Yes. Above all else she should have thought of her children who would grow up to see how ugly their parents were to each other. Everyone involved behaved badly at some stage. She needs to take responsibility for that too, instead of manipulating the media to make herself out to be this fragile victim. I understand she was manipulated herself by Basheer, but it was a terrible mistake she herself regretted eventually. Unfortunately her son has the same petty, vindictive and impulsive streak she did, and look how it’s turned out for him. Only now does he possibly see what a mess he’s made of his life.

Emotionally depressed egoistic family. Queen Elisabeth didn't care about people. Just her reputation. Wearing stolen treasures from colonies. Is far worse than exposing truth. Elisabeth is the mentally manipulating Diana. Her partner is a nazi sympathizer with blood relatives married to nazi leaders.

No disrespect and it’s just my opinion but I felt Claire Foy and Olivia Colman were both better suited for the role of Queen and their voices were probably the biggest reason. We all interpret things differently of course. I found myself losing interest in this series slowly but surely starting with Season 5. Too many actor changes. Again, I understand the reasons for it and I absolutely loved this show for a long time. Very well done overall.

@@Gagalover1569 I'm not sure how old you are or what kind of movies you're into, but the fact that Imelda Staunton was an amazing choice for one of the most hated Harry Potter characters is a huge hurdle for me. @@brianmurray7980 I’m 55. I wasn’t familiar with Imelda Staunton prior to The Crown. I just said on another post from this series that I really need to start from the beginning now that I know what to expect and just try to focus on the storyline, paying less attention to the actors. Not sure if I can do it but it may be a good winter challenge. I just started watching Peaky Blinders and it seems promising. When super model Stella Tenant committed suicide I had no idea that she came from an aristocratic family. Her grandmother was Deborah Mitford. Just in the last year or so I discovered documentaries on The Mitford Sisters and have been caught up in that. I’m not a huge movie buff per se, but when I’m drawn into something I tend to go hard trying to learn everything about that person or that history or whatever that something maybe. At 55 I’m really enjoying history. I’ve always loved Queen Elizabeth the 2nd and I was 12 years old when Charles and Diana married. I also want to go back and watch more of the classic movies and read more classic books. I am finding it harder to stay focused when reading though. Thank goodness there are more and more docuseries and documentaries and movies based on history and true stories coming out. Audiobooks too! RU-vid is great for all of that. Peaky Blinders has released the first 3 episodes so far (just recently too). So much to learn! I’m not sure how much of this series is factual /fictional. Diana Mitford is a character who appears in 3 episodes I think.

I've always got the impression the queen tried to defend and help diana, but she was simply from a generation that doesn't do that huggy and everything is going to be okay type support. The queen simply didn't know how to help her, kinda feel sorry for both of them. An example of this is when Charles says when he needs cheering up he calls his mistress. The queen scolded him for it and told him to be more supportive of his wife

@MTknitter22 I have to disagree. She had to find a balance between being a good mother and being the queen. Charles and Anne are two that she did not understand. They are very different in terms of personalities. She had good mothering instincts, however because she was a mother figure to Lady Sarah. That all being said, I think she thought that if you are married to an officer, you are doing something good. It is pretty much all she has known. Diana was on another level altogether. She (diana) had people working against her: Camilla, the press, Princess Anne, The Queen Mom, Princess Margaret, her brother, her mother and her grandmother. That is a lot and I am sure that because the Queen had this "bound by duty" attitude, she didn't know how to help Diana. I think that Diana was looking for a mother figure. She had a father figure in Prince Philip, but it wasn't enough for her.

The way I look at it, Diana had to learn what Harry needs to learn; when you are a member of the Royal Family you don’t belong to yourself but rather to the nation. There are a lot of benefits that come with being in the Royal Family but there are also sacrifices to be made. I feel that a lot of people will ask me if Diana was to live in misery and I will say no. But she had two choices: Either conform to the rules or get out. Same goes for Harry.

It was a bit different for Harry in that it was Meghan who did not want to confirm to the idea that the press had the right to mock her then unborn child by portraying him as a monkey with her having to simply take that gross insult in silence. For her there was no choice but to get out of a system that would allow such blatant disregard of her child but Harry was understandably torn. He loved his blood family, quirks and all, but he had a wife and children to protect and defend when no one else in the family seemingly would. Like Diana, Harry spoke and wrote his truth and it hurt many he loved but it was his experience so I respect him for sharing it. Reconciliation seems impossible but I'm hopeful that time will heal the wounds on both sides, at least for the sake of the children who shouldn't be punished for adults behaving badly.

Someone who is out of touch with the common Briton, especially in the latter half of her reign. Someone who strives for quiet and tranquility yet unwilling to resolve the issues that create turmoil & chaos. Also, as this fictional show does NOT explain, Prince Charles tried during the early years of his marriage to get Diana all the help she needed. He hired therapist after therapist, but Diana ultimately refused treatment. That isn't entirely her fault: from personal experience I know that therapy for mental illness is Very, VERY hard and difficult to do. But if you refuse it, you refuse the treatment. Diana also refused psychiatric medicine because of the stupid false stereotype that psychiatric meds implies that you're "doing drugs". We can see where she's coming from, but, for this woman to EVER have implied that no one tried to help her is BEYOND a lie. She could just never, ever accept that anything, anything was partially her fault.

He was severely gaslighting her in their marriage and all those supposed therapists were to reinforce that. Ending his extra-marital affair and not being a spoiled brat who resented his wife for being popular would have been a far more genuine and fruitful attempt to help. I understand Charles has spent the past years putting considerable effort and money into his false victimhood PR - but I CANNOT understand people actually buying that about ‘Prince’ “do you seriously expect me to be the first Prince of Wales in history not to have a mistress?”. We also have video evidence of how much he has publicly humiliated Diana such as their engagement interview or that time he ‘joked’ about having two wives. Pathetic.

I loved Diana like everyone else at the time, but in hindsight, it was clear she had massive mental health problems, was headstrong and would do anything to get her own way, including shooting herself in the foot. While she may have won the battle of public opinion at the time, her cooperating with Andrew Morton with his book and then the BBC interview, she was the author of her own demise which lead to her divorce and ultimate death. And as a result, she left her two boys without a mother and Camilla as Queen of England. What a horrific, needless tragedy.

I still remember when asked if they were in love, Diana answered “of course”and Charles said “whatever loves means”. How many times did she over look it since she wanted him demanded him threw a tantrum to marry him until everyone gave in. she always seemed to forget no one wanted her to marry Phillip because of the STRONG ties his family had with the Nazis as in he met the head crazy many times close. she was a great queen but like all people made a sh*t ton of mistakes. the problem was her word was law in her family if she said no you can't get married they couldn't so she broke up couples many times and then was shocked at the outcome and how they behaved like she didn't have an ounce of guilt for it when she held her breath to marry the man she wanted but couldn't allow others to do the same.

This is the backbone of the English Monarchy ( well, it was anyway ) . Queen Elizabeth II as did Queen Elizabeth I devoted her entire life to the crown and its people. Princess Diana was not the same , she was of an entirely different era. She gave her love freely and was always compassionate to everyone, but when it wasn't returned in kind , well we all know what happened. Prince Charles and yes I still say Prince ( he will never be a King ) was a spoiled little dandy . Just like his paedophile of a brother. This is the problem with the lower nobility and commoners; living the life of a royal IS NOT for amassing glory and or attention for yourselves. To be royal is a calling, to do 'The LORD's work' on Earth, and to preserve and perpetuate King David's bloodline as prophesied and promised. Royalty is not some tourist peculiarity but individuals called, chosen, and ordained in being 'anointed Servants of The LORD God.' Our Royal Person is grievously annoyed how much the common populace idol worship royal personages including those who have passed away. It is not wrong to hero-worship honourable people but to idol worship is High Treason against The Creator. STOP idol worshipping! And STOP being jealous or resentful towards wealthy people who live and or work in palaces. We all have tasks to fulfill on this Earth. We are not all equal so cease this fraudulent American way of thinking and political warfare in trying to force everyone to be alike or equal. There will always be a separation of classes because human society was structured to exist only under monarchial governance as it is in 'the Kingdom of Heaven.' People need to wake up and grow up. And furthermore, royalty should only marry royalty. Anything contrary to this only invites ongoing grief and strife no reasonable individual would ever want. God bless 'the Christian British Empire.'

There were two lengthy inquests: one in Paris and one in London. The family who was to blame for the deaths is the Fayed family. There should have been an escort vehicle. The chauffeur was proven to be drunk. The car was in poor condition. The only survivor was the bodyguard who was the only person wearing a seatbelt and should have insisted that everyone else wore theirs. The chauffeur was goading the paparazzi . . . the list goes on. The Royal family had no idea where Diana was, but thought she was on her way back to London to spend a couple of days with her sons before they returned to school. At the time of the accident, Charles had access and the boys were spending the summer at Balmoral as they did every August.

Queen Elizabeth did not want Diana to be happy. Queen Elizabeth wanted Diana to choose service and duty over happiness. That was instilled into Queen Elizabeth from the moment she was born. Unfortunately, that was not instilled into Princess Diana. I don't think either woman was wrong. I think both women came from different eras in their life. I am 61 years old and my era was to protect the family image at all cost. So I can relate to Queen Elizabeth. However, this generation as well as Diana's generation could care less about the protection and image of the family. I have since now come to believe that there has to be a balance . If that protection is causing you unbearable pain and suffering, revealing the truth is better than a lifetime of misery. I watched my sister spiral into drugs protecting the secrets of the family. Death became her only peace.

On the contrary. The Queen shafted Margaret by preventing her happy marriage to Peter Townsend, Equerry (Aide de Camp) to her father, while banishing him to a distant post never to see Margaret again. She drove Margaret to drink. Margaret was more beautiful and would have made a much better Queen being smart, saucy, pretty, and very charismatic as opposed to stodgy Elizabeth. More hypocrisy by Queenie when her daughter Anne, married the Equerry to Queen Elizabeth, Mark Phillips. The exact scenario again but this time Elizabeth did not prevent the marriage by threatening to cut off Anne from the royal family and funds if she married an Equerry. How's that for hypocrisy? Elizabeth was a terrible mother to Charles, who grew up very unhappy with little contact from his mother. She forced Charles to marry Diana who he did not love, and give up Camilla, who was the love of his life. This caused a huge rift between Diana and Charles. Diana divorced him, and was so desperately unhappy with royal servants spying on her and reporting back to Queenie, and being made to follow Charles around and not be free. This caused her to escape to other places and caused her demise. Charles ended up marrying Camilla after she was divorced from her husband. So now, Charles married a divorcee, but became king. How ironic because King Edward, Duke of Windsor had to abdicate when he married a divorcee. Isn't that bald faced hypocrisy by Queenie? Charles should be disqualified from being king since he married a divorcee too. Right? For all her disapproval of Diana, Queenie did not realize that her own star was dimmed by the brilliant light of Diana in the public relations dept. Diana was a supernova star on the world stage. Elizabeth paled by comparison. Diana could do more for the royal family than all the other members combined. She was never utilized for PR, given any respect, and made happy. So very stup*id of Queenie. Diana was never mentally unstable. She was a rock of endurance and tenacity. The Queen also was responsible for splitting up Fergie and Andrew who still love each other, and still live under one roof while being divorced on paper to suit the Queen. Andrew ended up a Pedo, and guess who brought him up? Yes, Your Queenie. Pedo son. But she forgave him and paraded him in visible royal public events. Hmmm. Finally, not having done enough mischief and damage to people's lives, Queenie managed to ruin her grandson's life with his new wife, Meghan. Harry was the spare, it mattered not one bit who he married. But nasty racist stuff about Meghan was published to the press by Charles, William, Camilla with Queenie's approval. This was a young couple starting out on their life, deeply in love, Meghan was a few years older and had the right mothering touch for Harry who lost his mum early in life. Meghan was a brilliant PR move for the royal family because she was non-White and this was a way to connect to all non-White people from previous colonies and empires. Meghan was the new Diana in fact. If Queenie had been smart and seen that, she would have used Meghan & Harry for all the tours in places like India, Africa, South America, etc. You had two sets of young royals: Will & Kate, Harry & Meg that would have injected life back into a dying institution that is more a habit than a need or desire. But again, Elizabeth showed poor judgement and banished them into exile, cutting off all funding and even security for their family. Absolutely damning move. A very politically damaging move too. Now you have Kate with cancer occupying William, and no Harry as backup, and Charles too old to do anything, with a wife everyone has not forgiven. See how badly this Queenie rules? Meghan is not a Narcissist. She is a self made, hard working woman who became a successful actress and has now snagged a top royal as her husband. She has made a lovely family, they support themselves with no parasitic living off British taxpayers. She has a loving relationship with her mother, Doria, and has cut off her half siblings and father who are frankly an embarrassment to themselves and trying to make money off her fame. Her sister, Samantha wrote a nasty book about Meghan for no reason at all. Did Meghan do anything to any of them? No. She kept to herself and she has a right to choose her friends. They have no right to defame her and Harry. Harry won his lawsuit against the British press, which proves they wrote lies. Anything else you want to be combative about? You are short on facts, and big on myths. Wake up and adjust to reality. The queen was a political disaster. She had no head for leadership or knowing who would be the best political allies in the royal family. She chased away three brilliant stars: Margaret, Diana, Meghan. She probably felt threatened by each of them. She tried to destroy them. Margaret died so conflicted. She loved her sister, but her sister tore up her romance. Diana died hounded by the press and made to look like the wandering wife, when in fact, it was Charles who was wandering into Camilla's garden. Meghan came with so much hope and wanting to please the royals, but she was humiliated, snubbed, and disrespected by them all till Harry had to leave to save his marriage. So, how smart is that for a political ruler whose only job is PR for the press? Elizabeth was a useless ruler and lousy leader.

@@mjremy2605 Margaret reached the age where she could marry Townsend without permission. I think you forget that back in the day divorce was a scandal, and Townsend was divorced. The rules were changed earlier this century when not only Margaret but three of the Queen's children divorced. Townsend was sent away for a couple of years until Margaret reached the age where she could make the decision without permission. He returned and they were talking about marriage. However, Margaret understood that she would have to give up her title and entitlements to marry a divorcee, and felt that her lifestyle was more important than Townsend. Margaret most certainly would not have made a better queen. She had no sense of duty and life was just one long party for her. She took a trip to America and was roundly criticised by the Americans for her lengthy partying sessions. The monarch needs to be as you described QEII - not a party girl who was frequently drunk and didn't get out of bed every day until midday. She had charities she had to work for, but didn't seem to be bothered. Anne could marry an Equerry because neither party was divorced. There's a difference. The objection wasn't the equerry. It was the divorced equerry. In the day, divorcees weren't acceptable in society.

I cant stand the stench of hypocrisy around Diana. She was "intimate" with a string of men during the period that Charles fell back in love with our current Queen. From the captain of the England rugby team, to London playboys, Harley Street Doctors, to an army officer called James Hewitt. Just Google James Hewitt, Prince Harry to confirm Harry's paternity, they are like peas in a pod which, I believe is why Harry behaves so badly towards his brother, Harry knows who his real father is. It's so, so easy to throw mud at the royals but when you consider that the Queen knew about Diana Spencer's hypocrisy, it's little wonder that her majesty was annoyed by Spencers simperring attempts to destroy the monarchy.

I find the "we're busy" defense to be BS. A senior member of your family's well being and success should be a priority that you would carve out time for. Instead of denying her request, an effort could have been made to reschedule. You make time for the things, the people, you care about.

BS..They were horrible to her, asking her to stay married while her husband the now king behaved like a trollop, she's suppose to look the other way, bollocks!

TMI here, but shortly after Diana was killed, I realized how unhappy I was in my own marriage and finally got divorced. Things can change in an instant, don’t waste a single moment being unhappy.

I lost all respect for Diana after her trashy tell all bio. She was still fully in the family ….taking advantage of the obscenely wealthy privilege the life afforded her, while whining endlessly about abuse. Such a child. Plenty of people in her position have formed separate independent lives and trudged on. Her tell all accomplished NOTHING.

If the queen had allowed Charles to marry Camilla in the first place then none of this would have happened

I think it’s amazing how much they were able to make Melania look like Princess Di here.
