the school uniform is meant to make all kids feel equal at school no matter their background rich, mid class or poor all are equal at school. also kids in uniform who commute daily get the benefit of reduced public transport price to n from school from what i've seen. so i think its cool☺️
Well done Martin - I know Diani beach very well , your account was very real World for a Mzungu visiter. Its a lovely area (Beach front) all the way along, but the main strip has many of the locals called "Beach Boys" all just trying to make a buck and live to feed themselves and families - however as a Tourist you are constantly stopped so you pointed that out well as after a while its defo difficult to just chill so just be prepared and firmly polite as you cannot help everyone. But for sure the Hospitality and service and charm in the Hotels is lovely. Further up around Lantana (which is amazing to stay) you get left alone . Many thanks for the video.
That guy u gave the T-shirt to.. was lying to u. took it to himself or sold it. anyway nice Vid Martin! im arriving Diani on september.. super stoked about it!
Next time visit my cousin's resort in Diani - Mzima Beach. I've been watching your videos and they're very entertaining. I'm from Kenya, but I live in the UK.
15:34 oh wow what are the odds. I stayed there also. Although it confuses me how you couldnt find the beach its practically right across the road lmao. I stayed in the monkey suite on the ground floor. And i remember the small dog outside the reception area all day. I didn't know you could get up on the roof like that @ 15:45
My point was, not all roads toward the beach end there. But it is indeed not too hard to find. I thought it was fairly good value for money. But I don't know how it compares to others. Did you find better VFM around?
Diani is my favourite place on this earth and been there multiple times and i must say there are 2 things that makes me super angry and annoying every time… the high prices they put for mzungus and the annoying beach boys… like i am asked literally every day from the same beach boys to buy this or that.
So the best way is to walk with some local who you know and trust. Because he will discuss the price 🤣 But when i am alone and they said some high price (lets say for the transport) i simple say that i go to my other driver who offers me much cheaper price for the same service or i tell them i rather walk then. 😅 It often helps
Very negative view of Diani I think! I do live here and for me it's just paradise.. The spots you show are far from the lovely places!! And the few people asking for money aren't the casual people!! The normal people leave you alone, so please don't think you seen or meet the average Kenyan! As the are just super sweet people here :)
If u had a bad experience doesn't mean it's for everyone coz clearly it was not a must u speak to everyone so don't tarnish our paradise clearly u see many foreigners and most have settled here
@@MartinHervy You did a bad research exercise, on purpose, so you could skew the results just to make a video for views. You can basically make any place look terrible or pleasant just by showing the things you want. I live in the Netherlands, I could make a video showing how wonderful it is here, or I could make a video showing how terrible it is here. You might fool unintelligent people all the time, but you can't fool me, none of the times.
and how is it in France....not everyone wears Dior clothes, not everyone skis in Val Thorens and not everyone eats in elite restaurants...let's be honest that France isn't all flash but has a little bit of everything and yes Regarding the fact that there is no social security, Kenyans somehow have to survive.....and they know it very well.....and Diani is great
I think you haven't been to France recently. Nowadays, everyone wears Dior. The other day someone was wearing Chanel, he got put in prison right away. True story.
@@MartinHervy I was in France recently, but I only went to watch the match with Wanbanyama, and I lived in Kenya - on Diani for almost 7 years......and Dior was just for example....have a nice day
The same happened to me in Diani but I didn’t even opened the door only the very high window in the bathroom and i end up having the biggest monkey i ever saw in my life in my kitchen, stealing my fruits… it scared the shit out of me
You are paying muzungu prices for everything, mon ami. Africa is all about negotiation. You are expected to bargain for everything. If you don't, you will be overcharged. And it's better to haggle and agree the price before you commit to a service. If you leave it to the end, you are bound to pay whatever the locals think you can afford. One of the problems of venturing onto Diani Beach is that you will get pestered to buy stuff all the time if you are a muzungu and it can wear very thin after a short time. That's why I generally hang around the hotel pool where they can't hassle you. I wonder if Katy gives more than a facial massage.
@@MartinHervy The same applies in Asia - except Singapore and especially Japan where prices are fixed. Everywhere else, haggle. In Africa if you are a muzungu the locals can *smell* if you are a newbie = unfamiliar with Africa and local prices and you don't know how to haggle. Taxi drivers, store keepers and the like will casually enquire of you "First time in Kenya/Africa?" And if you say yes, inwardly they will be rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of ripping you off (overcharging you). It is better not to ask the price of anything because that shows the locals you don't know local prices. If it's your first time in the country and you need a haircut, massage, taxi or whatever then ask the reception at your hotel what the LOCALS would pay, NOT tourist prices, and then offer/give that price. Or, if the locals offer a price then counter-offer with 50%, show complete disinterest in the item and slowly walk away repeating "That's too much/it's more than I want to pay." If they call you back it means there is further room for negotiation. This is a GAME for the locals with muzungus in many parts of the world so just accept that almost everyone will play this game with you and try to rip you off. You can even learn to enjoy the game and outwit them. Think of it like a game of mental chess: your wits against theirs. PS You obviously didn't stick around long enough to find out if Katy offered more than a facial massage. Looks like she's pretty good at that :)
10:09 of the video!!! Did you really call them "BOYS"? Grown up men? Using the expression "GUYS" would be appropriate, using the expression "RAFIKIS", means friend, would be respectfull! But using a word that the colonial Masters used for their servants, the Americans for their slaves, is not OK at all. Try tzo show some Respect!
I call my friends Boys. And I respect them. But if you want to keep colonialism and slavery alive, then by all means, you're doing exactly what is needed 👍🏻
@@MartinHervy I also call "my friends" "Boys"! But some random strangers, adults, on the street? Political correctness, respect and the appropriate use of words are mandatory for every interaction when travelling!
Im new here, Been watching your videos for the past 2 weeks. That $27 (3,500) facial was a total rip off, should be $10 max. I think you should be asking price before the service 👍🏿. Anyway great content, showing my country Kenya 🇰🇪 to the World.
Because most of the beachfront resorts are fallen into disuse or very run down. Including Nomad. In 17km there’s parking for about 20 cars so you can’t even drive there. Most of the beachfront properties are owned by wealthy Kenyans and have no roofs so they don’t have to pay tax. Then there’s the unreported crime!
I'm Kenyan and Nairobi hawkers are worse tbh. Everybody is selling ladies stuff and some even grab you just to get you to buy them. Especially if you're a lady walking alone.
Another nice slice of life in Kenya. I’m guessing the speeded-up part with the guys on the beach was because it took a while to disengage from them. Stay safe and as always, thank you.👍😎
Yes, the conversation was not very interesting, also I had more clips like that from the 10 min walk on the beach but that was enough for my point I think
@@MartinHervy it was ok. They brought us breakfast every morning. But the value made it good. They warn ⚠️ us to keep windows close because monkeys 🐒 would come and take food
Sweet God, she should get a criminal record for charging you $27 for that facial 😂😂 It was a brilliant video, very interesting to watch, I admire your patience when it comes to people approaching you for help. I have just booked the trip to Kenya for November and we will be staying at Diani Beach and I already know I will struggle with this.
Well as you've my struggle is with the bartering. I never should have paid that price 🤦🏻♂️ Yeah that part is a bit weird/heartbreaking sometimes. But firm no and keep walking and they won't insist if you want to be left alone. You'll have a great time, enjoy!!
Your ride with that Tuktuk is only $1.36 cents which is roughly 199.92 shillings. I am soo glad you went outside of your hotel to see the people some people just stay in their resorts until they get back on the airplane. If you were in Somalia we would probably kidnap you.😂😂😂😂 Peace from the peace full part of Somalia Somaliland.✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
I saw a post someone made visiting the beach that they noticed a lot of older "white men" with very young girls like 6-10 yrs old. I wonder did you run into that issue visiting this area?
I saw a lot (a lot) of very old men with young pretty girls, but adequate young. Didn't see that with kids. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist though unfortunately.
I was there and saw lots of Guka (Grandfather) Mzungus men and women. Sometimes a 60 yrs old white man or white woman with a 20 yrs old African but never a kid. It probably happens but not in the open. They would get lynched. Any old white men I seen with young girls, 6, 7 yrs old etc. The young girl was their daughter of them and their 20 Yr old wife. It's still morally wrong IMO although its not illegal.
You are seriously misinformed. Older white guys with young women, yes, same as old white women with young local beach boys. But childrren? Come off it. They would be lynched by the locals or put in jail if they were screwing around with children. If you saw a muzungu with a 6-10 year old girl it's the daughter of his local Kenyan wife. Duh!
Thanks for the info . No thanks Taking that off the itinerary, I get it that it is tough but I can't stand being bothered every 10 feet I just want to chill.
Keep in mind I gave money to the first that asked in the beach. If you just say "no thanks" and walk away, nobody will come after you. Everyone was really nice. But yeah, strange place.
12:35 try being a Type B personality. I have to go everywhere with my wife so she can say "No, No, No" in Swahili. The one time i left on my own she asked me to buy milk. I ended up buying weed and going on a snorkeling tour to see Zebra fish and came back with no milk. So heres my advice if you are going for a long walk exploring..... Wake up at the crack of dawn and do your long walk before the hustlers are awake. Then i sleep in the afternoon and get a tuk tuk to the restaurant or night club etc. In the evening / night.
I never felt unsafe! There is a lot of people in need and begging. It's something to be aware of. But I never had any issues whether I was willing to give or not.
@@MartinHervy Huh? no excuses to not watch then now... sorry man I dont understand what do you mean but hey, no offense. I think it was hillarious. I am here at Diani b. currently. Thanks and keep up the good work.
