It’s finally here! Today we examine the big question: Did T.rex and other Tyrannosaurs have feathers? What type? As well as disproving popular myths about feathers!
I hope you enjoy and appreciate my research. Thank you so much for watching.

People who think the chicken as a species is uncool or wimpy or whatever have never owned chickens. Chickens can be pretty violent, especially roosters. If chickens were the size of T-rex, we'd be screwed.

Cervid Skull roosters aren’t scary, they’re actually very sweet birds I break up rooster fights all the time, especially with flocks of wild-ish ones They spazz the fuck out if you pick them up incorrectly, but if you do everything right the fighting stops immediately and the one you are holding feels secure and safe If a roosters spazzes out on you for the various reasons they do, just pick them up, they calm right down Chickens on the other hand are super affectionate and will come when you call them, sleep in your lap, and cuddle you in general I love chickens

I’m 66 years old today and the T Rex was my favorite dinosaur when I was a kid. Back then dinosaurs were divided into Bird hipped and Lizard hipped categories. It was not known then if the archaeopteryx was a bird or feathered dinosaur. Dinosaurs were thought to be cold blooded, slow and plodding, and not especially intelligent or perceptive. Subsequent research since then have debunked or disproven this line of thought. I first learned of the feathered covered Yutyrranus, a theropod related to Tyrannosaurus Rex, and I was FASCINATED. I think such a carnivore would look imposing and even more frightening. I personally don’t get defensive about new revelations in paleontology and encourage further research in this fascinating science.

If Jurassic Park had feathered dinos then people wouldn't be denying this Edit after 3 years: this whole thing aged like milk, since then considering logic involving size, it's lineage, and the tarbosaurus mummy that is now lost to science, t rex was most likely lipped, scaled with almost peach fuzz, and cool brow horns. And as of this post it in theory has as many neurons as a baboon but probably isn't intelligent to make tools and whatnot. Can't wait for this post to become outdated in a matter of months.

My sister starts yelling that Science is ruining her childhood every time I bring up feathers on dinos. She really wants to teach her kids they didn't have feathers for the sole reason that she thinks they look dumb and not scary. I get a good laugh from her kids when I tell her science doesn't care what she thinks and nor do I. Personally, I think they look so awesome with bird inspired feathers. I don't like the patchy spiky feathers most media depicts them with making them look like derpy half plucked chickens with a skin disorder (cough cough good dinosaur. cough cough ice age 3 cough cough). But again, it doesn't matter what I think. It's entirely possible they did. Until proven otherwise, though, I will think of them as awesome ground birds with sleek or fluffy Emu/Ostrich like feathers. Giant long-tailed toothed birds of death!

Feathers or scales, if the animal in question can weigh up to 6 tons of muscle, has bone crushing jaws, and can bring fear into the puniest of creatures. It's interesting just how frequently paleontology uses "phylogenetic bracketing" to determine the unknown traits in dinosaurs, because...well.... it has to! The distinct lack of actual evidence is, in my opinion, where most people seem to get hung up, with another large group getting hung up due to outdated ideas and theories sometimes going as far back as the early 1900s. I mean it's hard to determine what an entire dinosaur looked like when all you have is a few leg bones and a tooth here or there, and almost impossible to determine skin types or coverings when they simply don't exist right now - and even if you do find evidence of something, how do you know it wasn't damaged or unique to that individual in some way? That's what paleontologists and other biological scientists sometimes have to work with. Could they have it wrong? ABSOLUTELY! Could they have it right? ABSOLUTELY! If people understand that there's a general unknown element, then it is a lot easier to absorb. The thing is though that with all of these unknowns, if there is evidence of close ancester having a certain trait it's very likely that it had the same or similar traits. In fact a lot of biological scientists would say it was "safe to assume" the traits were similar. The only real problem to this is trait assumption is "convergent evolution" whereby two distantly related species can have similar traits, ie: a raptor species may very well have feathers, but that doesn't automatically mean because t.rex is a theropod also that it automatically had feathers too. So how closely related are dinosaurs like Dilong and Yutyrannus when you think about their possible trait similarities? I mean Yutyrannus recently has a proposed phylogeny of "proceratosauridae" with someone (paleontologist Darren Naish apparently) indicating it might be closer to relate it to "carcharodontosaurids" both of which might actually have a different evolutionary relation Dilong (and down to t.rex) for instance. The thing about paleontology is as I said before. If we understand that there's that general unknown element, it's easier to absorb. One day a species can be closely related, and another day they might just have similar traits due to the convergence of these traits in evolution. One day two dinosaurs belong to different species, the next they're the same. It's a crazy science, definitely! However, with feathered traits being found on theropods from different phylogenetic groups, and with cladeograms everywhere showing distant ancesters with feathers regardless of the clade you look at, it's "safe to assume" that t.rex did in fact share some of those traits, even quite possibly the feathers ;)

Phylogenetic analysis saves the day, fortunately - in such analyses (which, admittedly, are still only our best guesses) convergent traits are usually outweighed by ancestrally derived traits.

Another reason why elephants are a poor basis for deducing a featherless T-Rex is that their relatives, mammoths and mastodons, were often very hairy. Even if we found a full skin impression of a featherless T-Rex, it would not prove all Rexes were thus; there could have been T-Rex variants adapted to different climatic zones/times, like the elephant family.

Does it really matter... (sure it matters a lot) but what im saying is... a rex with feathers is the same as a rex without them... its still just as bad ass, a raptor with them isn't going to sit there and pick dandy's with it prey... not its going to hunt it (and likely kill it), just like a raptor without them.

Raptorman 619 being accurate is better, reason it matters more than asking “Why does it matter?” Is because it tells us what they acted like. Feathers can be used by many animals different ways which helps us know behavior. A trex might try to use feathers to scare of competition instead of an epic fight all the time for dominance.

Regardless of where T.rex had feathers, I think sometimes we can go a bit crazy with them. I think it highly unlikely that T.rex had the long shaggy feathers seen on some restorations (though not the ones shown here.) Simply because on the real animal they would be over a foot long. I think that downy feathers underneath coarser ones is a likely combination, rather like the insulating hairs and guard hairs on a wolf. In that same vein, display feathers on the arms seem rather impractical. The feathers would need to be enormous to properly stand out on a five+ ton animal (with tiny arms to boot.) this would make them extremely easy to bend and break, when T.rex used its arms. (which it did, an adult could've lifted about 440 lbs with its biceps alone.) My idea of a feathered tyrannosaur is one that is sleek and well camouflaged with no more flash than it needs, rather like a multi-ton hawk. On an unrelated note, if you ever need to thank the Saurian team again you may want to do it at the end of the video. Upon hearing about a prehistory-themed game I immediately paused the video looked it up, nearly had a geek stroke when I realized that it was what I thought it was, and could barely think straight for about five minutes. (Saurian is kind of a dream come true for me.)

Great video! A few stray observations. - Nice to see the croc keratin paper mentioned here. One should note, though, that it does not necessarily imply the basality of filaments in Archosauria (Pseudosuchia has a very strong bracket for scales and osteoderms) - the biggest bracket we have evidence for is Ornithodira/Avemetatarsalia. - The gular pouch _Tarbosaurus_ specimen seems to have been destroyed, sadly. - I'm not sure _Yutyrannus_ definitely has stage III feathers after Prum's convention - Xu et al. state that they're too dense to determine the exact morphology (though I'd agree that both II and III are certainly plausible). - On a related note, Xu et al. describe feathers possibly associated with the metatarsus, but I don't find the association convincing (they're probably just filaments from the other individual on the holotype slab). - I'm sure this has been noted before - you may be familiar with the proposal that _Concavenator_'s quill knobs are just muscle attachments. For lack of further evidence, I personally cautiously follow the quill knob interpretation, though the various counterarguments (most recently Cau's) are rather convincing as well. - I'd caution against _"T. rex_ had feathers" as an affirmative statement - it's still a hypothesis, despite the very strong evidence in support of it; "likely had feathers" would be a more accurate statement. - Yikes, I've encountered every single one of those flawed arguments in the last month.
@TREYtheExplainer
@TREYtheExplainer 8 лет назад
+Rex H.G. Chen Thank you :) and I really appreciate your comments. -Yeah I understood that, I just wanted to mention that very interesting paper. -I knew that thing about Tarbo, super sad. Would have been super cool to see a tyrannosaur with such a unique organ and to see it's possible uses. -I read that too about Yutyrannus. - I am familar with the muscle attachment point hypothesis and the counter arguments. The SVP Abstract book for this year had this as a counter to the muscle attachment argument: "ULNAR BUMPS OF CONCAVENATOR: QUILL KNOBS OR MUSCULAR SCARS? MYOLOGICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FORELIMB OFCONCAVENATOR CORCOVATUS(LOWER CRETACEOUS, LAS HOYAS, SPAIN) CUESTA, Elena, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Madrid, Spain; ORTEGA,Francisco, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid, Spain; SANZ, José Luis, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Madrid, Spain The Concavenator corcovatusholotype (MCCM - LH 6666) is a skeleton of a carcharodontosaurid from the Las Hoyas fossil locality (Lower Cretaceous, Spain). This specimen shows unusual features, such as elongated neurapophyses of the dorsal vertebrae and a series of small bumps on the ulna. The right ulna is completely preserved and all sides are visible, except for the medial side, which is hidden. The bumps are present on the posterolateral surface of the ulna.Three of them, located more laterally, are the most marked, and their separation is 6 mm. The two most distal bumps are posteriorly directed and their separation is from 10.6 to16.7 mm. These bumps are topologically homologous to the quill knobs of birds. Although quill knobs are generally situated on the posterior surface of the ulna, some taxa, such as Gallinula,develop these knobs on the lateral surface. Alternative hypotheses to explain these bumps consist of their association to an intermuscular crest or an attachment scar for the insertion of an ulnar muscle. A myological reconstruction of the forelimb of Concavenator is performed in order to test these hypotheses. The reconstruction is carried out based on the osteological description, anatomical comparison with extant taxa, and using the Extant Phylogenetic Bracket (EPB). The insertions of M. triceps brachii (TB) and M. anconeus (AN), and the origin of the ulnar head of M. abductor pollicis longus (APL) are reconstructed on the ulna of Concavenator. The first is located on the posterior surface of the olecranon. The insertion site of AN is situated on the anteroposterior surface of the ulna based on EPB. The origin of APL is located on the anterior surface of the ulna. The bumps are not located between these muscles. Thus, the hypothesis that the bumps could be an intermuscular crest is refuted. As for the second hypothesis, the bumps could be a muscle scar of AN. However, the insertion of this muscle is a fleshly attachment that produces a featureless surface, without osteological correlates. In conclusion, the myological reconstruction does not provide any evidence supporting the hypothesis that the series of bumps can be interpreted as an intermuscular line or attachment scar. However, the existence of birds with quill knobs in the same position as the bumps of Concavenator inclines us to consider that this is, so far, the most parsimonious interpretation. This interpretation indicates the presence of skin appendages in Concavenator, preceding the wing feathers present in Maniraptora" Note that the abstract mentions 'skin appendages', not feathers... Concavenator is an area of ongoing scholarship, I personally would not consider the above the 'last word' on whether or not it possessed quill knobs. I agree I should be more cautious with it as they are still under debate. - You are right! I shouldn't have been that definite, I feel like I didn't clarify enough that this is based solely on current evidence and future ones might change this conclusion found in the video. - XD I know I get those arguments all the time and many are entirely baseless. Thank you so much for your comments :), feel free to give any more criticisms or concerns

It is hot, wet and humid environment not at all the arid plains that tend to be favoured by emus. But this only adds weight to your point that large feathered creatures could and do very much live in a wide range hot environments and thrive. If palaeontologists have to butt heads with creationists that the Earth isn't 10,000 years old despite all the physical evidence then we can expect the old school dinosaur fans to fight tooth and nail to get their beloved scaly T. rex back. @Blokewood3
@Blokewood3 4 года назад
There's been some bad science on the side of the scales, but the feather fans are getting overenthusiastic too. Before you insist Tyrannosaurus had feathers, keep this in mind: 1. Yutyrannus lived about 30 million years before Tyrannosaurus. It is not a close relative. 2. Yutyrannus weighed about 1 ton. Tyrannosaurus weighed approximately 6-8 tons. This difference in mass could effect Tyrannosaurus's heat regulation significantly. 3. T. Rex's closer relatives Tarbosaurus, Daspletosaurus, and Gorgosaurus, have skin impressions that all show scales. Some of them show scales in specific areas that Yutyrannus had feathers, suggesting that Tyrannosaurid ancestors lost some feathers they once had. 4. It is still possible Tyrannosaurus could have had some feathers, but if so they would most likely have been limited to the upper sides of its body.

I am from the future, the simple answer is yes, T. Rex did have feathers, however, they didn't have full coats of them. T. Rex young had full coats of feathers, yet probably started loosing them as they got older, once fully grown, the T. Rex probably only had a very light layer of feathers, barely visible.
@paleostories_7839
@paleostories_7839 2 года назад
The evidence of feathering in tyrannosaurus or any tyrannosauroids is very scarce, we only have evidence of feather integument on the early tyrannosaurs such as yutyrannus, but they split off the family millions of years before any tyrannosauroid was alive. So in all answers we do not know if even juveniles had feathers, it is definitely plausible but the evidence is very low.
@DZ0D3
@DZ0D3 2 года назад
@@paleostories_7839 true, I only meant if they did have feathers, as I said, it would only have been a very light layer of them and probably would have been leftover from their early stages of life. edit: I messed up on my reply, and I 100% agree with your comment, my comment from 2 weeks ago is outdated, probably the only tyrannosaurs that had feathers were yutyrannus, Nanuqsaurus, other early tyrannosaurs, and maybe some larger tyrannosaurs as juveniles, such as Albertosaurus, all though that's pretty unlikely.

I think T.Rex had feathers on its head, neck, arms, upper torso, back and possibly base of the tail, with naked skin on its face, belly, thighs and shins and scales on most of its tail and feet. I feel like ostriches T.Rex would have mostly naked skin on its belly and legs to prevent friction while running. How much of T.Rex's face was naked is hard to say, since most of its prey items are smaller than it so it wouldn't plunging its whole head into the body cavity of carcasses like vultures.

speaking of court ship and mating i don't think that predatory dinosaurs even with feathers shaked there tail feathers to impress a mate. oviaraptors probably did but they are mostly omnivorous predators are diffrent for example most modern day predators including predatory birds like eagles and hawks impress potential mates by ethier catching prey and bringing it back to that potential mate or fighting off other males maybe some dinosaurs like troadon or compys built nests to impress a mate but i don't think fairly large raptors did like dakotaraptor or utahraptor ( just stating my own opinion not going against anyone else )
