Great tips! I have several families I can't find in The 1860 U S census. Strangest thing.

I found my family in the 1940 census by switching the father's name in the search. It was recorded with his first name as their surname.

In Ancestry,, Enter the address in the keyword search, and then fill in the city as where they lived. Don't enter a name. It helps to find all the folks who killed at that address. You will be amazed.
