The people of Ula+lia are in Mongolia. They hand comb all their animals, and the process of spinning and dying is done by machine, however, they try to make their yarn with little machine processing as possible. Many cashmeres that we buy have been chemically processed to enhance its softness, this Mongolian Yarn is not like that I’ve been buying their yarn ever since they started seven years ago, I think. I have never been disappointed with it. You also can buy fiber if you want to spin your own and that is soft.

Hi Crystal, Thank you for doing the follow up video to buying the yarn. The hat is Beautiful!

If you make a video sharing the results of washing the hank before crocheting, I’ll watch! As a spinner, I wash hanks all the time to set the twist and “finish” the yarn. I also make hanks from coned wool that contains spinning oil. Washing the hanks is easy peasy and the yarn is much more pleasant to knit or crochet.

Thank you for the update. Looks promising. Some people like the lanolin that come in the yarn, because wool dries out your skin, when you use it. But I have never noticed the odor you did, so maybe at least on washing. 😂. The yarn really did “bloom” nicely. The hat is super cute. ❤🧶

I've been a backer of the Ula + Lia ("Herders to Home") Kickstarter campaigns for the past several years. The fellow who runs the Kickstarter campaigns (presumably the founder of the company) lives in Pennsylvania, but spends several months each year in Mongolia negotiating with herding cooperatives, spinning mills, etc. getting that year's yarn production set up Last year (2023) was the first year they offered "chunky" (Aran?/Bulky?) yarns, as well as the DK and fingering weights. I haven't washed my Ula + Lia yarn yet, but I have used it to crochet shawls (generally all yarns from that year's Kickstarter variety pack, plus whatever other hand-wash-only yarns I have in my stash. If I keep the shawls for a while before gifting them, I might wash the FOs. I suppose one could wash the hanks in individual mesh bags, though.

Thank you for the review and explaining the washing process. I'm glad it softened up for you! The only reason I prefer washing the final project as opposed to the hank is just because it saves a step if you're doing a wash and block anyways. It's also possible having the oil keeps it a bit more durable if you need to rip back a few times. But definitely nothing wrong to wash the hank, some notice the oil more than others. Salad spinners are great to spin some of the water out as well!
