He gets huge respect for his talent, otherwise he would never have been invited to this show. People and the industry only distanced from him because he was erratic and could not put the substances aside. I met Warren and Woody several times in the mid nineties and they both loved him but said he had become unbearable.
Where is he ‘under-rated’? It is just blues licks- nothing ground breaking. You know who is under-rated? Allan Holdsworth- a real ground breaker in the workd of guitar. How bout Shawn Lane? Lane had chunks of all other guitar players in his stool. But yeah, Dick was great.
Dickey Betts was my main inspiration for taking up the guitar seriously!!! I never got goose bumps before listening to any guitarists ........... until ...... I heard .......... Dickey ~Best~ Betts~!~ After 55 wonderful years, made much more wonderful thanks to Dickey Betts and the rest of the Allman Brothers Band......... it all seems like a mere months,, I can't thank Dickey Betts enough for in some ways saving my life, LITERALLY~!~ I hoped he'd always be with us forever~!~ His passing still hasn't sunk in yet with me, it will any day now. God Bless and keep Dickey in HIS memory~!~
Not many younger people realize what huge part of the Allman Brothers band Dickey Betts was, even when Duane was alive. And fewer know that Dickey kept Duane's sound alive for the band after Duane's death. God Bless Dickey Betts. A true guitar master, and legend of Rock & Roll.
I have the full Allman Brothers Fillmore East complete set of shows and listening to that unless Dwayne's playing slide you can't tell who's playing what I think sometimes it's such an awesome they played off each other and they hand each other skills
Around '73 or so, I had all the ABB albums to date but had never seen them play. I saw them late one night on either the Midnight Special or In Concert series. I was amazed at Dickey's presence.
Man, I just love these vids. This mid- late 80's period was a trove of gems. The ABB was not yet rejoined but met up periodically for college concerts , small venue shows, etc. Betts and Allman had solo careers. Betts always played with such melodic precision and the interplay with Johnny Neel it's just beautiful to watch
Later that year Dickie and Greg did a free show in a field in philly maybe 150 people there had to pinch myself watching them on this tiny stage RIP BROTHER
He wrote Blue Sky with such great lyrics! Don’t fly Mr Bluebird I’m just walking down the road, early morning sunshine tells me all I need to know! Dickie originally wrote this song after he married a Indian girl named Blue Sky!
@@EatAPeach72 Yes, the Allman Brothers formed in March 1969. Two years later they recorded 'At Fillmore East' and things began to take off. Stardom for Betts in particular came with the release of 'Brothers and Sisters' in 1973, which featured the smash hit Ramblin Man.
Neely posted this show on FB, here on the day we lost this musical genius. Very sad for the last hour. Great memories, though. Very proud that I was friends with the best band ever, THE ABB.
Whoever posted this...thank you! Great show and Dickey Betts, one of musics treasures. No one else can swing on the guitar, Bob Wills style and make it his own like Dickey Betts. One of the few who can make a guitar sing and that tone, that beautiful tone. He has his own beautiful tonal voice that was warm and so graceful like an eagle soaring high in the sky. Saw his band about this time in the Seattle area along with Roy Buchannon and Lonnie Mack but Dickie was truly great! The venue was called Parker's. Was anyone else there? Saw the ABB many times but that night was special. Hope you are doing well Dickey and proud of what you have acomplished. Truly one of music's all time greats. Never really given credit for the swing he incorporated into the music of the Allman Brothers. That was the difference maker. That's what made them unique. Blues that could swing or as Duane used to say.....Music for the body!
That GoldTop LesPaul has some mileage on it but it sounds perfect in the hands of its Master🎸It's obviously modified as well to accommodate the Floyd Rose Tremolo system. Not many Guitarists had LesPauls with Floyds on them in 1986🙏🏻Go Dickey RIP Mr Betts✌🏼🤠☯️
Duane Allman died in 1971. He played the first solo on Blue Sky on both the album (Eat a Peach) and the 1970 SUNY live version. Obviously, the song was written well before 1974.
Way before ‘74, Duane Allman plays on the original on Eat A Peach. Eat a Peach contains studio recordings from September-December 1971 at Criteria Studios, Miami-both with and without Duane Allman-and live recordings from the band's famed 1971 Fillmore East performances. Dudek did some work on Brothers and Sisters.
Better voice than most would expect…great B.B. King vibrato, too. It’s sad about his personal challenges, his broad palette of rock, blues, country, jazz, etc., truly brought a deeper flavour to the Allman’s. Sweet song, thank you Dickey‼️ 🇨🇦
@@duelenigma7732 How old are you junior…I’m basing it on Greg being the lead singer on virtually all Allman’s songs & most casual fans only knowing him from Ramblin Man. How long have you been listening to them? I DON’T care what you really think based on your statement. 🙉
@@daveguitarnowski4402 well, in those days they did stuff like that. Vintage guitars weren’t perceived as collectible with an inherent value but simply as old.My 57 Strat which I still own to this day will corroborate that……
I wonder if the Allman Bros Band would have made it big without Dickie Betts writing Ramblin Man, Blue Sky, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Jessica, and others. His guitar was as great as Duane's. More than likely, they both influenced each other. Dickey Betts guitar is always great.
Used to love his phrasing as a kid….spent lot of time in front of my record player learning the Solos Dickey played……am I being sacrilegious if I confess that at that time I preferred him to Duane….obviously not any more….now I rate them both equally
