Этот выбор был обусловлен как музыкальными вкусами Александра Стёпина, так и его представлениями о том, каким образом можно подать публике и судьям богатые возможности Дианы Анкудиновой. Возможности не только вокальные, но также эмоциональные и энергетические. Он это сделал в высшей степени успешно: эта кавер-версия стала одной из визитных карточек Дианы Анкудиновой; сам автор очень креативной аранжировки тоже оставил память о себе надолго. Слушая её, кто-то иногда вспомнит и об этом композиторе-аранжировщике, в один прекрасный момент ставшем соавтором незаурядной молодой артистки. Ещё этот американский папа очень хорошо высказался об умении Дианы Анкудиновой петь тихо, вполголоса (пиано, меццо пиано, меццо воче). Хочется высказаться ещё сильнее: само участие здесь Дианы Анкудиновой, со всеми её непривычными атрибутами - от голоса до внешности - выводит эту кавер-версию за границы традиционной, общепринятой популярной музыки...

Dad, Daughters, Diana Ankudinova was born on May 31, 2003, and was only 15 years old at the time of her performance of Wicked Game during a vocal competition that Diana took part in called “You Are Super”. This competition took place on May 12, 2019, and during this performance, some reactors were saying it sounded like Diana was using Auto-Tune during parts of this performance, or some other kind of electronic vocal Manipulation. The general consensus of many other reactors that are professional recording sound engineers, and actual vocal professionals, not just reactors, all say no. NO auto-tune was added or used, nor any other form of electronic voice manipulation. What many may not know is this, Diana Ankudinova has learned, mastered, and uses a vocal technique known as polyphonic singing. A singer that has mastered this singing technique can create an additional tone which adds to the harmonic overtones and can makes it sound an octave above and sometimes an octave and ½ above, which can sound like more than one voice singing. This is a testament to the time, Diana's talent, dedication she has put into her career at such a young age. This performance was her second appearance on the “You Are Super”, vocal competition. The 2019 season of the show was called a super-season and consisted mostly of winners and finalists from previous seasons. As the 2018 “You Are Super” winner, Diana Ankudinova was invited back, and also won the 2019 super-season. As an aside, in 2017 when Diana was 13, her vocal range was first measured from a low of D3 (lower alto range) to a high of A5 (upper alto range), which was unusually low for a 13 year old girl. Diana did not have her vocal range measured again until she was 18 years old on September 25, 2021 during her “ShowMaskGoOn!” performance of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” where her vocal range was again measured and Diana’s functional vocal range in 2021 was measured from a low of C3 (male Tenor range) to a high of B♭5, (female Mezzo Soprano range). In 2018, when she first appeared on the “You Are Super” vocal competition Diana performed a Russian folk song called “Rechenka” in her native Russian language. It was during this 2018 performance of “Rechenka” that many voice professionals started paying very close attention to Diana Ankudinova because she was displaying such a low, round, rich, deep, resonant sound, with a tone and timbre in her voice that has a maturity, way beyond her years plus she was a stage animal, fearless on stage. Many true vocal professionals were saying Diana Ankudinova’s performance of “Rechenka” was displaying all the hallmarks of her becoming a true contralto voice type, plus her musicality and stage presence was well beyond the ability of the vast majority of 14 year old girls. From the beginning of Diana's Rechenka performance, watch her face, and in her body movements as she submerges herself into this character. It was no surprise when Diana was declared the 2018 “You Are Super” winner, but no one was prepared for the following year in 2019 for the sound she exhibited during her performance of “Wicked Game” that won her the 2019 “You Are Super” competition! 5:30 She's a contralto, but the thing that makes her unique is her expanded pharynx and the way she can manipulate it. It's what gives her that insane timbre (also called color), which is more similar to that of a male baritone or even bass. It gets most prominent when she's singing in high chest voice. It sometimes makes it a bit hard to keep track of what octave she's on. Her ability to manipulate her timbre is probably best demonstrated in her performance of "Oy to ne vecher" (Oh it is not evening yet), where in the third verse she goes an octave higher but it *feels* like she is going an octave lower.

To truly determine her type of voice she'd have to be classically trained and sing that repertoire, there's no other way to know for sure. She could be a contralto judging by the quality of her tone and low notes but she can also be an unusual deep mezzo, we'll never know, she doesn't like opera and doesn't want anything to do with it :-))
