read short. They are a little awkward to test. Usually you get a short on the gate when they blow too...

Working on 1 that looks new & has power to the motor , led lights & that is all that happens. Trigger isn't the problem, when triggered, power sent to the motor , it was bought for diy & has only been used on 2 projects, & FAILED pisspoor Milwaukee

Yes the saws seem a bit problematic, I've seen a lot of failed ones on eBay. Possible some design issue and not the best product I think. Some of the other products like the angle grinders and impact drivers I've not had any issues with.

Agree. Too high a price for spare parts unless you can replace individual components.

They seem very fragile for such expensive tools.

Depends if the main controller is fried. If it's just the mosfets it's repairable. I did get a replacement control board from a viewer and used the motor board I repaired and fixed it in a later video.

Some stuff isn't great I must admit. The grinders and impact drivers I've not had a problem with.
