Did Pokemon Legends: Arceus "Fix" Freeze?

Pokemon Competitive Singles has been plagued by the "Freeze" status effect since its inception. Since Freeze is tied to 10% secondary effects and can't be applied directly by a status move, it is rarely seen compared to every other status ailment. But when a Freeze happens, it will often end a game on the spot.
Freeze is the most hated status ailment for this reason and many fans think it's long overdue for a rework. In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the Freeze mechanic was actually reworked into a new status ailment called "Frostbite". While this game had very different mechanics from the main series, could this new Frostbite ailment be a blueprint for a potential reworked Freeze in future instalments?

Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RU-vid. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

@Rashyboy05 A lot of amazing ideas added in P:LA were reverted in S/V for some reason. The changes to Hyper Beam/Giga Impact/Roar of Time having the next move essentially be negative priority/have decreased Speed instead of needing a whole recharge turn, the changes to Shadow Force giving it a similar effect to how Hyper Beam and co are like in the game instead of taking two turns to use, the Frostbite status replacing Freeze, the Drowsy status replacing Sleep (while this one isn't quite as good as Frostbite, it's still better than literally not being able to move at all), double super-effective attacks dealing 2.5x damage instead of 4x damage - saving the viability of some mons with crippling 4x weaknesses, and (Cherrim getting a stat boost in its Sunshine form - I know it's a stand-in for Flower Gift not being in the game, but they seriously need to have mons like Castform and Cherrim get additional stat buffs when they go into their alternate forms because their usefulness currently is just not it) are all changes that should be brought back come Gen 10 or whatever over the return to default that S/V had. And they should also have the Origin trio's gems be Reveal Glass esque Key Items again while they're at it.

I think they should change ice type to something more like a "cold" type this could keep the theme and style but change the type match ups cold resists fighting because fighting in the cold is hard. Immune to water as it just freezes and becomes more ice. Super effective against steel because cold makes steel metal brittle. It's easy to justify almost any type matchups and it would give ice type a chance to be rebalanced. I personally that resisting fighting could be a buff that could drastically change the ice type

Changing it from freeze to frostbite also opens up more design space. You could give a percentage to inflict frostbite to more moves and create new moves that applies frostbite that are functionally similar to thunder wave or will-o-whisp. It would also create a use case for it compared to burn. Do you worry more about taking physical damage? Bring burn moves. Do you worry more about taking special damage? Bring frostbite. Now if only it wasn't stuck in Legends Arceus...
@ultimaterecoil1136

It just creates a whole lot of work for them. Physical is intentionally designed to be stronger but also have things that specifically hamper them. Abilities like huge power have no special counterpart for a reason same as special priority distribution has been largely nonexistent and the same reason as why special attacks are stuck with low accuracy as a downside for decent power options and some have that and a second downside like overheat and Draco meteor where as physical downsides are more verried so you can in many cases pick the downside that matters to you the least. Close combat is the ideal option for fast frail attackers for example where as emboar’s massive hp pool makes recoil negligible and super power is often used on hydreigon as a way to handle blissey in earlier gens since it only cares about the attack stat for handling blissey since blissey normally handles its special attacks fairly well and focus blast has a very real risk of doing nothing. This asymmetrical nature sets physical and special apart and makes them both have more noticeable identity. One offense isn’t necessarily obviously better then the other they just have their pros and cons. Starting to add things to specifically counter special means either a special is just now obviously worse then physical since you just have worse abilities worse moves and are still countered just as much anyway or you have to start actively taking steps to make things symmetrical. Now you have to retroactively buff special mons give some priority options make special huge power give some mons both new and old that and that’s just a lot of hassle just to even begin trying to explore the possibility of what if we did burn but special or what if we did intimidate but special. Trying to make everything perfectly symmetrical would be a nightmare to balance right from what we already have so it’s best to keep that asymmetrical nature ( and it honestly arguably would be either way) and design around both offenses having distinct weaknesses
@JustMeSavy
@JustMeSavy 2 месяца назад
 adding more counterplay to special attackers won’t necessitate having to make the damage types “symmetrical?” 😭 we have incredibly powerful special attackers in large part due to a lack of any way to mitigate special damage compared to physical damage. Even the best physical attackers in recent times are strong bc they have ways to circumvent physical counterplay, like urshifu with crits “A lot of work” is such a terrible argument too lol. Yes it takes work to design a game and its systems, especially when they’ve been neglected for multiple generations 😂

@@JustMeSavyto be fair, dynamax and tera helped a LOT. tera lets you fix the low bp of most special moves with double stab, and dynamax just gives everything 150+ power. without those, a lot of the busted special attackers would run into more issues. ~~also they gave chi-yu a special damage-increasing ability which ruins the asymmetry~~

Similar to frostbite, sleep also got a minor rework in Legends. Sleep got replaced with the condition drowsy. It has a similar effect to paralysis, that being the Pokémon has a chance to not act. However, it has the crucial secondary effect of causing the affected Pokémon to take more damage from direct attacks. While I think that the chance to not act effect could be adjusted, the secondary effect could have some interesting implications for the competitive scene that I think should be explored in any future games alongside Frostbite.

I could see both Sleep and the Drowsy status working independently in the same generation. And Yawn would induce both, one after the other, so it would be taken a lot more seriously. The first turn, the opponent would become Drowsy and risk increased damage, and then on the second turn if they stay in, they fall asleep. On the other hand, that might add some more unhealthy power creep... Maybe Drowsiness can be treated like Confusion where it clears when you switch out?

@@jai249 You putting it this way makes a lot of sense actually. It's kind of making me think how this could be done for others. For example, freeze and frostbite could both exist, meanwhile you could have a weaker version of para that maybe only included the speed drop, where only the stronger version can cause failed moves, or something to that extent. Maybe along that same level, making it where Pokemon of the types of the status are better at getting those better versions, like how poison types can't miss toxic, could help with that as well. I'd be curious to see other ideas for that kind of thing.

Raids aren’t even that bad. The problem is the narrative and quest design give them as much weight as gym battles and Arceus-esque boss fights. And they are just mechanically way slighter. As a sidequest, minigame, tappa tappa experience? Pretty fun! I honestly love the idea of having just a little Rumble in your mainline game, as a treat. But they feel underwhelming when the game forces you to compare them to gym and boss battles. It’s good to force players to actually use auto-battling since it can really elevate the standard roaming gameplay, but this version of the idea ultimately fell flat. Not awful, but an instructive failure.

My main issue with getting rid of the secondary effects of attacks like flamethrower would be a bit of loss of identity. I like how there's a mirrored system of the "elemental" types inflicting status like thunderbolt, flamethrower and ice beam, while the more "spiritual" types of the same tier lower stats like psychic, moonblast, crunch, and bug buzz. The weaker secondary effect of stat lowering being balanced out by a significantly raised trigger chance felt like nice design although it's not universal. If these were removed from moves entirely, you'd gain more distinction of moves within the type, but lose distinction from other types. It's probably better in terms of balance, but I can't help but find this imbalance interesting. I'd be kind of sad if the only difference between Flamethrower and Ice beam was the color of particle effects they create.

I never understood why poison was the only status condition to get two levels of severity. I think that would be an interesting mechanic to extend to the other status conditions.
@yungmuney5903
@yungmuney5903 2 месяца назад
What would they be like exactly? If you ask me the power halving of Burn/Frostbite and the speed drop and turn skip of Paralysis are quite severe to me (Don't get me started on Sleep and Freeze). The reason why Poison has two levels is because it's the most in character, but also game design. Normal poison is a great way to introduce the status mechanic for beginners but it'll also have to be the weakest, which is where Toxic comes in, standing out from the rest as a death clock.
@jericho86
@jericho86 2 месяца назад
@yungmuney5903 I haven't spent much time seriously thinking about what the serious version of other statuses would be, but so far. Bad paralysis: 50% chance to not do anything (same as confusion), further speed decrease. Bad burn: Contact moves self inflict damage equal to 1/2 damage done (gigadrain but backwards). The damage would be calculated with the decreased attack, but not be less than 1/8th hp per turn. Freeze/frost bite: I'm thinking "snow packed" or "snowed in" it would be exactly like Freeze, but would cost the opposing pokemon exactly 1 turn. Sort of like flinch, but would apply to the faster pokemon next turn. It could either be a milder version of Freeze or worse version of frost bite. Drowsy could just be implemented as the milder version of sleep.
@snolls105
@snolls105 2 месяца назад
When I think of how I would rework the status effects, I like to put sleep as a two tier status. First you have Drowsy, which doesn't do anything and can be removed by switching out your Pokemon, and then you have sleep which will always last for 2 turns. Rest still goes straight to sleep. I'd probably pair this with removing the move sleep talk (i don't particularly love the premise of "click a move at random"). I think this would make sleep a lot weaker, which may screw with Pokemon like breloom and amoongus, who no longer would have the niche of being able to use a 100% accurate sleep move, but if it weakens sleep to the point of not needing sleep clause, I think it could be a really healthy options to do stuff like threaten out set-up sweepers or walls that like to spam healing moves. Another change I'd make is to the flinch mechanic. First of all, these changes would pretty much affect every version of flinch except fake-out, which would probably just be changed to "prevents target from acting this turn" instead of "100% chance to flinch." But, I'd make it so that flinch effectively functions like the move Quash. I don't think flinch is a fun mechanic, but it's a little more interesting in doubles. I think screwing with turn priority works really well for doubles since it can be almost as bad as an actual flinch. And I don't think losing the mechanic in singles is a big deal since flinch tends to be associated with a paraflinch shenanigans. Personally, I'd also alter freeze to make the target's atk, spa, and spe x0.75 while maybe disabling healing? It shouldn't halve special attack since special attack is mainly notable for there being less mechanics that interact with it than physical attack. With paralysis, I'd remove the 50% chance to not move, instead paralysis would quarter your speed and disable priority moves. I think this version would be a very good way to threaten Pokemon that function as late-game cleaners as well as punishing players for positioning certain threats too carelessly. This would not fix the raging bolt thing (dunno if that's still a problem, haven't been paying attention), but I imagine it would be a helpful option to deal with threats like Kingambit since it's not like it can tera fire & electric/ground. But yeah, those are the status effects I'd primarily change. Like, I'd want to overhaul attract too for completion's sake, since it's not a very satisfying mechanic even accounting for the fact that it's pretty useless for multiplayer. There could probably be some redirection shenanigans going on? As a side note, I think redirection mechanics really should be more widely distributed in Pokemon. Like, it's a shame there are so few rage powder or follow me users in the game. And I thing it would be interesting to see it implemented with abilities. Like, I was thinking it would be cool if snorlax had an ability where it redirects attacks towards the user when switching in.That's all an aside. Main thing is that having rng that prevents you from playing the game isn't fun. Rng should be used to change how you approach the game, not your ability to play it in the first place. And that applies both to a pvp experience and a singleplayer experience. Like, I don't think freeze is a particularly fun mechanic even in the context of single player, much less pvp, so it should be changed.

I do agree frostbite would be more fun than freeze because the fact that one single freeze can last so many turns means it is very likely to instantly lose you the game if you are unlucky. My opinion? I agree with the video. Frostbite would be fine as a new status condition, parallel to Burn, but it really needs polish to not feel OP. And the distribution of the effect to the moves... or even new ones, like a Parallel to Will-o-wisp. Still, with both burn and frostbite, attacks get neutered all around, and one of the things about special attackers is that there's not much counterplay to their offensive stat, but there's a good chunk of walls for them like Blissey. So I don't know... it sounds really good, but stall players might abuse this now so that now both offensive stats get absolutely neutered by a status condition that chips health overtime.

I’d honestly be okay with them experimenting with sleep / drowsy more too. Like, it’s a tactical staple, but kinda an unsatisfying one for those sleeping. PLA Drowsy seems like paralysis but you take increased damage instead of halved speed, and I’d be down for something like that. Like, maybe you get auto-crit but wake up if you take attack damage? In doubles it can be risky but tactical to wake an ally this way. Or if meant to be less volatile, maybe it’s like paralysis but with halved Evasion? That could add some tactical spice.

I really like that idea of institutionalizing 2 stages of status. Perhaps Freeze can only proc in Snowstorm, or maybe when it triggers against a poke who already is Frostbitten. Splitting up Paralysis like that sounds exciting as well. Giving Grass types a more wide-ranging immunity to non-Electric-inflicted Paralysis could be a counterpart to allowed Electric types to suffer Paralysis at the hands of powder moves. I really did not find Drowsy in PLA to be all that interesting as a wholesale Sleep replacement, but I could imagine it working as an additional mechanic, rather than as a replacement for Sleep. While I agree with mainstream player opinion that Sleep CAN be problematic in the main series, I'd much rather see a change such as the Sleep counter counting down while the pokemon is switched out, which wouldn't feel wildly different in-game, but would be a massive change to it in competitive, rather than its wholesale aggressive redesign, a la Drowsy in PLA. I wouldn't at all mind institutionalizing Drowsy as specifically a PRE-SLEEP mechanic, such as is found with Yawn already in the main series.

I feel that sleep is a more balanced freeze! Sleep set up a random timer from 1 to 3 turns whenever a pokemon comes in and other typing have sleep effect from sing, grass whistle, sleep power, spore, yawn, lovely kiss, and rest. Plus it provides protection from other status and secondary status condition like flinch and confusion much more.

In some of the more recent editions of Radical Red, Freeze was replaced with Frostbite, and it's felt like a godsend, because it's a genuinely fun mechanic. One of the big highlights for me was seeing Ice Body proc on contact moves and giving the attacker a special attack debuff and 1/16th chip damage each turn. Not as good as Flame Body, of course, since most contact moves are physical, but the ability actually has a purpose outside of weather, and that felt really neat!

Here are some of my proposed changes to re-balance Ice type (and maybe tangentially related things): -Change Freeze to Frostbite -Blizzard has a 20% chance to Frostbite (and reduce Thunder + Hurricane secondary effects to 20% as well) -Add a 80 BP Ice type move that has a 30% chance to Frostbite (the Ice equivalent of Lava Plume or Discharge) that is moderately distributed to Ice types -Ice now resists Water and is no longer weak to Steel (and give Steel its Dark resistance back to differentiate Dark and Ghost / indirectly nerf Knock Off and also specialize Steel as a more strictly defensive type) Edit: -If the Water resistance seems harsh, make Scald a 70 base power move but super effective on Ice so that Water and Ice have a strange resistance on each other that is flipped when using Freeze Dry / Scald. Make sure to keep Scald limited in its distribution so that this doesn’t turn into a super nerf-just a neat interaction that goes both ways. You can also mess with the status proc chances to better balance them out if this is too much.

Here’s how I would implement frostbite Keep the basics (deal damage each turn, reduces Sp. Attack damage dealt) When balancing moves that originally freeze, check moves that burn (I.E. Heat Wave have 10% chance to burn? Then Blizzard has 10% chance to frostbite) Add a frostbite version of Will-o-Wisp (called “Ice Bath” or “Freeze”) Add “Ice Orb” which is a frostbite version of Flame Orb On a side note, I like sleep status condition as it is for catching purposes, but if it needs balancing then it could include “number of turns a sleeping Pokemon stays asleep is reduced by 1 when taking damage from an attack” (I.E. if in a double battle you double target a sleeping Pokemon and the other Pokemon does an attack that hits opponents and allies then the sleeping Pokemon wakes up even if it needed 3 turns of sleep to wake up), of course this might need an additional “Pokemon can’t fall asleep the same turn it woke up” to stop potential sleep chaining strategies

The only decent setup options would be Victory Dance, Quiver Dance, Dragon Dance, Tidy Up, Calm Mind, Cosmic Power, Bulk Up, Coil, Curse and Omniboost moves like Clangorous Soul, as you cannot go to +2. No Belly Drum, Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, Agility, Iron Defense, Amnesia, Shell Smash or Shift Gear. Weakness Policy would be obsolete, too. If a boost lasts only a few turns, then it would be easy to stall out setup sweepers with Toxic, Protect and Substitute. You're sacrificing a valuable turn for boosting and if it's not worthwhile, then it won't be used much.

I dabbled with the idea that frozen Pokemon gain the Ice typing and drop their evasion down to -1 if they aren't negative already The premise of Ice is immobility which is a powerful dynamic because the primary meta as it was first introduced depends on how you manage speed ties. Because Pokemon was a game where you had to explore moves and effects, it was imperative that you made the right choice out the gate. It's a lot like chess in that way Not being able to move means that the game is beating you. You're not seeing play, the mechanics are. So if you have an effect that either negates or diverts options, you are in the running In my approach, I made it so that being frozen made mons susceptible to higher critical hits from Fighting types, removing that weakness from the ice type. Since you're essentially stuck in place you can't depend on things like evasion or speed. I even took it a step further and made it so you have an accuracy drop on the first turn when thawed. I figured that since the player has a chance to act on the first turn they should also have to bear the risk of being disoriented In my book, mechanics shouldn't override common sense just because the game allows them to stack. If not for that I can't see why we have clauses. Essentially, moves and features should counteract one another in ways that players should bear in mind when building cores Paralysis shouldn't beat everything, and sleep shouldn't be the end of the world. I just like designing systems that incentivize preparedness. It just seems more fun to reward critical thinking than to punish creativity when designing an offensive. There should be a balance between proactive and defensive measures that don't hinder the momentum of a match. Like how a sword should be accompanied by greaves

Personal opinion, make Ice types resist ground, water and electic attacks. Ground for the same reason ice hits it super effectively. Water because these two types should resist each other. Water resist ice because Ice dosnt usualy freeze water, rather the opposite. However i belive its a matter of volume. If an area of set volume has a greater amount of water than ice, the ice eventualy melt, while the water would freeze if the oposite happens. By this logic the types can even be neutral to one another. Lastly electric because ice is a horrible conductor of electricity. This is a simple reason, but an effective one as its the same reason grass resist electric. Lastly i would think of making hail chip again, so to give ice an edge defensively. This would make ice a good type to have on team for a great ground resist (that alone would make this type skyrocket) as well as being the only monotype able to resist the boltbeam combo. The water resistance or neutraly could be scraped if it makes the type to op, but i think it makes sense. Chip makes people want to play hail more beacuse only one type is immune to it unlike sand. What do you guys think?

Personally I’m fine with the 10% chances on the the Ice Beam “clones”, and then 20% stat drop chances on the psychic clones. I think 80bp moves should get either a 20 or 30% chance of doing a similar effect at a lower power, and then 60bp moves should have a 30-50% chance of causing the given effect. Then maybe some nuzzle/acid spray/snarl clones that guarantee the status or stat drop. I just like the idea of total type balance. Maybe some moves are inherently more powerful, like normal versions of moves are usually 10-20bp stronger than their typed counter parts (think Headbutt vs Bite), but other than that every status effect or stat drop should have a move that falls in line with what I’ve given, and every type should have a useful utility move that provides some non-offensive benefit.

Make ice types resist at least 3 of the following types: water (no explanation needed), ground (since ice is already super effective against it), electric (while water conducts electricity, ice is actualy a solid isolator) and psychic (this one is a stretch, like ice can act as a mirror to reflect the psychic attacks, since the attacker sees himself, idk, its a stretch..) Ice type needs more resistances. Also fix poison offensively, make it supereffective against fighting as it should be.

The big question to ask here is: does frostbite or freeze add value through the lens of competitive pokemon. It's actually a bit weird, GameFreak tends to "prefer" special attackers over physical. Burn & Intimidate had no counterparts until frostbite. I'm sort of with you, I don't really appreciate burn through its extra effects via scald, flamethrower, or even flame body. So I'm not sure I'd appreciate Frostbite. Obviously it'd be less swing prone than Freeze so it's obviously better, but yeah it's not like everyone LOVES scald, so I'm not sure how happy people would be if PLA bitter malice was on like 200 pokemon. These moves should probably just be relegated to something like Will o Wisp or Twave. Has anyone tried your hax free idea as a mod to the game? Would you take out critical hits, too, as a purely random chance? This became a ramble, but whatever, good video lol.

Regarding status moves, I do feel like it'd be more balanced if the moves like discharge and lava plume (and by extension a newly designed icce type move that would theoretically have a chance to proc frostbite) should be less powerful, but have a higher chance to proc the effect. Lava Plume and Discharge have a base power of 80, while flamethrower and Thunderbolt have 90, which i feel like the former can just be ignored since it doesn't offer any nuance. Also could inroduce a move that has no power, but guarantees a frostbite proc if it lands, and by extension a move that has relatively high power and guarantees a frostbite, but suffers terrible accuracy. In essence, we'd then have moves of different caliburs for the main status effects. No Power, guaranteed proc: Thunder Wave, Will-O-Wisp, Frostbite move of the same calibur Average power (70), high proc chance (35%): Discharge, Lava Plume, Frostbite move of the same calibur High power (90), low proc chance (10%): Thunderbolt, Flamoethrower, Ice beam Huge power (100), guaranteed proc, low accuracy (50%): Zap Cannon, Inferno, Frostbite move of the same calibur Substantial power (120), no proc, low accuracy (70%): Thunder, Fire Blast, Blizzard That's at least how I'd go about balancing these kinds of moves

Personally I think freeze is not really the right status ailment to introduce spe att drop, and neither is frostbite. I'd love to see freeze, paralysis and sleep reworked but not in this way. The status that I think should induce a spe attack drop is confusion. I think it makes by far the most sens, and it's a bit more interesting than "just special burn". My idea for it is that confusion would half the special attack of the Pokemon, and then apply recoil to not fully accurate moves based on the user's highest attacking stat. Basically it confuses the target's mind weakening its mental abilities, making it self destructive. The reason why I think this is more interesting than current confusion and frostbite is that it encourages counterplay. Unlike frostbite can switch out to avoid the effect, and if you want you can still use inaccurate moves at the expense of some recoil, or accurate moves to avoid the negative effect altogether. For sleep I think the best idea would be to make sleeping Pokemon recover health and attacking them automatically canceling the sleep. I'm not talking rest level of recovered health, but a decent chunk. Also the number of turn should be consistent and tied to the move. For example spore would be a flat two turn sleep, sing would be a two turn sing with negative priority, grass wistle would be a sleep fake out that only apply sleep for 2 turns, sleep powder would only apply sleep for a turn, hypnoses would last 3 turns but it would wake up the opponent as soon as the opposite Pokemon use a move that's not dreameater or nightmare, ... I think freeze could stay as it it but be applied consistently after the opposite Pokemon take 3-5 ice type attacks, and always last two turn. This would punish more passive pokemon that wouldn't be able to recover health, but you wouldn't have the chance to get randomly frozen. Paralysis should apply its effect consistently after 1 turn and then once every 3 turns. This way the opponent knows when it can attack.

I don't think Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam should lose their status chances. They've already been nerfed in Gen 6. I think Freeze being replaced with Frostbite would be more suitable, though, and there should be a move to directly apply it, like Will-o-Wisp with burn. Something like Ice Beam, even with an increased status chance like in LoA, wouldn't be as nasty as Scald since the status chance stays within its type, and you can counter it with an entire type unlike with Scald. If these three moves were to have their status chance taken away, I think they could be buffed back to 95 BP, along with Surf. Dragon Pulse and Energy Ball could be as well, and Moon Blast and Energy Ball could have their stat drop taken away.

Pokemon franchise needing change has a morsel of irony. Many changes between generations were due to something needing change from the previous. I honestly thought PLA was cool but battling was a few steps back. It all devolved into needing enough HP to tank everything. None of the real PKMN strategy DNA was really there. The main thing PKMN must do is place several challenges that require learning of these in the singleplayer section so people actually see them. Would be nice if the 3rd or so gym/challenge/whatever rocked you hard with the new generational mechanic and only went up from there. 5th gym and above all battles are doubles required + mostly same rules as online PvP. You can still bring an army of legendaries if wanted lol. I've been replaying the old games to transfer up stuff to SV and tbh they have not aged very well to even SV in terms of being a game. Nostalgia-tinted glasses too stronk imo, i.e. HM slaves are obsolete & soooo glad Exp All/Share is now just a general mechanic lmao... Those who were crying about it... Ffs c'mon. Granted only Gen1-3 atm. Never played 4-6 yet (but maybe BDSP counts?). Even Gen8 raids and super high level (relatively) static encounters were pretty neat. Fighting that Lv17 Onix right out the gate (literally) when all i got were Lv6 or 7 was hilarious and actually fun. Actually used "useless" moves like wrap and leer and choosing who needs to take one for the team. PKMN has skated too long with singleplayer + PvP only. It is long overdue for more co-op PvE, and general QoL. It took PKMN 8 generations to give us camping in the wild to heal. Final Fantasy had that during the NES days. What the flyin' F?

I think Frostbite would help balance out one of the bigger problems coming out of the newer generations and that's the overpowered special attackers. Chien-pao and Chi-yu are good examples of how unbalanced attacking stats are. Both can sweep through entire teams with ease using their massive attacking stats and ability lowering the opponents defensive stats. However, If you land a burn on Chien-pao it becomes crippled doing drastically less damage. With Chi-yu there's no way to cripple it's special damage output that's not using move to lower it's special attack. This automatically makes all special attackers a bit better than physical attackers. Then you look at AG and we have Calyrex shadowrider, Mega rayquaza, and now potentially Miradon if it hasn't been banned. All 3 of these have strong powerful special stats so if they get burned they really don't care and just continue sweeping you with special moves. Zacian-crowned is the exception here but Zacian-crowned had 170 attack and outsped the entire metagame. while off topic on Frostbite vs Freeze. I think they could bring over Drowsy from Legends as well to replace Sleep, just a little fine tuned a bit. Drowsy made it so you had a chance to not move, but also made you take extra damage. I think they could get rid of the extra damage and just have the 25% chance to not use an attack for 1-3 turns. It's more RNG but it also means that sleep moves don't disable a pokemon outright for 1-3 turns so pokemon like Iron Valant can't run hypnosis nasty plot and win games off landing one sleep move.

frostbite was so perfect. Special attackers have gone unchecked for so long. sure they tend to be frail, but when all special attackers in OU, UU, and Ubers are almost always faster than physical attackers and tend to have a safer way to setup due to them also getting a lot of status moves, they need the nerf

I distinctly remember being frostbitten by something in legends arceus and thinking “hell yeah. What a great update.” Sad it didn’t stick

I always thought it was BS that you can punch a pokemon thats asleep and it wont wake up. In Shin Megami Tensei (not a multiplayer game mind you) sleep makes you regen like ~1/8th hp each turn, but if you get hit while sleeping, it is a critical hit. Not sure how you would balance stuff around that, but it always made a lot more sense to me. Freeze could maybe give you ice type weaknesses in addition to your own, and make you lose some stats? IDK being fully immobilized for a random amount of turns with little counter play is pretty balls. Also maybe instead of percent chances for moves to status, they could always inflict it on a super effective hit?

This is quite insane.

Eh, I learned to embrace the RNG from pokémon, more often than not too you need to realize that luck comes to those who put themselves in position to receive said luck, such as fishing for the ice beam freeze or for the crit on the mon spamming status moves. Sure, it still might feel unfair, but it's part of the game, and complaining about it won't change anything. My point being, while I don't really mind freeze being in the game, I do admit it is very outdated and in need of changes, and frostbite sounds like the perfect solution. The only thing I'd change is so it had a 25% chance of the mon afflicted not to move, like paralyze, but keeping the SpA reduction. Speaking of which, for the sake of consistency, I'd also love to see full paras have a chance more like sleep where, instead of being completely random wether it happens or not, make it happen after a certain random amount of turns. Same would apply to the frostbite changes I suggested.

The inclusion of Frostbite is interesting but I feel like this would make a lot of defensive teams really problematic because Frostbite is just special Will-O-Wisp and works the same way but for Special Attackers. You need pokemon to have some kind of breaking power and physical attackers are already powerful as it is especially since they can boost up so easily. It would create a dynamic to where Physical Attacker would just chose to be frozen and then can just win the game because you can't paralyze or toxic it. It would also be an insane buff to Fire types because now they are immune to both Will-O-Wisp AND Frostbite too so you can't lower either of their stats. I think this is just an invitation for a lot of defensive structures to go absolutely crazy with hazards and residual damage. Heavy Duty Boots can only go so far. It might create a dynamic similar to Generation 8.

Frozen could also be a unique ice mechanic, but nerf to be a little weaker than sleep.

They should remove the random chance to not move on paralysis and what if sleep always lasted 2 turns, but when a pokemon is hit they wake up instantly

Maybe a status counter system, a bit of an hybrid between Dark Souls' status bars and Darkest Dungeon status tokens. Like you don't get straight up statused but gain tokens and either nothing happens until you reach a certain threshold or you get minor effects until then. Pure status moves would deal enough token to purely status a mon but the lesser the chance the lesser the token so there's counterplay. Say at 3 poison tokens your mon is poisoned, and at 5 badly poisoned. A double layer of toxic spikes would deal 5 tokens but a single layer of toxic spikes would deal 3 tokens. Furthermore moves like gunk shot or fire blast would deal 1 or 2 tokens so on one hand a player can switch out if a status is about to proc or be upgraded and the other can press the advantage by trying to force a proc or upgrade a status. Even further one could have moves, items and abilities to interact with tokens, reduce them, remove them or pass them around. This obviously hinges on reducing the overall one shot potential of the game: a random chance is better than a certain but slower chance if there are 2 hit kos all the time: no point fidgeting with a token battle if the battle ends too quickly, while a 30% chance to burn from scald can be unreliable but the payoff is enormous in a fast metagame if it procs turn 1. Looking at you Chi-Yu.
