Every year Goodreads users vote for their favourite books of the year... and every year I disagree with the winners 😅 So I decided to read them all (with a few exceptions) so I can judge completely and entirely objectively whether or not they deserved to win (and if not, which book(s) should have won instead). Get ready for some rant reviews, some fawning, and some confusion!
Do you agree with my take on these winning books? Let me know in the comments!

I watched a booktuber vote and was amazed at the process. She states more than once she hadn’t read any of the books in certain categories but she loved a cover or she loved the author. Very much a popularity competition.

I also did a video reading all the winners and it was... interesting. It's obviously a popularity contest, a lot of books won because of the author or the bookclubs, but then I also found some new favourites so I'm glad I read them!

I finished Crying in H-Mart last month and it hit so close to home. I have an Asian immigrant mother and a white American father. Everything Michelle talked about really resonated with me. It made me really see things through my mom's eyes. I have since reevaluated our relationship and I'm working harder to show her how much I love appreciate her. I cried so hard at some parts lol

This is why I don't really like the good reads awards--because it is just a popularity contest. Especially with TikTok boosting the life out of some books. You can look at the nominees and know who will win just because the author name or series. I always feel really disheartened. For lore Olympus, I've read it and it's fine. Anyone saying it is the best persephone and Hades they've read probably mean it is the ONLY persephone/hades they've read lol Hope you read some good books to make up for all the hate reads 💖

📚📚as someone who started reading lore Olympus in webtoons, I agree about the first physical volume not being very compelling. With being able to just keep going, the story moves forward more quickly with more interesting plot points, but the physical book suffers because each “chapter” is relatively short and not much happens, and the reader can’t scroll so it feels longer.
@PlantBasedBride
@PlantBasedBride 2 года назад
It would have been nice if they'd included more of the story into the volume! At least enough to hook the reader a bit more.
@missdragon5892
@missdragon5892 Год назад
@@PlantBasedBride Yes, the format of webtoons often means that the stories are much more drawn out, and told over the course of many many many weeks. It's like trying to adapt a television show to a movie, but instead of condensing the tv show plot, they just turned the first three episodes and put them together and called it a movie.

I read seven books from the Horror category and in my opinion all of them were better than the winner. I agree with each point you made about "The Final Girl Support Group". I'm also at the point where I won't be reading any more of his books. I was so conflicted after reading my first book by him that I didn't leave a star rating. But after reading this book I can see a clear pattern.

The Webtoon for Lore Olympus is better than the physical copy. I'm not sure why the physicals copy fell flat. The 2nd seasons more story happens and leaves on a cliff hanger to wait for the author/artist to write/draw season 3.

How I've waited for this video! Though I don't read as much now as I use to do (studing at university so it's alot of reading anyway) I still enjoy listening to all your book reviews and adding books to my TBR list. I have some of the winners on my TBR so it will be interesting to see if I share the same oppinion as you do 🙂 I just have to say, even though romance/YA isn't your preference, I think you really should read The fault in our stars by John Green. I'm 27, and its my favorite book. I can't tell you how many times I've read it, both in swedish and in english. It is soul tearing, heart warming (and breaking), making me bawl my eyes out and also gives me a huge smile and fuzzy feelings, all the feels in one book. 📚

Also, since I saw it in the nominees when you were scrolling through, I highly recommend Detransition, Baby--though I also really liked the Sally Rooney book so our tastes probably don't align in the slow-paced, reflective, character-driven fiction realm lol

Hi Elizabeth - I know books / enjoyment is very personal, but you are pretty much 100% on for me in Sci Fi, Fantasy and Contemporary. If you hate something, the odds are very high I will. That said, man, I just feel badly that you read or listened to so many books that weren't enjoyable. Life is too short for spending time on bad books, so in future, if you get into it and DNF, that's good enough for me as your fan! I mean, the Court of Silver Flames had a little bit more adult feel than the previous parts. It was all about a deep trauma and a redemption arc for Nesta, the hateful tough sister, accepting yourself and dealing with romantic feelings towards someone you don't want to feel vulnerable with because you've been hurt before. It wasn't bad for a 30 yo me ;) The rage at the first boo? Oh so relatable. I didn't read this one but the rage felt familiar :D I personally love Leigh Bardugo, Ninth House is my top 3 fav books and I have 2 books of hers left to read. And for the thousandth year in a row I was really frustrated to see her win the category she was in automatically based on her name alone. It's even more frustrating that now that her books are being categorized as adult fantasy, my favorite genre, no one I read and enjoy will ever win again...

Rick Riordan is probably one of my favourite authors. I read all of the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus, but I was around 13-15 when I started reading his books. Also I‘ve only read one in the original English version, the rest were translations. A Series I love at the moment is the „traitors trilogy“ by Erin Beaty. But I’m still in my teenage years, don’t know if Someone older would enjoy too. I love the „genders are equal“ thought our main characters Sage and Alex have in a world where that’s just not common. 📖

Thanks for being honest with your reviews! I've only read 1 of the winners, but even hearing this helps me be more objective about stories I read. I also find that I'm usually averse to reading books (or even watching shows) that are very popular unless I found out about them on my own... Idk what it is lol. I HIGHLY recommend We Free the Stars (and the first book),the second book in particular is just so beautifully done, the characters have real conflict with each other (family or otherwise) while they try to defeat the "great evil" and even the antagonist has depth to him, and they make real true mistakes with consequences. It honestly didn't read as YA to me, because the characters are so nuanced, and although the protagonist is 17, the rest are older. Sabaa Tahir's series is also decent, the last book most of all

@@PlantBasedBride Ruby Dixon is very prolific so she has many series. Because de world-building and the character's background it is best to read them in order. So, I would recommend Corsairs, because it is only four books. If you like it, it has a spinoff and it is set in the same universe as other series by the same author ;)

I’ve never read Sally Rooney, but I have seen the Normal People Hulu show (before I knew there was even a book, I binged the show in one sitting) and I thought it was a masterpiece of a show. so beautifully shot. I don’t think I’ll read the book, because, honestly, the themes were a bit triggering, so I don’t think I need to experience it twice. I’ve heard the show is better than the book, so that has also solidified my thoughts. But after what you said about her other book, I think I’ll steer clear Also! I absolutely love Leigh Bardugo's writing as a YA novelist. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are my two all-time favorite YA fantasy novels! The first three books (Shadow & Bone trilogy) were alright, and obviously important for world building, but I read SOC and CK first, so going back to read S&B trilogy was dull. I love the darkness of the characters, the diversity, the LGTBQ+ rep in mannnny ways, the duality of womanhood (or girlhood?). I think she's an excellent writer. King of Scars and Rule of Wolves were also great books, I liked them better than the trilogy, mainly because it had all the characters I loved and none of the ones I didn't. hahaha

OH MY GOD... I don't know if you will ever read my comment, but I agree with you ONE HUNDRED PERCENT on Sally Rooney's book review. I just finished her book 'conversations with friends' and for the life of me, I have never felt such hatred towards any book like this before. I was trying to figure where I had seen a bad review of this author and I remembered your video! As I rewatched you reviewing her book, I FELT it in my bones that this is exactly what I would say for her book 'conversations with friends' as well!!!! Even though the books are different, your review feels like it's meant for 'Conversations with Friends'. Pretentious characters who are awful to each other, a lot of miscommunication, PRETENTIOUS (needs to be repeated because who drinks wine and smokes and travels to France and at the same time says they are BROKE with negative balance in their account), dry descriptions of nature, lacking emotion, passion and soul! - truth. (and thank god you didn't read the book, but listened to the audiobook. There are no quotation marks at all and it was so hard to understand whether it was said by someone else, or it was the monologue of the main character. so frustrating)

Not all webtoons are like that- a lot of them aren't actually as "well written" as lore olympus (it used to be that a lot of these comics were written by people whose first language was not english), but as some one who has read them for years (and kept up with at least 10 that post on a each day of the week). They are definitely a different substance entirely than books for me. I read them and have a different set of standards and what im looking for. There is a lot of dissapointment to be found in the romance genre on webtoons- especially the most popular ones, but there is actually a ton of really great adventure and action comics on there. The artwork is also something to be appreciated. Some recommendations: Gul, X and Ash, Nomads, Jungle Juice, Lumine, the lone necromancer, Omniscient reader, the strongest florist, and 66,666 years: advent of the dark mage

Personally I love romance, but it’s a genre that I’m very picky about as well. “The people we meet on vacation” felt like..a chore to read like my mom was making be read this for summer reading, the writing was messy and I couldn’t comprehend some to most of the parts well. (Also I just don’t like books that write in first person in general so..) I think the characters had a good dynamic(talking the sense of extroverted x introverted) , I could compare them to some other characters that I really like but Poppy and Alex had no chemistry at all and nothing about them stick to me. Also the jumps between the past and present were so annoying an just felt like a filler beach episode.

I can understand your reasons for why Lore Olympus didn't vibe with you, I have friends that don't like it either. It is one of those stories that either you can relate, or not. And that is totally fine! I will tell you that the story does get better, at least from my perspective. I personally loved the art style and color palette, but again, not everyone agrees. I love this story and all of the drama. It has this way of mixing the modern world with the Greek history and making it a type of love story that, again, you can relate to, or not. I also am not personally a big fan of romance in general, so me not getting the hype of PWMOV isn’t the biggest shocker, but I do NOTTTT understand the hype of lore Olympus. At all. Besides the art style being gorgeous. But even then, the over sexualization of the women annoyed me so so much. As an avid webtoon consumer, I heartily agree that the way webtoons are drawn/written don't translate well into physical books, especially story-driven narratives. Webtoons are comprised of fixed-size, scroll-down panels that don't "flow" like traditional comics/graphic novels do. On top of that, Lore Olympus has been around for 5 years, which is how it has amassed a huge following. It's very much another contender for "voted best because popular" picks.
