The Doctor saved Gallifrey during the Moffat era and the Master destroyed Gallifrey in the Chibnall era!
@poplops1
@poplops1 8 месяцев назад
@@bruceyang2494 Both cheapen the sacrifice which was established in the RTD era IMO. With Moffat and saving Gallifrey, it makes the sacrificial decision the Doctor had to make insignificant. The show goes through nearly 10 years of the Doctor coping with the loss of his people and planet and then it turns out all that time it was still around but just in a pocket universe. With Chibnall destroying Gallifrey, you get a whole arc about the Doctor changing history to save his planet instead of destroying it and then Chibnall destroys it off-screen for no reason other than the Master having a temper tantrum. And not to mention the complete reversal of the Master's redemption arc across S9-10 but that's a whole other can of worms. Also, the possibility of Gallifrey being destroyed by the hands of one person unaided by no great weapon is mind-bogglingly asinine. The Doctor needed the Moment, a weapon nicknamed the Galaxy Eater, to destroy Gallifrey and the Daleks needed the largest war campaign in the history of the universe. What did the Master need? Seemingly nothing by the looks of it.

To be fair, they usually are. Rose saw the destruction of the entire earth and then was attacked by zombies and ghosts. Martha got the easiest XD She got witches and pollution, all which resulted in a happy ending with maybe a few deaths overall. The doctor did not destroy Pompeii Yes, through his actions Pompeii was destroyed, however, whatever action the doctor took, Pompeii would have been destroyed, in every meaningful way. The people of Pompeii would still have died or been converted by the Pyroviles, the settlement of Pompeii would still have ceased to exist in any way but name So the Doctor did not destroy it, The Doctor saved the world.

Technically Pompeii was not really destroyed. Sure, the city was destroyed and teh people died. But Thanks to the pyroclastic flow, the whole city was immortalized, to be in history forever and forever remembered by the world. Had he not let Vesuvius erupt, Pompeii would never be a great part of history as we know it. ^^ So technically the city lives on in a way.

Actually, RTD explained it - when the Doctor saved Caecilius, he changed the history so time itself straightened it by having that same man (dna of him, or the form of him, as you like) die with his whole family in Torchwood. But the Doctor said "To hell with time" and took the control - wore that face in spite of time.

because! the doctor doesn't go with Martha back to the 1930's to Manhattan where the Cult of Skaro is currently located, thus Darlek Caan doesn't use the temporal shift to meet up with Davros and tells them how to do it. Thus pyrovilia isn't taken and pompeii happens as usual.

The doctor could either stand by and watch the whole earth be eventually destroyed, or (literally) kill those 20,000 people to save the rest of the world. By pulling that lever though, he became responsible for a terrible catastrophe in human history. So the question is, did he make the right decision?

This is the first episode when Donna shows WHY she's special. When she tells the Doctor, "Don't worry about us." And again, when she places her hand over his on the lever that needs to be pushed. It's Pompeii... or the world.

You can see this was almost like the Doctor destroying Gallifrey all over again

Wait a second, so the 12th doctor was actually present undercover in this episode? i thought he just got the inspiration to take that face as his on his next regeneration. Damn, wibbly wobbly timey whimey indeed.

I assume that's a reference to my comment. I was merely postulating a theory, not stating a fact. Though I can see the confusion since I jokingly phrased it as a fact. As far as the facts go, The Girl Who Died confirms that Caecilius in The Fires of Pompeii was the inspiration for his face but, as fun as that'd be, there isn't really anything to suggest that Caecilius was in fact the 12th Doctor.

There's a certain tragedy that the Doctor isn't just ensuring Pompeii's destruction, but as far as he knows is destroying the Pyrovile race. Far as he knows right now, these are the last of their kind. Fortunately, we learn that Pyrovilia survives, just taken out of time. Funny thing happens before/later

The doctor with the lever must have been remembering his choice to destroy gallifrey and was frozen until donna showed him he wasn't alone this time

remember when he was in a similar position in Series 1 (Parting of the Ways with the Daleks) and he couldn't do it. Donna, is what made him be able to do this

I think back to this episode about how it forced the Doctor to make a hard choice, then I think about how in the Day of the Doctor he just got to deus ex machina away the hardest choice he ever made.

In this I always see the line form day of the doctor “the man who regrets”, you can see he’s hurt to have to kill a large number of innocent people ’again’

That look in the Doctor's eye, it says it all. It's the Time Wars, it was his choice that condemned billions to burn and die.

I wonder if at this moment, the Doctor has a glimpse flash back to the War Doctor when he had that decision to destroy Gallifrey

This one, and actually The Girl Who Waited, both illustrate that saving everyone isn't always possible. Can only pick one timeline.

What music plays when Donna puts her hands on the Doctors just before pushing the lever?

Can't stop thinking about how the last time the Doctor made this choice, he "wiped out" the Time Lords and the Daleks to end the Time War. Of course we know he saved Gallifrey at the last moment in a different dimension and while the Dalek ships did get caught in their own crossfire, numerous Dalek forces survived (a lone Dalek falling through time in "Dalek", the Dalek Emperor, Dalek Sec and the Cult of Skaro and the "Metaltrons" who infiltrated the British military in WW2, to name a few). But at least this time he had help making that choice.

Despite the Day of Doctor not being created for years to come, that scene echoed the Doctor activating the Moment perfectly.
