honestly the show is what got me into scott pilgrim and ive pretty much read/watched/played everything to do with scott pilgrim, i like how the anime explored the characters so much more. i dont understand how anyone could dislike it, its JUST as good as everything else in the scott pilgrim "universe". i love this series so much :3

Considering how meta and self aware Scott Pilgrim is, pulling the "this is a remake/retelling SURPRISE TIME TRAVEL MULTIVERSE SEQUEL" sounds a bit more on brand here than it did in, say, Final Fantasy VII Remake

Honestly, I am a Scott Pilgrim fan, but when I watched the anime and saw that Scott disappeared for a few episodes I got sorta pissed and disappointed, yet it was cool to see them make an anime out of it which I was super excited for-

It's been in development for a long time, but they recently released some merch and a teaser trailer, so they're getting closer! It's so niche I rarely see anyone talk about it, but I'm very excited because the animation quality looks like it's improved exponentially since their first teasers

Honestly I really liked the show despite some of it's issues, it's a great edition to the universe. But it would have been stronger as a surprise second season. The original story deserves to be animated so badly, but since this was made first a lot of people watched it without much prior knowledge of Scott Pilgrim. I don't think you can properly enjoy this story without being very familiar with the universe already, so it does make me a little sad.

As someone who has no experience with anything Scott Pilgrim related until this, it was super entertaining

A lot of people are calling this the next He-Man but here’s the difference. Kevin Smith literally lied to fans about the series and even defamed and berated an animation focused RU-vid channel called Clownfish over the claims that He-Man was going to get killed off early on and be replaced by Teela which actually turned out to be true. On the other hand Bryan Lee O’Malley was very open on the fact that this wasn’t going to be a direct adaptation of the original comics, I mean he even called the show “Scott Pilgrim TAKES OFF. He also most likely did not have control of the marketing which is what caused this entire scandal and if he did he obviously didn’t want to spoil the twist which is really the show’s main plot device. Anyways if you really like the Scott Pilgrim series the show is really really good and isn’t even a remake or a reboot of the original series but instead is more like an Evangelion Rebuild-esque sequel.

It's funny to me. I personally enjoyed the show a lot despite also loving the comics. The comics are so much about not dwelling on the past and moving on to become better (the 7 exes not getting over Ramona. Ramona running from her past instead of fixing things. Scott refusing to grow up and becoming a functional adult etc etc) and that's why I find it hilarious that comic Fans hate the show. The anime fixed many things like giving Ramona more time and such to show her personality and character. (They did that in the comic too but because the end of the movie had to be made up since the 6th book wasnt written at the time, many people think Ramona is shallow and just a "manic pixie dream girl") or giving the exes more screen time too etc. So it's funny to me that Fans of a Story about moving on from the past cant move on from the comics

I can understand why they condensed this to the whole story of the series is put into one season. Netflix being all canceling shows regardless of how good they’re doing does put that fear into a very big perspective especially animation.

Fun fact. The comic creator confirmed this and each older versions are alternate timelines. He said comic book Scott and Remona don't show up at all in this because they overcame all thier issues and problems at the end of the comics which made them perfectly together after the end of the comics. Basically they were the married ones but never divorced or any relationship issues at all with thier future together.

Honestly for me, I just blame the marketing. They marketed it as it was going to be an adaption of the comic and it wasn’t. But honestly, once I got over the initial shock, I was able to enjoy it for what it was. However it did make me a little sad. I wanted to show this adaption to my friend who has never read the comic but I feel like he wouldn’t enjoy it. I feel like I only enjoyed it because I liked the characters due to the comics.

I loved how this show really explored the characters of the evil exes. Especially Matthew Patel and Roxie! It’s a shame the twins didn’t have that much screen time despite being so important, though.

I’m really happy that they went down the route of following Ramona, it was so satisfying to see her actually solve things with her ex’s herself, rather than have Scott fight them. It was interesting that they explored how Ramona kind of fucked up too and it’s better that she fix it.

As someone who wanted to watch this as my first introduction to Scott Pilgrim. It took me four episodes to realize it wasn't the original story (still enjoyed them regardless). HOWEVER, After watching the movie and reading the volumes. I went back into it and loved it. It's like a New Game + Alternate Route (Secret Boss Unlocked) version of the story. I like it a lot. Though hopefully maybe we can get that true adaptation later.

I was initially disappointed because I really wanted the Nega Scott arc to get animated, and I was really taken aback by the funeral scene. That said, after I got over it, and gave the show space to be what it was, I really enjoyed it and how it gave side characters more space to stretch out.

Honestly I think this is more due to the issues of shows/games that have done this recently that have been pretty bad in the direction they go. Take Masters of the Universe Revelations and The Last of Us Part 2, where the marketing was heavily misleading and then became an insult to the fans of the IP. Even if Takes Off was good, the misleading marketing felt like it was gonna follow the trend of “bait and switch” that in past instances would have led to a worse product, and people are sick of that tactic

I heard that there were some people who liked the anime's Japanese dub better than the English version--while the original version just brought back the main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, the Japanese version brought some pretty famous Japanese voice actors to dub the main characters.

Show turned out to be great in its own right, but I just wish the marketing had been more clear about this being a re-imagine rather than a 1:1 remake as the trailers led many to believe.

FINALLY! Someone addresses the weird pacing issues! Reading/Watching other reviews made me wonder if I watched the same show as everyone else. I would have given up on the series if they hadn't hooked me by "killing" Scott in the first episode. I'm glad they pulled it together toward the end of the series.

for me, Takes Off felt like a wish granted for the fans and THEN SOME. The new perspectives, character dynamics and stories were a breath of fresh air. Flipping the story on Ramona, to make her go through her own journey of forgiveness and reconciliation, is a topic that a lot of people these days desperately need. Forgiveness makes friends. Resentment and anger makes us lonely.

I completely agree with everything you’ve said about this. From a more in-depth look at Ramona’s past, the closure for her and her exes, the visuals, and the break away from the same story we all know. The Lucas Lee fight with the skateboard is incredibly animated and honestly was my favorite part of the whole series. You can tell they put a lot of time in it, and I can’t help but appreciate that.

Once you get past the dissapointment of it not being a 1-to-1 adaptation, it's pretty great. It still acknowledges the original story and even makes it feel like a continuation of the original.

I loved it. It felt like the same story coming from a 30-year-old's perspective. O'Mally is no longer living in the moment like he was when he was in his 20s and with this version of the story he takes it from a more mature point of view. He starts asking questions people in their 30s ask. Where is this going? What have I done with my life? Was this a mistake? Was that? Was she a mistake? If I could go back and do it all again, would I? If I could go back in time and slap my younger self and say "don't do that one thing!" How much better would my life be? Seeing it from this perspective makes me not want to see a season 2, but it really makes me want him to try to tell another Scott and Ramona story when he's in his 40s... his 50s... even his 60s.

I love the direction the show went in, and from what I've seen, most fans of the show do too. I love how much focus was on Ramona, the development she had, and how much it fleshed out her exes. Julie is also the best in this. Plus the humor, animation, and music are all incredible. What they did with this series was unexpected, yes, but it's a welcome surprise as far as I'm concerned.

The creators have said that each iteration of the Scott Pikgrim story is its own alternate universe. As someone with not much knowledge of Scott Pilgrim except for the basic plot of the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. The art style is just something to drool over cause its just so beautiful and I had no issues with the storyline. The show is a solid 9.5/10 and i would absolutely recommend it if you havent already watched it ❤

I really wish they marketed the different direction their going with as to not mess with expectations. Expectations hurt both sides if not managed

I can see where people say this is a bait and switch though. If they called the series "Ramona Flowers Takes Off" that would have been fine. Also, Knives telling Scott "I'm glad you died" is just psychopath behavior. That's a horrible thing to tell someone you claimed to like. Holy hell, I'd be looking over my shoulder when that girl's around.

I found it fun. If I wanted to see the og story it's on Netflix so I could anytime It was able to expand on the cast and give them a lot of development on top of removing that gross child dating plotline at the exact same time. Only negative I have is how strange the ending was with remona and Scott being old and Scott taking things too seriously while remona was very detached but it was a fun cartoon

As a fan of the original story, i think this improves sone issues i had, i always wanted to know and see more on the ex's, this did just that, which was perfect, i liked it alot

tbh I didn't like how Christ Chan had the audacity to ping him on twitter but I do like Saber's thoughts on the anime.

The only thing I hate about this show is the fact Ramona works at the Netflix DVD Rentals, which makes me pissed because they released this in the same year the rentals were SHUT DOWN.

I love that the adaptation went in a different direction. There's like 3 other versions of the story we could experience (video game, books, and movie). The closure and fleshing out of the Wvil Exs was a good touch, side characters, and Future Scott was a good touch for the ending

To me it didn’t. I was open to the fact that Ramona was gonna be the protagonist of this anime series. And not only did they improve her so much compared to the movie, but they also let her have emotion in her feelings and how she acts and speaks which is cool. Too me, it just gave Ramona more character as well as some of the evil ex’s and some other side characters like Young Neil and Knives for example.

I'm tired of the bait and switch, and I don't have issues with remakes or reboots. I'm tired of getting promised faithful adaptations and then getting a middle finger instead, and I'm not giving money to the companies who enable it

I don't mind a new twist on it but really feel that that should have been told to people because marketing very much made this look like a straight adaptation. Looking forward to seeing it because I like Scott Pilgrim and seeing more about the EXs and Ramona would be nice considering how the original story seems to indicate that Ramona herself had caused quite a bit of the issues with the EXs in the first place.

I feel like they missed out on a really interesting opportunity on the episode where they were jumping through different movies. They should've taken the chance to do the characters in different art styles (adapted to the movies) or maybe even have them turn into their live action versions for a second or something.

This was a good show, and honestly an alternate timeline story really fits the universe. I get that it wasn't what some fans wanted but it was excellent and I wouldn't mind getting a continuation

I thought it was fantastic. I loved they explored Ro and we really got to know her more, She even got character growth which I loved. And that old Scott really didn’t learn his lesson and he was still a jerk. But his past self actually gets a chance to be a better person. Idk I just loved the themes and appreciated it.

Hardcore fan here. It was amazing. It felt like it was subverted expectations done right, which never happens. It was practically a sequel. I really dug it

I was disappointed at first but after episode 3, i was honestly glad that it wasn't just a direct remake. I'm glad that it wasn't just ramona switched with scott where she has to beat up the exes 1 by 1, instead it's her having closure with each of them. I love Scott Pilgrim's story, and I also love this story. We all could use more things to love

I enjoyed Takes Off, my major complaints were that it dragged a bit starting at the Todd episode, and that they should have brought Scott back in an episode or two sooner, as I didn't care about their relationship by that point cuz he was gone from the show so long that it wasn't the focus anymore. The story mix up was fun, just wasn't executed flawlessly

It's worth noting, people aren't unhappy with adaptions these days. They're unhappy with BADLY DONE adaptions. I haven't seen this show and I am not a comic fan, so I can't comment on it, but in general people want good adaptions. GOOD adaptions. And that basically never happens now. People are terrified to see their beloved franchises up next for the grinder to ruin them next.

short answer: yes. long answer: it was just a ramona spin-off and if they would've marketed as such I would have nothing against the show because it is pretty good at what it does, but we got scott pilgrim without scott pilgrim pretty much.

As someone who read the comics, I did have a hard time at first. I just found myself watching it thinking, "I wish this was more of a 1 to 1 adaptation." and even after I got over that and got to the point of enjoying it it still left a sour taste in my mouth. But with the amazing animation, and music I was able to get enjoyment out of the series. It kinda felt like a AU Fanfiction tbh.

Personally, as a scott pilgrim megafan, i absolutely enjoyed the direction the anime went. Do I think the advertising was misaimed and manipulative, yes, but I was very satisfied with what we got, even if a comic adaptation would have been amazing.

I loved how it fleshed out the exes, and gave Ramona more to do than just be fought over. Also it proves my point that the worst thing about Scott Pilgrim is Scott Pilgrim.

I was reminded of Utena. Growing up with that franchise got me used to changing adaptations. The Manga was one thing, the anime was another, and the movie was different from the other two. With Scott Pilgrim and how different the books are vs the movie vs the video game, I wasn't mad or anything about an entirely different take for the series. If anything, I was excited to experience another SP for the first time not knowing where it was going to go. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

It really was a glorified fan-fiction. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it didn't have the Scott Pilgrim license. I will say, I loved the animation, the music and the voice acting. My biggest complaints are the story, departure from the source material, no Scott for 90% and the lip flap syncing was absolutely terrible at times. Also didn't help that the trailers were very misleading, literally making it look like either an accurate book adaptation or at least an animated version of the movie. It's fine to go in an alternate way, but can we get a faithful animated adaptation first please?

Speaking honestly... I had the exact same feeling as Sabersparks friend. Where the disappointment soured what is actually a pretty good show. You have to remember that a lot of fans form the comics have wanted an animated adaptation from the beginning. Like we accepted the Live Action film as being cool, but it's basically the "speed run" version of the story. It is running 200km an hour and gives no time to breath... it does it well, but again it's like a sliver of the actual story. So when the creator announced that they were making a Scott Pilgrim anime, you bet the fans who have been there since the beginning, they were pumped. An actual animated adaptation. Now Bryan Lee O'Malley did comment that the animated series was going to be it's "own thing" but you honestly never know what that means in this day and age. It could just mean that they are adapting it but it's going to still have things missing, or it's going to change some part of the story... but overall the impression given was that it was still going to be some form of an adaptation of the graphic novels. All the trailers and media also implied this as well, as we saw a lot of the first book adapted in that first episode. I went in blind, and I tell you, the end of the first episode was a huge punch to the gut, and the second episode didn't help. I had to stop watching at that point for the night. I was pretty off put, even if I loved the animation and music. I did finish the entire series, and even if I loved parts of it, my overall enjoyment was still soured by the misdirect and the disappointment. Maybe one day I'll be able to enjoy it more, but for now I'm fine with a one time watch. It also just stings that this means we will probably never ever see the books get fully adapted, and to me that will always be a shame, since there's so much that people are missing out on.

As a big Scott Pilgrim fan, I will never be convinced that the bait and switch was a good idea. I rarely get excited for things these days and realising that all the things I was hoping to see from the comics wasn't going to be in the anime made me lose all enthusiasm and I stopped after episode 2. Had they been honest about the nature of the show, I would've been excited for that instead and I probably would've watched it all by now. Sure, I probably would've still been a little disappointed that we weren't getting a straight adaptation, but at least I would've known what I was getting into.

I like the show, but I wished they followed the comic cause it had a point of coming to terms with yourself, accepting past mistakes and able to carry on the burden to be better. Plus a lot more content that was removed.

I read some of the comics as a kid cos they had them in the library, it’s been a little while so I don’t remember them like vividly but I’m a hardcore fan of the movie, and I loved this adaptation, it was completely different from what I thought it was going to be and we got a lot more focus on other characters that have been glossed over in the other versions

If you knew the creator Bryan O Malley long enough or at least with his work... this is EXACTLY what he would do or allow. He wants his IP to be tightly contained and I respect it. A lot of creators that has franchises usually have it blow up so huge that it's nearly impossible for them to even control it anymore. For me to keep it in a tight grip like that is fine to me. If Scott Pilgrim doesn't get a season 2 you won't see me rioting over it. I'm just glad Scott Pilgrim got an animation adaption. Lol

Every person complaining about marketing are outing themselves. Rewatch the trailers and teaser and it was clear they were not doing a 1:1 adaptation. Envy in black coming out of a funeral car, Matthew Patel alive and in new clothes surrounded by paparazzi, Roxy and Ramona in the rent-a-video fighting across the sky? There were hinta for the observant that something new was being added in. Besides how boring would it be if they revealed from the beginning that this show is actually an AU Mystery about Scotts murder? Takes the surprise away.

I was expecting a comic adaptation and I was let down. So I dropped it after 2 episodes.

I enjoyed it overall even if I felt like it was paced really poor at times, and especially towards the end. I wish Scott had at least a little more screen time as his arc especially feels underdeveloped. Like we don't even really know what caused him to regress so hard aside from a "rough patch".

To me the problem isnt the new content. Its that with some minor tweeks, the shows stories could have been B plots or extra content on the orriginal story, before or after some fights in the orriginal narrative. They could have had it were they didnt need them teleported back to their homes afterwards (the author says thats what happens when they puff into money). If someone intentionally markets a product as what you expect it to be and does a 180, its false marketing even if the end product had alot of passion behind it and would have had less of a schism if they just were upfront.

I felt that comment your friend made. We core fans REALLY wanted a proper adaptation, but I personally still am thorn between that and appreciate this series. Like your friend, wish I hadn't read the comics first

Netflix would be lying if they said they weren’t misleading with their advertising. However, despite what some psychos are saying online, the show is 100% in line with the Scott Pilgrim brand. In the comics, Ramona is the second main character. The story is just as much about her as it is about Scott. As a fan of the movie and the comics, I would have been pretty disappointed if the anime just retold the same story like everyone is expecting. Brian Lee O’Malley created Scott Pilgrim to be a deconstruction of Shōnen anime tropes, while blending the current hipster lifestyle. And this anime is a perfect continuation of those ideas. If anyone is disappointed, then they’re fans of the movie that only like it because of the nerdy action bits, and not the character growth and development.

I binged the show and then watched the movie for the first time afterward, and I honestly really like both equally.

I have read the comics and watched the movie. When the anime started I thought it was going to be a straight forward adaptation or a mixture of the movie and the comics. I'm happy I got this version. Too bad we didn't get to see the rest of the comics characters. I mean you can see them in the background if you look closely but it's not the same.

I think that people don’t get to feel “betrayed” by what creators offer them. Fandom culture is just people deciding that something that was created by someone else belong to them, and it’s not the case. Bryan Lee O’Malley wanted to tell another story with his characters and he has every right to do so. Did I want a straight adaptation of the comic; yes. But when watching the first episode I realized I was kinda bored because I ALREADY SAW ALL OF THIS. So I was not only pleasantly surprised but really excited that they decided to explore something different. And sure, that’s just my opinion, but those who didn’t like it can just say that, they don’t need to go cry about feeling “betrayed” as if they were owed exactly what they want. You take what you’re offered, and if you don’t like it, say you don’t like it, and don’t take it. Period. You weren’t “betrayed”. 🙄
