This episode of The Signature Move Tier List dives into the crafting system of Steve, both in Minecraft and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With stiff competition from the likes of Kirby and Link, can Steve hold his ground? Let's find out... and do a bit of Minecraft Let's Play while we're at it. I hadn't played the game in like 8 years. It was fun.

It's great to hear that, even when collecting what is more or less backroll footage (which is also informative!) you enjoy the game of Smash on its own, as well as just delving into games as a product to the point of critiquing each one as a work of art. If there's anything I can say, it's that you yourself, should never be considered something to be "Mocked".

I have a little critique about building in combat: remember that there are public Minecraft servers dedicated to combat, and some versions of it allow the placement of blocks. This is super useful in many scenarios such as escaping, chasing, camping, any defensive option, etc. This is paralleled in smash pretty darn well, but slightly modified for balance and matching the combat of smash, as you mentioned you only really place a few blocks at a time. This still is very similar to pvp based games in Minecraft like UHC. I recommend trying it out just to see my point. Overall, very smart design from the smash team.

As an avid redstoner I think his contraptions are somewhat rudimentary in design. They look complex but in reality they're extremely simple, and also lack the efficiency that's possible in the game (the designs are also pretty oldschool as well). That being said, he did mention that it took him a few days to learn the techniques used, which is very impressive for someone who claims to not have played the game in over a decade. I've personally been playing the game nonstop from 2011-2017 and 2019 to today, so it's way too easy for someone like me to quickly pass judgement on someone's redstone ability, and I myself am not what you'd call a "redstone master". If you want to see REAL redstone masters, look up members of SciCraft. Their contraptions are absolute wizardry.

Amazing vid, but one thing I wish to point out as both a steve main and a minecraft veteran since xbox edition. Minecraft never tells you exactly how to do stuff because its a game about testing, and learning stuff on your own, or learning from friends. You can also search up tutorials, or the wiki, but doing so doesn’t just teach you the game, but also the community. Minecraft in a single player sense is a good game. Minecraft in a multiplayer sense is a phenomenal masterpiece. Minecraft allows you to connect with eachother. I would have never met some online friends if it werent for the game. And steve plays similar in smash. He seems complicated, but you’re meant to discuss with the community about his gameplay. The offical steve discord is the first smash cord ive ever joined, and I’ve learned lots about steve, from basic advice to complex techs like phantom block place, and its thanks to the community. Steve and minecraft are both meant to connect you with other people who are interested. Also quick side note you dont need to have redstone torches next to every single powered rail, the power extends several blocks.

I believe that was point the exactly. They don't have anything to do with crafting, which is not only a huge missed opportunity considering his sleeping and perfect shield animations do use his crafts (MockRock did mention water buckets and ender pearls as possible inclusions), but it also makes it much harder to read Steve's various states in the fight, which is a pretty major design flaw that could've been fixed.

15:00 That's kind of the point. You're not just supposed to explore the world around you, but every nook and cranny. The point is that you learn by experience and discovery. While that design methodology can be harmful in some aspects, it does a lot more good as there is always the option to look it up on the wiki or youtube. Also, your example on expanded functionalty with the farmland isn't an intentional part of the block's design, so it makes no sense for it to be explained in game. Those are my only real gripes with the video though. As someone who has played Minecraft for probably 1000+ hours at this point, I think you definitely did the crafting system justice.

I have to disagree with you on the "design" portion of the video. While many of the issues you cite can be really bad to deal with, a player does not necessarily need to know all the information to play/enjoy the game. Sure, Redstone is really fun to mess around with and you can make all sorts of cool things with it, but it isn't really needed to fully enjoy the game. I didn't even know anything about Redstone or some of the more complex items in the game until 2-3 months after I started playing the game, but I could still play it and have fun while doing so. I don't need to build a giant iron farming machine; I can just mine some iron ore, etc. I also do think that if the game tried to put some tutorials in (especially for Redstone), they would be AWFUL (like most fighting game tutorials) and most players would need to go to third parties to learn them. In my eyes, the complexity of the game and the fact that you can discover new things by messing around adds to the depth of the game. Older players are rewarded for tinkering and discovering new stuff while new players don't get punished for not doing that and can still do the same exact things. I have friends that suck at doing Redstone stuff and exploring the technical aspects of the game but can still enjoy it for its other strengths. That, in my mind, should give Minecraft a much higher rating on the design portion. And just one more comment: I think PVP and online is a pretty big portion of the game (that you did not cover, perhaps by choice? idk), and does flesh out the fighting and hand-to-hand combat a bit more. Managing all your potions, resources, and weapons to utterly dominate an opposing player can be really fun (similar to how preparation in any sort of game can make the battle more satisfying). Minecraft also has a bit more in-depth fighting mechanics than would first meet the eye, as evidenced by using tools like the fishing rod, items like the lava bucket, placing down blocks or trapping players with pre-planned traps. Furthermore, he design of the game lends itself really well to user-created multiplayer game modes, leading to many exciting ideas: bedwars, skyblock, etc. Overall, I would give Minecraft a 4.5/5 on the design. It definitely has flaws in terms of the learning curve, but these flaws are balanced out by the fact that there is no one way to best play the game, an ideology I think every video game designer should seek to implement. Anyways, great video overall! Really like your content!

Yeah I thought it was really weird that he bemoaned an engine exploit that let's you move items through blocks as unintuitive and had to be taught by other players, but in the next breath said it wouldn't be fair to credit Minecraft with creations by its players. If their creations can't be counted as boons, they shouldn't be held against it either.
@lasercraft32
@lasercraft32 Год назад
I'd also like to add that the reason the crafting table exists is _actually_ a clever design, unlike what MockRock seems to think. It helps ease the player into figuring out the basics when they first start playing, and if they had a 3x3 grid it would be a lot harder to figure out what to do from the start (especially since the game didn't always have a crafting recipe book). Its a humble start to a humble adventure. The game is meant to be fairly intuitive to figure out, but also has a lot of extra hidden secrets and tricks they don't tell you. Its why you see so many full grown adults playing it, and using it to make amazing things. Its accessible to casual new players, but expands to its greatest for long-time veterans.

@SeisoYabai
@SeisoYabai 2 года назад
It would also partially negate the need for an early base of operations. The creating table is a core part of the progression and gameplay loop. To be able to make everything on the fly would cheapen the base building aspect of the game and push it towards the "story" bit of it. Returning to your crafting table to see what you can make with your new finds is part of what incentivizes you to stop, head back home, and break away from the mining and dangers. If you want to nullify that, you have to pay the cost of taking a table with you, taking up valuable inventory space and thus pushing you to get back to your chests sooner. It provides you with your earliest and simplest choices in the game, as prior to that the only choices you have are what kind of trees you want to break first. Upgrades to it could be quite nice, but removing its necessity is the absolute worst thing you could do and would pretty brutaly butcher the paving of the early game.

14:45 the crafting table is important in minecraft because it insentivises the player to build. If you don't want to carry your crafting table everywhere, you have to place it down somewhere. And if you have to place it down you want it to be secure. This is the same reason shulker boxes are end game loot, campfires are destroyed without silk touch, and the players movement speed and mobility are low. The game wants you to produce infistructure to help you get around and progress. Also, minecrafts advanced mechanics, to someone who theoretically knows nothing about minecraft, aren't meant to be accessed easily. They are meant to be discovered and shared in the community. This is a interesting design philosophy that we don't see a lot today anymore.

The Minecraft formula that he brings to the table works surprisingly well in a platform fighter, which allows Steve to get extremely creative with his strategies, much like in Minecraft itself. i think i should say a few things: unarmored zombies have 2 points of armor (8% damage resistance); two swipes with a fully-enchanted netherite sword would be enough to kill a creeper, which has the same amount of health but lacks the damage resistance. minecraft has no polygons; the world is entirely crafted (ha) from voxels (volumetric pixels). this becomes apparent beyond a certain distance from the center of the world, when objects like torches start stretching and movement becomes stutter-y as the game loses precision over the position of objects. while the graphics might look bad, they have come a long way; the netherrack (originally "bloodstone") texture in particular looks much better now than it did years ago. compare its current blood-red cobblestone-like texture to the pixel barf of its old texture.

I think mining and building would make more sense as a signature move because 1: There are lots of other games with crafting systems like this (some of which came before) and 2: The building and breaking mechanic is something completely unique to Minecraft and is what make the game so popular in the first place. You are able to pick up and use literally everything except the rock that stops you from tumbling to your death. Other than that if you can see it, it's yours to take. No other game has done this but Terraria, which took heavy inspiration from Minecraft.

I know about all that, I always spend a decent chunk of time researching these topics before I even start writing the script. It doesn't actually alter my point, you're still using the most powerful version of the most ubiquitous weapon.

I think Steve might be really good into Peach but really bad into Pikachu. Peach typically likes to fish for near-ground hits with very fast whiff punishing where Steve can just take to the skies and mine on an anvil. Pikachu's efficient aerial rushdown can kick him off blocks easily as well as pressure him from mining too easily in general. And can use thunderstalling to avoid block-gimping(off the side farther than blocks can go).

You know what I want to see from you? An Octopath Traveler review. I always see the music from the game on your videos and you seem to have a liking for that game, as do I. I know it would be very different from your current smash content, and it probably won’t be as popular, and I don’t even know if you would like doing that, but you are the type to enjoy analyzing video games and I want to see you tackle reviewing video games. If you can, give it a try.

I feel like you do have a point in saying that there needs to me more ways to distinguish Steve's states just by looking at him. Maybe to make it a bit easier to determine whether you need to tech or Steve is just in the air maybe Steve could turn red after being launched like in Minecraft and once he hits the ground he returns to his normal self.

About Minecraft guides. I think it's cool that they've implemented some guides in game in bedrock edition of Minecraft. It's still far from the best but that's a good move in my opinion.

I know you touched on this but competitive minecraft combat is significantly more interesting than normally portrayed. It’s very boxing like, where your only option is offensive swings and defensive guards. There’s strange intricacies and other effects aswell

i think it should be S tier. i feel like a new way to use his blocks in combos just keeps growing, which really fits with minecraft as a creative game. i know this video came out just about amonth after steve, but i feel like an update or at least mentinoning it in a new video would be nice

My main problem with the design segment is you think that Minecraft is 1.Supposed to look good when the point of Minecraft is for you to use your imagination to build,explore,and sometimes craft.2.Why would they spend 1,000,000 pages on red stone they want you to discover it

Blocks are probably just a tool to give the player as many ways to be creative and expressive with the character as possible. They don't need to reassemble how they work 1 to 1 in the game, they're the translation of building and creative options mixed together
