I don’t think Amber foresaw Johnny being so willing to expose all the unsavory bits of his life just to expose *her* . Honestly I think she thought that was the safeguard against ever having to substantiate her claims; him being too afraid and too ashamed that the world would see his own flaws and shortcomings. But she damaged him and his reputation enough that, at that point, he probably thought “Well I’ve got nothing to lose; bring it on. You have more to be exposed than me.”

I always loving hearing your perspective! I do disagree with you about it not being a necessary action to take Amber to court. Her allegations against him (DA & SA) are extremely serious, and I’m not sure he would’ve been able to save any face if people were not allowed to see Amber on the stand with her lies exposed. I’m happy he stood up for himself, and I think the trial resonated with a lot of people who have been in a similar situation. He did take accountability for the role he played in their toxic relationship, and I thought that was incredibly important. Thanks you for always sharing your thoughts in a kind and unbiased way ❤️

Respectfully, it sounds like Dr Grande might be basing his analysis on unsound information about this trial. One of the counts of defamation that Johnny Depp is suing over is false allegations of physical and sexual abuse by him of Amber Heard. JD claims that those specific kinds of abuse never happened in that direction. Moreover, he claims that he is the victim of, in particular, physical abuse at the hands of AH. The problem was not that AH told "an incomplete story" in her op-ed. The problem was that she told a grossly exaggerated story, which, if untrue, absolutely constituted grounds to claim defamation and great reputational harm to JD that wasn't caused by anything or anyone else but AH. At least to me, this sounds like fair use of the court system. I cannot imagine any other avenue to take in this society at this time to clear one's name of such grave allegations. I'm a long-term subscriber to Dr Grande and appreciate a lot of his analyses. In this case, I wish that this video did not contain such misleading information about a major civil case.

Amber's _lawyer_ took the view that if JD retaliated with even one nasty comment, that makes AH a "victim of domestic abuse" and therefore makes her op-ed truthful. Dr. Grande accepts that view. But I didn't hear that when I listened to the judge's instructions. Without listening to the instructions again (I haven't seen the full text online) my understanding that she is leaving that up to the jury. To my mind, no, you do not have to absorb every blow and every ugly taunt without firing back _once_ , even with words, for fear your abuser will become a bona fide "victim" and smear you as a "victimizer." What the jury thinks, we'll find out in a few days.

In Hollywood each hour on set costs millions, and Johnny made it a habit to show up super late and waisting everyone's time. He was also incredibly well paid compared to other actors. Combined with the fact he was a few years past his prime and not as popular as he used to be it just didn't add upp economically to work with him anymore.

I do think Johnny Depp misused the court's time because his intent was to reboot his PUBLIC image, and he used the legal system to do that. But she said that he committed physical and sexual violence against her. And she continued to assert that during the trial, including the sexual assaults. To me, those are really big lines to cross. I also think that after he lost in the UK, he would have left it alone. When she allowed it to be republished, and advertised it as that, with such obviously ugly timing, I think he felt compelled to fight against it. I cannot agree with Dr Grande’s assessment, when AH’s published article heavily insinuates that JD sexually and physically abused her, when it was proven that there is no evidence corroborating those claims. Moreover, JD was fired from fantastic beasts, after that publication. This alone validates this lawsuit. And even if JD loses based on the “shouting insults at someone is domestic abuse” argument, a technicality, this lawsuit demonstrated very clearly that AH is a compulsive liar, with little to no credibility. Not even her sister’s story matched up, and in fact contradicted AH’s version of events. It was absolutely the right move by JD to bring about the lawsuit, in order to expose this, and clear his name. He said it himself, the legal outcome doesn’t matter as much. What matters is that the truth of the matter regarding physical and sexual abuse, is known. If that’s the case, mission accomplished, and JD already won. If he’s awarded any damages, it’s the cherry on top.

Wouldn't you want your children to know that their father isn't a monster? Is it because he has a lot of money that he has to deal with it and accept the accusations? As for the lawsuit, if there wasn't probable cause, it would have been thrown out in the first place, so no, it's not a waste of the court's time. And to the substance’s Amber was as much a substance user as Johnny was, and now she decided to blow his use out of proportion and try to come across herself as innocent and naive about drugs. If anyone hasn’t noticed, it appears Johnnys drug use got worse after getting in a relationship with Amber, because amber was all for it, except maybe for the oxycodone that Johnny was dependent on, because that made Johnny fall asleep, and when he was asleep Amber was getting no attention from him, and that made her mad. And to use his texts, him venting to his friends as evidence of abuse is ridiculous. Amber is and always has been the abuser, and it was Johnnys right to file for defamation to clear his name.

I have to disagree. Johnny wanted to restore his reputation as a decent human being more so than an actor for himself and his children. I'm sure he wants to continue working but I think he wanted and needed to tell the truth and hold Heard responsible for her defamation and abuse. He had a right to. A mere publicity campaign would not have been successful and I feel that this court battle was. He's never harmed anyone but himself. Heard is very disturbed and I think it was important for that to be made public. I hope he can get better and I also hope no one ever falls into her Jekyll/Hyde web again. And he absolutely did not misuse the court; there are many defamation cases and yes, it's hard to prove, but you don't have to be a genius to put the puzzle pieces together. Just like it's not hard to see that his problems started when he started dating her. Plus the first lawsuit in the UK had nothing to do with Amber , it was against The Sun newspaper and she was there as their witness, plus SHE filed 3 different motions against him that were dismissed by judges before hand. She is the one that doesn't leave him alone. She's been lying over and over. The only prof he allegedly was awful to her are texts that he sent to his friends, texts she never would have seen if not for this trial. So I personally and respectfully disagree.

Hi Dr. Grande. While I appreciate some of the points you made in your analysis, I do think it is important to note that Amber did defame Johnny by republishing that tweet and adding text to it thereby claiming ownership of the title of the article. I believe she knew exactly what she was doing and did so with malice in terms of understanding what she was promoting in that tweet was untrue. As you recall from the trial, the text in that link of the online article directly references sexual abuse, which was not proven during the trial. I do not think that Johnny Depp misused the courts for this. In fact, this trial is the actual definition of defamation. While I understand your point of Johnny possibly using the media versus utilizing the courts to get his name cleared, that was not working. As you saw in the trial in the UK, The Sun newspaper won that suit even though Johnny tried to fight it. While I believe his substance-abuse was a major factor in making the situation with Amber a whole lot worse, he did not lose work in the past because of his substance-abuse. In fact, the industry knew all about it and still hired him because he was a great actor. You even heard in the testimony that when a studio hired Johnny Depp they knew they needed to embrace all of him. While he did spend a lot of money recklessly, he always had work so I don’t think he ever thought that work was not going to come his way. Clearly Amber Heard and her allegations changed all of that and he needed to take this to court to officially clear his name and to get his life back.

I never saw a Pirates movie or any movie in which Johnny Depp starred other than Sweeney Todd. I never paid attention to Depp's personal life and did not know anything about his personal life and had zero information about Amber Heard until the trial. Only from evidence adduced at trial with no pre-conceived opinion, I found Heard to be manipulative, desperate and a liar. Her incessant playing to the jury, changes of facial expressions "upon demand" as it were with each question by her lawyer, combined with her obvious, endless story-telling and gross exaggerations when she was on the stand were nauseating. The fact that her own photos and tape recordings demonstrate that she was the aggressor leaves no doubt in my mind but that Johnny Depp was abused by her and was justified to seek legal redress. Worst of all was learning how Heard succeeded (until the trial) in mis-using the MeToo movement to advance her retaliation of Depp. Dr. Grande made the point that Heard somehow thought it was ok to bully, hit and try to control Depp during their marriage. His analysis of how this mindset came about within her (i.e., fear of abandonment, etc.) is interesting but doesn't excuse it. It's amazing the marriage lasted as long as it did and kudos to Depp for acting first to get out of it.

I love your shirt, and your uploads always make my day! In this particular instance, I am surprised you came to this conclusion about the court case. As a mental health professional and an IPV scholar, I think the most egregious part of this dumpster fire of mental health challenges, addiction, and dysfunctional relationships was the original abuse of the protective order as a means to control the divorce proceedings, and then the subsequent, Heard-initiated media circus that rendered Depp defenseless, and then finally the charity donation farce that pulled in unsuspecting non-profits into the web. As I have watched this trial, I am reminded of the ordinary people who attempt to do these types of things on a smaller scale (i.e., bad mouth their ex to mutual friends and work colleagues, call CPS on their ex to get the upper hand in a divorce). These are manipulative tactics, through the misuse of public resources (i.e. the Court, first responders, DSS to name a few), that can cause financial ruin, devastate parent-child relationships and alter custody, and turn a person into a pariah in their community. The Amber/Johnny saga is that very story writ large. Not only should Amber be held accountable for manipulating the support infrastructure meant for victims, but also for putting future victims in the untenable position of having to defend against the cloud of doubt that now surrounds a true crime committed by a community member in good standing (who is in truth a perpetrator, but may not be recognized as such, as a result of doubt). The one silver living is the voice she has unwittingly given to male survivors, but it comes at great cost to their female counterparts. After she invoked the law, the only recourse was the law.

He didn’t have a choice because her Op Ed caused him to be canceled. Had she just taken her 7M and gone on with her life this would have never happened. His life had always been private until AH. I watched every witness, every cross etc. Dr Curry got it right when she diagnosed Amber with histrionic and borderline personality disorders. She was so thorough and easy to understand. Amber could be the “ poster child” for histrionic disorder. Using her attractiveness and charm to fool people but underneath it was a shallow person. You can see her express this on the stand as she constantly looks at the jurors because she will admit no wrong. The borderline disorder was expressed when she initially put JD up on a pedestal but then devalued him constantly. Also not letting him leave because of her abandonment issues. To insinuate that JDs career was not damaged is incredible but maybe because I’m writing this a year later I saw more? It’s pretty clear that she used the “ me too” movement at its peak and just as Camille ( JDs lawyer) brought out , she didn’t think all these witnesses would stand up for JD. She was a calculated liar that really thought she could get away with this. A master manipulator. She waited for a “ perfect” time to file a restraining order and then a ridiculous list of demands when she filed for divorce. She threatened to extort him if her demands weren’t met! To say this women wasn’t incredibly malicious and calculated is to say you too are being blinded. It was caught on camera at the penthouse elevators that she brought that actor up at 11pm while JD was away and Elon had been up there too. No wonder JD was jealous! She ruined her own career even though JD told her it’s not going to look good for her either. No one had even heard of her before JD so her agent was so ridiculous to compare her career with well known actors. She didn’t pay the 2 charities after 13 months! That’s when JD filled the defamation case. No doubt he has problems with drugs but so does she!! You have to wonder what happens to a person like her after her looks have faded. You wonder if she ever realizes how good she had it before all of this , not perfect but she could have helped him to not use drugs but she liked to “ party” I’m sure JD will be more careful. It’s fairly clear that Amber had a “ plan” in mind when she married JD. And she made a mockery of the me too movement and real abuse victims. At least JD showed it can most certainly be the man that is the victim.

He loved her and she just used that against him to abuse him over and over until the passing of his mother made him realize he had married his abusive mother. There's a heartbreaking recording when their relationship was dying where he realizes he fell in love with a mirage. You can hear his pain. Not only did she torture him, but she decided that wasn't enough and wanted to tarnish his name. The only thing he had left. He has every right to defend himself. He even said he was doing it more for his kids than for himself. He's human, it seems you forgot that. As the trial went along, I started seeing him more as a fellow person than a celebrity. And I realized all he went through with her. She's a living nightmare. He just wanted his reputation back, something that took him years to get. We all make mistakes; I've been in the same position as him, trying to drown my sorrow in alcohol. Drugs and self harm don't make you a monster by themselves. I started objective and I ended up liking him more than before. He's human, we're all in the same path of mistakes and pain, we all deserve some sympathy.

I must respectfully disagree with the analysis that the case was a waste of time and money and an abuse of the court system. Yes, both sides could have mounted separate PR campaigns to get their side across, but then it would be a mere case of he said/she said. By going to trial, both sides were able to present their testimony and evidence and have them examined logically in the same forum. PR campaigns could not offer a critical examination of the evidence effectively, it would be subject to hit and miss regarding it's intended target: the people. Even if both parties only sued for $1.00, it would not have been a waste for both sides to have presented their case for all to see and have the people come to their own conclusions, that is more valuable than the monetary damages.

My main point is that Depp had every right to sue. He had evidence of her abuse and had no way of knowing she would lie about everything. He had witnesses from almost everyone that saw Amber including the police. If he knew he had not done what she claimed, it was not a frivolous suit and the damage to his career was very real. To "clear their name" is the exact purpose of a defamation charge. The sexual attacks were when Amber was in college? She went to college? I thought she said she fast tracked out of high school to hurry onto LA and then began her acting/modelling career riding buses all over Los Angeles? Additionally, I read that she later got her degree via a home study course. (Wikipedia). And why change the claim at the last minute to accuse Depp? If she had been hit as many times as she claims, she would have had significant injuries, with or without rings. If she had any wounds most likely they were from Depp defending himself. In none of the recorded evidence does he admit, nor does she claim, violence on his part except when he vociferously denies it. "At least one occassion".. "some type of domestic violence" does not compare with claims of sexual rape with a bottle or constant and viscous "beatings". The evidence was overwhelming that Depp WAS a victim of physical, emotional and mental violence and attacks as well as dishonesty and infidelity. Agreed that he was a poor money manager but her claims were the catalyst to his complete and total fall from grace. I don't believe the same is true for her career due to his actions. As far as vindictiveness, he would have taken no action had she not tried to portray herself as a "victim" (she doesn't like the word but clearly paints herself into the definition), obviously at his hands What happened to the agreement in their divorce terms that they would let it go at that point? She did betray their agreement. I strongly disagree that Depp's goal was to destroy Amber. I've been convinced by the trial content that he wanted to clear his name. Sexual and extreme physical and emotional abuse as claimed are vicious and heinous claims and an innocent party would obviously want desperately to have the truth be known. illusion

Dr Grande: something to consider is that her friend’s depositions were taped awhile back, they were not recent. Also, their first depositions that were given for the UK trail were done so before the police bodycam videos were turned over. Rocky and Josh first told their stories thinking the bodycam video were lost. They lied about details of the police visits. Later when they had to testify again they had to stick to their story for fear of perjury. If you watch the bodycam videos and compare those to their version of events you’ll see how they lied about how the police handled the situation. That’s the real reason neither of them would testify in person for this trial. They couldn’t risk cross examination and perjuring themselves.

I've watched your channel for a long time, Dr. Grande. Here are some of my observations of my own. You are biased towards women. I have no idea why this is, but given the current social and political atmosphere, I believe this could be the reason. Saying mean or cruel things is a world of difference from using physical violence. Having experienced both at the hands of my father, to equate Amber's feelings being hurt by cruel words, which she absolutely did to Johnny as well, is not even in the same ballpark as punching someone in the face or hurling vodka bottles at them (even if you don't believe she severed his fingertip). These are not equal, and while Johnny was not a Saint nor completely innocent, there's no comparison here. Amber was a narcissistic, manipulative abuser. And she intentionally wrote the op ed to hurt Johnny by making false allegations. Defamation. Also, you tend to look at situations and do something I see in many folks of your age (I'm younger than you, FYI). It takes two to tango so there is a split of the blame and everyone is culpable. That is a terrible way to enable abuse and my dad manipulated marriage counselors who said that to my mother and him for years, allowing her abuse to continue. Amber has abused other partners. She has a history of it. Johnny never has. He behaved badly, and speaking from experience, that's what manipulative abusers do. Once they get you to behave badly, they use it against you which my father did to me and Amber did to Johnny. We're only human. It's very hard to stay calm when dealing with repetitive abuse. I wish you had it in you to realize Johnny would not have behaved this way were he not being abused. That's not excusing him, it's just understanding him. And in this case, I consider your giving her a pass in some respects cold, and as a therapist, unconscionable. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she deserves more empathy, and just because Johnny behaved poorly doesn't mean he was on the same level as her.

I've written on this channel in the past at the way Dr. Grande of simps in the cases of women. He can never bring himself to conclude that their personality traits are solely responsible for their actions, he often mitigates their culpability by also blaming their victims for inviting such cruel and callous behaviour. I genuinely think it is because he was very unsuccessful with the opposite sex in his younger years and that insecurity as engrained itself pathologically as an idolisation of the perpetually unattainable.

Saying that it was a waste of time, energy, & money for JD to take AH to court is rich coming from a psychiatrist. It's not a waste of time, energy, & money if you can afford it. Meanwhile there is a world of survivors hanging off every word, every twist & turn of this trial, hoping to get vindication for their own feelings of their struggles. 😕

To be fair, these trials can be extremely expensive, and they take an emotional tool on the participants, specially the victims. And for a lot of victims, it is indeed not worth it. It depends on the individual, their personality, and their circumstances, of course. Sometimes settling for a monetary compensation is way easier. PS: I do have personal experience with domestic violence cases, by the way. I was a minor though (one of the kids)... I was already a teenager/almost an adult and yet testifying was traumatic. It took me years to realize how traumatic it was, the trials. Multiple ones.

@@kramalerav True. And yet he grants himself a waiver with respect to the obligation to attend to the evidence. It speaks very poorly of his professional integrity.

I disagree. Johnny was put in a terrible position where if a man is accused of DV, and he's lost his career bc of her lies, and the only way he could get his career back and clear his name was to put it in the world's eye with the courts looking at the evidence. It doesn't mean he's blameless - they both said nasty things to each other. But when it comes to actual violence, Amber was the guilty party. And by exposing all his crazy behavior as well, he was able to clear his name in much of the public's eye. It's impossible to know how much they'll reflect.

Ambuser is a liar. A narcissist manipulative woman. She’s the one who made all of this public, not to mention she’s a bad actress. I’m sure she’s guilty and Johnny deserves retribution
