I think amethysts would look beautiful on Catherine with her hair colour. QE2 was very traditional so I believe the mourning connection with amethyst may be why she didn't wear them often.

I had never heard of Amethysts being used as "mourning" stones. So that was really interesting. I have all kinds of amethysts. They vary in color, too, depending on where they are mined, and some may reflect how much hematite is in them, making them a redder color. And I forgot why but some can actually be green and called prasiolite. I'm all for all the gemstones in all the tiaras all the time. ETA: I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a tanzanite tiara!
@ShannonR1969
@ShannonR1969 3 месяца назад
Half-mourning (more than six months after a loved one died) colors were lavender/purple and grey, so that's how amethysts (and jet) came to be associated with mourning, as amethysts were often worn with purple/lavender/mauve and grey.

@@trixietrx2346 Hi! Amethysts are made of quartz, and so are Prasiolites and citrine. Their colors only vary due to chemicals in the ground around them. You've seen Ametrines--stones--half purple, half shades of yellow. I love those. Rubies and sapphires are made of corundum, a harder and more costly stone. Hope you get a tanzanite tiara one day!

Queen Mary was famous for visiting wealthy estates of lords, dukes and very wealthy aristocrats. When she admired something, she expected it to be given to her. I wonder if some of her fabulous jewelry came from them?
@ShannonR1969
@ShannonR1969 3 месяца назад
Mary did have a habit of expecting to be given as a gift anything that caught her eye, and if the owner wasn't forthcoming, she wasn't above pocketing it herself, if it was small enough! Courtiers were always being sent bills from people that she had done this to. Mary loved jewelry, and she received a lot of it as a wedding present. Her husband also gave her many pieces, and she purchased a large number from Russian aristocrats and royals who sold them to finance their lives in exile after the Russian revolution in 1917. She also often took old-fashioned pieces from the vaults and had them redesigned so they looked completely new. I can't think of any jewelry that she got just by saying she liked it in someone's home, however.

@@ShannonR1969 The wearing of those, originally, Russian, jewels is a little bit controversial. Early in his rule, Putin was teasing about uplifting the old monarchy; as well as, at the same time, openly supporting the Russian Orthodox church. His media outlets were beginning to discuss why King George did not shelter the Romanovs In actuality, Balmoral castle had been partially modified for them; but by the time the Tsar abdicated it was too late to mount an effort to save them (without invading Russia, which would have involved declaring a truce with Germany - If Germany would have gone along with it) Even then, could the Romanovs been saved by anyone before they were spirited off to the Urals?

HMTQ was not a widow for very long before she herself passed. In addition she was a queen regnant and still active in her "career"/ reign as opposed to a widowed queen consort who was "retired" from her royal duties as spouse of the monarch. You may well have hit the nail on the head regarding why HMTQ did not wear amethysts.

Queen Mary's Amethyst Parure has long been one of my favorite suites -- along with the Swedish Pink Topaz -- and I've always been sad that they got rid of it. The tiara, I feel, is especially lovely. I don't think amethysts should only be for mourning. I think they're gorgeous! You may want to look into opals next. Queen Alexandra inherited a beautiful opal parure from Victoria, but she subscribed to the belief that opals were unlucky and had them switched out with rubies (the Oriental Circlet Tiara, designed by Prince Albert, is part of the parure). QEII was given a wonderful necklace and earrings set from the Australian government during a tour in 1954 that featured large Aussie Andamooka opals, and she wore them once on that tour and never again. I guess she thought they were unlucky, too! She did wear an Australian opal brooch sometimes, though, which was a wedding gift in 1947.

I do hope that we'll be able to see a bigger variety of the jewels.

I don't like the custom work on the necklace, looks thrown together.

I love amethysts, I don't understand why the Royal Family doesn't wear them.

I think it’s a shame that HMTQ did not wear amethysts. She would have looked lovely wearing them with her hair color and complexion. I admit my partiality to the gem. Hence, my YT nom de plume. 😁

Love ya, Brittany, but please look up how to pronounce "mauve." It's a bit like "taupe." French influence.

She doesn't pronounce anything right. Parure, Sotheby's. It drives me nuts.
