Welcome to The Signature Move Tier List, where we dive into the history of an iconic video game technique, break it down in a series of trials, and finally, stack it up against the competition. Today we tackle Kirby's Inhale, which, including the Copy Abilities granted to him through its use, must be a contender for the most versatile signature move of all time... as well as one of the hardest to research. Note that this will not include content from the recently released Kirby Fighters 2, as will be explained in the criteria outline near the start of the video, but don't worry, there's still plenty of games to pick from!

This one was an ordeal to make, Kirby's Inhale is a massive signature move, but it was also a lot of fun to go back and play these titles! Ah, Kirby's Inhale. A simple, yet elegant move on a character that doesn't even look like he has a stomach. But if it allows the little pink puffball to become a literal destroyer of universes, then I have no problems with not questioning the logic of the Kirby series.

his does have one, its a pocket universe thats infinetly large and it has an almost void like atmosphere, so it behaves like a broken window in a plane and when it gets full( only miracle fruits in 3deluxe have been shown to fill his infinite pocket universe) all the nergy will burst and compress turning his void in a blackwhole wich leads to his hypernova form, his pocket universe can also store stuff into it lik shown in squeak squad and the anime, and can store copy abillities for later use and also combining them so thats about it when it comes to kirby stomach lore

I'd say Hadoken rather than Shoryuken, but Core-A gaming already did an analysis about it and its historical impact on fighting games and how it's singlehandedly responsible for creating interactions from afar where you'd normally wouldn't be able to hit your opponents, creating an entire character archetype off a single move. In all fairness, a Mock Rock video on the subject would be significantly different, but the Hadouken analysis itch has been scratched already

@@ReikuYin having any darkness in him actually goes against the lore you're referring to. I'm pretty sure it's just obliviousness considering how little effort most of his destruction takes anyway. He just isn't really thinking about what he's doing. To him it's not killing a friend for personal gain, it's "oh hey, they have an ability I need, I can get the ability from them."

Enemies respawn if they've been off screen for a bit. Death is not permanent in the kirby universe. This was not the case in mass attack, where the final boss was the god of death.

Well, Smash 64 still exists. Smash 64's EXTREMELY generous hitstun benefits Kirby in a huge way, and his air mobility gives him a unique ability to take advantage of offstage opponents at little personal risk.

Honestly, I think he's incredibly underrated. He has decent combo potential, incredible versatility, and decent kill power. I think the reason he's seen as a lower tier Smash character is because he doesn't have any moves or gimmicks that are downright overpowered like many top tiers.

I don’t like his side-B and I wish he had some sort of projectile without the help of an opponent’s special, maybe something like he can spit out stars like he does in his games, it would kinda be like when he spits out an opponent, but it could travel way longer and faster.

@@graysonwells21 I'd say make inhale able to spit back out projectlies that kirby himself inhales instead of just healing off of them and make it so that when kirby taunts his copy ability actually turns into a star that kirby can inhale again and spit out as a projectile attack. This way kirby gets two potentially strong projectiles that aren't overly spamable since their dependant on kirby's opponent and how the player uses copy ability.

"If you can think of a way for Kirby to interact with a level, there's probably been a copy ability that lets him do it." Not complaining about the overall score, obviously, but after a sentence like that, if this ability didn't warrant a 5 in Utility... what would? I get it isn't super great in Smash, but like... you just said it could feasibly do anything you'd need it to in the main series. Looking forwards, especially at the abilities you've put up for voting in this episode and the previous, what could possibly hit a higher bar, or even MATCH such a description?

Utility in the mainline Kirby platformers would absolutely be a 5 if evaluated alone. Air Ride and the Smash series don't have amazing utility, so take that starting 5 and reduce it. That's the logic behind this score.

@@kaleidoIV I suppose the Mega Buster COULD possibly meet such a bar. Given that the first 8 stages are always possible to complete with the Buster alone, it is designed to take on any early-game challenge, with some games allowing him to also complete the ENTIRE game Buster-only. This means it is designed to be viable in essentially every circumstance, regardless of what other special weapons or utilities you may or may not have at any given moment.

The funny thing is that as time goes on we actually do get a more competitively useful inhale in the smash series. Inhale’s probably the best it’s ever been in Smash in modern day Ultimate thanks to numerous changes in its startup and copy loss chance.

Hey I’m not really hating but just when you started listing things around 4:01 and you just listed things so so slowly and awkwardly, I just feel like you should say it faster just show the moves on screen and move on. I also felt like the awkwardness of that section was accentuated by how quiet the background music is. Usually I don't notice how quiet it is because MockRock talks over it fast enough, but those long pauses made it REALLY noticeable just how quiet the background noise is.

I always wanted Kirby to say something different when he taunts with a copy ability. Of course, he’d lose the ability, but it might be a cool Easter egg, even if it wasn’t for every possible ability. We’d finally get an opportunity for Kirby to say lines that weren’t tied to the neutral special but still reference the character he inhales.

As a Kirby main since the original Smash, I reluctantly agree with the findings. The move itself is fine and the synergy with the copy abilities can be amazing. The trade off of slow movement and lack of range has had me wishing that it would be nerfed as a trade for range and speed. Seeing it laid out like this has given me a better understanding as to why it is what it is. Thank you for your thoroughness in these, you do an awesome job in every video you put out. If I can give one critique on this video, there were a lot of stretches of awkward silence, namely when you were listing off the copy abilities around 4:30. I know there was music in the background but it was VERY quiet. If anything, should you find yourself in a similar situation to this one, I’d honestly suggest either not leaving any long pauses in your dialogue, or include the game’s sound from the clip you were using.

Besides range, my biggest problem with Inhale in Smash is the way proyectiles work. Why is Kirbs a sitting duck when he absorbs one? His gameplay in the first game was all about shooting stuff back at his enemies, yet nobody playing the character seriously would even consider doing so.

I think that exist to represent the risk-reward factor of standalone inhale When you have something inhaled and you don't throw it away you can't float but not inhaling at all limits your offensive options When the copy abilities were created, that's were that problem was eliminated, because a lot of copy abilities gave huge offensive options in mid air That's a pretty acurate representation of kirby in smash

You touched on a lot of interesting points about Kirby's voice. Makiko Omoto is such a great voice actress, she does a great job! It's no wonder Kirby has so much voice variety, since Omoto also voices Ness and Sayaka Maizono (from Danganronpa). Also, fun fact: That deep scream Kirby does with the Mike Ability was voiced by Masahiro Sakurai himself, at least in Kirby Super Star. In the remake it was an imitator, and recently the deep scream is removed entirely. But regardless, Sakurai said he screamed "CHESTO!" (aka chest) at the top of his lungs; I do not remember what it means, but my head keeps telling me it's a phrase in Japan said when one is victorious or has performed well. I'm likely wrong, though. Awesome video though! This was a great analysis of Kirby's iconic, staple move!

@@webbowser8834 Indeed! It sadly has been replaced in the modern games with Kirby yelling in rock fashion in his usual cute voice. I definitely miss it, and I much prefer it over the new one. But Star Allies also has a cute Friend Action you can do with Mike where everyone on the team rocks out like their in a concert performance! For me, that makes up for it

If you're thinking about pikmin gliding that Kirby can do with Olimar's ability, it was patched, sadly. Other than that, it's a mediocre projectile move that doesn't even work mid-air

Kirby has a stronger neutral special of every character he inhales. This shows his true strength. Honestly if his inhale was a frame 1 or 2 move with a bigger range he would easily be an A tier character. However if his air mobility was the same as Jigglypuff as well added to the buffed inhale than he would be beyond broken and probably be seen as the second coming of Brawl Metaknight.

I came into this video thinking we would talk specifically about the inhale itself not what it adds to kirby's movesets as a whole. I had it ranked at maybe B tier by itself but I agree with the outcome you came too. Counting all the things inhale gives Kirby access to for it's score makes it easily S tier. I hope we get to see the tier list for screw attack or flacon punch next time.

Personally i'd put the move into A and not S. I just can't get over the insane amount of work that was put into this move, yet... You kinda get punished for trying to use it in mid-high play? Yeah there's confirms into it, but still... If it was easier to use normally, if it gave just a bit more reward, that subsequently would get more people to appreciate how much inhale has. At the very least I wouldn't give it a 5 for design, but still I understand the reasoning (for smash anyways, aside from smash it's an S tier move)

Here's a blast from the past. Volume 132 of Nintendo Power contained the 1999 Nintendo Power Awards and "Kirby's Swallow Attack (Super Smash Bros.)" actually won the "Coolest Weapon or Move" category.

I think the only drawback to inhale in SSB is the dependency of having an enemy with a worthwhile ability to copy. Incorporating your foe's ability into your play-style also takes a lot of time (kinda like playing with Pokemon Trainer requires you to learn 3 different characters to play properly). I like Kirby a lot, and in smash is the one I recommend my friends when they were new to the game, but after that initial test most people move to a different main for consistency.

Inhale even without a good copy ability still does give a good amount of usefulness, and I feel like the complexity it gives in learning how to incorporate the abilities is a perfect representation of how kirby games are easy to play, but really tough to master. The low entry and high skill ceiling really tie together the character.

sleep may well have once been added as a joke, but i remember generally having trouble with one of the stages in kirby returns to dreamland because of all the powerup globes(or whatever they're actually called) that had the sleep ability inside of them...

The VA of Kirby said she's not told any information about fighters when doing the voices for copy abilities. She joked that she was able to recognize Terry because she played Fatal Fury with her brother. Just a fun fact and I think it definitely shows that well deserved 5/5 in style points

My only gripe, if I were to pick a significant flaw with the move, is that in smash it is limited to always copying the neutral special of each character. I'd argue that for some characters it would be not only more useful but also more iconic to copy a different special. Wild Link's Remote Bomb (or even Spin Attack) would be the biggest example of this, with other notable examples being Ike's Aether, Banjo's Wonderwing, Pikachu's Thunder, Jigglypuff's Rest, Sonic's Spin Dash or Ken's Shoryuken, in my opinion.

Remember, Kirby's core concept is his simplicity. Copying a move and needing to learn it is already complicated enough, but then it's gonna be a different one for each character? It's fine as is.

@@Moss_Dude @ThiroSmash That plus, Kirby's anatomy is drastically different from almost every other character, how could he do things like gut check, scewer, whirling fortress, roto arm, counter surge, and many other moves. And how could he do pokemon switch, star bits, wonderwing, and almost all of Olimars special moves since they require a separate entity?

@@Moss_Dude If you'd have to learn one move from every character anyways, why not make it their most memorable? I'm pretty sure you would remember better WIld Link's remote bomb than you would a generic arrow. It's easier to remember and it's a better introduction to the character, it works perfectly for Kirby's concept. And as for @Jason Ramirez, I don't get why those would be issues. Kirby already has moves like Bayo's guns or Ivy's bullet seed and they look just fine; for somehting like Ridley's skewer they could just attach the tail to the hat, problem solved. As for the "unique character mechanics"... Look at how Olimar is handled. And Kirby doesn't get thinkgs like Go! or Arsene or Limit Break, so I don't know what the problem is.
