I had a partial knee replacement six months after having an arthroscopy. The partial knee started to hurt and had the tight band sensation after five months. I spend two years with this fun-sucking pain (not bone on bone). I had knee nerve ablations that didn’t help and was on low dose narcotics from a pain clinic. The pain doctor referred me to a revision specialist and it revealed a loose lower partial component. I’m two months status post total knee revision. My partial knee was great while it lasted. I can’t believe my original surgeon pawned me off to the pain clinic, and the pain clinic doctor found my problem. Seek an answer, don’t suffer.

I'm really sorry to hear about the challenges you've faced with your knee replacement journey. It’s frustrating when you don’t get the answers you need right away. I’m glad you were eventually referred to a specialist who could address the issue. I hope your recovery from the total knee revision goes smoothly and that you find significant relief and improvement. Thank you for sharing your experience-it might help others in similar situations.

I got my knee replacement in Feb. 2023. On a recent return visit to the surgeon who did the surgery, he said I have "slippage" of the knee replacement. I have major swelling, pain, stiffness----and he sent me back to PT, which is not doing much of anything. I have to use a cane or walker to get around, and this entire year has been a total nightmare. Now, I refuse to have any doctor even touch my left knee for fear that it will be as stiff, swollen and painful as my right knee. Knee replacements don't work for everyone, but no one wants to tell you that.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties and pain following surgery. Unfortunately, you are right, not everyone has a positive outcome following knee replacement surgery. I hope you are able to find the help and relief you are looking for soon. Best wishes.

My wife had a total knee replacement 19 months ago. She had problems ever since. Severe pain, some swelling and now her knee is locking up. X-rays don't show anything out of the ordinary. Blood test ruled out infection. Her doctor said to get another opinion that maybe another doctor my see something he didn't. She did that, but all he did was view the X-rays and said everything looked normal. He did say, based on some swelling, she may be allergic to the metal in the knee. This test cost $500 and is not covered by insurance. We feel the locking of the knee, along with reduced motion (bending) that this may not be the problem. We would like your opinion on what could be causing her pain, limited motion and locking up. Visually, her replacement knee is larger than her the other. Thank you for your response.

I'm very sorry to hear about your wife's difficulties. Often symptoms of this nature are caused by excessive scar tissue formation in the knee, also called arthrofibrosis or "stiff knee" If the stiffness and locking up, as well as the pain and other symptoms, are significant enough some options are a manipulation under anesthesia to break up the tissue or arthroscopic surgery to surgically remove scar tissue. Of course, I can't say for sure this is what your wife is dealing with, but this is the first thing I thought of based on your description. I would recommend discussing this possibility with an orthopedic surgeon if you have not already.
@Mad4Clay
@Mad4Clay Год назад
I had this happen to me as well in 2009. Arthrofibrosis is what the cause was and I did have to be put back under for them to take care of it. I was thankful that is what it was as I got my range of motion.

Glad you were able to identify the sensitivity. Some occasional swelling and stiffness is not abnormal. Glad overall you are doing well.

Had a uni compartmental knee replacement 3 1/2 years ago. Knee has swelled up on occasions normally after long walks. But it’s suddenly become painful with lots of fluid on the joint just through normal activities ? 3 days now with no sign of reduction in pain or swelling. Distraught

I had a TKR 2 years ago - it was the biggest mistake of my life. I am in constant pain, unable to work and need a cane to walk any distance. The doctors say the x-rays look normal so I must just be "one of those patients who are never happy with their new knee". Before my surgery, the surgeon stated that 5% of patients weren't happy. The second surgeon I saw (post tkr) stated that number was actually 15% and the third surgeon claimed that 45% of TKR patients weren't happy with their new knee. 45% !!!!

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience with TKR. It sounds incredibly frustrating and disheartening, especially when the outcomes aren't matching what you were led to expect. It's tough when you're in pain and not getting the answers or support you need from your doctors. If you haven't already, it might be worth seeking out a specialist who focuses on pain management or revision surgery. I hope you find some relief and answers soon.

Im 8 weeks post TKR and im 52. I was doing well and after my last PT session, ive hurt so so bad in new areas. Ive been on ice for 3 days. Its a little better but not a lot. The pain is at the top of my shin and my right low knee. Im just miserable.

Sorry to hear this. You probably just did a little too much during your therapy session. This can happen. Continue to ice and rest up, and be sure to communicate the increased pain to your PT so they can modify your next session to be more tolerable and beneficial.

Hello, I'm a 63 year old women, who is not as active as I should be. I had a replacement in 2009 and went well for the most part except I did have scare tissue and had to go back under to have it fixed. A few months ago I started having pain just below my knee, I'm no longer able to do stairs, or get on stools. It's tender to the touch. I have since been checked for infection and loosening. No infection, and the images shows loosening. Sounds like you are saying I just have to live the rest of my years like this.
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Год назад
No. Pain is complex and many factors play a role. If the there is no infection or loosening of the replacement, this is a very good thing! The best thing you can do to address this pain and symptoms is to begin to develop a moderate intensity exercise or physical activity program. Developing muscle strength and controlling inflammation through the knee and body will help reduce pain and symptoms over time. Start easy and light, maybe just some daily walking and build up as you develop consistency and you hopefully start to see improvements with your knee. Hope this helps!

My ct scan showed loosening of my partial knee replacement. The surgeon said the only option is a total knee replacement. This doesn't make sense to me because it was only the medial compartment that had bone on bone. The rest of the knee is in perfect condition.
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists 5 месяцев назад
I unfortunately can not speak to the specifics of your knee, but it is common for a revision partial replacement to go to a total rather from a partial replacement to another partial replacement.

@@KneeReplacementTherapists This doesn't make sense. If the part becomes loose, why not go in and re-set the loose part?

I had my left knee replaced in 2020 because if arthritis even after my knee replacement it buckled after surgery ! 3 years later now my left knee is buckling again alot , its frausterating because I'm a cashier I'm on my feet 6 hours 5 days a week ! The buckling scares me because it makes me fall
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Год назад
Sorry to hear this... With knee buckling the first thing to often think about is strength of the muscles around the knee, especially the quadricep muscles of your thigh. Doing some strengthening exercises such as quad sets, seated knee extensions, sit to stands, step ups and more may be helpful over time to build strength and reduce the buckling... If the buckling or instability seems out of the ordinary you can also consult your surgeon or another orthopedist and they may recommend x-rays to double check the integrity of the knee replacement.

Suing the doctor is also an option ? A doctor can build failure into implant and so ensure you hv to spend more in future. A sure option if you consider how greed comes in. More consultations, revisions etc means more $$$ to doctor

Although I don't deny that malpractice does occur and some providers are driven by ulterior motives, I hope this is extremely rare and not the case.
