In 1969 I was 5 years old and loved watching Lost in Space and the Robot. I'll never forget seeing the Remco robot in a store and I balled my eyes out because my Dad couldn't afford to get it for me
I'm the same age! Yeah we found them at the old Woolco store and I remember I wanted it so bad too. That robot is gold to me especially now that I realize what a sacrifice my dad made money wise to get it for me. I think they were kind of expensive for the time.
This is so cool! I love these. I have the Trendmaster one and the little YM-3. I can't wait to get the grey Diamond Select B-9 and Robby for Christmas. I remember the "my sensors indicate an intruder is present" on the Trendmasters one I think
Yes the Trendmasters one was actually very cool! I love the moving, motorized functions of it. Guess I should have shown that in the video. There was also a limited run of smaller B9s from Trendmasters as well. The Jupiter 2 that also came out has become an expensive collector's item. I managed to get them before they disappeared.
Yes! And I also don't like how the arms point out sideways instead of straight forward like they should. The old Trendmasters has that problem as well. I posed them with the arms bent forward as much as I could.
I’ve seen several videos with the Remco robot, but no one mentions that it’s the perfect scale for the 60s G.I.Joe. Joe and the robot went on many adventures together when I was a kid. Joe found the robot on a deserted planet and fixed him up. They became friends and went off to find the Robinsons.
Haha! That's awesome! I made a robot out of Lego (before it was called Lego) based on the Mystery Island robot which was the Lost In Space Robot redesigned and he was my G.I. Joe's companion! Great minds think alike! 😁😄
I had the Remco robot as a kid. I managed to break his claws a couple of times. Not sure if he is still at my parents’ house. I met Mark Goddard at a convention about 20+ years ago, and he still didn’t look much different than he did as Major West at that point. He was a nice guy, I ran into him in dealer’s room buying stuff for his kids(?!). It was so surreal meeting someone you watched on TV for years, you feel like you know them but you don’t.
I totally agree. It's surreal when you meet them. I got to spend an entire weekend with Mark at a convention and had lunch with him. Even helped him move some stuff from his hotel room. I was inside a replica of the Robot and we had a little moment in front of an audience. It was a blast. We also did his photo shoot together for fans. He was absolutely awesome. It was the best convention I've ever attended.
Great review. Also really wonderful story after the review. The cast are really nice. I have met a few of them over the years. I'm a huge LIS fan too. My son was born in Oct 1997 and we named him Will.
I had no idea if one held the button for several seconds that it would cycle through all the phrases! I just tested mine and sure enough, it worked as you demonstrated. As for more "variants", they could, in theory, do more "Remco" styles. Like you, I (once) owned a Remco with the red torso and tread base and the blue arms and legs. They could do that one. Remco had a few other combinations as well based upon photos I've seen. What I hide hard to fathom is the supposed need to enlarge the torso to accommodate the electronics. I mean, the TrendMasters version had motors and gearworks in addition to the LEDs and voice chips. One would reason the motor(s) and gears would require "X" amount of space, buT electronics? This isn't the age of vacuum tubes! ;-) Unless...the BUBBLE had to be a certain size to house the chip board that pulses the "finger" lights (a feature I did not expect the toy to have before I got it). But a bubble that size would look even more "off" if paired with a torso the same size as the TrendMasters version. To help (at least partially) balance things, the torso was enlarged, but to save money on molds and materials (primarily the plastic), the legs and treads stayed the same size as the TrendMasters assembly. That's my unsubstantiated speculation, anyway.
It quite possibly was a money saving measure to leave the legs and treads the original size. I've never taken one of these apart to see what all is inside the torso section. There must have been a reason for them to enlarge the torso though. I'd like to see what's in there but I don't want to risk messing things up by taking it apart. I'm hoping they do more variations of these as they seem to have been big sellers for Diamond Select. I love them all! Thank you for the great comment!
Great video, I love these too. I’m surprised Diamond Select has not yet done a purple variation with the crown, scepter, cape and voice clips from the episode The Mechanical Men. I can’t imagine that not being popular as a collector’s item and it would allow them to use a different voice for the sound clips as well. Diamond Select, are you listening? LOL.
I got one of the lost in space robots when I was a kid think it was 1969. was one of my favorites, along with my deluxe reading tank, I dont have it today, cant believe I havent got one to replace it as I have gotten alot of my child hood toys in my collection,,
@@outsider238 yes they are, I have nearly every childhood toy that I really liked, I sold a lot when I moved had no room for them, but the ones I really enjoyed I kept.lots of tin robots, marx shooting gallery, remco tanks, ect. the only thing stops me from getting the robot is, for the day it was nice, because its plastic and the design kinda robs me of ther realistic look.. I know thats how they were, but I dont think I would enjoy it as much.. although it really would make my collection almost complete..I have been thinking about getting another 60's tin robot in place of it.. as I really like those.. recently I sold my 16inch lost in space robot, I kept in the box since new, sold it on ebeay for 65.00 kinda regret it, I do have the 2ft tall trendmaster and jupiter 2, I got back when they came out, those I wont part with..
@@madvette74 Yeah I was never a fan of the inaccurate look of the Remco robot but it was all we had back then and as a kid I wanted it so bad. The clear plastic they used for the bubble always warps over time on these. I never let my robot bump into anything when I played with it and we didn't have a large home when I was a kid. The only area I could run him was the very small kitchen floor so I didn't run him often. I guess that's why he remained in such great shape. I have the large Trendmasters robot and Jupiter 2 as well. Hang on to those. They go for big bucks now! I bought two of each at the time and I'm glad I did. I hope you get the tin robot.
Hahaha. Golden boy is funny. I wish I could by ur collection so I can display it under glass with my 37 years of collecting. From the sledgemaster 3 times making professional powerlifting history in 2022
I started collecting 37 years ago, because there a lot of stuff I didn't have growing up., that why I started my huge collection. From the sledgemaster
I too have all four. They are truely all amazing. Still in the box. The Golden Boy was only available from Newbury Comics so yes it is very very rare. I got a Remco but had to buy one from eBay, it's not as prisitine as yours although it's in my top 5 toys I have in my collection. :)
Ah thank you! I'd forgotten where I got the Golden Boy version. Yes he is extremely rare! I'm glad I got him when I did. I agree, the Remco is a treasure! I'd love to have one of the ones they used in the "Mechanical Men" episode.
I have the Remco one with blue torso and tread section with red arms and legs. I think it would have been much better if they had forgone the voice track for the retro one and had put in a motor in the tread section for it to roll around instead. Also the claws should have either been silver or clear.
So good that you have one of the Remco robots. They are getting harder to find. I agree that the claws on the newer version should have been clear. A motorized tread section would have been nice.
@@outsider238 I know, I definitely want one when I'm able. I played with the one I had so much there was nothing left.LOL. I do have the 2' remote robot( Trendlines??) new in box. I took it out only 4 times.
Thanks for the wonderful video. The incongruity between the scaling of the Diamond Select B9s from the waist up and from the waist down kind of bugs me. I get your point about the torso being bigger to accommodate the electronics, but they could have made the legs/tread section to a scale that is more agreeable with the top part but they chose not to do so. The discrepancy gives the robot a rather whimsical or cute look, and maybe that's what they were going for. But I have to say the most impressive aspect of this presentation is your original Remco B9. It is in amazing condition. Good on you for maintaining it so well after so many years! The convention photos are priceless. Heartening to hear that Mark Goddard is such a nice guy.
Hi Nathan! Thank you! Yes, I totally agree about the proportions of the legs and torso. When I first saw these, it really bugged me too. I guess it still does but I've gotten more used to it over the years. These guys sit on my computer desk. Since they used the molds from the Trendmasters robots and modified the scaling of the torso without any problem, I don't know why they couldn't do the same with everything else. I'm sure it had everything to do with cost. But I still love these guys and I really like that Diamond Select made different ones. I think the Golden Boy version is actually more rare than the Anti Matter one now that I've looked on ebay at the current prices. I'm just happy that LIS robots are still being made in some shape or form. Yes, I truly did take care of my Remco robot! That year, Christmas was so happy for me when I opened that present and saw that my parents got him for me. We saw them at Woolco and I wanted one so bad. I remember my dad said that it was a bit of an expense for him and that I'd better take care of him and that sunk in as I knew we were kind of poor back then. Growing up that way, we learned to take care of what we had. I remember I slept with him like a teddy bear! Haha! Yes those conventions are a lot of fun. I've been very lucky to have met the people that I have at those things and having those experiences that I never dreamed would ever happen. Mark truly is a good, down to Earth person. He makes you feel totally comfortable around him. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@outsider238 I have never actually seen one of those Remcos in person. When I was a kid I never saw them in any store I was in. Seeing yours here I am struck by how large they were. They are in a class by themselves of course, having guest starred on those LIS installments. There was also one that popped up on a store shelf in a Brady Bunch episode. And I could have sworn I remembered seeing one in the Brady boys' bedroom, but I now think I may have imagined that. Really though, in this video yours appears to be in mint condition. You must have been a very conscientious kid. Your revelation that you slept with it made me laugh, but I can totally understand. The Lost In Space robot was a robot among robots. So unique and stands apart as one of the most enduring icons of that period in our lives.
@@Nathan-jq1uw Yes they are pretty big compared to most toys of him. Mine was the standard color but there were several other variants as I recall. I never let him bump into anything when I drove him around and I didn't run him outside. I didn't want him getting dinged up. We had a small kitchen which was the only place in the house that had a hard floor so I didn't really drive him around all that often which probably saved the motor. I did have to replace the rubber washer that goes around his bottom steering wheel though. It had dried out over the years. I totally remember the robot in a Brady Bunch episode! I was shocked that they used it considering those two shows were from different studios. I agree with what you said about the robot. I mean Robby is very iconic too and I think he's pretty cool also but the LIS robot was the friend we all wanted when we were kids.
@@saltaeb99 I saw your Tybo the talking carrot video! I don't know why the link didn't stay up but that was fantastic footage! Marta Kristen was so wonderful to play along! Thank you for sharing that! 😁
The Anti-matter one's arms are wrong. Both arms should be white. In the episode you can see one claw and arm cap is black. The other claw is kept out of view, but I think it's safe to say that would also be black.
My friend, you Certainly DID take GOOD CARE of your "REMCO" Robot from 1966. Mine lasted about 2 years. You have a 60 year old Robot on your hands my friend! How did you do that? Jeff
Hahaha! He was my favorite toy back then and I cherished him. I loved the Robot so much on the show and that was the only toy of it at the time. We didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid and I know it took a lot for my parents to get that for me.
@@outsider238 I'm really glad for you, AND seeing it again after all these years was quite a JOLT for me. I actually remember squeezing those two levers on his back side to make his arms spread apart... And, I was constantly unscrewing his head to remove the flashlight blub from behind his chestplate! Thanks for the memories! Jeff
@user-ki2cl9xe8z I remember the bubble had a distinctive smell to it because of the plastic they used for it. I did have to replace the rubber O ring on the directional wheel on the bottom as it rotted away from age. I'm glad I could spark a good memory for you! 😁
I got the normal one I almost threw it out because I thought the electronic stuff inside was destroyed, I put a few batteries and it looked like it wanted to work but couldn't...I think because I twisted the waist maybe I damage it... Seeing this video I put new batteries and it worked. I still think mine acts a bit twitchy because of the waist twist but knock on wood. It still works 😊 👍 I really like to snag that golden boy version 👌. Robot maybe a bit dated but still has more style that any Droid or fancy robot or Android. Or cyclon.
Well I just looked on ebay and those Anti Matter robots are going for around $100! It looks like the Golden Boy version might even be more rare than I thought. There was only one available on ebay and it was going for much more. I had no idea. I'm not sure why Diamond Select stopped making them. Maybe they weren't big sellers but now they've become collector's items. The gray and the Retro one show up on Entertainment Earth's website whenever they get them back in stock but I think the Retro one may become discontinued possibly soon.
Sorry for the late reply. It's getting difficult to keep up. Yes, the other ones are getting more and more difficult to find without paying a premium price. Seems like the Golden Boy is particularly hard to get. Must have been a very limited run on those.
@@maxallison867 Oops! I guess I did reply to your original comment. Sorry about that. I get a lot of comments on all my videos and it gets difficult to keep up the more videos I make.
Ah! Good job! That one isn't easy to find but I have seen it pop up here and there. Apparently, all the different versions continue to sell well so I'm glad Diamond Select is continuing to make them!
I have the Trendmasters version but then came across these.i got golden boy and now the red and blue version. I want to get the antimatter version next followed by the grey version
The Anti Matter version is a bit difficult to find. The gray one is common and I think Amazon has them. If you don't already have it, there's a smaller Trendmasters one as well.
@@Teletran35 Yeah the anti matter version had a very short run. Hopefully they'll bring those back so more people can get them and they won't be so expensive!
The original star trek needed a robot and spock and a different kinda of robot would be great together driving bones and captain kinda crazy. From the sledgemaster
I just realized another thing that angers me about the retro version. Look at the tread section area of the other 3. Theirs have the same color above the section to what I'll call the ''ankles'', but instead of the retro version having its ankles blue they made it red. The Remco version which is the inspiration for the retro has that part the same color of the tread section below it. I'd paint that area if I knew the exact shade of blue to buy.
@louisborselio8608 I don't remember if I kept the box. I had to do some major purging of boxes I've been keeping around for too long a couple of years ago. The one on the box was more than likely a prototype I'm guessing.
I bought the one on the far left, Diamond select, the silver one, when I seen how hugeeee the torso was, I put it back in the box and put in in the corner for a doorstop. With design technology today, I can't believe they didn't get the scale right on the torso vs the legs, I contacted the company, they said they had to make the torso big because of the electronics, I replied back, then why didn't you just make the scale of the legs match the torso, they never answered me on that one.
Yeah the scale difference between the torso and the legs is off-putting. They definitely should have upscaled the legs for sure. They were probably trying to save money and just use the original Trendmaster molds.
Another toy manufacturer called "Trendmasters" produced a range of B9 Robots back in 1998, and amongst them was a Chrome version, it was only 10 inches high (a little smaller than the Diamond Select range), so I think that is the one you are thinking about.
Thank you for the video, I always thought of LIS robot and Robby the robot as cousins. I bought the Robbie robot and iron Giant at Walmart I wonder how they would scale next to one of these?
Yeah they used the same leg molds as the Trendmasters robots. They widened the torso to accommodate the newer electronics but didn't widen the legs so it looks off.
@@sjbenson5618 To be honest, I haven't even looked. I've been so busy lately. Plus I'm so behind on other things I've wanted to watch that I haven't had time to get to as well. Even making these videos takes a lot of time. I spent 3 hours making this one. Even though it may not seem like it. Haha!
