Veteran fans of TimeGhost will know all about our World DicKtionary series. Well, it's making a reappearance as a special treat before we begin with Season Two of Between Two Wars. If you're scratching your head at what this series actually is then go find the original episodes way back near the start of the TimeGhost History Channel (over two years ago - how time flies). Let us know if you like this format, maybe we'll get through the whole alphabet one day. A lot has changed these last twp years, but do you know what hasn't? Love the Timeghost History channel and haven't missed an episode of Realtime, out of the foxholes, war against humanity, or the home front. Hoping to have December 7 free to watch the whole thing in real time. Thanks for all your work, so much to come.

@xeepromx Don't think there's anything to indicate that. Vlad Dracula was the ruler of Wallachia (the southern region of Romania that holds Bucharest, now seemingly called Muntenia), while Bathory was the the Countess of Transylvania (a central region that extends most of the way to the nothern border.) Bathory's ancestry up to her great grandparents, who would have been contemporaries of Vlad III's son, Mihnea. There might be some blood relation - with good enough records of European noble families, that becomes increasingly common throughout medieval times - but it seems like there's nothing particularly direct. Furthermore, the locations are even less related - she was living in her husband's castle, in modern Slovakia well to the Northwest of her lands.

The story was used as a side quest in Diablo 2, where the Countess, who bathed in the rejuvenating blood of a hundred virgins, was buried alive in her castle along with her servants, and although her estate fell into ruin whispers of evil remained.

Josip Broz Tito. Because someone has to do it. Aside from many other reasons: he had a great all-year-around resort island on Adriatic sea (Goli Otok), where you could go whenever his secret police would give you a free ticket to. Also, there's a rumor that one of his close associates made a joke to him ("Tito you're a good guy, too bad you are a Croat") which he didn't take well. Week later that associate was found dead, car crashed into a tree - road was flat, no curves, no other vehicles, in a middle of nowhere, and no other trees around except the one he hit. What a bad luck!

Tough one. There are circumstances like Mattias owed her a lot of money and that debt was "forgiven" after she was arrested. Not one of the witnesses actually saw anything, they all heard it from someone who heard it from someone. The most damning evidence came from Bathory's servants and their testimonies came during torture. And as Indy discussed, the whole religious and political infighting. And her supposed victims were only found after Bathory was arrested and removed from her castle. Lady Bathory is also credited with helping women in need with gifts of money or food, or with property disputes or in legal matters. However, there are accounts that show she wasn't innocent either. One of the victims found was a young girl that was sent to Bathory to work as a servant. This young girl was found in a cage that was suspended from the ceiling of one of the dungeons and her corpse was in a bad state of decomposition. She was only identified by a bracelet or necklace that her father had given her before she left for the Bathory's. One of the servants arrested with Bathory testified that the young girl was caged by Lady Bathory 2 years prior for punishment after having caught the eye of Lady Bathory's lover while her husband was off fighting the Ottomans, and was forgotten about until being discovered by investigators.

When they announced season 2 of "Between two wars" they said they had originally made 2 or 3 more of these, but not done any afterproduction on them as they wanted to start the "real" series (between two wars) as soon as possible, so with the short pause needed to bridge over between Suez and B2W2 this was almost ideal... maybe if the response is good enough on these "filler" episodes N-Z will also come one day. In Russia we had a serial murderer/torturer of our own - Darya Saltikova (died in 1801), who killed well over a 100 people, but only 38 got proven. She too was from a wealthy influential family, but things got so out of hand that the empress Katherine II had to strip her of her rank and money. Death penalty was replaced with life in a monastery though. Reign of Katherine II was probably the worst time for russian serfs, since "nobility" had pretty much complete control over them. Russia`s "Golden Age" indeed...

I don't want to write off the possibility of any human's inhumanity to another human, but I have to be skeptical of ANY sort or stories like this about powerful women in pre-modern times, even when there are claims "witnesses" and people who claim to have caught her. It just seems there is still room for people who were her enemies to claim things and then threaten anyone who would defend her from coming forward. But in 2000 I did help someone who made a short film about her. Actually shot it in the former Desilu studios in Hollywood. Not sure it was ever released anywhere.

Ealdy oh yeah it’s not like Rome didn’t have its problems, Sulla’s proscriptions, Clodious’s gladiators. Rome was in a state of degradation but guys like Cicero and Cassius were still around so I wouldn’t say Rome’s fate was sealed. Caesar caught Rome at a weak point, but he did more than just the last nail. The republic fought hard to keep itself together and if it wasn’t for that famous Caesarian luck he could have easily been anhilated at pharsalus or munda. Rome had its problems but Caesar walked in there with a battering ram. Not entirely his own fault tho, in some ways the senate pushed until he had no other options.

Can someone explain to me how people like this don’t end up assassinated? I don’t get it, I feel like when her deeds were so well known at least someone would have found a way to get close to her and just started hacking with an axe or something, it was the 1600s there wasn’t exactly great security systems

I still wish you guys never did Curtis LeMay for this series. The guy was a 100% legit WW2 hero who helped save hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives by causing the war to end much faster then it normally would have. And then for after the war his polices that he is criticized for were all about again ending wars as fast as possible if they happened in order to lesson the amount of lives lost.

He’s still a dick though even if his intentions were good

That's always very hard to determine if some is a dick, while being on the good side of the war. We get a similar problem with Winston Churchill.

@@martijn9568 Bingo. The victors write the history books, and if LeMay had been German he'd have been tried and executed after the war ended.

Sorry but General Jack D Ripper fully deserves to be the first entry in the dicktionary as a first class dick. First up the idea that the strategic bombing campaign against German and Japanese cities shortened the war significantly is at best debatable. In fact a number of historians argue that the whole thing was a waste of allied tactical and industrial resources on a vast scale and that it may even have lengthened the war as the things that weren’t done to enable the bombing effort would have had more effect on reducing the ability of the axis to wage war. After the war he was forever trying to start another world war either by expanding a regional conflict like Korea or Vietnam or de novo as in the Cuban missile crisis. As someone who killed thousands of his own men (strategic bombing forces had the highest loss rates of all UK and US forces) and probably millions of civilians trying to prove a misguided and quite obviously failed strategic concept he really does deserve his place in the dicktionary even without his post war obsession with vital fluids.

@Mars Attacks I disagree. I don't think it is debatable that his actions shorted the war, I'll explain. When the allies are bombing Germany, Japan and other Axis countries that forces people to rebuild the factories and homes destroyed in the bombings. That alone then makes it so that those factories are not producing weapons during that time and those people are not working on things productive to the war effort. Had the allies not bombed Germany or Japan they would have had far more weapons to hold out with and thus inflict far greater casualties. As for the bombing being what caused the Axis nations to hold out I again disagree. It was the terms of absolute surrender that made Germany and Japan hold out until they did. Both Germany and Japan launched strategic bombing campaigns before the Allies launched them back on the Axis forces. Of course the Axis forces tried to still use the bombings to their propaganda but in the end what was preventing Germany and Japan from agreeing to surrender was that the Allies were demanding unconditional surrender. Lastly, as for LeMay in Vietnam. The policy he wanted to implement there of bombing the north was what eventually did end the war there (The American-Vietnam war not the civil war fought after). When the Nixon administration did start the bombing of North Vietnam up this lead the USSR to tell the North to make a peace deal. This was because the USSR was not going to keep spending a higher percent of their GDP on a war then the US (which the USSR was doing) in a war they were not even fighting in to continue to replace all the expensive military equipment they had been giving the north. This position of the USSR forced the North to go back to the Paris peace accords and agree to the peace deal the Americans wanted.
