Guess what? More metal work! Toad we tackle to tail pan and finish weld the quarter panels to the car. I decided NOT to replace the whole panel. Just used what I needed from the repop piece. A little cut here, a little weld there and we had it sorted.
Next I bolted together the all new steering and I picked up a set of new to me wheels and tires. 17s up front and 30 inch slicks out back? It's giving me drag and drive vibes....

A buddy of mine had a gtx and crashed it. I picked up all the little pieces of that grill off the ground and put them in a box. Took this home. And I glued this crazy puzzle back together. All the pieces were were there. Cleaned it up and painted the grill flat black. Another friends bodyshop put the car back together but couldn't find a new grill or used. Should've seen his face when I pulled the out of my trunk. It looked great. Put it on and the car was complete. Happy dude he was for me saving that grill.

Some get so bent out of shape if you run anything over 15” wheels while most of these cars came with 14’s originally so technically they are big wheel peeps too.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 6 месяцев назад
Actually, uh, no. 15" wheels have been the largest wheels used on American cars like forever, all the way back to the '30s. Drag slicks and drag radials are commonly 15". One of the cars I built was a 1978 Camaro. I put 275/60-15s in the back on 15x8 wheels, and 225/70-14s on the front on 14x6 wheels. For those that don't know, Z28 Camaros came stock with 15" wheels, base models, LTs, etc. came with 14" wheels. Pretty much all late model cars come with full GHETTOS, like 19s and 21s. These originated in the ghettos, where pimps, drug dealers, gang members, and other criminals with financial means started putting them on their cars as status symbols. Then somehow, like baggy pants, these abominations found their way from the ghettos into mainstream society. Not only are they disgustingly ugly, but they are downright dangerous. Tires that go on these reehuums (in ghetto speak) don't have enough sidewall to support the vehicle. There have been a lot of accidents, some of them fatal, in my state on bad roads, where potholes destroyed these tires with 1" sidewalls and broke the wheels into little pieces. 15" is the max size, both for looks and safety, unless you are talking about an 18 wheeler or other large commercial truck. A 1977 Lincoln Mark V that I once owned, for less than a year, which was a HUGE car, over 19 feet long and more than 2.5 tons, had 15" wheels with real tires with sidewalls on them. Whitewalls no less. They worked fine.

nearpar, I am also guilty of buying overeseas replacement parts and they line up close enough yet Dan is having to do all this work to the quarters because of a inferior product that you would think it's a quality replacement parts. The whole goal is not to have body filler on new quarter panels. I would us brazing rod or melt some wheel weights to fill in the imperfections of such patches. I know that metalsmithing is very time consuming and a dieing art yet less body filler that we all have to use for the final result for daily drivers. Yet this is a first gen"Camaro". You are right in your comment. Yet im glad that Dan is showing us how to deal with the tweaking of non factory US steel. 👌

@MarkD-nd9lg
@MarkD-nd9lg 6 месяцев назад
Hood alignment tip: Bolt the hood to the hinges (hinge springs removed), front and back bolts not tight, needing a few turns to tighten. Remove fresh air cowel panel, close hood. Shift the hood for desired gap clearance (pry, shove, etc) and use a combo wrench to tighten rear hinge bolts by accessing where cowel fresh air panel goes. It’s a little tricky but doable. Once back bolts are tight then open hood and tighten front bolts replace springs. Perfect alignment without risk of chipping edges if the car is painted and the engine is in.

I occasionally watch Peterson Restorations. He rebuilds Mustangs. Some rusted skeletons aren't much more than a vin #. He often uses lots of replacement panels. He always has to adjust panels because they are never exactly like the original ones. You probably should have cut the quarter by the deck lid in the middle of the lowest point of the dish, or curve. It's easier to flatten out the bottom of the dish and make it look good. When you cut the high spot, the side by the deck lid is where it's supposed to be, but the other side needs to be lower so that it rises to the high point.

Ditch the aftermarket deck, you'll never bend that to get a sharper line without trashing the back skin section. A small amount of body work is worth it and besides you have to keep at least one orig. panel on that project. Side note , I'd be pissed these panels were that far off, just me but I would have been leaning on them for replacements. I get it aftermarket is a/mark and I was in autobody but the diff in width on the left 1/4 , no way. I thought you said they were from a decent co. maybe I didn't recall. Rock On

I’m don’t know about Canada, in the USA Camaro had wide ovals front and rear and the rears were changed at the track for either street or race slicks. Then changed and driven back home. Yes I’m stuck in the 70s.

Man this thing has been a wicked series. You gonna paint it gloss? Maybe Raptor liner it. Really piss off the "purest"

The car looks great! Nice job on the sheet metal adjustments. Run the wheels you want. It's your car.

I had the same kind of problem with the patch panels I bought for my 78 Van. I thought well if I have to resend them all to fit I might as well just make my own out of flat sheets. I resold the panels I bought.
