Had my knee replacement on 14/04. To 18/04 I feel great.very sleepy. I refused to take oxycodone or OXY norm. It made me feel spaced out. I'm walking 3x 270 steps and climbing stairs. I do have discomfort but no real pain. My old arthritic pain is gone. I am very optimistic for the future. I am 76 years old.🎉😊

I’m 50+, Just had double knee 08/28 - this is very informative. Therapy discontinued last week. Left bend 100-105, right bend 110-115. I continue exercises & was informed can go to health club for weights for extension & flexion. I was told to do exercises one leg at a time. I would love to get bend to 120 on both. 😊

Great information, wish I had found it when you first released it! I'm 7 month post TKR and this was the BEST thing I've ever done. Yes I still have stiffness after sitting or standing but I'm able to walk with no pain for the first time in years and while I don't do my PT regularly, it definitely helps with stiffness. I couldn't believe that I went into surgery at 7:30am, was out of bed walking at 10:30am and was home by 12pm. The nerve block pump lasted for 2.5 days! At my last outpatient PT appointment at 4 months after stretching, I was at 0 degrees and 136 degrees. It took a lot of determination to power through the pain doing the daily exercises at home but it was worth it. I still have some occasional pain and my leg swells up if I sit too long. Currently walking 1.5 to 3 miles a day, losing weight and looking forward to getting back to regular life. Thanks again for the info!

Just had a TKR 3 weeks ago and can’t wait to get out and do some walking. The only problem I had was that the surgery team tightened the tourniquet too tight and bruised a muscle on my other leg. It hurt worst than the results of the operation. Walking with a cane after I got lectured at the physical therapy clinic. Long slow road to recovery but well worth it after having pain in my knee area after an work related injury 29 years ago, Keep up the good work and enjoy your new freedom. Be safe

Had TKR on my second knee, and doing unbelievably great! 100 degree bend on day 6 after surgery, hardly any pain this time around. Was able to straighten leg right out without pain after surgery....only used walker for 2 days after surgery ...and then walking on my own without cane! My therapist on day 6 after surgery put me on the bicycle and i felt good...no pain...she said i just need one more therepy seesion in week 2...and no more. I m walking pretty good ...with slight limp ...feeling a little stiff and off balance. I do hav😂e swelling but am icing daily. I m on one type of pain killer right now but In all i cant believe how well i m doing this time around!! Now this was not the case with my first surgery on my other knee. I was in a lot of pain that first week and used walker for the entire week, but after that week i had quick recovery ...and did not need cane....my first knee surgery was 9 months ago and knee is doing very well🎉. After seeing this i m going to not overdo it as i dont want any problems and i want the inside of my knee to mend. .even though i dont have that pain...i will stop the pain killer and switch to basic tylenol tomorrow

Unfortunately I now know that I’ve grossly overdone where I should be in my recovery; I’m just hoping I can bring it back. Found the information on how the glutes impact knee pain very interesting and I’m going to seek out some exercises to strengthen this area. This might in fact be the reason my spinal surgery six years ago failed; hopefully it’ll help with the pain I still have in my back. Thank you!

I had bilateral TKR's 15 years ago. The 2 surgeries were 4 months apart, which meant I got to prehab the 2nd leg, while I was rehabbing the first leg. It made everything easier the second time around. For the first 2 weeks after discharge from the hospital, I went to a skilled nursing facility for 16 days for the first and 10 days for the second knee. This allowed me to have daily PT and it was covered by my Medicare. I am 15 years post op and i think the decision to have both knees done was one of the best decisions I made. I had tried everything else prior to the surgery and while the steroid injections gave me good relief, it was short lived. Definitely not a permanent result. I did not want to have both done together. It requires additional anesthesia and I was 70 years old. I am also a retired R.N. and knew patients who had done this and had a much longer and painful recovery. 4 months after my 2nd knee, my husband and I took a cruise of the British Isles and Normandy, and I did fine.

My TKR surgery went so well my surgeon wanted me to do a video clip for him. Unfortunately after having an exceptional first month I got Patellar Tendonitis. Basically no treatment for it, just time. The doctor said 2-3 months. My situation was about 6 months before I felt relief. The pain from the tendonitis was so much worse than the surgery. I truly did not have much surgical pain. I live in an RV so I climbed stairs the day after surgery. It’s all in making sure you have proper instructions on what to do. The worst part for me was trying to find a comfortable sleeping position. It was almost 18 months before I could say I was happy I did it. I don’t think it would have been that long without the Tendinitis issue.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy Thank you for your kind reply. The surgeon concerned is a professor and head of orthopedics at a well respected university hospital - so I imagine he knows what he is talking about. I didn't even know I had arthritis till I saw him! He says I am stage 4 - yet yesterday I negotiated up and down a total of 160 steps without any pain whatsoever, which is normal. I don't have any pain unless I do too much, but my knees are weak and I can only walk 20 minutes at a time before I have to rest for a while. In all, I can walk for about 2 hours. Is this unusual?

I had TKR in April, 2023 at HSS - considered the best orthopedic hospital in the US if not the world. Based on my experience, much of this info seems outdated. My incision was glued closed & I had no drains; when I removed the bandage 7 days post-op, it was thoroughly sealed. I’m sure internal tissues were a different story! But because I’m very active, I specifically requested the implant be glued in place to minimize the risk of them becoming dislodged. By the way: Studies have shown those flexion machines don’t provide better outcome, so they’ve been dispensed with. As this video advised, I was vertical within 24 hours - but there was effectively no weight bearing (much less walking). Everything was excruciating. Early PT was about moving my leg in ways to minimize pain, and how to leave the bed safely. Three bed exercises were recommended immediately and frequently: flexing toes forwards and back, pressing knee into mattress and clenching buttocks together. Extension was GREATLY emphasized over flexion - they want that leg at 0 degrees as soon as possible (within 2-3 weeks). My surgeon advised that flexion can be worked on over time, but to go gently with bending exercises: better not to inflame the joint just for the sake of rapid flexion - you’ll only lose those gains with the resulting inflammation anyway. She even said to tell my physical therapists to refrain from aggressive strategies (which advice one therapist took offense to). Extension is a different story - becauseg the longer the leg goes without full extension, the greater the chance it won’t reach it. Extension was monitored daily. They want you icing that leg completely straight with a towel under your ankle, toes pointed towards the ceiling. Your leg doesn’t want to do this, so I gave it no room to do otherwise: I wedged my leg between 2 towel rolls to keep it from turning, and made a “foot block” from a blanket to force the foot to stay vertical. As it became less sensitive, I wrapped both ankles together in a towel - and also slid both legs in a pillowcase to encourage extension. I reached zero degrees at 3 weeks. If I can do it you can too!!! Good luck!🌃

Did you have good pre surgery ROM? I had and managed 0 extension and 120 flexion from week 1 in both knees.
@jenniferlynn3537
@jenniferlynn3537 5 месяцев назад
@@mariancoffey8271 Unfortunately no - and that surely was a major factor in how quickly my range-of-motion gains were achieved. It’s been a year since my surgery and my range of motion is considered excellent. It’s not quite what it was before my knee deteriorated, but I’m still working on that. I should just say that I was more flexible than most to start with - so my expectations may exceed what’s physically possible. In my experience, many of these advisories about the perils of not making rapid flexion improvements are a bit over-the-top. One year out and I’m STILL noticing improvements in ROM, strength and ability - though obviously on a much more modest scale. I believe that as long as someone is persistent, physically ability WILL come - and I wish videos emphasized this more. I worry that people will hit 6 weeks and think, “Well, I guess this is as good as it’s gonna get,” - then slack off because they don’t realize they can still recover more.

And and some discomfort at the end of each day depending on how hard I worked. When I stopped doing rehab which I did for an extra 5 weeks on top of the initial 5 weeks I was at a degrees of 125 bendability. I don't know what I have now. Because I don't go to rehab anymore but it feels less I think.. Doctor keeps telling me that it's going to take up to a year but it will still get better. I will lose my stiffness . I've had my knee operated on 6 times now, had a scope to see what was wrong with it after a motorcycle accident when I was 15, ACL repair, debridement, ACL replacement, another debridement, then finally a full knee replacement. After the replacement, the surgeon told me there was more damage than they thought, so they had to do more work than they planned on. Now, 7 months after the surgery, there is still a lot of pain, loss of feeling in my heel, and a feeling of instability. The surgeon said there is some movement in the joint, but nothing to worry about. I am still doing physio to try to get back to normal, but I find it hard as I feel pain and insecurity when trying to push the knee. Me and 2 physio therapists feel there is too much play in the knee, but the surgeon says it's fine. So, do I go with his word and just push through all the doubt and pain, or do I go with the 2 physio therapists and maybe get a second opinion? I had the knee replaced, hoping I could get back to a normal life, but not so. Now I am doing less than before because of the pain and unstable feeling. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you are doing better now. It took me 6 months to convince my surgeon to do a CT scan on my knee replacement. He finally realizes the top part had not grown in and it had twisted around so far that the replacement knee cap was at the side of my leg. He operated again because he thought it may be infected. Once I was open the top replacement just fell out it was so loose, he had to dig the bottom one out. He put a spacer in impregnated with antibiotics and 1 month later that was all removed and a new replacement cemented in. I am now 3 months post the 3rd operation and my knee is swollen with fluid under the knee cap. All this has been going on for 11 months so if you still aren't happy get your doctor to check your knee.

Going in for my 3rd replacement, only 53 yo, 2nd full knee replacement on my left leg. Had my 1st 10 years ago, so not great, but had previous problems before the knee joint was replaced. Had cruciate & latteral ligament replaced aged 29 & had large tumour in the same leg (inside thigh) 2006. Had 6 weeks of radiation therapy so lots of trauma. Currently my knee has a bend of 75 degrees, so it's not great & struggling if I do long walks or play a round of golf, it's really sore & swelling always happens. Anyway I'm going to go for this 2nd replacement as only 53 & can't carry on like this. My main aim is range of motion & try & get 90-100 degrees, is this possible with the amount of trauma I've had??? Has anyone known or been through similar? Will the surgery be more difficult, larger cuts & deeper drilling in fib & thigh bone for the new joint.

I was walking 2 hours after the surgery with no pain. I may of taken a few Advil but that is all I did for what little pain I had. After a few weeks my knee is like new. The PT was the best thing I did as I found out how out of shape I have gotten. I have seen many total replacement patients in PT that are a horror story. So please always find an experienced board certified surgeon for any surgeries you may have. Since my knee surgery I have had another Carpal Tunnel syndrome surgery, by the same surgeon, with no pain. I should have done more research before I had my TKR. I live alone in a rural area and getting a reliable ride to therapy wasn't an option. I had therapy at home. That was a year ago. I was used to being fairly active and I overdid it a few times. A week before therapy was over my therapist decided I needed to concentrate on straightening. He had been focusing on the bend. After therapy was over I started looking at videos. I was frustrated and the surgeon wasn't helpful. He would just tell me it'll work out through the course of the year. At my 6-month appointment I questioned him about the stiffness just as I did at my earlier appointments. At a year I am still stiff. I can bend 120 degrees but every day I have to do a few stretches to get there. It is uncomfortable. I don't usually hold the stretches for more than 45 seconds. I rarely miss a day. I have been a bit aggressive. This is the first I've heard about just doing light stretches. I was very stiff one day so I went to the local med spa. I did two sessions of light therapy. I had read that it was good for inflammation and pain. I could tell the difference when I left. The next day was the loosest I have been since my TKR.

I understand how you feel about (t)his wealth of knowledge. I am a little over 3 months post surgery and all I got from my physical therapist was how many sets and reps of exercises to do with no explanation. There was no consultation to describes goals or expectancies. If I asked questions, I got vague answers. I did not understand the different pains and sensations I experienced and my doctor did not answer my questions. This video would have brought me comfort to understand what I my experience. As someone else, I was given a few exercises that did not change in my first four weeks of going to PT twice a week. I now understand how I was letting my quads know that I needed them to wake up as they healed and that i would not get a response for weeks. So, twice a week to MY PT for the first weeks was a waist of money - the exercises were no different than what I did at home. I felt like a Cash Cow and of course that wanted to add more visits. I really appreciate this information, opposed to someone obviously taking advantage of my ignorance and not appreciating when I question.

I had both knee done at the same time in 2014. My insurance approved me staying in the hospital for physical therapy because my wife was out of town. I’m happy they did both because I didn’t want two separate surgeries with anesthesia. It was a blessing as my knees have felt so much better since the surgery.

I had my TKR right knee five weeks ago. pain and nerve pain is horrible. Even oxycodone doesn’t help. Just makes me dizzy. Lyrica for nerve pain just makes sleep about an hour. I’ve kept ice on my knee 24/7. It is all that helps. My swelling is just inside where the trauma took place. I wish I had not had surgery at this point. I’m very depressed. Arthritis was awful but be very very sure you want to go through this awful pain because its becoming intolerable for me.

Hi. I've had my right hip replaced 6 years ago. In January 2023 I had my left knee replaced. In January 29th 2024 I had my right knee replaced. So the right knee healed faster and easier than the left knee. However..after truly enjoying a pain free right knee from about the third month it has suddenly started to hurt. It hurts from the top of the shin into my foot. I do the PT exercises given to me at the end of my PT sessions. I'm so bummed out!! I've listened to your month to month video but I don't exactly know what to do as the pain is in my right knee and my right hip has been replaced so not so sure about strengthening my gluts. I'm a 74 year old female. Can you help?

Watching this 1 week before mine. So excited to get going with this and back to normal. 53 yrs old. Thankfully, I have lost 30 lbs in the last year and had no idea I was going to need surgery. Thank you for all of these tips! Had no idea what to expect. My Dr answered my questions but this is very informative. I have bone on bone osteoarthritis. In May it was just aching and I was diagnosed. It is now Sept and I went in asking the Dr for surgery.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy thank you! I’m 3 weeks post op now, a little stiffness and pain occasionally. Walking now but it’s been slow. I feel so much better already. I do real estate photography and carry my gear up and down stairs everyday so I wanted to do the surgery during my down time. I didn’t feel like i could take a chance on not having it with my busy season coming soon. I do wish I had done some exercises to prepare for surgery such as legs and arms. Didn’t realize how important my arms were going to be. I’m off pain meds except sometimes when the up the ante at PT.

Doing the exercises faithfully before a TKR is highly recommended. I did all my exercises before my TKR and the transition was a lot easier. I walked out of the hospital with a walker and haven’t used it since. I highly recommend using a cold therapy machine and a heating pad to help ease the pain. Keep a record or use a pill box for your meds since you take different medications at different times. A good recliner that tilts back almost flat is a lifesaver and will be your sleeping place for a couple of weeks. Trust me I been there.

@@anthonyrettaliata7311 Thanks. I also forgot to mention I use a small 2” x 6” paint roller with a roller to massage the muscles on the leg and thigh. I also used a vinyl boot to keep the incision area dry even thou they used a waterproof bandage on the incision. Elevate your toes higher than your eyes to circulate the blood in your legs area 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes helps also. I use a footstool and rest my calves on it. The first 4-5 weeks suck but in the long run it worth it. Your sleep patterns will be tough also. Good Luck and hope all works out well for you.

I had a TKR 10/31/23 Because of a ACL injury 20 years ago I had screws that got covered in bone. The doctor tried to sneak the implant past but accidentally cracked my tibia plateau. I didn’t get to be able to much PT until I got cleared from the break. It is now week 9 and I am trying hard with PT and home exercises to get my motion and strength back. I am assuming my recovery may go beyond a year! Any comments?

Full knee replacement in August 2023, September 2023 went back in to put a smaller spacer in and cleaned scar tissue out, October 2023 manipulation under anesthesia. Physical therapy initially 2x a week then 3x week and then 5x a week. Here we are now April 2023 I can drive a car, bend at 95’ and straightening to 9’. Can’t run because I’m off balance. When at PT can get knee flat and bend to 120. Once I leave about 30 minutes later knee “freezes” up, feels very tight above knee. No pain just major stiffness. Can bike. Using a Dynasplint for straightening. and bending. Graston at PT lots of stretching, biking. I do lots of passive stretching daily and exercises prescribed by PT. What can I do to get rid of this scar tissue? My surgeon says I can have a cleaning of the scar tissue removed for the third time. 😒 PT says if I have more surgery we are going to creat more scar tissue and may go backwards again. What are your suggestions? I ice and heat daily too. At PT now 2x a week.

@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy Год назад
Hey Moonlight, It's heartbreaking to hear that you cannot bend your knee much after 6 months.🥺 In order to conclude what the problem is it would require a specialist. We would recommend a Virtual Consultation so that you may discuss your situation with Dr. David. If you are interested in more information on booking a consultation please check out this link: Virtual visit link www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/ Around the 5th, 6th and 7th month is the time to address the root problem that set up the knee arthritis and led you to the point of knee replacement. The root problem is usually a muscle imbalance that is brought on by the quad muscle being relatively stronger than the glute muscles. To address the issue you want to primarily focus on strengthening the butt muscle which will assist in taking the pressure off the knees. We have 2 videos that have exercises that focus on the glute muscles to help improve the muscle imbalance. “Top 5 Glute Muscle Exercises For Knee Pain” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NXdCjT2QtJA.html “Top 6 Standing Glute Exercises To Help Knee Pain” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jD7IRBfJ-mM.html To help with your back pain we do have a playlist that we have compiled with additional information and exercises that should be able to ease your back pain: “Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1mYxifSEM8bNacVpyTmc3_Ys We hope you can experience some relief soon! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care! 🧡
