I’ve been waiting for this streaming charts! I love Percy Jackson and I’m thrilled to see it going so well. Disney has absolutely struggled with live action shows that aren’t Marvel or Star Wars, so this is great to see.

I imagine something that didn’t help with the relationship between Scott Stuber and Netflix has been his failure to bring Netflix a Best Picture Oscar win. For years, I have been saying that the one thing I believe Netflix thinks would fully legitimize themselves in Hollywood would be a Best Picture Oscar win, and despite the efforts of Stuber, Netflix has not been able to win Best Picture for 5 straight years in a row, they’ve lost the “first streamer to win Best Picture” crown to Apple, and it’s looking very unlikely that will change this year (hell, Apple’s in a better position to win their second Best Picture Oscar than Netflix is to win their first).

I had stayed with Netflix even after other major streaming services began taking movies away because it still had a DVD service. Eventually almost every film would become available, even if it was through the mail. Now that the DVDs are gone, it is good to see that more big movies are again being licensed to Netflix. I have started rotating subscriptions through other streaming services, but so far, not Netflix since they usually have something interesting to watch.

Interesting that you mentioned that Mario did well on Peacock and even better on Netflix b/c in places like Japan, Amazon snapped up Mario to stream on their service. I find it fascinating that the streaming wars isn't just being waged in the US (though maybe it's the main theater of war), but places like India, Brazil also have huge populations that may tilt the overall favor to other services. Super curious where this all leads.

I’ve wondered this for a while - what determines what an original streaming show is? I notice that the Great British Baking Show / Bake Off appears in the Original Streaming Series chart as a Netflix original show, but it isn’t. It’s made by a UK terrestrial TV channel, and I assume is distributed by Netflix in the US. So why is it not classed as a Library Streaming Show, since those are shows taken from other original broadcasters?

The streaming services are all just trash. At most there is 1-2 movies/shows worth watching. Its bad value. Its odd to say, but cable is a far better value and I just have 1 entity to pay. Especially since I love sports, cable just makes more sense. Its still flawed, i'd rather just pay for a few channels - ESPN, TNT, AMC, BBCAmerica.....and that's it

Getting WWE to Netflix might make them more attractive to me, but if they block sharing I will still cancel my account. See the whole remastering thing is a reason I appreciate streaming instead of physical media. I have a DVD collection and it all looks like butts on a 4K TV. I have blurays from before 4K and they’re starting to look long in the tooth but the streaming stuff, in theory, grows with your TV. Now, in practice it may well be that they try to charge you extra for the high res or that they pull stuff for no reason, that’s not good. But the fact remains that streaming, done well, is the best experience, we just need to push the streamers to do it well

So weird that Amazon has failed to understand their streaming model so aggressively. Apple gets it, they make good stuff and that good stuff is there to promote their brand, not to make money, so having all their good stuff in cinemas is nothing but win. Amazon just churns out trash and buries it all in everything else so it all dies on the vine

Mark my words, the next phase of the streaming wars, and probably a new permanent fixture is going to be a hybrid between the streaming model, and cable model. I think the ad sported tears will stay, and will be part of every tier subscriptions, and the ad free tiers will sky rocket in cost to compensate the company for the money lost from those people not wanting ads. I think the ad free tiers will go up to $30 or $40

Don't forget in order to get movies into theatres Netflix would need to start advertising their films which could add another $100 million, if not more, to the costs. Netflix does not advertise its film so it does not incur this cost currently. Given the state that the box office is in at the moment, with very few films actually making their budgets back during the theatrical window, I don't see this as a viable reason for Netflix to do it since they can't rely on ancillary profit after the film lands on Netflix since they don't sell physical media or send their films to other streaming studios or even do PVOD.
@DanMurrellMovies

I understand that theatrical marketing may be different but Netflix absolutely does market their films, just as other studios do. Some more than others, but still. And many have said and shown that a theatrical release can boost interest on streaming.
@MysteryMii
@MysteryMii 8 месяцев назад
@@DanMurrellMoviesThen again it seems that the most marketing Netflix puts into the vast majority of their releases is just a trailer and a poster and that’s it. It’s only the things that are already popular or Netflix thinks will be popular that they seem to try to put more effort into marketing, but even that pales in comparison to what the average theatrical release gets.

Honestly I think Netflix overpaid for WWE. WWE at most only ever got 2.5 million viewers on their best show (Smackdown). While Raw on averaged 1.7 million viewers. WWE legit was getting beating by Hallmark last year in the cable ratings. I might be mistaken, but heard Fox paid half the amount of Netflix for Smackdown, and the show still failed to meet their expectations.

In the first 9 months of 2023 for every 3 cable/satellite TV subscribers who cut the cord only 1 switched to an OTT live TV service like RU-vid TV or Sling. Comcast lost 2 million subscribers in both 2022 and 2023. So the paid linear TV bundle is collapsing fast and the legacy media companies need to decide whether they transition to the Sony model of making shows and films to other companies streaming services or continue with their own. Netflix is continuing to grow and is picking up steam even in the US market especially as smaller legacy media companies like Paramount and WBD start licencing content again. The next 5 years are going to be the most transformative in the film and TV industry since the invention of the TV itself!

The most watched streaming movies chart since 2020 is a perfect case for why Disney has struggled as of late. Family films absolutely dominate streaming because kids rewatch movies more than anyone and families benefit from being able to watch at home. Going to the theaters can be a challenge both financially and practically for families with younger kids Entire top 10 are family films except Glass Onion, which as you pointed out, did not spend much time in theaters

@joker-sh5hv
@joker-sh5hv 8 месяцев назад
@@BaithNa the Netflix deal isn’t a huge increase when you consider that the payment is for far more than a single show. My point is that last year wwe sources were expecting over 200 mil a year for raw alone. They are getting around that for EVERYthing the make. So when you first see it it looks like a huge deal, in reality it’s a decent deal. That’s why the stock price shot up, and then immediately started going down and settling as people understood what the deal was. It’s not wwe’s fault, it’s literally just economic situation of the industry that caused them not to get what they projected. This is the best deal they could make given the circumstances. But my point was that Dan said it was because they wanted to be global-- but they already are global.

Netflix gets a partnership with a huge brand and exclusivity for part of that brand domestically and even more worldwide. If they drive even a few million subscribers, that’s a positive. If they keep more on the service, that’s a positive. If WWE extends their influence and reach, that’s a positive in that Netflix proves they’re a legitimate home for live sport entertainment, which maybe wins them more contracts. There’s way more upside to this deal than you’re giving it credit for.

@DanMurrellMovies
@DanMurrellMovies 8 месяцев назад
I doubt it was contractually agreed that Road House would be theatrical. Liman made the agreement with MGM, but things changed. He said in the full letter that Amazon expressed interest in theatrical releases, which kept him happy until they revealed that they weren’t. The violation is more of a handshake agreement than a binding legal obligation. It’s why more directors are seeking contractual agreements regarding release when they weren’t before.

You stick a film in theatres and that's $100 million on top of production budget for advertising/marketing/distribution. You just did a video on the DCEU and how theatrical alone wasn't reliable to make money. Netflix doesn't want to licence it's content it wants to be a one stop show for it's films and shows and the fact Netflix is making billions while legacy media is losing billions in streaming shows Netflix's strategy is working. Then there is the fact theatrical attendance has been shrinking for decades with constant ticket price increases the only thing keeping yearly revenue flattish.

@@DanMurrellMovies Sure but their is a difference in spending for example $100 million a month to market Netflix than a single film.

Netflix has specific marketing budgets attached to specific movies already, that's what I'm saying. They're not just marketing the service. So to market to a theatrical audience wouldn't be a completely new investment where none exists. You could say that a theatrical run would be, in a way, marketing for the release on Netflix.

Saltburn did get a wide theatrical release, and then an Amazon run that boosted visibility of the film. I think that's the system working in an ideal way for everyone.

And D+ especially once it has fully integrated Hulu and all its content which non-US D+ subscribers have been enjoying having access to through the 'Star' Tile for the last 2yrs. Also has a huge library of animated movies & shows which are consistently in the Top 10 of streaming charts!

Confused as to how Bake-Off can be a Netflix Original series when it’s just the British show that airs on Channel 4? Is it only considered a ‘library series’ if it’s already over?

I've been a lifelong fan of pro wrestling but ever since I got rid of cable I have not kept up with any of WWE's weekly TV shows in years, I usually just watch recaps on RU-vid, and I was considering canceling my Netflix subscription soon cuz all my favorite shows like Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy & Cobra Kai are ending soon but moving Monday Night RAW to Netflix is an enormous deal for the world of live broadcast entertainment cuz Netflix has been experimenting with live content for a while and Monday Night RAW has been a staple of of the USA Network's weekly broadcast schedule for YEARS and like Dan said, it draws MILLIONS of viewers every Monday, and WWE currently is on somewhat of a renaissance having the most successful year they've ever had by every metric (creatively and financially) in 2023 so moving their flagship weekly show to a much more commercially accessible platform can only be a good thing increase their audience worldwide

Doug Liman the 'great' director who popularised shaky cam action scenes and gave the world Chaos Walking and Locked Down such amazing films /s Old man yells at cloud vibes from a man long past his prime!
@DanMurrellMovies

Paul Greengrass popularized shaky cam action with his Bourne sequel, not Doug Liman with the original. He’s also the director behind Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers, and The Bourne Identity. You can make any director sound bad when you pick their worst films as examples.

@@DanMurrellMovies First point your right I was thinking of the terrible quick cut fight scene ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GGuveoxVXaI.htmlsi=C_BkLvdwedQpWexV&t=16 ) not the shaky cam. Second point I picked the two films he has directed in the last 6 years. People get older and ability isn't always a constant. I'm sure every director wishes they could maintain their ability like Scorsese has but few can. Maybe this road house film be great but a remake of a good bad film is an iffy prospect to begin with.
