What Gear Did I Take Up Ben Nevis?
In response to comments on my Ben Nevis video claiming I hadn't gone prepared I thought I needed to upload this footage taken before my climb to show that I had all the right gear for the mountain path and my only mistake was underestimating how long it would take to go up and down before night fell.

Yes I misjudged how much time it would take to go up and down Ben Nevis, but I was much better prepared than a lot of people I saw on the trail that day.

Been up the Ben in my late teens with another pal in the 80s. Pair of BK hiTop trainers, pair of jeans, an old ripped teeshirt and an Ocean Pacific sweatshirt. Plastic carrier bag with two cheese rolls a can of Pepsi and a Mars bar. And more than enough green to get us up and down again. Ok it was August but ffs really- all this gear? There’s weegies climb the Ben at new year in teeshirts and a bottle of Buckfast laughing at the tourists pretty much every year 😂

I agree there's too much emphasis on kit these days. My dad (a Londoner who'd probably never climbed anything higher than the Chilterns) stayed in Fort William for a week in the 1950s and climbed Ben Nevis twice before breakfast in sandals. They were made of sterner stuff back then.

Thanks mate. The channel is brand new so I'm not sure how frequently I'll be able to upload new content, but I hope you consider subscribing so you'll know when I do 👍

I'm watching this before watching the climb. I would have gone up in my Mr Benn pyjamas.

Not bad but a headtorch is a much better idea than a hand held torch, especially if you might be using trekking poles. Still, lesson learned hey?

Thanks for this video. Would it be possible to share links to the waterproof trousers and jacket you had in your backpack? Also the gear you was wearing please? Im quite new to all this backpacking and any recommended, tried and tested gear will be greatly appreciated, thankyou.

@@titanicicaproduction I'm also quite new to hiking and I found all of the gear in this video in either Go Outdoors or Trespass which are UK stores. The Rab clothing is very expensive and you can find much cheaper alternatives, but I saw other RU-vidrs recommending it so I bought some as it is well made and also very light weight.

Always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it obviously pack of fridge in the summer

Not true. Overpacking will see you overweight and staying under 12% of bodyweight for gear is hard. We would often travel light + fast for safety

A map and compass....'as a last resort'...nope sorry, essential to take on Scottish mountains, and to know how to use ...
@madmentalken

Had the mist closed in thicker, or you unexpectedly encountered sleet/snow (not uncommon at this time of year) then you'd have been goosed without and struggle to navigate safely off the hill...don't rely on the cairns, no good of you cant see them..and don't rely solely on GPS/phone apps either
@80skidoutdoors-00
@80skidoutdoors-00 3 дня назад
I meant it would be a last resort if you didn't have a phone signal. Most people rely on their phones and I'm pretty sure most of them don't even take a map or a compass up there.
@madmentalken
@madmentalken 3 дня назад
Yep, there’s plenty tales of woe re folks who venture onto the high tops without map & compass and are blase re navigation with a phone. Navigation is a fundamental requirement. More fool those who don’t prepare themselves

I've watched so many vids and IMO the one thing everyone faults to pack is a flare, if your in distress and managed to make a call the hardest obstacle for emergency services is to pin point ones location, a flare or some flare could save so much time! you may never need it but IMO its essential, especially travelling in a group even more so going solo! yet not one person on youtube packs flares! why not?

Do you mean the static type or the type you fire into the air?
