The Diamondstar DA40 is a plane I know all too well. This plane outperforms every other airplane in gliding ratio not named Sling TSi. In this video, I'm going to give you all the information that you need about this aircraft. The DA40 is a great choice for training. It can be your first choice when buying an entry level modern plane, especially if you love the look.

As an owner of a 2008 XLS, I appreciated your video. 2 corrections - Glide range from 1000ft is about 2mi. I see 7.5gph fuel burn at cruise @135TAS. Love your videos. Would like to fly the TSI sometime, let me know if your ever in metro Detroit area.

Thanks for clarifying. 16 nm in 1,000 ft would be something like an 80:1 glide ratio. I knew there had to be a conversation error in there somewhere. Still super impressive tho

@@mojogrip The DA 40 listed at best as 13:1 glide ratio which would be 13000 feet. They are officially listed as low as 8.8:1. The Avio risen 912 is 23:1 for comparison and probably the best glide ratio outside of a moto glider

@@mojogrip your still wrong the glide ratio for the sling is definitely no where close to 16miles for 1000ft.

Although the Piper Tomahawk T-Tails had a safety issue regarding spins, the Diamonds have never shared that problem. Part of …CORRECTION Diamond’s (I originally typed “Piper’s”) solution was to add stall strips to the wings. You can see some real small ones on this aircraft. At 7:49 as Mike walks toward the front of the left wing, you can see one (only about 5 inches wide) just inward of the left landing light that is on the leading edge of the left wing. The DA-20 (Eclipse) and DA-40 (Star) just want to keep on flying when it comes time to land. A real joy to fly. My longest cross country was in a DA-40 from Atlanta to Destin and back in 2004. It had a 430/530, but the rental place did have some with G1000’s. That took extra training to rent of course. A wonderful trip! Nice Review!

A flight school at my FBO uses Diamonds. A mix of DA40, 40 NG’s, and DA42’s. It always sticks out how little fuel it takes to top them off; needing only like 30 gallons from near empty compared to others that take 40 to 50. One time an instructor did a crazy 75 degree power climb from take off in a 40 NG, so I believe it that these things got some performance chops!
@suzukirider9030
@suzukirider9030 2 года назад
The DA-40-NG runs on as little as 5 GPH, although it's Jet-A so it's a bit heavier per gallon although the volume of fuel tanks is less. A DA-40 cannot do a 75 degree climbout. Not even with an 100lbs pilot and running on fumes. Not even close. They can gain speed then pitch to 75 for a few seconds but that's a good way to get into a spin if you don't nose-down before power-on stalling

Thanks for making this video. I am just getting into the idea of learning to fly. Gliding is one of the main things that I want to do, but I also like the option of having an engine. It almost looks like this plane has a similar design to the gliders. Is that true?is that why you said it has such a good gliding range? You mentioned that it does not have a parachute, but could you install one?

We have Da40 at our club and I was considering changing to it after my ppl licence, but after I've seen one pilot solo Da40 taking off on a long runway, I immediately changed my opinion and will change to VL3 instead. Da40 is a wonderful plane in the air but the take-off roll is very dismal
@suzukirider9030
@suzukirider9030 2 года назад
Was that an DA-40NG by chance? Those are 10hp less at sea level while 100kg heavier, and more nose-heavy. Their rotation and stall speeds are like 8kn more than the TDI. I've flown in a DA-40-TDI (the ones powered by an IO-360). Full tanks and 3 ppl onboard. It was okay. Better than a C-172 with the same. The -NG versions are supposedly good for high TAS at high-altitudes, but they do need a decent runway to takeoff.

@@suzukirider9030I used to instruct at a large school teaching just foriegn students, I've seen da20's go through crashes that would have killed the pilots in other planes, once a guy hit the approach lights & took one with him stuck in whe wing, the student thought it was something with his gear (?) Anyways he overshot with the huge light stuck in the wing & did a circuit!, Another guy crashed into the ditch & went from 70kts to 0 in 6 inches! Totaled the plane, the tail scorpioned, the guy survived but he hit his head on the attitude indicator when the floor cracked! Any other plane the engine would have made it's way into the cabin. @suzukirider9030

No, 16:1. 16nm is obviously way too much. 1.6nm is like 8:1 - is more realistic and a C-182 but the DA-40 can do better than that. 16:1 is a "claimed" number. I wouldn't bet on more than 14:1 in a practical situation though. But it can do way more than 8:1 - I've flown a C-182 and that thing DROPS if you cut the power to full idle. A DA-40 glides better. Maybe almost twice better.
