Did HAMILTON BOYS' HIGH play GREY COLLEGE'S U16 team?

Grey College disappointingly sent an U16 dominated team to the World Schools Festival in Thailand in 2022, meaning we couldn't see the best against the best as we anticipated. Will they send a full-strength team to this year's festival?
None of the video footage is my own.

There is a tradition in Grey that at the end of your grade 12 year you walk underneath the old bell. This means that your time at Grey has come to an end. The players who didn’t attend the world schools festival are the ones who have already walked underneath the bell, thus they couldn’t play because their time at Grey has ended.

@@neonrugby Great Video Now let me explain from a former Hamilton Boys pupil. 2 things to bring up , 1. Hamilton can only play what’s in front of them. @brendonjosephmoviez The problem is that the tournament was held after the boys had already left school. Affies, Paarl Boishaai, and other schools will also never allow boys that have finished final exams and left she school to still represent the school. I don't blame Grey. Also, remember many of the boys have provincial contracts that start after they leave school. Why would they risk injury and jeopardize their professional career? The world schools organizers should wake up. They moved the tournament to the end of the year, knowing it would be impossible for SA school teams to send their first teams. The first world schools tournaments were held in SA at the beginning of the South African and New Zealand schools rugby season. The New Zealand schools didn't want to send their first choice teams because they argued they didn't want to risk injuries against the big South African boys because it could impact their team for their season back home. As if the South African schools don't have the same problem. However, as always, in rugby, world schools buckled and bent the knee to favor New Zealand rugby. South Africa should stop participating in these events that are clearly set up to disadvantage our teams. We have the strongest schoolboy rugby system in the world. We will be morons if we jeopardize that just because New Zealand is too scared to play our full strength teams.

There’s actually a pretty good reason for that and when I first watched that grey team walk I knew instantly that wasn’t the first team but a trial team (recently confirmed when I watched their pre season game). Here is how it works and forgive the lengthy paragraphs: 1. SA schools operate in reverse to the northern hemisphere and the tournament was hosted at the end of the year. This means although most teams present were in their mid season, Grey and other SA schools didn’t have their seniors available due to final exams and the fact that by that time they were no longer considered part of the school and couldn’t represent it on the field. This is why this team only has 4 players from the previous in season games since they were juniors and are playing as seniors now. This is also why they pulled a lot from their second team and U16 which is smart for the second reason (also impressive they did so well which shows this school has high prestige and the players know what is expected of them). 2. This leads to the second reason which is that SA schools do not care about other international schools. All they care about is beating their derby. Beating the big Paarl schools, Paul Roos and Grey High is their top priority because of history, these schools have been facing each other for over a century and as a first team player that’s the legacy you have to hold up. This is mainly why they’d rather use these tournaments or festivals to get inexperienced players some game time and try things out, instead of aiming for a big W. That being said they still expected to perform but I also suspect they learned from Paul Roos when they went to the Sanix tournament. Paul Roos brought their actual first team and used the tournament as a preseason tour. Proceeded to win and run over every single team and putting 50+ (emphasis on +) on most teams. That was impressive but once they came back home to take the season on, they got ran over by all their derbies (Grey especially) even though they had excess of talent in that team. Many attributed this to not having a normal pre season back home on their domestic level which tends to be much higher than other parts of the world. Thus when the time came to verse the big schools back home they were unprepared and took a hidding. That being said Hamilton deserved that W solely on the consistency they showed and they were a well oiled machine. Should they tour SA mid season it would be a completely different story but definitely some games I’d get out of my way to watch. I must say I was a little bit disappointed by those European teams 😢 saw a lot of big well fed boys walk on that pitch but the skills, pace and just physicality was pretty average at best, I expected more… although that one team wearing brown (can’t remember the name for the life of me) did show some good rugby so they should definitely come tour Paarl, Stellenbosh and Bloem… they’ll meet some big hungry boys that love to drive a maul from the half way to your try line if you let them.
@bunnychowmuncher

The no2 reason is a valid reason to barr them from future tournaments if this attitude persists. It was disrespectful to all the global teams and the rest of SA - let another school go if this is their attitude - terrible outlook.

@@bunnychowmuncher bruh other schools don’t have the money to travel all the way to Thailand… that’s the main reason there were so few sa schools. It’s also the timing, the season was way past over during the tournament and not every school would allow a tour at that time. Not to make excuses for the lack of representation but likely Grey went because Grey is Grey… they got two birds in one stone as they still managed to give a great performance and gained the experience before even pre season started 🤷‍♂️
@bunnychowmuncher
@bunnychowmuncher Год назад
@dreammaker9642 As a South African all I can say is youre talking Complete nonsense. Grey is in one of the lower earning regions and it got to go as a rural entity. The other top schools would have parents and fans raising the money in addition to Corporate sponsors. Then there are the private schools like Hilton and Bishops who both had great teams in 2022 who could have easily got access to funding. They would have both easily beaten the Grey U16 team. If I was in charge of SARU Grey would have got into serious sh1t from me for accepting an invite to represent us and then snubbing the entire world including ourselves for making the Tournament their personal test lab. I'd say do it again and you get a ten year ban to start.
@dreammaker9642
@dreammaker9642 Год назад
@@bunnychowmuncher tell me you don’t understand school rugby without telling me you don’t understand school rugby🤦‍♂️ you literally repeated half of what I said with different words… The other teams you mentioned don’t care about sending out a tour at the end of the year when everybody is on holiday and parents that have the money would complain that it’s in the Christmas holidays so they can’t travel and stuff. That and the fact that as I mentioned South African schools don’t care about international… all they care about is their derby, Craven week and SA schools… having played high school rugby through all my high school experience and having watched and played those big schools, they only care about their history and legacy… some random international tournament with lesser teams doesn’t hold any value to them and what the rest of the world thinks of South Africa has never really been South Africa’s concern especially when it comes to rugby. So yeah thankfully you not the head of SARU and idk why you brought them up cause they barely have anything decisions in this… you think Grey got the invite and SARU even could be like no you don’t go and make someone else go? Are you dumb ? Only way that would happen is if SARU paid for the expenses but that’s a dream in itself.

The way they select players in these big schools the 3rd team is often as good if not better than the 2nds team. @@neonrugby I don’t really see anything wrong with that tho… The way I see it is Grey for an opportunity to run the ball and get the younger guys in far earlier than other SA schools which seeing pre season games now seems to have worked in their favor, they seem set and ready to roll. To be honest I get why they’d not send a full 1st XV, they have nothing to gain out of the winning the tournament but have a lot more to gain by giving youngsters some game time ahead of the big derbies coming later. We’ll see as the season comes along but I think that was a pretty smart move. Especially pulling so many U16A, they clearly are trying to think ahead and give these guys some experience early before they reach Matric and become seniors. In the game if inches these big schools play at, that’s a big difference.
@dreammaker9642

@@oldtighthead2459 even then they won’t be at full strength… you don’t go full strength during pre season, that’s your time to let some younger inexperienced guys get some game time and try out any tactics you want to try out without risking taking an L in your season or against a rival. All teams do that which is why it’s an important phase. You also don’t want to risk injury especially if it’s just a festival and you have nothing to gain from it.
