Did Sony Lie About PS5's Blazing Fast SSD?

Before PlayStation 5 came out, Sony had to do the very important task of selling a dream to customers. One of the most talked about aspects of this new console was the blazing fast SSD that would transform the way we play games, AND the way they're made. No load times, no long patch installs, and design freedom for game creators. This was the pitch from the System Architect Mark Cerny. Let's take a look at the games today and see if we really are living this new dream. The SSD dream, if you will. Kind of reminds me of that spongebob bit where he doesn't move, but allegedly ran to a rock and came back, looks at you and says "wanna see me do it again?"

The potential is there, they can clear the RAM and load assets faster than ever before but it still doesn't replace the need for more RAM capacity.

They should just implement SSD that is as fast as ram so they don't need ram. Also they could build the system to have only powerful GPU that does all the processing removing the need of CPU. Then make it all integrated in the board instead of being separate components allowing them to build hand held size device

@@wekkimeif7720Scientists haven't been able to invent SSD even 1/10th the speed of VRAM. At the time of writing this (Aug 2023) Phison's PS5026-E26 Max14um Gen5 SSD at 14GB/s is the worlds fastest SSD, about 32x slower than PS5's 448GB/s GDDR6. A lot of this boils down to whether the devs want to put in the effort to use these features or not and whether the dev tools they use can actually support these features. My guess is in the next few years we'll see what the PS5 is actually capable of off as developers get used to the new way of managing data going forward and finding new and interesting ways to save processing power for use in other areas

And it also downloads games a lot faster off the same internet connection. On my PS5 it takes several minutes more, and then also does a checkup scan on it that adds even more time. Cross-gen games have been around for the last few console generations but generally not for as long as they've been going in this current gen. We're now three years into PS5 and XS and there's only a handful of dedicated current-gen only releases. And tbh, even those games don't really look "a generation ahead" of PS4 / XBO. Even worse, PS5 and XsX are already outdated (which is saying nothing for XsS, which is weaker than the last gen One X in some ways).

As the owner of both a PS5 and Series X, I find the Series X to be the faster machine in terms of boot speeds and the Quick Resume feature is a feature I surprisingly found to be more useful than I thought it would. You can switch between or close out one game and load in another in mere seconds using it. It's a feature that would be great for the PS5 to also have. The only game that noticeably boots super fast for me on the PS5 is Miles Morales.

@@itsOGP Having both consoles, I do find that Xbox's functionality is a lot more streamlined than Sony's. Smart Delivery is another prime example. You buy a game and depending on if you're playing on a Series X, S or an older Xbox One the game specific to that console will automatically load. The upgrade system from a PS4 game to the PS5 was a sh*t show by comparison. Sony has a good console & system, but they seemed to put very little thought into some 'quality of life' areas.

I think you have to understand this. The SSD is not the all thing and not the only thing. The things that are done with the SSD is not a new thing. The important thing is the amount of data that is being read and transferred. If you look at the Rift Apart in PC it uses the DirectStorage 1.2 GPU Decompression. And it has to use it to remove the a few steps of the bottleneck in the PC I/O arcihecture which is approximately 20 years old. So you basically do the all work to a point in gpu. That also makes an impact on gpu in PC. But on PS5 there is almost no bottleneck. All the leg work is being done by I/O co-processors and SSD controller. Also for the bandwidth there is much more channeled I/O arcihecture and it can utilize all of them unlike PC architecture. But the game engines should make use of these technical advancements. And this is the aspect that we have to wait and see the devs improve their engine to the standart of the PS5's I/O architecture. From Insomniac Games devs also said that they should improve their engine to keep up with the PS5's I/O arcihecture which is proven by Digital Foundry's videos also. Rift Apart only need 1.5-2.5 gb/s read speed for itself to run without issues. Devs also said with Rift Apart we are only scratching the surface. And now you should think with 1.5-2.5 gb/s read speed they could do this in such a short time. What can they possibly make with upcoming games or even with a PS5 Pro? Mystic if you want i can explain in a much more detailed way for you.

Its a great design maximizing it's hardware as a pure gaming machine. It matches and beats many new mainstream gaming PCs. A solid DIY PC build will still blow a PS5 off the map in games in every category and it does workloads and can be upgraded for years with hardware and software performance enhancements. The versatility, performance options, and longevity, still makes the PC master race.
@mortalride
@mortalride 10 месяцев назад
@@HaloReachisamazingIf you have large amount of memory PCs just brute force it to run it in their memory rather than swapping data from SSD to memory always. Think this like this. If you have more memory it loads the level and prepares and loads also from the upcoming level. That way you dont have to need fast data transfer. But it is expensive since you require more memory compared to your graphics settings.

Sony and Cerny gave all the hardware needed to get rid of loads, they gave more even than needed, but not all developers are able to write software that can use those tools. The series X is more powerful compared to the PS5. In most cases it comes down to which was chosen as lead platform for developing a game. To optimize a game for different platforms takes time and money. What do you think? Which platform will a dev favor? Maybe the one that sells better and will most likely make more profit? Bingo! Otherwise you can also say that theres no difference between a RX5700(nonXT) with some VRAM OC or a GPU that sits between a RX6700XT and a RX6800(nonXT). This should represent the raw GPU power between PS5 and Series X if you compare the specs.

About load screen, it’s jntresting because before, the goal was to achieve no load screen, but due to SSD becoming more available, just naturally loads faster even without much optimisation or effort. This means now, games are purposefully designing certain things to be slow. One example is Spider-Man and other games like Astro boy, when you die, it could probably reload extremely quickly however they still provide an animation (whether fading to black or whatever). With this, pacing for games will become even more important as there will be very little excuse for badly paced next gen games (as in, you know the tropes in AAA where you have to walk through a crevice etc). This will hopefully mean these techniques used will no longer be under the guise of hiding a loading screen, but actually providing atmosphere, world building and a well designed pace.

When talking about console-makers' claims, context is really important. A lot of the PS5's claims, bafflingly, were against a backdrop of "even the PC can't do this", and that's where the claims verge into dishonesty. The SSD speed claims were audacious, in particular, because they were essentially claiming to have invented technology that didn't exist at the time on PC, and in that regard...yeah, they totally lied. It's unfortunate, really, because they didn't need to--simply focusing on how much of an improvement SSDs would bring to the table in general would have been enough, as that was a big deal. The other part of the SSD claim that, at the least, was misleading, was how they leaned into the idea that SSDs somehow boosted in-game speed, not just transitions and loading. This is something PC gamers scoffed at immediately, because they already knew that wasn't how SSDs work. Again, completely unnecessary claim, but they did it anyway.

Glad you're doing content that holds Sony accountable. It's obvious you're a big fan of PlayStation, but that is no reason to let them off the hook when it comes to claims and promises. I really liked the work you did in highlighting the anti-consumer and anti-developer decisions they made a year or 2 ago regarding digital games, digital "licenses" to play those games, and shutting down the old PlayStation stores and how that hurts small devs. I'd like to see a video about "next gen" gameplay that both Sony and MS talked about, and whether they lived up to the claims (up to? 8k, 120fps). I think this is relevant as we move into the PS5 "Pro" and PlayStation 6 eras, because they will use the same type of marketing. Thank you for your work, Ryan.

Sony did a great job in pure drive speed but more importantly the streamlined direct hardware to hardware interaction design is the real advantage of console. I have a direct to CPU DRAM cache drive at 20GBs but, no matter how fast the drive data travels to the GPU it still has to processes and compile it. Cerny (or us missing his meaning) may have confused the data transfer time without accounting for the time the GPU needs to processes the data when loading a game.

I think SONY leaning on the "SSD" was a result of combating the new Xbox features. Microsoft was coming out with a more powerful, smaller console that had a new feature called "Quick Resume". Microsoft was also getting praise for there Back Compat program and GamePass was getting bigger and bigger. I think SONY thought, "let's lean on our strengths" which was IPs & SSD. Unlike Microsoft, who is targeting everyone on earth, I feel Sonys marketing strictly honed in on existing PlayStation customers. When looked at they're statements then, they are somewhat correct. R&C CANT run on the PS4 you have.(which it could lol) you NEED to upgrade. I think they may have went a little overboard.

It’s the same cycle that happens every console generation. People where complaining about how useless the cell processor on the ps3 was and how it was unnecessary when compared to the 360. Years later into the lifecycle, games get more complex and more demanding, and then all fo a sudden ps3 games had an edge over 360 in terms of graphics because the cell was there all along. IMO Sony seems to be ahead of the curve, almost to a detriment, like how the ps3 had blu-Ray day one even though everyone else was still using DVDs. It was seen as meaningless at first, but as games got bigger in the later half of the generation, the ps3 was able to handle much more data on the Blu-ray Discs where on 360 you had multiple discs just play Red Dead Redemption and the like. It’s hilarious how PC players always say consoles hold back gaming, when in reality it’s consoles that bring forth new technology in the gaming industry that become standard later. And I say this as a mainly PC player, I’m glad the consoles switched to SSDs which forces the other game companies too stop relying on that outdated HDD technology. Anyways that was my rant

Splash screens when the game is launched and TV HDMI handshakes/sync take up a lot of time when starting a game. I believe that splash screens are so long because it's some kind of safety anti piracy measure, security stuff happening under the hood. The HDMI TV sync/handshake can be removed on newer TVs like LGs with the feature called QMS (quick media switching), I think. I think that if Sony were to considerably speed up their security procedures when booting the games and implement QMS, then the loading times you mentioned in this video could already be cut in half or so! Resident Evil Village is the fastest loading game I have in my collection so far! I believe that slow loading games like Dead Space simply do not take full advantage of PS5 SSD i/o API because they use multiplatform engines (Returnal is guilty of this too). It's a shame but it won't change. But when devs choose to use it we get stuff like RE: Village. If I skip every load screen and press continue game it take just about 5 seconds in RE: Village. Imagine how much faster it would be if Sony removed the spash screens!
