When she performed this song that evening, it was slightly unknown. Only her devoted fans knew this song. At the beginning of the song, the AMA audience was sitting their like zombies. But by the time she finished the first verse, she had them like a fish on a line. That's Miss. Ross for ya!!! She had them swept away. And the fans in the stand added to the pandemonium. They came for a show and they got one. Long live the Queen of Motown!!!!
@@I-AM-BELIEVER not sure what the hell you're talking about. My post clearly stated that the album was not a commercial success...and I added "unfairly", which is clearly my opinion. So your response was unnecessary.
@@Johnnyiswhere Unfairly? How though. No one bought it. Not like they didn’t promote it or allow her to do a campaign tour for the album. People weren’t checking for her like that anymore.
i’m obsessed with this performance, the hair, the dress design, the metalic nails on the second wardrobe, just ROSS. and the names of the icons?? the whole lineup was legendary. wow.
Gosh MJ, Whitney, Prince, George Michael, Elizabeth Taylor. They were all in the front row. Amazing Line-up. I've seen this taping a million times haha Miss Ross was on Fire throughout the show. At one point she changed to a mini-skirt and some of the audience were blowing whistles. so sexy. Plus Michael wrote the song, I always wondered if he was mouthing along to the words haha
Haha ,@@tunde818 you nailed it! That miniskirt was totally from a different show. And you're absolutely right, MJ joins and sings on the killer studio track! 😉🎤
@@migrain45 if she was a person who genuinely spread love, there'd be no Dream girl biography. Am I right? Yes I am. You need to stop spreading b.s. to defend the witch.

This is a very hard song to sing live! The rapid fire vocals in the chorus and verse would make most singers breathless. She did good! Very impressed, Diana!! 💜
EATEN ALIVE Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Michael Jackson (1985) undated 1985 stereo 3:50, lead vocal Diana Ross A side, September 1985; Eaten Alive, 1985 stereo 3:48, lead vocal Diana Ross B side, September 1985 What happened here is that Diana Ross’s friend Michael Jackson listened to the demos, and decided that ‘Eaten Alive’ needed something else in it. Barry offered to share credit with Michael if he wanted to supply what was missing. Michael took away a cassette of the demo and sent a tape back a few days later. Maurice later described this new demo as Michael singing and playing keyboard with a drum machine. The second copyright registration, June 1, bears the note ‘words and music in the choruses have been completely rewritten’. producer: Barry Gibb, Karl Richardson, Albhy Galuten; Michael Jackson (‘Eaten Alive’) around July 1985, Bill Schnee’s Studio, Los Angeles
Man, when they introduced who would still show up in this edition of the AMA's and we look at the cast of recent AMA's I almost cried. Today it should be called American "no music" Awards.
Diana Ross ruled the 60's, dominated the 70's, owned the 80s, slayed the 90's and is enjoying her hits and awards in the 00's and she continues to sell out show after show. This Lady is unstoppable! *DIANA ROSS FOREVER*!!
its not even about the song...its about the artist & music during this time...she is singing live and she is on the stage all by herself....none of this bullshit lip syncing and the artist is surrounded by 50 backup dancers all tripping overthemselves to distract the viewer from the fact that they are lip syncing....
She wants to be a queen and we all THOUGHT that she was a queen but after so much of her nasty evil behavior has been confirmed over the years, she'll forever be known as the Wicked Witch of Motown.
I wish the backing track was played a little louder, maybe her vocals mixed in a little better. For a live performance she sounds great, just very "live". I can't believe the guest list for that show. If you loved 80's music, all your favorites were going to appear!
Why is Michael Jackson voice left out??? But DAMN they had an exciting list! Michael, Janet, New Edition, Sheila E, Wham, Debarge, Apollonia, Aerosmith, the list goes on! I know there was a lot of talk about this the next day in 4th grade!
MJ voice was a part of the background voices for the recorded version of the song. There was also the voice of Barry Bibb who wrote the song. In live performances we listen the voice of the lead singing voice, in this case Diana Ross. This is a song recorded by Diana Ross, not a duet with MJ.
MissTia777 you wanna know why Michael Jackson's voice is left out , Diana Ross is a live performer it's because she is not lip syncing she's singing live that's why micheal's is not there. It's called live singing
I had an "aha" moment watching this. A revival of this song would have been great for the shows "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story" where characters really were being eaten alive.
Wow those were the days when the Award Shows were everything and all of the Stars came out and shared the stage..🙂 oh and Ms. Diana Ross looked Great...
Ross as usual looks amazing, sung live and turn the stage out. As far as the song lyrics a lot of songs back in the 80s were being produced for movie sound tracks. As this one was. So, she got paid big time and it didn't need to be a commercial hit. lol Think people!
I agree. However, the idea of the video comes from the films "Island of Lost Souls", 1932 and "The Island of Dr. Moreau", 1977. Both films are based on the book "The Island of Dr Moreau" by H. G. Wells, 1896. I still like the song btw and even bought the single when it came out back in 1986.
This was PURELY ‘80s pop and I loved it. Anyone else notice that most of the artists featured to appear on this show are either dead or phased out of today’s music biz? How crazy is that? I think Madonna’s the only one that survived the ‘80s❗️
True star beauty. There's no other artist , know matter how well their vocals are, that could out shine The Boss! This woman has influenced men and woman. Check her out 2021 still beautiful and stunning at the same time. A total full package. Congratulation's Miss Ross on 60 years of grand entertainment. A class act that just cannot be duplicated! I still want to be her. But, i am glad that she's who she's is! Much ❤ . B.T. W. I only had one issue with you and that was M.J. it took me a long time and understand why you couldn't return M.J. love. See i know.that you wouldv'e taken care and guided him well, to the point that he would still be with us today. Thank you, for putting that forever, sparkle in his eyes. Much ❤ and continued success!1
its a great song but something in the studio version didn't transfer properly to the live performance; you know some of you are right, MJJ part was totally taken out. Who knows why. I think if she put more stage movement & gestures in her performance to respond to the energy of the song it may would've helped. The audience didn't respond much because at the time it was a new song and it just made the top 10 on the R&B charts but hadn't been promoted on pop radio just yet
Maybe its because MJ's vocals were recorded together with Diana's on the same track ... I think quite common if the singer is perceived as important collaborator to record the vocals together with the lead singer .. you see, MJ is no mere backing vocal ..
I actually prefer this over the studio version what do u expect this is clear Diana with all the hand gestures and big hair. I thought she did fine. I always thought Micheal overshadowed Diana on her own song that's why I'm glad she did it solo for this performance
the audience was so dead that night, they didn't understand the heavenly sounds they were hearing, ik they didn't know the song back then like one comment mentioned but i fell in love the first few seconds i heard
That's right Ms Donna Summer. Real artists with real music. And just a curious question before I go: did yo mama not like it, when she found out? That her girl was out on the streets at night (walking)? Picking up all kinds of strangers ( if the price it right)?
I still have this show recorded on VHS. This is a great song, written by The Bee Gees and the greatest entertainer that ever lived Michael Jackson. Does anybody know the name of the dancer in the blue?
I REMEMBER THIS PERFORMANCE. MY TELEVISION BLEW OUT. AND I RUSHED OUT TO FRED P. GATTAS. HERE IN MEMPHIS TN. AND THEY HOOKED ME UP. WITH A NICE. LITTLE COLOR TELEVISION..I GOT HOME JUST AS THE SHOW WAS COMING ON. I WAS ELATED TO SEE THE BOSS. MY FAVORITE. MAN......... WOW !!!!
80's ART.....true craftsmanship, blows all shit away we see nowadays....after the 80s it was over, no more art, no more avantgarde, we lived it 1000%, new times are total pisstimes.
Twas a rare time where the transition outshined the origin and the end result. I’m a baby comparatively and when I heard Diana Ross’s mid to late 80’s albums for the first time I was confused how in the world this style didn’t survive the 2000’s
I echo the sentiments of the comment section ... Song really went unnoticed, btw I always loved the wardrobe changes during the performances... and that Lineup !!!! I can say I literally know every artist named, however today’s “artists” not so much, well none at all.
I read an interview with a member of the rock group "Journey" he said all the guys had a crush on Diana. He said she didn't sing she "coo" like Marilyn Monroe.
Because, in theory, it should have been a big hit. It was basically her version of MJ's Thriller...which is a HORRIBLY cheesy song, but we love it because it was MJ at the height of his powers. The song had the Gibb brothers and MJ behind it, it just didn't work for her.
If you look at timeline 6:24, you will notice the dancer in the pink on the right, is giving her a clap signal to move away. Diana Ross really is not a dancer per say. She can move, but choregraphed stuff is not her forte and she needed to be especially watched/hand-held during a performance like this. I really do believe the dancer in pink is giving her a signal. Look at it carefully. But l love this performance. As a child, l screamed she did her new song on the AMA's and she was dancing.
+whatigot2say IT WASN'T WINTER GARB...IDIOT...IT WAS MORE OF A LEATHER AND SUEDE STREET, OR JUNGLE SET...DON'T YOU SEE THE NAIL LIKE CLAWS ON HER GLOVES THAT PORTRAYS A LEOPARD OR A LION YOU IDIOT!!!!! LEARN SOME STYLE WITH YOUR POOR ASS SELF...
I have watched thjs video so many times, and I finally noticed it. Ithink she was trying to give her a signal too, or maybe she was just doing the claws like you're being "Esten Alive." I guess we will never know.
All the dancers do a clap at 6:24, it is part of the choreography, no dancer would dare attempt to distract the Diva of all Diva's during her performance, which was FABULOUS!
