@Nathan Andrews : Let's agree to disagree on one point : Your statement on its structure is false, it is not hexagonal : Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic (see for yourself : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_cubic ) . What is nevertheless true in your statement : Diamond has, as you said, a cleavage plane and is therefore more fragile in some orientations than others. Therefore, diamond has not the greatest toughness, also it has the greatest hardness (being implied that the diamond evaluated has the less structural defaults and impurities).

It could potentially just either be a diamond enamel, or a ceramic formed from diamond, but yeah if it was raw diamond then it would just shatter apart.

I think the idea of the diamond helmet is to be single use. It might shatter, but shattering would absorb the force of the bullet.

This video is the opposite of realistic. Hardness =/= Toughness. Diamond is hard but its fracture toughness is low and it's a brittle material, it will shatter once a bullet hits it.

diamond in reality isnt that expensive or rare, its just companies tricked consumers into thinking diamond jewelry is significantly more expensive than it really is

Rough cut diamonds that you buy in bulk are typically only a millimeter wide at most, a solid plate of diamond would cost *astronomically* more even if prices weren't inflated, especially since artificially making diamonds of that scale is incredibly difficult if not impossible.

@@TheDestroyer55e it kind of is, especially epitaxial diamond, which is what you'd need for armor. A 2inch diameter, 1mm thick price of diamond will run you over 40k. What is cheap are diamond particles like what are used in machining bits and saws.

Depends on the hardness of the bullet. It’s entirely possible that the projectile would fragment on impact and disperse its kinetic energy across the surface of the diamond, which would in turn probably allow a sufficiently-thick helmet to remain largely intact. Idk though, I haven’t studied physics in a few years and am just spitballing.

@@OneBiasedOpinion a sufficiently thick helmet made of anything will work. steel performs far better than diamond does, since diamond can very easily shatter, especially recieving that much force in one area

@@mifigor1935 Well, I haven’t seen it tested in real life, and I assume diamond isn’t like obsidian where it’s basically glass. Plus the diamond helmet is fairly thick, so I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t shatter to a bullet.

Bone doesn't cavitate that way and a 9mm doesn't have enough kinetic energy to cause cavitation anyways. For a 9mm effectively only what's in front of the bullet is destroyed, known as the crush effect. This is why people can occasionally survive being shot with even multiple small caliber rounds if nothing vital is hit, whereas surviving a rifle bullet to the chest is essentially unheard of.
