Dialga's Fight to the Finish! --Faithfully Remastered-- Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

There are a lot of remasters/remixes of this song, but none of them hit right for me, so I decided to make my own.
I feel like a lot of remakes of this song tend to smother the high notes and add a ton of reverb and bass to make it feel more 'epic'. I think that kind of kills the energy of the song, since it relies on that shrill melody to carry it through. So for this remaster, I wanted to make sure every instrument in the mix was clear and at the correct volume.
I also wanted to keep the instrumentation as close to the original as possible, while also adding some additional modulation to the violins and flute to make it more dynamic.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it! If people like this a lot, I will remaster more Mystery Dungeon songs.

Little me bought explorers of sky "accidentally" because I was too dumb to realize it wasnt a main line game. To this day the best mistake I ever made. The first time I cried was when I heard this track for the first time, not even what happened after you beat dialga. It's fantastic

As far as I'm concerned, it _is_ one. My very first Pokemon game was Red Rescue Team. I was six years old, and I believe I got it used at GameCrazy (yeah, not even Game Stop. Defunct-ass GameCrazy. It was connected to a Hollywood Video. And I'm fucking 23, I'm not even that old. Anyway I digress lmao). I got it used, I'd never even heard of Pokemon, and I instantly fell in love. Of course, I played all the main series games and loved them too, but Mystery Dungeon (namely Red Rescue Team, Explorers of Time, and Explorers of Sky) always held the top place in my heart. These are the best the series has to offer and they do not fall short of that legacy.

I hope that if they make a remake of this game for the switch (or what ever the next system will be) that they do it justice so an entirely new generation can fall in love with this amazing game just as I did... the story telling, the grandeur of some of the locations we explored.. and of course our partners and the joys and heart breaks we went through together.

Is it really so hard to NOT change the tempo, NOT change the style, and polish up the parts that were effected by the DS sound quality? It’s a song about an ancient deity of time not a robot! Great work for maintaining the theme.

Even when making a remix or cover, most people want to find some way to make their version more unique, because standing out more from the original helps your work not be written off as just a worse or less memorable version due to nostalgia. At least that's my take on it.

I agree with the description, so many remasters and remixes try to stray away from the original composition, while the track already went hard all by itself. Very faithful recreation, great work! Though if there is any critique to be had, it feels like violin-sounding bit like at 1:27 is just a bit too loud, almost overshadowing every other element, making them stand out less.

i hate how autisticly i noticed one very VERY small mistake with the drums in the background from the get go. Making sound examples via text is hard, but im trying my best. So in the original, it goes like this: (x is a hit on the lower pitched drum, X is a hit on the higher pitched drum, - is a pause in the beat) x X - X | x X - X | x X - X | x (X X) x X | with the 2 higher pitched Drums in "()" being 2 half notes, which is missing in this one Other than that, its indeed a very faithful remaster, even 2 years later

Hmm, you might be right. Now that I'm listening on my good headphones I see what you mean. Perhaps it needs a V2. Lots of other remasters I've heard, aside from what I mentioned in the description, mix it in a way that I personally don't enjoy. I think they are more interested in making the song sound atmospheric and epic, which usually involves adding tons of reverb and bass. This is a fair enough take, but with a song that relies so much on the very high melody to carry it, I think it kind of misses the point. I also hear a lot of general mixing issues, this is kind of technical, but when you put all your instruments together, you want to make sure to cut out frequencies that might be overlapping with other instruments, otherwise they all sort of compete for space in the sound and it tends to get kind of muddy. A lot of remasters I've heard have this problem.
@lordvaderbossofdoom3960
@lordvaderbossofdoom3960 2 года назад
@@TheNeonWerewolf (tl;dr at bottom) I'd be thrilled to hear a second version! This is one of the flagship songs of the pmd repertoire, there's good reason to try again and give it a better shot. People like me are gunna take it as a representation of the quality of your work, you're going to want it to leave a mark. I agree. It really seems like most remasters just run it through an orchestra and with better midis and call it a day. Counterintuitively, when done like this, the full force of an orchestra works against making it 'epic'. Too many instruments scatter the core ideas, the sound is - as you said - muddy, and it makes it hard to pick out what's important and what's not. It just becomes noise. I'm an instrumentalist, not a sound guy, but from my underdeveloped classical point of view, I think the frequency problem almost solves itself if you have fewer ideas playing at once. The melody can go and do its beautiful thing, the accompaniment adds color, and maybe add in a counterpoint or something, but each idea should dance with each other in a clear, complementing way; things should be fine. At the very least, I haven’t run into a frequency interference problem yet. Then again, I've never composed anything, but that's my two cents. If you do decide to give Dialga's song another try, I encourage you to give it some time, and do your arrangement with a theme in mind; focus your ideas around a single goal so everything works towards selling that impact you're looking for. My two favorite approaches to this piece have been focusing on the plot perspective (the fate of the Future is in peril, and the only thing standing between Dialga's wrath and internal un-time are two shining heroes who challenge the god in desperate duel the save all of Time) and focusing on the character perspective (the hero and his bestest friend swallow their fear and face down the beast guarding the gates to Time. They, who put on a dauntless face and bear their swords to challenge he who has destroyed the future, and even against the beast's withering roar, swear by their friendship and duty and rush in and face the storming god). The first approach is able to focus an orchestra's power to present to you the vastness of the deciding battle of a story spanning the seas and stars, it does tend to use more brass, but there's enough thought put into it that it works. (No offense, but I’m pretty sure this is what all those dud remasters are trying to be.) The second approach focuses more on the contrasting tones of the two themes, representing how the heroes and Dialga both want different things and how they intend to achieve it (big, sinking chords against an intrepid flute and whatnot). It's important to know that when remixing and remastering these kinds of songs, you kinda have to be... '_more_' than the original. The redux almost needs to carry the story by itself, because you’re not playing the final fight while hearing it; the piece pretty much transitions from program music into absolute music. A good remix/remaster can sell the climactic nature of the piece all by itself (I say, that’s how I managed to get it without ever having played EoT/D/S myself). In this way, I suppose remixes have it better than remasters. A remixer’s intent is to take the music in a new direction, so it’s probably harder for them to make something without a strong theme/focus/goal. As a person who writes sometimes, other angles I can think of to think of the piece are: the clash between Hope and impossible odds, the final fierce fight the hero gets to share with his partner, and how and why the heroes’ friendship destins them to win. I recommend you try to draw on your personal experiences with the game too. (And this goes for everybody) feel free to take my ideas if you like them, I’ll never get to apply them anyways. It is fun to try and think of these things though, so don’t brush it off as ‘boring work’! Reading your new description, I urge you to think about why you’re trying to recreate the song so faithfully. Are you trying to make something that would fit in a remake of the Explorers games, are you trying to pay homage to the original work? Part of the original’s charm is the timbre of its chirpy midi, you need to take that into account too. Whatever you decide on, try to not impose irrelevant limitations on yourself. It’ll probably just hinder your work. Back to the music side of things, the singing flute definitely is the star of the show, but it would be unwise to neglect the non-chorus parts of the piece (I’m pretty sure it’s setup so the flute hits right). I wouldn’t overlook the potential for the verse-y parts to carry their own weight, Juno Songs’s lyrical cover showcases what I mean. If you don’t play any instruments yourself, I’d advise you to do some research on ‘musical phrasing’. There are advice videos on this kind of stuff, but you’ll hear it in almost all high-level instrumental stuff too. You’re probably going to need to color the solo with emphasis and personality to drive it home. After all, the piece is pretty much a one-movement super-short flute concerto : ) ; these solo portions tend to sound a bit flat without phrasing. Oh, wow. That was long. I guess I got too excited. Umm… Have a nice day! Tl;dr: Dialga’s Fight to the Finish is iconic, so it’s probably going to be one of your flagship pieces; it’s important to think about/decide/identify the soul/heart/theme of your piece, not just to unify your ideas, but to remove restrictions that don’t help you. Without a theme, the piece sounds kinda wishy-washy; the solo flute part is the best part and it can be expressed better than most people think, but the verses shouldn’t be disregarded either. Ps: have you ever thought about remixing? Personally, I like remixes more than remasters. Most of the time, remasters just sound a bit samey. Remixes are more flexible and probably better for one’s creativity; it’s a fresh approach while not losing what the original had. Remixes are fun. Also, I’ma shamelessly suggest you give ‘Wrapped in a Light’ from Gates a go. It’s amazing, short, but there definitely isn’t enough of it on the interwebs. Cheers!

Explorers of Sky simply deserves a remake. I don’t know what argument could be used against it. 1) The later PMD games were not nearly as good as BRT/RRT or Explorers trio, and no I don’t think they should make a new one with Gen 7-9 Pokémon 2) the release window between BRT/RRT and DX is 15 years (2005-2020). And explorers of Sky was released in 2009. It is 15 years later now. Wishful thinking but what if I said please? 😂 3) While Z-Moves can’t necessarily be implemented (although I guess they could integrate a partner and MC special team attack buff or something), Gigantamax/Dynamax could add a level of difficult to say boss battles post game (for recruiting purposes). That or terrastalisation (oh gosh, could you imagine fricking Diagla terrastylizing ugh. Chills). My point being, there are ways they could implement mainline game mechanics 4) besides everything else, the storytelling and the characters are such a draw for me. I mean come on. I’d even be interested in an expansion, where there’s a post storyline for meeting arceus 5) *personal take, please don’t attack me lol* Gen 4 was just. The bee’s knees man. There’s a reason why they chose Sinnoh for the Legends: Arceus title. There’s a reason why they made explorers of Sky after explorers of time/darkness. When they could’ve done the same with BRT/RRT (aka had a third in the set). It would be a wise move for the franchise to revisit this beloved game *again, personal take*
