I've said this before on your videos, but you are by FAR the best construction guy on RU-vid. Clearly you have decades of actual experience and you do a great job explaining all the little issues that always come up. Thanks!

Thank you so very much! I am doing my very first laminate floor installation in a small bathroom. I have the water proof flooring and all my supplies. I did however forget the transition strip. I will be ordering it from my "Big Box" supplier. I will be laying about 28 sq. feet on flooring. Along with this renovation I am having a new shower pan & surround installed. I am installing a new pedestal sink, glass panel entry door, and new baseboards & mouldings around the window and door. I am excited about this project and I will return to these videos for help and guidance along my way in this adventure!

My issue too for transition from tile to laminate. And the tile guy did exactly what you said, they finished off the tile too soon (who knew??). My daughter and I installed a floating laminate floor and the tile is higher and I can’t do just the T transition. More like the concrete to laminate only in reverse heights. Using the 4 in 1 transition set from Pergo. Had to special order, but worth it for the color match and options at hand for all the door ways. The nice part is they gave us an extra rubber piece to make it all match for the extra height for the underpayment. Sweet! One door is tIle to laminate and the other door is laminate to carpet. I love your videos. You should see this floor. Looks great and I am proud to say that I am a weekend warrior!

I'm currently in the middle of a transition like this with my bathroom. I like the look of the T molding there instead of trying to get the planks all oriented the same direction throughout the whole installation making it flush. Much easier and looks good. Thanks!

Jeff, absolutely fantastic video bud!!! I just learned more in the past 16 mins. then I have in 20 years of watching (DIY TV)… They actually do not teach you anything, and ppl. actually think they can accomplish complete room makeovers in a WEEKEND!!! You break it down step by step, and instruct ppl. on the realities they will face!!! Until the next one, God bless and Dirty Jersey out!!!!Oh, P.S., can't wait to see the Greek Revival trim videos coming up... Ha ha ha just joking bud, anxiously awaiting all or any trim videos!!!!

Jeff, For me, the fact that you do not edit / cut your videos when you encounter a problem ( like with the height of the transition strip) gives a lot of credibility to what you do. In reality, things are not always perfect the first time. Thanks & have a great weekend 👍

Jeff, awesome video. I've watched dozens of videos to help with laying some vinyl flooring in my basement, this is the first time someone has clearly explained transitions. Wish I'd seen this BEFORE I laid my vinyl, as now I'll have to run the oscillating tool along the door since I came too close. But at least I know how to do it!

I just had 1100 and some odd sq ft of 'luxury vinyl plank' and they used transitions going into each room, even if it was the same floor. I was told the T moulding had to be used for warranty purposes. I wasn't thrilled at first but I did just hear you say to use them everytime you're at a door.

I enjoyed your video, it showed me exactly what I was thinking that the installers did it wrong to begin with. We had laminate flooring put in our hallway and living room and the installers made a mess of the doorways as well as floor molding. I could have done all of this myself had I had time, but I had a feeling that they were suppose to not leave so much of it in the doorway rather they should have cut back in order to put the transitions and reducers in like your video shows. See, the hallway and Livingroom had to have plywood to meet with the kitchen flooring that was already down 4 years ago and our hallway and Livingroom had thick carpeting that made it blend in with the flooring but now that the Livingroom carpet and hall was removed we need plywood but our other 4 rooms have rugs but much thinner and we're keeping them and now we have an unsightly situation because these installers went ahead and put the transitions/reducers in that extended beyond the doorway and looks like crap and I have pictures of everything that was done wrong. My question is this, now that they cut back some of our carpeting in the 4 other rooms to fit the transitions and beyond the door ways that need to be cut back we'll have a space that will show missing carpeting when someone comes back to correct what was done wrong. How can this be done in order to finish off the doorways correctly and still cover the bare missing rug? Yes, we were told that when it's done the correct way we will have this unsightly mess to look at. I was thinking that these came in different sizes in width but was told no. How do you think this should be done in order to make this all work? Your reply to this matter would be greatly appreciated, we've been sitting on this for over a month waiting for the company to send someone out to fix what was done wrong to begin with. It's a game these contractors play, pay and wait and hope the consumer doesn't notice or care how it looks......

Hi, what's the best way to transition from laminate to carpet? I assume it's the same idea as the reducer you used between concrete and laminate with carpet trimmed appropriately to look neat as a T moulding would have half the T floating above carpet (so not supported on one arm of the T) and potentially be damaged over time. Or are there special carpet to laminate transitions?. Thanks

I noticed you used countersunk screws to hold the anchor strip down. They looked like they were sticking up quite a bit. Doesn't that affect the height of the transition strip when installed?

Question for you Jeff... I’m about to install a 10mm thick laminate flooring, over concrete with a 2mm under pad. I’m wondering if I really “have” to install a transition? The room dimensions are 22’ by 27’ 6”. The 22’ is going to be the “length” of the board. The 27’ 6” will be the the “width” of the board. The boards are average, standard, 4’ long by 6” wide. What are your thoughts? I really don’t “want” to have a T-mould, midway (for aesthetics), but I don’t want it to shift apart either. What about flying the tongue and groove? Is that an alternative?

Plastic wall anchor. Plastic expansion anchor. Drill bit size depends on the anchor size. Drill should be a hammer drill. It pounds as it turns, breaking out the concrete.

I was in on the laminate floor craze when it first started in the mid 90's. PERGO was the original laminate floating floor system sold in the U.S. I was an endorsed PERGO Installer for Home Depots. I installed thousands of these floors. Back then we didn't have snap together flooring. It was all glue together which required special ratchet straps that went from the start coarse of flooring to the course you were gluing together. It made the installation process more timely but I believe it was a much better product. No seams over time and the melamine and aluminum oxide laminate finish was pretty darn tough. As far as installing transitions , I cut the track and transition to size. Snap the track onto the transition and simply adhere both to the sub floor with Power Grab construction adhesive. Works like a charm and your not fighting trying to squeeze the transition tongue into the flimsy mounting track screwed to the floor. However you can certainly do it as you showed. I'ts just a pain in the ass. Personally I think doing it my way makes a much more secure transition as well. Never had a call back on a transition failing.

I just had mine installed and the flooring company did that exact thing. I wasn't happy about it. They did say it was a warranty issue and they had to install it that way. plates for the transitions (we just call them trims in AU) should always be fitted WITHOUT the underlay under them to prevent rocking and in the case of the cheap and crappy plastic tracks cracking over time (get alumnium tracks when you have the option, they're out there).

I'm one of those dumb blondes who thinks she's a DIYer. That means I do everything the hard way. Because of water leakage from my fridge (yes I have laminate in the kitchen and bathrooms), the transition pieces (there are 2) between the damaged laminate and the dining room must be installed so they meet in a T with one piece across the pantry door and one piece from the cabinet to the pantry butting up to it at a 90 degree angle. I don't have a clue where to start. I can't afford to replace all of the flooring with tile or something else, so I'm jury rigging the transition. I could send a picture to give you a better idea what I'm trying to say...

What transition piece should be used for flooring of two different heights? I habe tile in my kitchen which goes to laminate into the living room. The piece the builder used isn't correct and its cracked down the edge length wise. There is mayne 1/4" difference in height. I plan to lay vinyl in one direction over the tile in the kitchen, and a different color vinyl running a different direction. Also is it recommended to go directly over existing laminate flooring?

First of all, you are clearly looking like you’re in your 50s and why are you not wearing a knee pads ? LOL I do this work every day and it’s part of the clothing I put on every day i’ve been on the knee pads

I have 2 different thickness of laminate that in trying to put a reducer on. Such a pain. I used a metal transition because the MDF reducer seemed to sit to high because there wasnt a big difference between the laminate. Its 12 mm to 8mm I believe.

Lots of good info. It helped me when I installed the transitions in my rental trailer. Thank you for the help. Also it was good to know where to stop on door jam.

Qu: getn ready to do flooring in basement, are vinyl or laminate planks better over concrete basement? I noticed that it looks like u have plastic underneath, is that required over concrete?

this is the most helpful video I have found for laminate to laminate transition on a concrete slab! I have waited to do transitions for about a year, longer on some parts! LOL Thank you for this video!

Hot glue on transition, adhesive on concrete, use your knees and hands for body weight for a minute and done. Drilling the concrete and using the plastic track is a waste of time.

Transition strips are stupid and ugly. I rip a piece and but up the ends using glue and finish nails. No ugly strips or bump!!

Thank you Jeff for all of your videos online. I have seen many... Was this installation on a cement floor in the basement? If so, what type of underlay/pad did you use. Thanks again for your incredible videos.

I really like how you run into a challenge, and show us how to fix it, rather than edit it out.

Wow, that blade has seen better days. I've done that exact thing to fix transitions from a wood floor to a laminate. Decent blade went through the whole thing in about 5 minutes. :)

Much needed video - thank you! My situation is going from a raised eng hardwood floor (b/c it was put on top of the existing floor) going down to the bathroom tile. Do you have tips or videos for that?

I hate oscillating tools. I think a circular saw would work better as long as you set the depth right and then just use the oscillating tool and the ends.
