I am glad for your comment...because I do often get sad about the past being gone. Your words reminded me of lyrics to an Eagles song.....If I never see the good old days shining' in the sun I'll be doing' fine and then some
@@richreed9927 The stage is full of electronic equipment designed to enhance the vocal and instrumental sound, but dmbfcks can't suppress their impulse to parrot the stupidities about auto-tune etc. from each other on almost any music video. The hilariousness of it is that each and every one of them believe that what they're saying is some kind of original piece of wisdom.
today 4-21-24 is my 70th bday a cold rainy day here in Greensboro NC to continue mourning the passing of Dickey Betts 3 days ago.... i was 17yo when i saw the original lineup 7-31-1971in a carved out of a cornfield venue in North Baltimore OH just a couple weeks after release of Fillmore East.... so "when i think about the old days" it becomes very sad... DB you done good here on Earth and your 80 years here were a true blessing to your loving fans....
Buckey, 68 myself, North Georgia boy ... some deep sighs and a lot of nostalgia playing through 54 years of ABB.. even here with Johnny Carson, Greg, Warren, Dickey, and all were spot on beautiful... I was out of the country a lot during the Toler and Boyer years, didn't catch a lot of that era, but up through mid 70's and 90's on I respected all their line-ups .. never again anything like these guys, and close to home and heart.
there is a song "great minds drink alike" they added a horn section after the fact and as you say even more amazing, that song came to my mind as i read your comment
Yes this sound mixing/ reinforcement and engineering is impeccable… those NBC technicians were great! The band sounds amazing …. Dickie and Warren were so tight in that lead break, then that harp behind the last verse… we tong see live music on television like that anymore… Oh baby, when the brass came in … what treat! Warren on slide and Doc Severinsen on trumpet… this is real music!
@williamlenihan7536 - Carson w the best host for music? Sounds like you get watched any Dick Cavett interviews? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--30OfVjHw98.html
@derekmoss7286 - Folks who don’t think different genres of music can’t blend together is a generalization. Rock musicians for example have been blending styles since day one. Off the top of my head: Clapton doing I Shot Tne Sheriff…Steely Dan…The Police…Red Hot Chii Peppers…Rage Against The Machine…
Dickeys' sound was so wonderful. The tone was warm and bold at the same time. If you only heard one note, you knew it was him playing. That is the mark of a true guitar god, to have your own sound. His death was a gutpunch to so many of us, but we are blessed to have seen him and hear him play and we can always visit him by putting on his records.
To all modern musicians on the radio, this is what talent looks like, i know you've never seen it before so take some notes though you may not know where to start. The last big band orchestra playing with arguably the best rock band. Priceless artistic talent never to be duplicated again. RIP to all, hope to here you guys again on the other side.
I5 musicians at least when Doc's group joins the band for a live jam. What a treat! I'm glad the Tedeschi Trucks Band carries on this high level live performances.
You could see Mr. Carson loved the jam session and was proud of his boys keeping pace. That was the first time I’d seen horns with the AB’s, pretty tasty
AMAZING!!! Dickey, Warren and Gregg’s killer voice!!! Followed up with Doc the Tonight Show band!?!? Are you kidding me!!! Absolute CLASSIC!!!! Great players!!
unbelievable to get all the horns in there....goes to show what a genius songwriter Dickey was....jazz!!!!!!!! I'll bet Doc Severinson was seriously stoked to play along
Saw this when it aired back in 90-91 oh man this is sooooo friggin good!!! It's sad that a lot of these great musicians are gone. Doc, Warren and Jaimoe are still here. Getting old sucks.
I am floored!!! Peel me up off my rug someone. If history is bound to repeat itself, how long do I have to wait for an occasion like this to come even close to a revelation? Today's music rots!!! Long Live Rock!
This jam session should be in the Smithsonian institution in the music section. What a collaboration of different types and styles of musicians getting together to create something so beautiful. This is just priceless. I miss these days of the Carson show, I was a young buck then without a care in the world. Great video, thank you.
Exactly! They're in the dictionary next to the word "Badass"! It doesn't get any better. Dickey,Gregg RIP,Warren, and all the rest of ABB, and Doc's band is awesome too. Today's music doesn't hold a candle to this. These are professional musicians at the height of their craft. Pure geniuses right here.🎸🎶
Give Warren Haynes credit too. He was a perfect fit to play with Dicky and provided a great deal of leadership that resulted in bringing Derek along. Thus, an extra two-plus decades of success. Don't believe it would have happened with anyone else but Haynes. Good stuff. Thanks for posting performances.
The Haynes/Betts duo is honestly one of the greatest in music history. Duane was a brilliant guitarist and had so much left to give the world musically, but died way too young. Warren Haynes is a brilliant guitarist in his own right and fit the Allman's style perfectly.
Been an Allmans fan forever but I just can't believe how great they sounded here. As a musician myself, I know you have some good nights and bad nights....this must have been a great night for the Allman Brother Band.- and what a rare treat hearing them with Doc and the boys!!
Many thanks to Johnny for featuring elite musicians playing the best live music ever; and very nice to see the group when they looked much younger and healthier. Awesome trumpet solo in the last song Doc!
Every member of the Tonight Show band was an A list jazz musician in his own right. The Allman Brothers went toe to toe with them and the mutual respect was obvious. I would have loved to hear the after show jam sessions after these shows.
Great thing about the whole ABB run, they always shared the stages with so many great artist. Artists considered it a great honor to perform with one of the best damn bands on the planet.
I saw the Allmans on this tour......EPIC!!! I consider myself extremely blessed to have had the chance to see the Allman Brothers live. They will go down in music history as one of the original badass bands that introduced us all to, not only, southern rock and blues, but ultimately to the concept of "jamming". Every jam band owes a big "thanks" to the Allman Brothers.
Was going through a separation, heartbroken. Our salesman knew my 14yr old son was playing guitar. He said here's 2 tickets for you and your son . Meet me there. Front row center. Incredible concert.
@michaelwills1926 OK, Junior. You don't have to educate me about "blue eyed soul." Referring to men as "boys" is never appropriate. Unfortunately, African Americans, of all people, refer to grown men as "white boys," yet would be highly offended if someone responded with, "I think that's also true with black boys."
One of the most UNDERRATED bands ever!!! Not the Allmans!!! Their greatness is solidified in music history. I'm talking Doc Severanson, Eddie Shaunessy and the Tonight Show Band!!!
The Allmans were never underrated. Everyone knew they were phenomenal and one of a kind. They set a musical precedent that can't be duplicated. There's always one comment about some musician being underrated in every post. 🙄
My comment, if you read it correctly, was implying The Tonight Show Band IS the underrated band... There's always one comment replying to something they misread.
It is stunning how young Mr. Warren Haynes looks in this video. Seen him live many times, but not back this far, great collaboration with Doc Severnson and the Tonight Show Band. Lots of fun. RIP Gregg Allman, Allen Woody and Butch Trucks.
This was true late night entertainment. A comedic legend, one of the greatest rock bands in history along with the fabulous Tonight Show Orchestra. The current crop of late night "entertainers" are absolute crap compared to this . .
Warren and Dickey together were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to the magnificence of Duane and Dickey together. Gah, what an incredible group, augmented by Doc and his guys. Musical Valhalla.............
The Brothers were the greatest show band in the history of R&R, imho, and Gregg Allman was the best white blues singer I ever heard. RIP Duane, Berry, Gregg, and Butch. You'll never be forgotten by those who saw and heard you.
So cool seeing Doc Severson again. The man would hit these notes possibly above high C, and his eyeballs would look like they were ready to pop! This showing is a first for me, and I almost never missed Carson.
This appearance on the Tonight Show is a great example of "buried" treasure!!! Great performances not yet discovered!! Should have no less than a half million hits here on YOU TUBE...
Lynn claughton awful it sounds like absolute shit. I heard dicky wanted to play with Lawrence welk and guy Lombardo. This is absolute shit. You need to change your post
The producer of show was angry at dicky for fucking up the green room with beer and trash Johnny Carson’s son booked the allman brothers despite Johnny’s request he didn’t Sadly his son died a year later when he dropped acid and drove off a car off a cliff while taking pictures. Allen woody fell asleep in a heroin daze while rehearsing sadly
This video is a classic performance in Rock 'n Roll history. Love the collaboration between the two bands with totally different musical styles, different genres, and different generations. Thank you Allman Brothers for taking a chance and surprising even the most diehard of fan. This shows the unifying power of music. All great musicians were present in the performance and we can all learn from this whatever walk of life we may come from.
Doc absolutely dug in deep for his solo on "Kind of Bird"; watch him reach for that high note. Dickey and Warren both matched as tight as ever, and cheers for the birthday boy today, Butch, for blasting away on the kit.
Absolutely love this band, exceptional talent everyone. Saw them perform live at the Atlanta Pop Fest in Byron, Ga. If you want to experience the feeling of that good ole boy southern blues, jazz, rock fusion may I suggest you get a copy of Live At the Fillmore, Allman Bros. BAND! YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
I was at Atlanta 2nd in Byron also. 3 days of intense 105 degree heat. Thank God for the river. Did you see Hendrix ? Read my post my friend. You may have a flashback however. 😁
The best music you'll ever hear. Ultra good musicians playing really well for and with each other. Jazz, blues and rock, 100% original American music. Fusion.
Absolutely killin' it! I challenge anyone to name a group that played with more power, precision, and skill. RIP, Gregory. I never knew you but I always felt you were my brother.
You know you're talking rock royalty when Doc comes to Johnny and says, "hey, we gotta jam with these guys." The result is a win for every viewer of any age, any musical genre.
RIP Gregg, Johnny and Doc. These clips are smokin! Growing up in the 60's everyone watched the Ed Sullivan Show for great musical performances. When you were older you could stay up and watch Carson at 1130pm who had on the next generation of comedians plus some great music.
Incredible, and Gregg, yowza! Kudos to the sound people (and band), good mix. Warren's killin' it. As others have mentioned, no pitch correction, no computers, no bullshit.
Neither band was going to treat the collaboration with anything but the most respect and their absolute best effort. Gotta love real professionals! I know this level of professionalism is still out there, too bad we really don’t get the chance to see it in today’s TV market.
Doesn't get any better Johnny and the Allman Brothers! Greg in his prime: Long, cool drink of water and simply a bad ass out-law with the voice of a blues god!!
I never tire of this video! And, with Johnny and Doc. Wonderful music you left for us to enjoy. ... thinkin' about the old days... Never to be forgotten.
Wow, what a special night - everything was absolutely perfect! Have not heard this before now, but what a performance!! Doc and the orchestra fit right in, sounded like they were part of the band!
Hi Joe Smith, Just wanna tell u that the 1st time I got to sit right up in front of this Seven Turns show was in Chicago, in summer, outside...I was 36 then. Wow, what an experience to be right up in it..me and the ol man of mine were in heaven. This is a standout for this band. Thinking about it now, older and health in devline, I am still amazed as a yound girl These guys would look u in the eye, they were frienly and wanted to engage u. From that show forward, we saw them 7 ×. I got to be a known face to Gregg, who would always kindly put my purse and belongings up by him and once sent me a pain pill w/a Perrier for an obvious migraine. A sweetheart. Also, I met Warren and Allen Woody at 3a.m. outdide Buddy Guy's Legends when they came outta their bus after a Gov't Mule show. Only a few of us remained quiet on the sidewalk and out came all 3 of them to sign autographs and share a joint. That was the ABB mag cover w/them on it that was signed. It sits in a beautiful frame in my living room still. I didn't get to sit close to anybody til 1990. but started going to concerts in winter of 1965 at age if 9! That was the Hollies, again in Chicago. That folowing summer of 1965, The Beatles at 10 yrs old w/,my Dad who laughed his ass off at all the crazy screaming girls. I fell in love w/music at about 6 yrs old for no reason at all. It took me 27 yrs to sit up close...and got truly spoiled! I coulda had a nice retirement from all that $ spent on concerts. But Soooo glad I spent it. Those memories make my 66 yr old sick self feel better in my soul than any $ ever could. Keep the music alive Joe and spread it around . I find very few who give a damn about it. God bless, peace and love.
I saw the band in Central Park in NYC in 71. Duane had fun reverbing his sound off of the skyscrapers. I’ll never forget his smile. Perfect weather and an indelible memory
I would put Letterman in the same category. He is a huge music fan and his appreciation for the songwriting genius of Warren Zevon was on full display when he devoted an entire show in tribute.
@Big Bill O'Reilly Hmmmm..... your name is Bill O'Reilly and I'm the Trumptard? On that note, back to listening to good music for me. I will leave you to your ill-informed trolling. Ciao.
I remember watching both of these Bros appearance's on the Tonight Show. It was great that they got to do all the songs in full...that wasn't the case when the one and only time they appeared on SNL January 1982...They did Midnight Rider & Southbound but, during their final song Leavin'... the show ran out of time and they cut to commercial. I was so mad I screamed at the TV...had I known that I was actually seeing the last of the Bros together for the next 7 1/2 yrs I would've been crying my eyes out too.
I saw my first ABB show in 1990. I then saw them at least once per year for the rest of their career. They definitely will always be one of the greatest rock-n-roll bands of all time !
I clearly remember those times from the early 1990s. I thought how the guys still sounded so good, including Gregg's voice. I also remember thinking "someday, THESE will be the good old days". And here we are.
Great show! I was lucky enough to have been there! It was the first time I'd been to the Tonight Show. If I remember right.., Warren & Johnny (Neel) made it possible for me to get in with them. I remember Gregg being really nervous.. He always got nervous before. "True Gravity" was one of Dickey's instrumentals from his LP before the Brothers reformed. Great shit! That band was a force of nature. They were all really proud of being on the show with Johnny Carson..
