Bonjour Bonjour , in this vidéo Gregory and Suzanna from Maisons Gheerbrant are laying laminate flooring in diagonal.
The room is 4 meters wide by 8 meters long , and so by laying the floor in diagonal , we trick the mind of the visitor.
Indeed , a more traditional design of laying in the length or the width of the room , would have accentuated a corridor effect.
By laying the flooring in diagonal the room appears wider than it really is and not as long as it really is :)
The room does have a few challenges to overcome , but nothing really out of the ordinary :
- A visit or access hatch at the entrance door for the main water and gas pipes,
- The staircase in the middle of the room leading to the upper floors bedrooms,
- And the need to have the flooring reach the level of the kitchen floor for a smooth transition from the living room to the kitchen.
Other infos and details :
+ Before laying the laminate , we have put a layer of under flooring, that’s why we start on a green surface. The under floor helps with capturing moist and does act as sound proofing. It was also the best way of reaching the kitchen floor level efficiently and cost effectively;)
+ We did split the tasks between the two of us , Gregory was measuring and laying , Suzanna was cutting with Ryobi jigsaw.
+ Gregory started with the most tedious and difficult task with the entrance corner and creating the visit hatch , once that done everything went well and swiftly.
+ The laminate flooring with a dark old wood decorative layer was chosen to contrast with the white walls while bringing warmth to the room.
Among the dark wood colored floor on offer , we chose the one that complimented best the bare brick wall (feature wall of that room) !
+ For this project (as for all the others) we used Ryobi One+ tools WITHOUT sponsoring!!

That’s a lot better than straight install. Probably more difficult though.

Yes to both !! :)) it is a bit more complex to cut and lay , especially if you have (like us) a visit trap to the under floor and a floating staircase :)) Also do buy a bit more flooring than if you had to lay straight ! The big advantage to laying diagonal is that you change the perspective of the room and you do make it look wider and less long than it really is ! It’s all a trick of the mind :))

I want to install on the diagonal but others are saying there is more waste and to start in the middle of the room. I'm so glad you showed how to start in the corner.. because you show this in fast time, it is hard to see if there were any issues. Can you share some tips of what to look out for? Do you think there is more waste then a straight instal? thank you

Hi Judi , happy if the video can help you , even if just a little :) Diagonal is great to maximize a room size effect or make a room feel less rectangular than it is ! As for The question of waste .. it depends on : the angle or diagonal you choose compared to your room and your ability to cut (and re-cut). As for your starting point .. the center of the room is the best way to ensure you have the diagonal you want ;) As for me I started by the corner and the underfloor visiting trap because it was the most complicated to achieve in that room and I wanted to tackle it first rather than last :))

Hi,if the end joints of the planks are to be tapped together how is it done as the cuts are diagonal and the tapping bar is square

Hi Liam Joy , sorry for taking so long to get back to you 😅 So for the planks that you do cut once reaching the wall (cut the end or tip of the plank parallel to the wall) ... those plank you can use to start your next row (you might have to re-cut it to match the angle of the plank and the wall) 👍🏼 You actually have the same cut and same situation if laying the planks square to your wall ... Square or in angle , still a cut , still a plank you can use to start a new row 👍🏼👍🏼😉

@@maisonsgheerbrant2094 hi maisons gheerbrant.cutting the planks is not the problem i have to tap the boards in a linear direction to close the end to end joints as it is not a drop and lock system .i can't use a suction cup as the boards are not smooth. I must try 2 sided tape and a block.

@@dannybreidenbach6385 hi Danny i ended up shaving the tongue of the last board on the end of each row and glued it in .i alternated the glued end boards left and right of the room ,i hope this makes sense

Wait did you just cover up that trap thinking laminate is sturdy enough?

Hi 👋🏼 Rest assured , there is no big hole ! It’s a visit hatch to the underfloor and water meter ! The hatch itself is made of a metal frame and high density wood , which I then covered with the laminate 😉 All good 👍🏼
