Diagnosing Severe Damage - When is iPhone Data Recovery Unsuccessful?

In this video I am working on an iPhone 12 Pro Max for data recovery that has already had a microsoldering attempt on it. There was a section on the motherboard that had many components out of place and were shorting different lines together. Unfortunately whoever worked on this before me still needs a lot of practice.
Once this area was cleaned up, I noticed the board was still not giving any signs of life. I noticed the exact opposide side was the power management ic and started measuring power rails there. I quickly found a shorted line.
After using both freeze spray and thermal cam, I was unable to determine the cause of the short. I removed the pmic next, but the short remained.
I removed the CPU as a last ditch effort, hoping for possible damage from being overheated. However, when I measured the CPU itself I found that the line (PP_SOC_S1) was internally fully short, making data recovery impossible.
By knowing which line was bad before removing the CPU, I was able to save myself the trouble of having to do the full swap. If this line is short, there is no point in doing the swap because it will not work.
Most jobs that come to me are successful, but there are some jobs that are simply not recoverable because there is nothing that can be done about the problem. I could not fully determine if this was the original issue or if this was caused by the previous technician, but it is still important to take data recovery cases as seriously as possible and to fully measure everything possible. If I cannot solve the problem, I can at least tell you why with 100% accuracy.
I'm not a big fan of when techs say "the cpu is broken" without any evidence. Most are just guessing but aren't sure where the problem actually lies. In this case however, the cpu really was internally fully shorted.

Where you changed the first chip it was 2 capacitor that was connected together and shorted i think that was the problem you can check your video

With that quality of work, I bet they probably had a “short killer” and started injecting…. Poor CPU :(
@iBoardRepair
@iBoardRepair Год назад
That is a good point, who knows!
@vincen.3590
@vincen.3590 Год назад
Short killer is for VDD MAIN. It wouldn't affect the CPU. Also, the voltage is low with high amp on the short killer. It is likely the CPU was damaged and caused cross circuits. It happened often.
@joesipaq
@joesipaq Год назад
@@vincen.3590 99% of people who own a short killer inject voltage on any line that is shorted to try and burn out the short hence the name "short KILLER"... using a normal DCPS you can inject enough amperage with the correct voltage into almost any circuit to see where the failure is. Especially if it is a line like VDD_main. Short killers are one of the worst gimiks in the market for inexperienced techs. Can you image putting 10 amps through a via in the middle of the board that is 1/4 the thickness of human hair? The damage you are causing with that "tool" is just a ticking time bomb if you actually find a shorted component with it. I have seen some dumb famous youtuber inject 3V into a CPU line on some random computer and 100% the CPU was dead after that. 1.8v or 0.8v lines don't like 3v. Its funny, because on his video you can also see what looks like support components heating up in his thermal camera. CPU was probably fine, but not after he touched it with a short killer.

hi sr, try to remove the dtc capacitor on cpu( use a pen grinder), maybe dtc capacitor are shorted
@iBoardRepair
@iBoardRepair Год назад
Hm that is something I have never really considered. In fact, I think I may go ahead and break some on a known good cpu and see what lines become short. Good idea.

@@iBoardRepair yeah some tech thing that crystal are ic but not, they are DTC capacitor, when you use the pen grinder you dont have to put the cpu flat , just remove it, put some tape around and take your time to remove it.
