Absolutely they contradicted themselves. SOS didn't matter for Liberty, but an injury/SOS for FSU did. Then they said SMUs decision wasn't because of an injured QB and then penalized them for their SOS. Then the whole kept winning argument (which they didn't apply to FSU)
@rangersking6699
@rangersking6699 10 месяцев назад
Yes they have, but more importantly, they’ve set a precedent. Don’t play elite G5’s out of conference. Don’t play power fives unless they’re bottom dwellers or you need them for the buy games. Make sure your starters don’t get injured and pull them early in blowouts always. Focus on going a perfect 13-0 at all costs. The entire fabric of what the G5 was is dead. This is only going to encourage the fbs to split more because G5’s will be encouraged to avoid the big boys.

You said it before I could. If SMU had scheduled the Citadel instead of Oklahoma, they get the NY6 Bowl. What kind of precedent is that? Is that what they really want. They need to make divisions and have a path to the playoffs with the top 75 or so schools. BCS was better than this committee. Mike Leech called it years ago on the playoff committee. RIP Mike

It’s not even a “conspiracy theory” at this point: we’re going to a Power 2. Florida State is probably going to use whatever legal avenues and pay as much money as it takes to get into the SEC, along with Clemson and maybe some others. The ACC and Big 12 will be a second tier, and while their winners will get byes in the new playoff, they might end up being single bid conferences. They might get two teams in the event an undefeated team loses the conference championship game, since as far as I know, the conference title game winner gets the auto bid as happens in basketball. The committee’s decision was made to strongly persuade Florida State to leave the ACC, since they’re a strong program, and get them in the superior conference. We’re definitely heading to a split where the SEC and Big Ten teams leave the rest of the conferences and form some type of football-only super conference. On the field in the regular season, however, how compelling will those matchups be? For example, and speaking only for myself, I’d rather watch Arizona vs. Utah rather than Indiana vs. Illinois any day, so this is purely for financial reasons. Maybe this new conference gets arrogant and kicks out less successful programs and poaches some better programs from the remaining conferences; that’s why I say they would be “football only” and may not even bear the name of either of the Big 2. This would be even further in the future, but may well happen. It might even be a promotion-relegation system, but I doubt it for this reason: none of any of this realignment has been done with any consideration for on-field results. The committee just continued on with this precedent by leaving out an undefeated team that was supposed to be in the “cool club” in favor of another one they thought was cooler. I’m not sure what happens to the G5. There might just be a third FBS tier that forms with just them; I wouldn’t mind watching that, but I don’t think the G5 would get a fair TV deal. They would be on ESPN Plus with the FCS, and no one here wants that to happen. Essentially there would be four classifications of Division 1 football, much like a state high school system. I could live with any system that seems fair, but a bunch of people with a bunch of different agendas have different ideas of what “fair” is.

I find the contradiction of the CFP selecting Liberty, an undefeated conference champion, over SMU an obviously much better conference champion. Which is Objective vs Subjective, then contrast that to FSU / Alabama selection, which is the opposite; Subjective vs. Objective. Obviously SEC and their partner in the background ESPN prevailed. The fix is in. Trey, I actually typed this in before you got to your argument. 😬

The committee just doesn't care about the G5. They didn't watch the AAC championship game since SEC championship game was on at the same time. They took the intellectually lazy stance and went with the season record (surface level reasoning) instead of actually bothering to truly compare the teams. You could immediately tell this by both the outcome as well as the verbal explanations given in response to the ESPN crew asking questions. Oh well. SMU had a great season. Took care of business on its AAC farewell tour and left no doubt. SMU knows they're the best G5 team and doesn't care if some lazy committee doesn't agree. Now it can ride that momentum in recruiting and the transfer portal into the ACC in 2024. And SMU shouldn't have lost to TCU the way they did. The offense had never been worse in the season, and might have still had some growing pains in September breaking in a new QB. But things sure clicked in the second half of the season. If SMU had taken care of business back then, there'd be no controversy today. And TCU I'm sure could not beat SMU today at season's end. Time to whoop on TCU next season in Dallas!

As a Liberty Alum/Fan I'm super pumped. As an ACC fan I hate what they did to FSU. I would've left Texas out personally. If the ACC does ever break apart this is like a nail in the coffin not the final nail but implying that being from this conference isn't as valuable as the others isn't a good thing.
@aBrewster29

Kind of a moot point since the expanded playoff is coming. I don’t know that considerations like record and SOS can be objectively weighted. The argument for FSU being undefeated against a softer schedule is a glorified version of the Boise State/UCF situation. At the same time, FSU did all that be expected to play a tough slate. Not their fault that LSU, UF, and Clemson all had down years.
@sighburrevil7088
@sighburrevil7088 10 месяцев назад
Not a moot point at all. Don't think they can't screw it up even in a 12 team field, based on this precedent, what's to stop them from putting in a 7-5 Big10/SEC team over a 10-2 Acc/Big12 team? Look at the bigger picture.
@aBrewster29
@aBrewster29 10 месяцев назад
@@sighburrevil7088 you’re not wrong, but when you remember that the general idea is deciding which teams should get a shot at the title, the debate over the 12th best team is of less importance than the 4th. Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State were all just a few points shy of going undefeated against stiffer competition. I think your 7-5 vs 10-2 scenario is a bit hyperbolic, considering the fact that the current difference is only one very close loss and all the weird head to head stuff. I think Texas is in because they beat another team that warranted inclusion. Had Texas’ loss come against Michigan or Washington the Longhorns would be in the outside looking in. One other point-all a team can do is schedule tough games and win. FSU did that and it wasn’t enough here. It will be enough under the expanded playoff. As for a controversy between 11-1 and 10-2 teams, both had a loss which one gets left out is less controversial since they can point back to the opportunity they had to win. For the record, I would’ve taken FSU over Bama. Noles deserve a shot. Three freaking blue bloods on that schedule, and they all had down years. And then the QB injuries…I just hate to see a team punished for that kind of stuff. These marquee matchups are supposed to be high risk-reward propositions. Bama’s chance was against Texas. Georgia’s was against Bama. When you lose on that stage you go to the back of the line vs an undefeated FSU.

Trey what doesn't make sense to me is how come the group of 5 doesn't get more than one bid in the college football playoff? For college basketball every March madness the "haves" have to prove they are better than the "have nots". Most of the time the haves come out on top. But you get a few teams from lower confrences that make runs to the sweet 16, elite 8 and in a really special year, the final four. But most importantly the teams play each other to determine the outcome. Why can't this happen in college football. You can't convince me that SMU, JMU, Boise St, and Liberty couldn't give elite teams a run for their money. . .if not pull off an upset (or two). Because of what's on the line it would be bigger than when Boise beat Oklahoma. If it works in all other college sports, why is college football scared of the UNDERDOG!

Why does the SOS argument matter with Bama vs Florida State? You have two power teams playing power opponents. If you ask me, it makes sense to use that as a tie breaker. Liberty vs SMU is two non-power schools, with one scheduling money games in which they lost. Again, you win one of those games and you are in. How many bowl teams did SMU beat? The CFP Selection Committee will always be biased. It cannot be fixed using criteria while the core system remains the same. For example, what is SOS? How is it determined? Is it equally applied? For me, SOS political in that preseason polls impact SOS. Why should that matter will all the Coaching Staff and Transfer Player changes each season. I am not sure SOS can be fixed to anyone’s satisfaction. I think Net Points matter. You might lie total TDs. It’s not definitive. This is where my MI Officer training has out side the box value even when applied to a non-military topic like college football rankings. The G5/G6 should play all Conference games 1ST. In this way all Conference rankings will be known. The weekend after the Conference season ends will be Championship weekend. The G5/G6 will have its own OOC Selection Committee. The will have from Sunday following regular season until Tuesday at noon to announce all OOC schedules for that year. Teams already qualifying for a Bowl game get scheduled 1ST, then Teams which could make a Bowl game with 6 wins, and lastly, Teams not qualifying for a Bowl. The Teams in Championship games get 3 OOC games. The Teams not in Championship games get 4 OOC games. During Championship weekend, Teams not playing get a BYE. Championship game teams get a BYE the following week. To transition to this system, G5/G6 schools will only schedule other G5/G6 schools. When all schedules are set, all contracts will be canceled and Conference games will start 1ST. If you applied that to this season, this is what the OOC schedules for Liberty and SMU would look like: Liberty: Memphis, @Ohio U, UNLV. SMU: Jacksonville State, @Air Force, Coastal Carolina.

Trey I totally agree with your synopsis comparing how the committee ranked Bama vs. FSU compared to how they did Liberty vs. SMU, but there is an exception that SMU lost two games. Losing 2 has been kind of the backbreaker for getting in traditionally. All your points still stand regarding the fact that the selection process was inconsistent, but it would be a much clearer parallel and double standard if SMU only had one loss, and it was to another single loss team. They lost two, including one to a TCU team that did not get bowl eligible.

Has any reporter asked the questions that you're asking to the committee? Everyone so focused on Florida State and Alabama that I feel like this topic that you brought up just gets swept under the rug, because not as many people care. I've yet to hear the commissioner talk about it, or explain why they reversed course. I was thinking the exact same thing you were thinking when they announced it, and the double standard. The problem with this four team format the whole time has been the committee. One week it's resume, the next week it's the best team. There is no consistency as to which criteria will be used and they just pick and choose whatever team they want and then justify it. I hate when things aren't settled on the field and settled by men locked up in rooms in secret meetings. That's where the conspiracy theories come from, And then you add in that Alabama has gotten in every time it's been between them and somebody else. The committee was in a no-win situation with this year's playoffs, so I sympathize a little bit. Nothing they could do would be viewed as correct by everyone. But as you said we just want consistency, and we didn't get it, even in the top four picks. If they had just picked the four best teams then they would have picked Georgia over texas. It feels like they kind of compromised and did partial resume partial best teams. I can understand the reasoning why, because no one really want to see Florida State get destroyed but I still think Florida State probably deserve the shot. We had Oregon as double digit favorites in Georgia as big favorites over Alabama, and they both lost. That shows us that just because we think a team is better and deserves a spot, they aren't always better. Human bias is going to be in anything we do, but they seem to think they're immune from it

They do deserve to be in but I wouldn't say they deserve to be in over Alabama. Why? Alabama has harder schedule, SOS, and a better resume. One more thing their QB isn't injured and offense doesn't look incompetent. The only thing FSU have over Alabama is that they are undefeated.
