🌟 Welcome to a journey through the captivating world of Diana Vreeland's iconic apartment!
Diana Vreeland, the visionary force behind Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, left an indelible mark on the fashion world.
Diana Vreeland transcended the realm of fashion editors. She was a whirlwind of eccentricity, a captivating personality who left an indelible mark on the fashion world and beyond.
Born Diana Dalziel, her life unfolded like a fantastical narrative. She moved between the chic environs of Paris and New York, rubbing shoulders with Coco Chanel and Andy Warhol. Vreeland's distinct vision propelled her through the ranks of fashion magazines. At Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, she wasn't just presenting fashion; she was orchestrating cultural moments. Her pages pulsed with a vibrancy that extended far beyond clothing, incorporating art, travel, and a touch of the avant-garde.
Vreeland wasn't merely interested in showcasing trends; she was a champion of individuality. Her booming pronouncements, delivered in a trademark rapid-fire staccato, emphasized the power of personal style. "Why look like everyone else?" she'd declare, urging readers to cultivate their own unique flair. Vreeland even coined the term "youthquake" in the 1960s, recognizing the burgeoning cultural shift towards youthful rebellion.
Beyond fashion, Vreeland's legacy extends to the realm of museums. After her departure from Vogue, she became a special consultant at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There, she curated a series of groundbreaking exhibitions that transformed the perception of fashion as a powerful social commentary.
Diana Vreeland was a force of nature, a woman who reveled in the extraordinary. Her flamboyant persona and unwavering belief in the transformative power of style continue to inspire artists, designers, and anyone who dares to embrace a life less ordinary.

I will never forget a knock at my door and opening it to find Diana Vreeland standing in front of me... Her deep voice saying "I am Diana Vreeland, from Vogue Magazine"... I would like to feature your work in Vogue.... and so it went and I had my work in two Vogue Editions. Yes, this woman was absolutely unforgettable! I am so happy to see this glimpse into her home.

I remember the days in the 60s when that month's Vogue would arrive in our mailbox. My mother and I would sit side-by-side on the living room sofa, marveling at page upon page of Vreeland's bold creativity. Her fearless approach to design and collecting was such an inspiration to so many of us in those days. And we never worried about dust! The point was a sui generis personal style that reflected our life journey and surprised and delighted our visitors.

I was in that apartment many times, having dinner with Mrs. Vreeland. She was terrific. That first image of the apartment -- I'm not sure that is in her place, actually. It was not a large apartment, and the rooms pictured in that first photograph are neither her living room nor the dining room. I don't recognize it. And no, the place never smelled of cigarette smoke!

I read that Diana Vreeland was grossly underpaid for what she did for Vogue. By comparison, Anna Wintour is very well paid. Someone said she had nothing of real value. That is probably why Diana was so innovative in using such vibrant color and over-the-top decor.

Some of the rooms, especially the very busy red ones, reminded me of some of Lee Radziwill's interior décor. The floor-to-ceiling printed fabric on walls and then upholstering the furniture must have been something that appealed specifically to the elites of the 1960s. The profusion of prints, more-is-more, was of a particular _zeitgeist_ that no longer exists.

That more is more is more is a response to being able to comfortably travel the world. This was the birth of globalization, and people who could afford it liked to show that they'd been everywhere. That works really well with a super maximalist style. My grandparents were diplomats and had a WASP-ier more subdued take on that style. They didn't go in for pattern as much as rich colors, but it was zillions of books in every room, and art and foreign objects for days. I personally LOVE this kind of maximalism, but it's a tough look to pull off authentically because you have to be very cultured, very interesting, and really able to edit to get it to work.
@mon_avis2978
@mon_avis2978 5 месяцев назад
@@Bunny-ch2ul Thanks for your thoughtful reply, esp. that the seeds of globalism are suggested by that décor. I agree wholeheartedly about recreating that _luxe_ and cultured ambience and understand wanting to live and be in it.

She was the pivotal figure who translated (especially Parisian) High Fashion to the rich American buyers, from one side, and on the other showed it to the masses during the Golden Age of both HC and RTW. She defined our cultural History doing it, this is why she's a Historic figure herself. Comparing her to Anna Wintour, because of their job, it is like comparing Basquiat to an English Lady Fishmonger working after the disasters of Brexit.

I love these short pieces showing the interiors of famous apartments and homes and the different styles and tastes in lifestyles and furnishings, remembering all the while that these are homes that people come home to, go to sleep and wake up in and carry on with their personal lives. All are gorgeous and unique but some look rather difficult to relax in - where do you flop? Is that couch comfortable to take a nap on? Where can I relax and just do nothing, play a game of cards or a boardgame, read a book or a magazine or watch a movie or TV? Some of these interiors must need dusting and polishing at least once a day to maintain the lush appearance. Just wondering...........
