Great content! I could only watch part of the show, watching from Dallas TX. I am an old retired electrical engineer who worked 50 years designing and building all types of facilities. I am pleased to see this brilliant young architect/engineer bringing forward the wonderful country. It really gives me hope about Africa at large. I see so many young people doing great things or at least pushing for change, so I expect large changes for the better will come within the not too distant future for much of Africa. Small positive changes can cause very large shifts in the social fabric. Tell your Dad, the shirt is cool, wish I had one lol.

Now that I’m getting in that stage of my life where I’m contemplating building my first house, I never thought to do it anywhere else but Salone. While one of my cousins do run a reputable construction company, it’s still something that I’m a bit hesitant to do because of all the wahala that can come with working with family. Great topic and every episode so far has been bangers

Another factor to consider is the prices and quotations from the professional architects. You pay 3 x of the professional fees in comparative to neighbouring countries.

I didn’t know that. Do you find overall professional services are higher in Sierra Leone than in the sub-region? Or just for architects? Why do you think that is? Not enough professionals?

My personal experience was with architects. The estimate we got to develop a 2 town plot property in Lagos with same plan was 60% more in SL than. So we ended up developing the Lagos property 1st. And seek local contractors to get the work done in SL.

This topic I find interesting. Vickie, I totally agree with your dad about local investors as well as disapora. Real Estate or Architect tend to charge exorbitant prices. Which can discourage people in the first place. So you don't have to think about cost before starting to build because even if you have budgeted for your dream project in Sierra Leone, the reality will be a different story. So just start with basic or whatever little you have, and the rest will unfold gradually. It might be a bitter or sweet experience.

Your Dad is so right. Most lawyers in SaLone do not do their due diligence. I was a victim of that too and to date I am yet to receive all my money back.

I forgot to inquire also, regarding title to land. Is land platted and recorded with a chain of titles to each parcel of land; that is, if a person from the diaspora (not me) wanted to buy land for a home or business, would there be a clear title to the land or how would that work? I have read of warnings about newcomers buying land then finding out the local chief did not approve of the sale or whatever. Just curious. One cannot really grow generational wealth in real estate with having real title to the property, nor can one use the land or buildings as capital collateral to leverage one's assets. For most of the developing world this is one of the major problems to raising the poor upward.
