Panthers were being made out of mostly brittle steel plate by the end of the war. Germans didn't have alloying metals left to make quality steel by the time Panthers were coming off the production lines in quantity. Big hits of any kind tended to cause massive cracking

These two don't know much about metallurgy. Having less trace elements makes the hardening window narrower, e.g. QC drops. Not all steel is junk as a result, it's just harder to make it good. Notice the 'german steel people' never tell you about the T34s being hobbled to 2 maybe 3 gears at best or the non hardened transmission gears, the poor welds from some plants, etc.

Is2s were made mostly in factories which used womem and child labor, as men were on the front. There were also lots and lots of mobile field workshops especialy for is2s, as alot of them broke, had cracks only from beeing driven and in general had tons of problems with quality.

One of the more interesting mechanics of armor penetration is when a plate can resist the detonation but the mass of the impact simple overwhelms the armor. The 152mm cannon would be capable of killing many a modern tank if it hit in the correct location. And by correct I mean if it detonates over the top of the hull or turret. The explosive force is more than most tanks are designed to take.
@LuizBarros99
@LuizBarros99 2 года назад
From what it looked like, most of the fragments traveled roughly towards the transmission. (but potentially still deadly towards the driver and machine gunner, not to mention the massive pressure/shock wave that they would be hit with) But my question is, do you think that the shock/pressure wave would still be potentially deadly towards the crew in the turret?
@LuizBarros99
@LuizBarros99 2 года назад
Also, needless to say that this tank would be combat ineffective. The front of the hull (including the transmission) would be very mangled, and I could even imagine this impact being violent enough to damage distant parts of the tank (not necessarily directly hit by the explosion)

The front plate seem to be unimpressed :). Could you simulate same HE shell hitting same vehicle/armor setup at two different velocities ? IIRC the Russian did (after Ww2?) some tests of what affect armor penetrating ability of HE shell and to the surprise it came out from tests that kinetic energy of the shell was a big factor. Same 122mm HE shell would be able to penetrate very different plate thickness at 500m/s than at 700m/s. I wonder if this is really depending on added kinetic energy/momentum of shell mass. Sadly I don't have a link for that at hand. I also wonder if any fuse setting other than "instant" is possible against armor (other than really thin plates) or the fuse would be destroyed and not work at during penetration.

@Alche987

@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 so in this case the armor got hit by a limited number of fast particles? Is it possible to simulate just pressure from a point?
@Wotplaya4
@Wotplaya4 2 года назад
@@Alche987 he meant that the simulated pressure wave is what created the fast moving shrapnel pieces, both shrapnel and pressure wave are present. And yes the amount of particles are fairly limited compared to real life (that is the catch with FEM, but good choice of mesh shape and size can give good results still).
@Alche987
@Alche987 2 года назад
@@Wotplaya4 yeah, thats what im thinking, the total amount of energy delivered to the armor would be way less too, right? Maybe it is possible to tell the software to inject pressure on each part of the armor based in the distance to the center of the explosion or something..
