The master's sexism would be fine even by todays standards. He is the master, he's supposed to make you feel anger or something like that. It's just how the master is.

I love Russell's twist on the Master. We always thought he was hell bent on staying alive, but it turned out he was hell bent on beating the Doctor (and he'd stay alive for a hundred years if that's how long it'd take to beat him). If the Master dying meant the Master winning, then he'd die happily. Really great twist on the relationship between the two characters.

Calling Tom Ellis an “ugly mug” is a crime against humanity

On the point about the TARDIS only taking 20 seconds to refuel, The Doctor says that it's because the rift's been active and therefore it'll only take 20 seconds. This is because Utopia takes place directly after the events of the series one finale of Torchwood. I won't spoil it but the rift is certainly pretty active in that episode! Great review though either way :)

I always thought the Master watching Teletubbies on the TV was a nice reference to the Sea Devils where the Master watched the Clangers on TV as well.

One of the most underrated finale's ever in my opinion.

One thing I really enjoyed about these stories which is never explicitly explained is that when the Master turned the future humans into the Toclafane it was likely him that created the blip that was interpreted as 'Utopia'. Meaning the entire story was cyclical by nature. I love it when Doctor who explores intricate time related concepts especially when it is done so subtly.

In three minutes Jacobi became my favourite Master, and in 45 minutes Utopia became my favourite episode.

Utopia is so clearly the first part in this three parter... Leaving the cliffhanger out of it, it connects with the Toclafane later on as well as the obvious connection of the Master

The concept of the title sequence even just carrying on as normal with no intro sequence but with jack holding on the entire time is maybe the most creative thing I may have heard ever

The face of boe comment isn't the only evidence that he is jack. With matt smith's era, that blue guy got a vortex manipulator "fresh off the wrist of a handsome time agent". This is jack. It also explains why he's the face of boe now, as the headless monks are the ones who got the vortex manipulator, so they obviously decapitated him. But of course, it's not a regular decapitation, because it's the headless monks. So Jack turns into the face of boe.

A very nitpicky point but twice during the episode they mention that everyone in Japan was killed, then the scene where everyone is chanting "doctor" THEY SHOW PEOPLE CHANTING IN SHIBUYA!!!

Did Harry just call Tom Ellis ugly at 18:50? This is blasphemy

The best thing about old new who is that the acting was actually good and the companions actually did something and made the viewer feel like that they actually helped the plot progress unlike a certain series where the companions are just there because they probably wrote the story with the doctor only and then thought "SHIT WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING FOR THE COMPANIONS " and then they added them in the background and made them have a few lines

18:50 ugly mug? That's Tom Ellis, Lucifer himself, he is a gorgeous man and you will recognize it.

To be honest, "The sky is made of diamonds" is one of the strongest line of all three of these episodes

The concepts of the universe fading into nothingness, humanity's last hope actually being a lie and there being no hope, then humanity regressing into such nightmares just as an attempt to stay alive are all some of the best and most horrifying concepts this show has ever had in my opinion. It's just too bad that these ideas are in these episodes and done so haphazardly to feel more like just dressing for The Master as opposed to being the story itself.

This series was created five years before The Avengers, so the Valiant isn't copying the helicarrier from the Avengers.

Utopia is my favourite doctor who story

Last time I was this early Jodie Whittaker was still as close to Doctor Who as only being friends with Tennant.

Okay 2 things, 1: I noticed while rewatching this episode on Netflix that they cut out Martha’s mum grabbing a gun and nearly shooting the master, only for the doctor to stop her. Only afterwards Lucy pops off 2: I didn’t notice as a kid that humans turned themselves into the toclofane which messed me up as it’s something I can see humans doing to themselves when all other options have run out 🙁

I literally rewinded to 23:48 multiple times while laughing because of just how hilariously absurd that scene of the doctor rising up whilst talking about the physic network, oh my god I loved these episodes as a kid, and as an adult I see how naff this show's more serious moments unintentionally ended up being, though tbh it just makes me enjoy the show even more, like in an ironic way btw what's that song that starts playing at 18:50 ? sounds so nice and chill

Some points: 1. If only we could gas the current government... 2. The guy who played Creet now has a huge acting role, as he was Bard's son Bain in the Hobbit. 3. John Simm is also one of the best things about Doctor Who as a whole. The DEFINITIVE Master, and I don't care how many people will shout "But, Derek Jacobi!" at me. 4. The Last of the Time Lords also has a flashback within another flashback, something I've never seen anywhere else. I quite LIKE it, and it don't really know why.

Valiant seemed more of a rip-off of Cloudbase from Gerry Anderson’s Captain Scarlet to me. Kudos to Martha, easily the most underrated companion in Nu-Who but I enjoyed that she was strong enough to choose to leave the Doctor whereas none of the others have.

OH MY GOD CAN SOMEONE PUT CAPTAIN JACK CLINGING TO THE TARDIS IN THE TITLE SEQUENCE, I NEED IT TO LIVE

I love the fact they mention this know a time lord when you see one thing they have however in the latest episode the doctor doesn’t recognise “O” is a time lord. Ik it’s a different writer but continuity man....

i loved it, would loved to have seen jacobi as the master for longer. he made me believe he was the master in 4 words yet jodie couldnt convince me she was the doctor in one season........... anyway loved this story.

4:22 Another thing about this is that The Doctor is just glad that a species he loves so much has managed to survive all the way to the end of everything, especially how at this point he's still recovering from the end of the Time War and knows that (despite how much more advanced they were) his own people weren't able to live until that point.

I love how it's December and he's still called Harry's Haunted House.

I had to come back to say I never realised something. If you listen to Yana monologing at the beginning, you hear a piece of music called "gallifrey, our childhood, our home." The only other time in the series you hear that is when you see the flashbacks about the doctor and master at the eye of harmony as children. The music told us the plot half an hour before it happened!

Looking forward to that 'Turn Left' review,. Easily one of my favourite episodes.

Just came a across this 3 years later. Don't know if you listened to the DVD commentaries but your note about having a scene of Captain Jack clinging to the side of the TARDIS through the time vortex was touched on -- Russel T. Davies said he wished they had put that on and that maybe in 10 years time they might re-release it with that added in CGI. Well gee, now RTD is coming back next year and they COULD do that if they really wanted to.

This brings back so many memories... I only started watching Doctor Who because of TBBT. One day I switched between channels on the tv in the late evening and saw they showed DW on one channel. I thought "If the peeople from TBBTlike it, it might be good" so I watched some of the episode. It was the part where the Doctor and his companions were standing at the edge of the airport with these necklaces on. Thank you for making me remember this amazing moment ^^

I was 6 years old when I saw Utopia. I barely understood the significance other than Yana being a time lord, but my dad, who’s grandma had raised him on Classic Who, shat himself with fear like “Nononono- DON’T BE HIM, DON’T BE HIM! FUCK!” When Yana was revealed to be the Master.

What they should've done with Tom is having him follow Martha out with the gun hidden in his back. Then he pulls it out and The Master taunts him because the Archangel Network controls every human to not be able to do something like pull the trigger of a gun on him. Tom struggles with it for a moment and then submits as the Master shoots him with the laser screwdriver.

"Utopia" is my all time favorite Doctor Who and Chan'Tho is my favorite non-companion character. Although "Heaven Sent" is a close second.

Because the last of the humans don’t actually travel to utopia due to the future kind woman messing it up and then they become tocolfane, the future kind are supposed to be a reason why it’s messed up and didn’t reach utopia. I think if they actually did reach utopia to find nothing, it would have been a lot more depressing because there’s just no hope for us in the future, but now there still could be because we don’t know whether utopia is the utopia we hoped it would be. Plus the chase sequences are needed to make it a lot more action packed as well at the end.

I think that I agree with the defence of the deus ex machina ending that Stubagful gave in his own review given how the damage the Master did would still being delt with by the time of series 18 or something.

It’s been a while, but I believe a while later in the Moffat Era, they referenced jack again, when someone gets a Vortex Manipulator from a group that cut people heads off. So would explain why the face of BoE is only a head.

Jack and the guards going for paradox machine, you think that just because Jack got into the Tardis the 3 Toclafane are dead. What is they're not and Jack got himself slaughtered just to come back to life, which ties in with us seeing him enter the Tardis breathing heavy.

Loved this trilogy when it was first released...wonder if nostalgia will be kind to this one?

People keep talking about the Helicarrier but no one says this: the Helicarrier would have shown up in the comics long before the movies, therefor the inspiration was likely still there Also it is not odd for New Who to reference other sci-fy as Rose herself compared the Doctor to Mr Spock in series one and later on Donna references Star Wars. For all we know the Master reads comics as much as he watches tv.

In regard to the Doctor “tuning into the network”, it’s kinda established that Time Lords have a form of psychic ability in their universe. It helps to not be _too_ analytical with this fact, and it’s most certainly _not_ something that’s only cropped up in New Who

My favorite thing about the Face of Bo reveal is that it could be this big reveal about Bo and Jakes ultimate fate... OR Jack has heard of the Doctor and The Face of Bo in his travels and is just messing with the Doctor. BOTH are perfectly in character, and it never being confirmed either way makes it all the better.

The Doctor's reaction to Jack has always confused me... I don't get why he's seemingly uncomfortable with his presence. The two never ended on bad terms, and he didn't even know about his Torchwood connection yet
