I think you are spot on with the same issue on the VW Tiguan. Lady friend of ours bought a one year old Tiguan around 6 yrs ago and it had engine oil leak. Not sure specifically from where. Luckily the vehicle was still under Warranty but she got stuffed around being a lady. She had to take her car to the dealer several time before it was fixed after she said she will complain to consumer protection authority. Watching from Australia.

Well this is definitely unfortunate as they drive really well. I thought BMW using soft magnesium bolts on the water pump (I changed one on an X5 we had) was bad but this is a lot worse because loss of oil can be fatal for an engine. As for modern DFI motors I change the oil every 5000 miles because of the potential for oil dilution. Thanks for the video.

This is 100% accurate and thanks for the video. These oil leaks are very common on the Macan. Just read the forums. I had the issue on my 2016 Macan S and I'm still not convinced the issue was completely resolved by my local dealer. When the issue was diagnosed, I asked the SA how common it is and his response was "far more than it should be." I was also told that the factory has made no adjustments to the torque specs or bolts in later model Macans. My sense, too, is that there's no factory specified fix for the issue (as no recall or bulletin has been issued for the problem). In other words, the techs are left to their own devices to determine how to repair the issue which will lead to further problems and potential fails. Luckily, I'm still under warranty. If you're not, expect at least a $5K bill for this repair. Absolutely inexcusable for Porsche to not address this issue for an ever increasing number of Macan owners.

I’m in my third month of ownership of a CPO 2017 Macan S, bought with only 17k miles. I love the ride, drive and features of this car. However I’ve just noticed oil leak from passenger side front of engine. I haven’t been able to get car up and bottom cover off, but just what I’m able to see it’s most likely the timing cover. Disappointing as I’ve put only about 1500 miles on it, and think this should’ve been caught during the dealership’s CPO workup. Good news for me is that car is still under original warranty. This car replaced a 2009 997.2 Carrera that was bulletproof for the 2 1/2 years and 10k miles I owned it.

The main BMW N20 engine issue is failure of the plastic timing chain guide. Those are known to randomly fragment into pieces. The fragmentation typically causes one of two issues. One, the fragments get lodged in the chain and cause it to skip a tooth. The other is the fragments land in the oil system and block oil flow throughout the engine. Either situation is potentially fatal to the N20 engine. These N20 failures were so common that BMW lost a class action lawsuit over them.

Right, understood. My point is half of the folks that commented on your video appeared to be perspective buyers. So in my comment was just sharing my decision process, which includes service records. This is the challenge of combining two topics in your video: 1. Talking about the oil leaks and design defect and 2. The natural conclusion of whether to buy a Macan or not. Your factual points are valid. Let’s also keep it real; these are not cheap vehicles. Unless you’re talking a preowned or really stripped down new vehicle, these are 70k + when optioned. It just happens to be the lowest cost SUV that Porsche offers. For me it was not that it was the cheapest, but the right fit of size performance and style...when compared to any other SUV of this class.

Hey good heads up, but if you are going to point out issues and I really like that mechanics do this then can I ask you actually tell and show what the solution is. The Oil leaks for instance do stainless bolts fix it ? Or does that cause an issue as they are being screwed into aluminium threads. You can get stronger alloy bolts will this fix it. Also if the mechanical fuel pumps are not great and it sounds a dreadful fault is there another part that won’t crap out. Just my thoughts but thanks for posting as I was looking at the Mecan to buy.

Macan is going to be a much better vehicle. 2019 and up are VW engines so they dont have bolt issues but there are chain problem with those. 2015 through 2018 macans are much better than the 2019 up macans. Bolts are not that big of a deal.

Great video! Our 2017 Macan S going into the shop at 46k to fix the timing cover oil leak. What a shame that Porsche has this issue. Lucky I purchased the extended drive train warranty as the standard factory expired. Now, I'll need to keep an eye on the high pressure fuel pump internal leak. Question... what is being said at the 6:42 mark in this video? What is it that is recommended for replacement?

Non return valves/PCV right under the cover. Check them often and replace them regularly. Just as important as the fuel pumps and failure is more common. My car had one of two valves torn for more than a year, without a single CEL and 3 fruitless visits to the dealer. Long term stress from it could easily be the root cause of these leaks.
@TopAutomotiveInc

Thats covered in my other videos PCV/AOS is an easy detection with a monometet in/WC reading. Problem is dealers do not have this tool or maybe they just dont know how to one. Pcv or AOS across the board goes bad on pretty much all german cars and should be check regularly. Glad they fixed your.

Okay so yeah, 35,000 miles I had a timing cover leak, Porsche told me that's normal for these cars! Thankfully its covered under warranty, what do you recommend as I live on the west coast. Change out all the bolts? Recently there was a fuel pump recall. I get what your saying but the Cayenne is an ugly car, apart from the new 2020 coupe model, which they had to fix and emulate the Macan body more as more people were buying the Macan than the ugly looking old man Cayenne. The Macan looks like a beast and sounds like a beast and you can do more modifications than the Cayenne. Anyway I would love to know where I can go to get all the aluminum bolts replaced to avoid leaks?

We replace them with coated steel bolts to avoid issues in the future. Most Porsche shops will install the same alum bolts that fail.

Fuel tank under the back seat can get cracks at the top. Transfer case issues. Bushings in the steering wheel causing squeaks. Transmission. I have owned a Macan S for four years now and it has had all of these problems and several more. There was a water pump recall early one. All of these things were fixed by the dealership under warranty/recalls. Even the transmission was replaced by the factory even though I was just past the mileage limit. The service is great- they come and pick up my vehicle and leave me a loaner then return my vehicle when it is done. I attribute it more to having been an entirely new model in the lineup for Porsche rather than them being shoddy and expect that the updated model will not have these types of issues.

@@macanclub2365 I want to be fare and say Porsche did a pretty good job on an entry level compact SUV. The problem is they had to cut corners to save money in order to still make profit just like the Boxster vs 911. I had a 2019 Macan for a very short time myself, I was very disappointed compared to my Turbo Cayenne that I still own, but it was expected per the price difference. This was a very bumpy SUV but handled well almost as good as my gen2 Cayenne Turbo with hydrogen suspension variable system. Macan had very low head room in the drivers seat for me and my wife and I am under 6FT forget about rear leg room in the back. I can say that a Macan is not a better built car compared to a Cayenne, it can't because its price tag is 50k+. "Someone ones said to me that a Boxster car was a better built car than a 911, and this was because they owned one" I have owned and worked on many Porsches throughout the years, including many Cayenne's and macan's. (Certified porsche tech. 2011+ Gen 2 cayenne is a much better built car by a mile, way better built quality, better brakes, better suspension, bigger and better brakes, entertainment system, interior with no fake leather seats like the macan, cayenne has a way better built engine including forged pistons on turbo cayennes and piston oil cooling and Asin reliable Japanese transmission ect. This does reflects a higher price tag of course. But that being said, macan is still a better compact SUV in its class.
