Did Technology Kill Modern Mythology as Joseph Campbell (the creator of the Hero's Journey) claims? Is modern myth best represented in the writing of Marvel superheroes like Loki, Thor, Odin, and even characters like Wanda? What about DC comics? And most importantly, do you want to see modern myth explained? Of course you do.
Well I'm here to argue that not only is Joseph Cambell wrong, but superheros do not count as modern myth. And if that wasn't spicy enough, I also believe that modern myth is alive and well, and that you can find it in films like Blade Runner 2049.
So here's my video all about how to write mythology in the modern world, as well as why you might not want to.

You're very welcome and thank you so much for subbing! I always second guess covering off topics like this because it feels like they don't really help anyone. So knowing this helped you really means a lot.

Modern myths are most prevalent in the conspiracy theories of those who are trying to understand the unknowns of modern society. I’ve noticed trends in the stories that demonstrate communal ideals and feelings, within the contradictions of the promises of nationalism. The American dream is a myth, but it makes clear what the majority’s ideals are. The future is unknown, the stories of the past that resonate with us become the foundation that new knowledge we use to deal with it. Mythology is as important now as it was in the past, it’s just that we don’t seem to understand how it actually works IRL

This is a really interesting point. I can definitely see how conspiracies could be a filler for the hole left by traditional myth, but I can't say it's a healthy one. And given the potential dangers of certain brands of conspiracy I expect social media giants will continue to filter it out, so I'm not sure about it's mainstream longevity. I think eventually tech will get to the point where independent content creation is easier and without marketing companies driving the direction of content we will finally see true myth return to creative fields on some level. Though longevity will still be an issue, I think broad enough access will help bring forward and filter out those creators who thrive under those conditions.

@@CloudKitten unfortunately I’m not so optimistic. Tech ultimately follows the desires of who owns the patent, and its agenda has become pure profit rather than any nobler ideals. Mythology, like culture, tends to evolve rather than be controlled- something the tech giants would like to change, and while it may be called something new within in a modern environment, it will still be used to create context to the unknown. IP is the foundation of modern wealth, and individual creators can be considered obstacles to profits by the content providers, and their corporate’creativity by committee’ has destroyed franchises rather than grown them. The evolution of culture, myth and even religion shows more about the ideals and dreams of the people, which gives me hope, but the results of society can be the polar opposite of the ideals. Conspiracies won’t be eliminated by the algorithm, as it actually profits from them. The mythology of gitmo, Qanon and co is alive and well because we don’t have trusted institutions who can be relied on. There’s too much complexity in the world, information doubles regularly and humans were never designed to be able to deal with it all. I want to see more crowdsourced investigation, empowering REAL grassroots organisations for fact checking (like librarian’s, retired teachers, volunteer mods) funded by the people and for their benefit. Mythology is a product of a human need to understand the unknown, and we aren’t running out of secrets to be hidden. While tech is guided by the worst of human nature, our unconscious strategies to deal with it will continue, and we end up creating a world in our own image - a world run by selfish greed, limited understanding and never learning the lessons of history

"The Space Dog!" :D I want to watch whatever that was, just because of that clip. What a cute animation. Every one of your videos is like a master class in storytelling. I Thank you for all the hard work you put into making them enjoyable

The clip was from Over The Moon which is a Netflix original so maybe we could watch it this Saturday or next on the Discord. But the dog eating the moon part is apparently a legit Chinese myth which is super cool. Ancient people came up with the coolest stories for explaining things. I'm so happy you liked the video! I'm happy Josh convinced me to split this from the last one. I added more content and I feel it works better on it's own. And I definitely agree about working to rely less on the perception of others. That's definitely one of my greatest weaknesses and is (i think) why the film spoke to me so much. Social media is such a new and unique problem and it will be really interesting to see how we tackle it in the future. Thank you so much for the early watch and comment

Love your positive energy and receptibility to criticism. You are a great thinker talking about a very important question! That being said I feel that myths are uniquely "myths" because of their more organic coming-into-being. In other words, I agree with Campbell and others that one can't choose to create myth because that indivdual will sort of defies the deep, archaic reach of mythology that comes from a more homogenized culture. Modern myths can be created, I hope and believe, but I think it is a process that humans need to surrender to than consciously assume... Would love to know what you think! ❤

Great video Megan! You put a lot of thought and care into this one and it shows. Modern myths aren't something I've thought much about, but the part towards the end where you talk about social media and followers vs authentic relationships is something I think about often and really resonated with me. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas! Loved watching this.

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. It was a RU-vid bug and should be fixed now.

RU-vid cannot analyse the quality of your videos because obviously these are just computers run by an algorithm But what they will check is whether you are a regular video content creator. When that criteria is fulfilled one day, out of the blue your channel we get blessed by the algorithm . probably will get blessed soon. it has been two years, right .
@ashwinarun9649
@ashwinarun9649 3 года назад
When your channel is in the RU-vid algorithm blessing list, it will be a blast for videos like emotional breakdown, how to make your readers cry, how to train your Dragon videos and any other emotional structure analysis video, that you will make in the future I humbly suggest 2nd part video of deep analysis of family tropes and how they work. because the first video is Just introduction and does not have the emotion structure breakdown which you usually do I am pretty sure that those videos will be a blockbuster because there are literally millions of videos thousands of courses and thousands of books on story structural analysis, character creation ,theme creation , settings, dialogues excetra for writers, but it is only one book that teaches writers how to create emotion . that is called "emotional craft of fiction" written by Donald Maass. I keep that as a Bible. I believe that a story or a short story or a poem or film should be e emotion first and then a blanket or story structure or story or characters can be woven around it. not the other way around. one does not make a story and then expect readers to feel emotions it does not work that way I'm saying I keep your videos of emotion breakdowns along with my story Bible. They are unique. ❤️❤️❤️

I think Joseph Campbell should've talked to kids more. It's been a while since I was one, but the way stories ran through schools in a time with limited, dial-up internet access (if that) was like wildfire. "Playground myths" if you will - the main one I remember being the mew hidden under the truck in Pokemon. Also, I know that kids today still draw the S figure, I think it's called stussy? Unexpectedly saw it at work a few years ago. I don't think that'd be a myth, almost more like a folk art
@CloudKitten
@CloudKitten Год назад
Research into the spread of playground myths would certainly have been fascinating, though the rapid spread of internet and device access among children as well as the popularity of online personalities likely means that the spread is primarily digital and creator-driven these days.

What's a story that feels like modern myth to you?
@thoughtfuldevil6069

Slenderman. Doesn't matter how debunkable it is - people believe what makes life interesting. Sasquatch and UFOs can conveniently escape high-quality cameras, but they can't escape our hearts and minds, seems like.

Your take on Joseph Campbell is not accurate. He did not believe that mythology was dead. He believed that the "local" mythologies of antiquity are no longer relevant to modern civilization, and that a new mythology, framed around the human race as one people (of Earth) was required and would eventually emerge. This is abundantly clear in his "The Power of Myth" series with Bill Moyers as well as in his writings, such as The Inner Reaches of Outer Space, which I happen to be reading right now. Campbell even acknowledged that the original three Star Wars movies marvelously incorporated mythological themes, motifs, and ideas in a modern presentation.
@CloudKitten
@CloudKitten 2 года назад
Did you even watch the video? I literally show clips of Joseph Campbell himself from the series with Bill Moyers (as well as multiple other sources) expressing his thoughts on the future of myth. PS: I may not have read The Inner Reaches of Outer Space, but I based this video on his take from the entirety of the Bill Moyer series (which I've watched twice, and read multiple times in the book form), Hero with a Thousand Faces (which I've read 3+ times), 11+ hours of obscure lectures, interviews, and recorded discussions, and a university mythology class focused largely on his work and works built on his. If his take in that one book was different, well then, it doesn't really change the point of the video or his take in the majority of his works. PPS: I am a huge fan of Joseph Campbell and his work.
