I really do not like grading. People who use grading services often don't even know the grading criteria or what anything means. It feels more like a gambling/speculation service being provided by grading companies. As evidence, this customer saying he expected a breakdown or explainer of the grading to be included when he purchased it. By his own admission he also has no clue what his items are worth and that is why he is at the shop. Lots of people seem to find value in grading, but it is definitely not for me. I also prefer loose collecting and do not find any added value in the grade and product being sealed away. To each their own, thanks for the video! Edit: Grading is also an artificial way to make something rare. Having a low population number on a grading service does not mean an item is rare. It means that specific item in that condition and actually graded is rare(for now). But there might be someone sitting at home with a tote full of those items in mint condition ungraded. Another reason for low population items is that there is simply not a market or demand for that item graded. Not mad that grading is an option, but it is not for me.
Sometimes i watch a video like this and wonder why in 1985 I didn't just keep them all in the boxes, but then I remember how much better my childhood was by taking them out and transforming them.
I think the best compromise is take them out carefully / gently BUT keep the boxes after. Its more optimal obviously if the box is resealable like Transformers as opposed to MOTU where its destroyed once opened.
It's good to remember too, that kids like us are the reason why these old boxes toys are worth anything. If there were too many still available and in the box (cough, Star wars, cough, Star Trek) they wouldn't be worth much of anything at all.
@@P1Gman Good examples you gave. Some modern toylines are kept so often in package that they will be worthless in the future as so many havent opened them. Value is caused by popularity & rarity so if everyone does it they are no longer rare.
I bet ted Bundy and Jeffrey darhmer were MISB collectors as children . I think I'd worry about any child that didn't rip their new toy boxes open immediately on sight
You should have a discussion/discovery table for this type of situation. Floors are dirty no matter how much you clean, especially in high-traffic buildings.
Yeah, something like this would be terrifying on e-bay. Imagine that it might get damaged in transit or the buyer might mess it up and claim a refund. Yeesh!!
Eh, I ship higher priced items and fragile stuff often. As long as you do your part it’s fine 99% of the time. On something like this you put insurance and sign for at delivery. The bigger issue is the fees. About 24-30% a month goes to fees and shipping from my sales. Something higher value I’ll go to high end groups and do it thru PayPal and ship to them independently. Works way better. Fees structure like taxes 9-13% fee up to 2000 then anything over that is 5% (just as an example. But yea long story short it wouldn’t have made a huge difference if he sold them for 4000 vs 3000 cash. Plus cash deals are done and walk away no buyers remorse 2 weeks later stuff.
I’d have said a hard 3k but I prefer loose to boxed and graded, there’s something about a lose toy that’s in good condition. It feels like it’s been played with but also been taken care of
@@chexcollects Yes and i prefer it to be out of the packaging for that. But what i really meant was i don't own toys for the value or to resell later on. This is about loving old toys
What a great video! Must be exciting when pieces like that walk in the shop. I had a similar experience with 3 Derek Jeter rookie cards. Packed away and untouched for 30 years. Sent them to PSA and all 3 were 8's. The differences in price from 8's to 9's are nuts. Jordan.
Yo, Team Jet Fire, assemble! Edit: 8:57 - I think it's awesome that you have a Layaway Plan! I hope parents are using it to teach kids to save up and buy their toys this way! Very cool!
I always played with my toys. Only regret is I gave away He Man castle and snake mountain to a little kid in a garage sale 15 years ago. But back then they weren't worth much. But they were in the boxes.
@kurtstergar1042 if we only knew back then of what we know now. I remember KB toys lionel Play world, old Toys r us from the 80s 90s. Shoot my mom would but Star Wars figures from places like Kmart and hardware stores. She use to get is Teansformers from Jeffersons Sears and the Treasury. Simple times better times for sure.
Yah Y2K was a terrible time for toy collectors looking back. I passed on so many things that have skyrocketed today. And gave away just as many …hahah totally sucked
I feel like the grading system is real subjective and I'm very skeptical of it. If it's collectible cards, comics, or toys I'm sure they keep track of how many of each item they grade at a certain level and they gatekeep.
Always look forward to Saturday mornings to see what toy federation has been up to. I love a good negotiation that both party's are happy with. Very nice pick up!
Imagine buying a vintage sports car sealed in a clear cube. We need to break all the graded toys free from their sterile, adult-brain-invented prisons-a vintage toy revolution.
I remember these at Wal-Mart with so many other figures in the 80's. Man there were so many, can't remember another time getting that excited until I got to see my first set of Ta-Tas as a teenager.
What makes Jet Fire the coolest Transformer is that the figure is a repurposed Macross Valkyrie. Robotech which was renamed American Macross never released a figure as cool as what ended up being Jet Fire
Pretty cool, I don't really care how people collect, opened, sealed, graded, etc. It can all be neat and fun, but my only thing is that grading these days is a total craps shoot. There's been tons of controversy within the grading companies, that my trust in their grades has plummeted, though this is more true of what I've been hearing from the card and comic grading companies. On top of that, a lot of times if people didn't like the grade, they'd crack the case and send it back hoping for a higher grade. Its always a risk, because they could get a higher grade, or they could get a lower grade. It goes to show that there's no real metric to grading, your item is just at the mercy of the opinion of whoever's lap it falls on.
Seeing sort of thing makes me lament not saving the boxes with my original Transformers. Of course no one really is in the moment. I do distinctly remember the rounded plastic section on Jetfire that holds the metal joints at the shoulders where he folds in robot mode breaking. My dad tried a few times trying to reglue but it would keep snapping in those spots. Common design flaw from what I’ve heard from others. Yamato corrected the design when they did their Macross figures in the same scale. Question: the wife and I are going to be coming up your way in early April on our way to Asheville. I want to see about unloading some stuff that I don’t display anymore and free up some storage. Do I need to call ahead or just stop by? Thanks.
I’ve gone in to sell stuff before! I just messaged him on Facebook with the stuff and he said he was interested. I also have called in and that worked as well
Had both those as a kid. Wish I still had Jetfire. Actually got it not because it was a Transformer but because the model it was taken from was from the famous anime,Macross from 1982. Some of the early Transformers and Battletech stuff was taken from Macross before Harmony Gold stepped in got their grubby paws on it.
I fail to understand the secrecy of grading. The companies who do this fail to release their rubric to justify the grade. Their "experts" are often waay off.
It’s an acrylic case right? Why don’t the grades face out? I keep seeing y’all struggle to read them and to remember them. 😂 Thanks for another sweet video.
I really like the way he gets on the ground to inspect and consider the value of the toy. Just like a kid would when he got it home from the store and opened it and began playing with it.
Not a fan of grading, could go into detail but hey this is the collecting world. You collect what makes YOU happy, value is whatever someone else is willing to pay, $1000 may be too much to one or too cheap for a graded Jetfire. Of course value means something when your business revolves around market value and not "My feeling is it's worth $X".
That IS a pretty generous offer. I think most fair people do offer 50% but I don't think you low-ball your customers and thought you might initially go with 2500 and go as high as 2750 because you added value with the shipper. $3000 right out of the gate and firm, yup, I definitely think that's a great offer.
I was pretty surprised at how loose most of the sales and collections in your videos were, it seems that’s just par for the course for 30-50 year old toys. Gradable things must be a rare treasure!
I think it depends on the buyer. Some love the extra info to know exactly what it's worth (not exactly but closer than a non graded figure) I personally like to know it's authentic. That's my only concern.
Having a MIB Jetfire in my collection, especially amongst my vintage Macross toys, is a must. Picked one up about 15 years ago at a consignment toy shop. He's always been my favorite character since his debut in the cartoon and the fact that his toy was just a repainted Robotech VF-1S was even better since I also became a big Robotech fan after it aired in the US. I think it's so awesome that we live in a time when we are getting great renditions of both versions. I grabbed the Takara Megatron reissue in the dual box packaging with the Pat Lee artwork a few years ago. As cool as the original box version looks, I like the reissue so much better.
So, you’re super informative and fair, but I could never quite place my finger on why I find you …. .. difficult? with people. Whenever you discuss money (and other aspects), you look to your team rather than the person you’re dealing with. Even when directly asking a question to the seller, you’re still looking at your team, pulling a face or looking for validation. I only started noticing this recently.
I'm not a big fan of things being sealed and graded myself. Especially toys that are supposed to be played with. And it adds more difficulty in pricing, as shown here. But, it is interesting to watch, nonetheless. SEARS won't be around much longer, so that Megatron might go up in value.
i graded my loose beast wars transmetal megatron that suffers from gold plastic syndrome but still in one piece. myself keep only certain copies in OVP. however the gradings of videogames, really disgust me.
I’m not gonna go to the comments, but am I the only one that sees a Valkyrie every time there’s an action figure of Jetfire? Hell, I remember when I was a kid I wanted Jetfire just to play Robotech.
If u pay $4000 for Jetfire and Megatron and not gonna open them then u a idiot because how u gonna play with them. Toys r met to play with not just sit in a sleeve and collect dust + 4000 u can buy more boxes toys if u don't care about perfect boxes nothing is perfect in this world and + better have insurance on them more money out the window when there no guarantee on toys or the owners or owner u buying from because they say take me to court and also good luck in finding another one if damaged or stolen
Wasn't jet fire called Sky Fire in the US? I received a Jet Fire when I was a kid here in the UK and seem to remember the states called him something different :).
I have Jetfire in the box and as long I have the box and the booklet and all the accessories and of course the transformer it doesn't matter if the box is perfect because nothing is perfect because of dust flood or drop Etc I won't pay a lot for a toy that crazy because nothing last forever because life doesn't last forever
I grade video games qualified for VGA means the game has been opened but the contents are unused cgc qualified can be alteration signatures stuff like that
Question if u buying the toy in the box and never opened then u need get 3 because 1 in box never open, 2 open and alt mode, 3 open and put in a different alt mood if u gonna be a true collector in the transformers world must have 2 at least so u can interact like the cartoons world plus need have them different alt
They care about your money they pretend they care about u but they don't because it business "In the business World it all about the money" fuc* the customer that how i seeing it with these guys wait on u blah blah blah blah
Hi Guys !! awesome episode here..... Dont get me wrong, but can i give you a recomendation? maybe your editor could add some (bell sold sound) or a cashier machine sound or even better when you guys closed the REAL DEAL put some neon 80s letters with the final amount you paid.... I dont know, like doing more visual the video. Some of us are from another countrys and English is not our main language. We love the show but some times is hard guessing what is going on..... =) great content.
Awesome pick ups. 3K was a fair price for those. A friend of mine has that Megatron graded as well. I can definitely say they look super nice in the acrylic cases. Great video as always. I enjoy these deal making ones
