I do tend to quibble... Guttenburg invented movable type. Many Catholic editions of the Bible were printed prior to his. The difference is that each page had to be hand carved, (and backward) on a single plank of wood, so if you make a mistake you had to start all over. I have a page from one such Bible, it is one of the over 25 approved Catholic German Translations which were in print prior to Luther's Birth.

It may not have been in codex form but every book of the New Testament was quoted by the end of the first century A.D. into the early 2nd century. The vulgate was late 4th century. I'm not a bible verse thrower, but I have a general understanding of the Lord and what He expects from us and how we were created to follow Him and by doing so we are doing what we were created for. All this is in the Catechism. But if it didnt exist, the Ten Commandments would certainly be a good start. Then the Gospels which tell of of Jesus and how he sacrificed his life for us, and the sacrifices we must to do follow him as our leader, our God. The Gospels also tell us about the crucial importance of avoiding sin to preserve our souls from an eternity away from God and the great reward of going to Heaven, where we were prepared a place, if we stuck to Jesus's teachings, all according, of course, to God's will.

We are saved by God's grace through faith and not by our own efforts. There's not a sinlge perosn in the Bible that wasn't saved by faith alone. Which Ten Commandments do you follow? The Catholic commandments where the 2nd one has been removed? We aren't saved by obedience to the law. We are saved by grace. The old covenant was for the Jews only and a new covenant was promised to us by God in Jeremiah 31:31-34 because His people had broke the old covenant. It saved nobody. Those who were saved were saved by faith. The Gospels say nothing about a pope, the papacy, auricular confessions to a priest, a priesthood, penance, sacraments, indulgences, eucharist, infant baptism, cardinals, nuns, monks, single bishop over all churches, transubstantiation, praying to Mary, praying to the dead, rosary beeds, worshiping statues, obedience to the law, etc. They say Jesus did all the work for us. All we have to do is believe.

People use to use small stones or pebbles to keep count when reciting the psalms! The rosary beads are no different...they are for keeping count! When we recite the rosary think of James 5:16..where he says the prayers of the righteous availeth much. Who is more righteous then our very own Blessed Mother! Then imagine kneeling..praying right next to her..meditating on the mysteries of her Son's life! The Hail Mary is taken straight from scripture Luke 1:42! The beads are to keep count 150...the same number as the Psalms...150..it was to replace the psalms..known as the psaltery. I believe it was for those who could not read the psalms..so they recited the Hail Mary over and over. The Catholic Hail Mary Prayer has been around for hundreds of years, but that does not justify praying TO Mary, it only shows the ignorant mentality of the papacy. I love saying the rosary. it keeps giving me insight to the LOVE of GOD the FATHER who give us HIS ONLY SON to safe us. GOD the SON who PRECIOUS BLOOD was given up so we can be HIS CHILDREN and GOD the HOLY SPIRIT who fills us with grace gifts and fruits as we walk our way HOME and I feel like I am honoring MARY who was FILLED with HER SON, OUR SAVIOR, NURTURED HIM as HE grow and WALKED HIS SORROW FILLED PATH to the CROSS which HE did because of all of us unworthy sinner. It is a beautiful prayer and MARY should be honor for it She said no way, we would not have been saved.

I think the bible has largely been unchanged the whole time. 66 books plus the apocrypha as reference reads vs cannon. Only in the trent were they “declared” inspired. Even my church reads from them. Not as cannon authority but simply historical reference. Jerome translated the Canon of Scripture and produced the Latin Vulgate, he labelled those books as Apocrypha. They were NEVER regarded as authoritative until the reformation.

I want to say because they are new at this bible thing. Catholic Church has been around for 2000 years so she knows the Bible backwards and forwards upside down sideways and inside out.

@@davido3026 I just spent some time looking into the deuterocanon, and I read Tobit as well. I came across some questions about which deuterocanonical books were selected and when, and some internal questions regarding certain deuterocanonical additions. The most prominent question I had was in regards to what happened with Baruch? In the declaration of the council of Rome, when it listed the books of the Old Testament and the New Testament; it didn't mention Baruch in either list. Baruch was likewise left out of the Latin Vulgate by Jerome along with the Letter of Jeremiah; and these were sporadically introduced to Latin Vulgate Bibles around the 9th century AD, if what I've read is correct. (Wikipedia) So if the councils are definitive it is a little odd that they would leave Baruch out of the list, and introduce it later on. There may be an explanation for it, but I can't really think of a good reason why they wouldn't include it in the definitive list at one point and add it later; especially because it was part of the septuigant. Tobit I did not realize until after reading that it isn't considered to be a true story, along with Judith, and apparently Esther as well (which sort of blew my mind because I still count that as historical); and that the "additions to Esther" are in fact known to contradict the wider story in places. All of this I read from the prefaces of a NAB and then afterwards from the Vatican website. I don't really see the particular value of including texts which are not actually counted to be true by even the Catholic Church in the canon of Scripture. When they are listed essentially as fables in the Bible and the Vatican website, why should I take them particularly seriously? The moral of Tobit honestly seems to be a moral that can be fairly easily discerned from the historical Scriptures, so I don't really understand what the addition of fables adds to the canon. This problem brings other texts from the deuterocanon into question, and I don't see why the others should be included either. The inclusion of Tobit and Judith reminds me somewhat of Titus 1:13-14 13 That testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith, 14 instead of paying attention to Jewish myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth. They honestly seem like Jewish myths, and if myths were included in the canon of scripture I get the feeling I should distance myself from the other books those were in the same category as. The early declaration not containing all of them, some of them being additions that contradict what they're added to, and some being directly admitted to be not true; it just seems like a bit more of a nuanced discussion than to say it was declared to be the RC way from the very start. It seems to be a more complicated issue than that. Anything you could tell me that would be helpful for any of this I'd appreciate it, I don't want to be too hasty. You have to ditch the idea that the Deuterocanonical books were added between old and new. There are actually 2 main versions of the Old Testament. The version that contains the Deutero books came from the Jews mostly not from Jerusalem and are greek speaking who accepted Jesus and converted. The other version that has missing Deutero books came from the Jews in Jerusalem who crucified Christ, because of their guilt they had not included the books that clearly tells Jesus is the messiah. The Catholics has also the Apocryphal books which are kept hidden because they contain secrets that are too dangerous because of the enormous number of the enemies Satan has created against the Catholic Church.

Don’t worry about having to look up the chapter and verse numbers. The content is what is important. Protestants know chapter and verse from the Bible, but that’s about all they know about it.

In my humble opinion, it's the best "original" Catholic Bible ( the only one version for 1600 years as Keith Nester said)

The only problem with the Douay version is that It can be difficult to understand today, since it uses English forms from 350 years ago when the translation was made. There are other, more modern versions which have been approved for use by the Catholic Church, of which my favorite by far is the Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition).The RSV(CE) is a modem revision of the King James version done by Protestants. Ironically, I have used it exclusively for five decades now and have not once been tempted to become Protestant because of it. I would say that the opposite is the case. Anyway, it is a very good version to use because the language is at once accessible and faithful to the sound and sense of the originals (no "personkind" for "mankind" and all of that sort of nonsense). Our Protestant friends did a bang-up job in this case, once they allowed back in the books taken out by Luther and company...

The DR and the Vulgate are the only two versions (perhaps excepting one in Greek) that you need.

We never omit that commandment we just split were God say I am the Lord thy God that is the first commandment and thou shall not worship any graven images is the second.

Each jewis sect has different order for the commandments as do the christians like some protestant says thou should not want thy neighbors possession but catholics make the distinction of of wife and possession because woman are not property.
