Great take on the card. My recent experience with canceled flights after Tropical Storm Debby confirmed my belief in Chase Travel and the protections you mention. If I were to have my credit card wish on the CSR granted, it would be high-end status with Hyatt or IHG. That's a glaring omission from my vantage. Keep up the good work.
When I was in Belgium a couple of months ago, it was the only card I used. 3x on daily Ubers, trains to both Ghent and Bruges, and on food and drink - and we drink ALOT. Plus the 10x on Lyfts to and from JFK. I love it
I’ve used the protections on a car rental claim in NZ and it saved me $700 for a rock hitting my window. I also save up my dash credits ever 3 months and use my $15, plus pickup the food to maximize value.
Good video and commentary. As a holder of the CSR, the axing of the priority pass restaurants ended it for me. I'll be downgrading next AF unless there are drastic changes. The C1 VX is kicking Chase's ass - sure the CSR travel protections are better, but the VISA Infinite benefits alone on VX exceed my travel protection needs (CSR is overkill), the card benefits yield no effective annual fee and C1 lounges are competitive with Chase and Amex as well.. just my perspective.
Great video Luke, as always. The car insurance benefit is definitely worth the card fee by itself. I always ask the car agents what it would have cost, and so far saved about 1500 usd for renting about 25 days of standard cars this year. Some of this was in Europe. Hotel portal adds quite a bit of value, and is an easy way to rack up chase points.
I have had 0 issues with the Chase Travel Portal. I found them to be slightly cheaper than direct airlines when I needed a quick domestic flight booked. Also, I called them not so long ago to push back an international flight (Lufthansa). This was cheaper than going direct to the airline. So yeah, I'm happy with the portal so far.
I have the CSR and will never get rid of it. The 300 travel is easy to use, the 10x lift is perfect when I travel and the new $20 door dash credits are perfect like you mention for things like water. Interesting is that you still get 3X points on all the door dash purchases. Great vid Uncle Luke!
$450 for now.I expect it to become public w/refresh in next 18 mos. Tho current ver of RC is slightly better than CSR, I and most ppl don’t want Marriott pts, esp vs flexible transferable pts.
@@newagain9964 From Ritz I want 85k cert, unlimited lounge access, free AUs, with lounge access and travel protections which are the same as CSR, with $150 effective AF. I had CSR before, but downgraded to Freedom Flex few years ago after they raised AF from $450 to $550. I replaced CSR with Ink Preferred.
The CSR has a great $300 travel credit and really shines with the 0.5 redemption bonus. One of the issues I see from time to time is that Chase makes the same hotel higher on the CSR than cards with 0.25 like the sapphire preferred of chase ink preferred. I think Amex is best for airports and Chase for hotel stays.
I’m patiently waiting for you to upload another video or do another live ⏳☺️ You’re my favorite credit card RU-vidr! ❤ You exude trustworthiness and peace and good dad vibes 🥰
@@LukesPointsandMiles if they are unwilling to change that. Maybe add a 2x mobile wallet category instead either on the CFU or one/both sapphire cards
I was at JFK yesterday and I was able to experience the new Delta One Lounge. I had arrived on Virgin Atlantic business class (via KLM - kudos to you for the idea) which granted me access. A Delta first class ticket and a Amex Platinum did not 🤨 The lounge was amazing. Delta is upping their game. The sheer mass of hospitality and alcohol was stunning. This lounge was leaps and bounds above Centurion lounges. There is a new king in US domestic lounges 😀
Personally I don’t usually pay for the extra AU’s because my player 2 always travels with me. We also share our finances and can combine our UR points between our Chase accounts. Of course I know not everyone situation is the same as mine, so it’s a good point to bring up
Chase CSR has a spot in my wallet. I default to it for travel swipes (I.e. car rentals and taxis). Since I’m overseas, the additional credits I can take advantage of but will once I am back in the states. It is a strong card that will stay in my wallet until I can see what Citi does when they roll out the Strata Elite… Awesome video Uncle Luke!
The Amex Platinum is by far the best TSA Precheck for families. Added my wife, daughter, and parents with companion cards and got credited for each lol. Got credit basically $390.
@@jungwoopark4644ppl always forget about companion card. lol. Amex is like one of those painting where ppl see what they want. But one thing is sure, most will stop and engage because it’s interesting. Amex is my fav but they need to push plat back toward travel (ie more statuses, improved travel protections) and less “lifestyle”. But I know they don’t have to and in fact counter to what DPs inform
1 month into the CSR and still have some of $300 travel credit left. You still get points with Lyft rides you just don’t get the base 3x. So for Lyft rides I get 7x points instead of 10x. Once I burn up my travel credit, I’m expecting to get 10x on Lyft rides.
Definitely spot on with the 625$ AF. The card was devalued for me big time when they killed the restaurant credit. I fly though DFW weekly and was so easy to swing in the restaurant for a quick bite and bolt, especially on tight layovers. I didn't think i would use the DD credit but i sometimes find my self where I'm "stuck" aka no car and hungry. I do cruise a lot with the better half and the travel insurance for cruises is crazy good. However most people don't realize some other cards Chase has does include insurance too. I need to look into the AU credits as well thanks!
You uncovered a great angle on life with a player 2. It would be good for a lot of folks to see your breakdown of 2 people with the Capital One duo (not having an authorized user, but, instead, 2x $395 annual fee) vs. them having the Capital One duo with p2 as an authorized user, vs. the Chase trifecta with p2 as an authorized user for the CSR. It seems to me that, if player 2 travels, then double Capital One duo is best because of the global entry/TSA credit for player 2, otherwise, it's better to go with either of the other options, with the Chase one being better for the higher spenders and the capital one duo with an authorized user being better for the lower spenders.
Haha! This was great video. The CSR to me still isn't worth it for most people, but for a one card set up for wealthier individuals, I do think it works. Venture X is just a better version, and if you combine it with the Ink Preferred, you have pretty much the same thing for less cost.
I am sticking with CSP for now with C1VX as Primary Travel card. In about 2 years I'll be eligible for Sapphire bonus again. At that point most likely CSR will be refreshed and worthy to acquire. BTW, nice bicycle! @8:25 😆😆🤣🤣
If they simply increase dining to 4x, I think you would see a lot of (but not all) folks jump from Amex Gold to CSP. With the $300 credit, the net cost of $250 would more than justify the jump despite the 4x on groceries you would get on AXP Gold.
Luke! Bro! 8:25, cmon man, my wife turned while I’m watching your video right at this moment Talkin bout “what the ef are you looking at?!!!” “Uhhhh credit card stuff 😬”
People who cruise a lot love this card since Chase treats cruises as travel and most other travel cards do not. Frequent cruisers can spend enough annually on cruises to benefit from the extra 2% (over the normal 1% for "other") on cruises, plus the travel protections. Campgrounds also are counted as travel by Chase, and we do camp, so I am planning on going through our spending and see if the CSR will be worthwhile.
Until the $5 credit is changed next February, the DD credit is essentially $25 towards the first 2 grocery pickups, without any service / delivery fees. Valuing the credit at 80%, that's $240 there and almost enough to offset the AF, before other perks like insurance and lounge access. That said, the CSP is the big winner, as the DD credits alone offset the AF, before everything else on that card.
I don't add my wife as an AU because it counts against her 5/24. That's something I wish I knew when I started. Plus, with Chase, you can call and combine your accounts so her points can transfer to my card. I think there's value in her getting other cards though. But, we do it that way because I'm military, so we don't pay AFs. When the day gets here that I retire then we'll have to do a lot of downgrading.
@@michaelkeaton32 AU don’t count against 5/24. She might initially get declined but a phone call explaining which accounts are AU’s will take 5 minutes. My wife has to call every time and then gets approved.
One strange fact I just learned about the $300 Travel credit is that it doesn’t renew on your anniversary year date but a month after your anniversary date. I learned the hard way. My account anniversary is first week of August. I added $200 in United Travel Bank on the 2nd week of August thinking it was going to trigger the travel statement credit but it didn’t. I called Chase and they told me my $300 travel credit renew 1st week of September after I paid the $550 AF. 😤
@@LukesPointsandMiles Yea, I actually didn’t believe the first Chase representative I spoke with and I called again to get a different representative and I was told the same thing. My $300 travel credit doesn’t renew until the $550 AF hits. And it takes a full month after your actual account anniversary date for the AF to hit. I wasn’t happy about this crap. This is why I love AMEX.
@@LukesPointsandMiles Actually, read terms and conditions for this $300 Travel credit. Is even hard to understand the credit renewal date after anniversary. You are smarter than RJ, check the terms. Confusing as hell 😠
you gotta use the doordash for pickup man! knocks off all fees, tips, etc. Only problem is all retailers mark up their products on DD so it's still not 100% at value, but certainly much better than delivery (for $ value, not time)
I'm not lazy........ I do not need Doordash or any of these related companies, and would get the food myself so it is fresh. What I do like....... Chase points are valuable at 1.5 travel thru Chase or to transfer to let's say Hyatt. Chase now has many lounges and also with Priority Pass. Primary car rental coverage. The $300 a year travel benefit is a freebie bringing the card cost to $250. Plus the Chase points usage bonus. So the cards in my wallet: Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Green, Chase IHG, Chase Hyatt. Perfect mix for lots of world travel.
Where the Chase Sapphire Reserve makes the most sense is being a regular passangers cruiser where your Chase benefits for emergency health insurance bring more value than if you paid an annual Travel Insurance policy from Allianz. If you cruise 3 or less times it might be cheaper to buy an individual policy but the more you cruise it can save $300 plus dollars a year just for single person policy. Luke you don't care about any Chase benefits but when it comes to all the travel benefits on this card when you need them they are there. However when you shop for it that's a separate expense that adds up fast. If I cruised in international waters often enough I would want this card more than Allianz.
@@LukesPointsandMiles When it comes to travel insurance that includes foreign emergency medical care and evacuation one thing Allianz ask for when issuing a quote is your age so I think the rates could be higher the older you are, but I don't know how much age plays a factor in their rates. I have never done a Berkshire Travel annual quote so I don't know how it compares to Chase for a full year travel insurance policy. Cruise lines don't deal with a personal health insurance policy. So if for some unforeseen major sickness occurs they want to charge your credit card the medical evac which is like $4000 or something that some passanger had to pay on his credit card. Even if you took your whole family on a 3 day Ocean cruise you're covered without even having to think about what Travel insurance you have don't have because that card covers every Travel insurance benefit you can think of. The only thing is you have to use that card to pay for your cruise. So no matter how much you like your Capital One X card when you use that card your Chase travel benefits are not going to help you.
Actually you do still get UR points on your first $300 spent. For example the CSR offers 10x on Lyft rides. And when I used my CSR as my payment form I didn’t get the full 10x but still got 7x on those Lyft rides. 10x Lyft promo - 3x all other travel = 7x UR points
Regarding not considering AU fees, I tend to put cards into digital wallets. My wife doesn't need an AU in order to use the digital wallet version or to use the physical version while I use the digital version.
@@LukesPointsandMiles I don't know if I have tried to put it in hers. That said, I have them in mine and she has the physical card when needed. It might help that she is Apple and I'm Android so there is only one of each on any card we both have added.
Came here to say my AU has not received a monthly $5 doordash credit after the first full month. Receive a monthly $5 credit myself for having the CSR, and added AU mid-July. Just received my September credit, but AU’s acct still shows no credit. Am I missing something?
Yeah I remember kind of coming to the same conclusion maybe a year ago when it was more talked about, I guess I never really understood where the outlier value lies other than the $300 credit, and generous coding worldwide. Maybe I’m just unaware ha. You think VX > CSR now that you’ve tried both so far? Ps. One day I’m going to ask you to try the Lyft Scooters with me and we can tandem ride 😂
Forgot to mention one more perk, rather rare in a credit card world - CSR offers 4 free incidents of roadside assistance. Used this perk in Canada when I needed to jump-start our family car.
I can assure you Chase hasn't done a great job rolling out Chase lounge in Phoenix. It's been "coming soon" for over a year now. No clue what's going on behind that wall but it should've been done several months ago.
Last week I spoke with one of the employees at the AMEX lounge who I have have seen there for many years. He told me he is going to apply for the Chase Lounge as they are going to open up applications in a few weeks. I asked him do they have an opening date, and he said, I would think soon if they are taking apps. But yes, I have seen that "Coming Soon" sign since that portion of the D gates has opened, close to two years ago now.
Well I have no background in construction but there are several lounges today that didn’t exist a short time ago. I mean they’ve doubled capital one in no time.
@LukesPointsandMiles fair point. Just frustrated with lack of progress on one here considering we're like the 5th largest city in the U.S. and it's pushing 2 years to roll out their lounge. These lounges are pretty basic builds so it shouldn't be too hard to pump them out when they've already acquired the space but I digress. Great content though!
Have the CSR since May. The card seems to get better and better, but I feel it needs one more benefit to be an OP card. Maybe cell phone protection, or digital entertainment credit.
@@williamyip2951 This is a Visa Signature card with an over $5000 credit limit. Visa has it's own Cell phone protection plan. Visa also has concierge service. Go to Visa Signature for all Visa card benefits. I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card with Visa Signature and have all the Visa benefits for it. The only way you get that benefit is you have to pay your bill with this card.
Genuineness from a YT covering points/miles/credit cards?! Dare I say you may have started something refreshing. I will say, I’ve used the portal several times back when the AF was 450 to book last minute flights and it did save me quite a bit. I think now more than ever, getting your points/miles to 1.5 is nothing to scoff at That said, I’ll stick with the Ritz card for now. I’m no coupon lady 😂
Im just not sure there is enough there for me and my situation. Not sure what the draw is. I'll take the Vx card with the free AUs for p2 priority pass, and 1 Sapphire lounge visit. Travel protections are nice, but we have insurance. 1.5x in the portal could be very nice, but I dont book that way unless I have to. Still a pass for me, but glad you are able to justify the AF. Always love the different perspectives here.
Yes, Chase fixed the Sapphire Reserve. Specifically through their redesign. The card is heavier, shinier, and sexier looking than any other premier travel card in the game now! Of course, beyond the shallow surface-level upgrade, it's still a good card. An important exception to my knowledge regarding the FF Number through a portal is American Airlines. I think effective three months ago, they switched to the Hotel formula of not honoring or giving points towards their statuses if you book through any channel other than directly through them. Just another reason not to fly American, lol
@@LukesPointsandMiles That's great news. I know they received a lot of bad press about it, but I'm so used to companies these days barreling full-speed ahead in spite of bad business decisions that their reversal must have gone under my radar.
I have the CSP and I only use it for some streaming and to transfer points. I haven't used the portal. I am only travelling domestically for the next few years so not sure the CSR fits my needs.
@@LukesPointsandMiles its probably going to be the only high fee travel card i stick to once i get out of the military. Still debating if the platinum is worth the high fee.
I've got a weird question. Since Chase has a bonus transfer to Marriott at the current time. Could we transfer to Marriott get bonus transfer amount. Then transfer to Alaskan airlines? Has anybody done this?
@@czrs85 I don’t think anyone would do that because the math is so bad. Let’s take a look. 100k chase UR points equals 170k Marriott points. Transferring 3:1 to Alaska gives you 56,666 Alaska miles. So you are spending 100k ur points to get 56k airline miles.
@@LukesPointsandMiles oh wow! You’re right! I didn’t realize it ended July 31st. Too many credits to keep up with across the board. I hope it comes back as I used that thoroughly
Hey Uncle Luke hope all is well, the chase Lounges where are they located & are they different then the United club lounges which Chase card allows access into either one By the way nice break down on Chase cards
@@LukesPointsandMiles I tried to visited that one but the terminal was to far from my departure gate . When I did visit H- Town that’s a wild city They drive crazy Lol should’ve went to Hobby Airport not George bush
Nice video Luke. CSR is by far my favorite general travel card for ease of use. I understand the point you were making on the $525 AF but was it really necessary to call out RJ like that? Just some food for thought...
No one gets authorized user because you have priority pass guests. Why pay for a separate membership if traveling together? And if both of you travel solo, one can get a different priority pass credit card like the VX for better value. Anyway, CSR has lost its edge for a while.
Meh it's a good card, but the only one of the "big three" that can't cover the annual fee in usable credits. Protections are very good to have, but how often are they actually used? The portal boost is also huge. Maybe I just don't travel enough to have issues to leverage these protections. I find it weird that I can justify the Platinum more than this. Like you said, I can't wait until Citi comes out with a big daddy card themselves to play in this game. I have the Venture X and don't have buyer's remorse.
@@Sivic50 the platinum is a great “gameable” card for sure. However, those travel protections are good for peace of mind. But I also think most travel credits are only for folks they travel a lot

Im not exactly sure what you are asking but but I think if your P2 holds the CSR (UA)- and her own chase cards - she can transfer to partners. I have never used either one of those insurances so I could not tell you which is better.

No - the two $10 monthly Doordash credits are only for non-restaurant orders (i.e. grocery & retail delivery). You also get an additional $5 Doordash /Caviar credit, which can be used at all Doordash orders (restaurants/grocery/retail).
The card just isn’t worth it. It’s better to run a preferred with a venture x (travel protections), or just a preferred. Maybe on day the reserve will match up. Needs more bandaids right now
I’m in that same $625 boat 🥲. I enjoyed my CSR so much in year 1 I’m almost positive I’ll renew it for year 2. The door dash credits are nice but I wish it would’ve added some sort of airline benefit (United) and or hotel status (Hyatt, Marriot or IHG). I really liked using the portal for my families rentals. Price was near the same as booking direct and getting 1.5 CPP was definitely nice
There is a limited Gold status offer on the CSR. You have to enroll in it and stay something like 2-3 nights and get Marriott Gold for a year. May have been expired now. Take a look.
