For anyone without college please do not expect to get two job offers with just this and certainly not very quickly, Assuming he has an associates degree at this point + I'm sure his resume also highlights he is currently going for his BA, those things will instantly leap frog him over people switching sectors or younger people without the schooling. Don't wanna kill anyone's optimism but definitely have realistic expectations.

Very true, this story mostly applies to young and junior or aspirational tech professionals. Using this Google IT Support certificate later on as a stepping stone for a career switch will result in a very different story.

I am 60 years old. It took a few months, but I got through the google IT certificate. Got a kick out of the network materials. I read that companies, like walmart, get notified of people that complete the material. Nobody has contacted me about it. I was taking google IT for python automation, but I just got sick of it and don't believe I am going to get offered work in automation.

Congratulations on the two job offers when you're done with college! I've been in IT for 9 years working in data centers. While I don't have a bachelor's I have experience. Cybersecurity is something I'd love to get into eventually. Just need to chart a path for me there. It's a little tough out here in the tech sector at the moment. I got caught up in a mass layoff so currently questing for that next job myself. Good luck with whatever job you take on here soon!

As a veteran that's been working in various roles on and off in IT for over 20 years, I can honestly tell you that nowadays that a Computer Science or even Cybersecurity college degree ALONE will NOT generally land you an entry level IT job, even this Google IT cert mentioned here is NOT enough. You COULD land an entry lev Help Desk role IF you have a personal connection their through school, friends or family but that's the exception. Post pandemic, tech related college degrees have become overrated and do NOT carry the same weight that once did anymore, NOT saying their worthless but not really as valuable. A BS in Computer Science gains MORE value when paired with say 1-3 years IT exp and recent A+ cert. For a newbie or a career changer with little or no IT experience, it's ONLY going to come down to EXPERIENCE IS KING and entry level IT certs like CompTIA A+ or Net+ following close behind as this is what you'll need to land that first entry level Help Desk job. The HARDEST part for those new to IT is interviewing for and landing that first IT Support (Help Desk or Desktop Support) job. And please do NOT jump on the newbie Cybersecurity bandwagon WITHOUT at least 1 to 3 years IT experience and at least one or two entry level IT certs! You need to understand what a network is and how it works BEFORE you can secure it, right? You need to understand how a PC works together with all its components, its Operating System, various apps and the connection to the Internet BEFORE you can secure it and prevent attacks, right? You see where I'm going with this... Learn the IT fundamentals first, get SOME experience and THEN consider a low level Cybersecurity role after maybe 3 to 5 years IN.

Yo Ben, how did you find the time to study up on IT/cybersecurity stuff like this? I’m a junior majoring in MIS and I’m interested in getting into the cybersecurity field, but it’s difficult to make time for learning that stuff. My MIS classes don’t go into it very much, and I have started the Google IT Support Certificate, but I feel like I won’t have enough knowledge of the field to gain an internship next summer due to school and work taking up so much of my time.

Do you think it’s worth it to complete the IT support cert before diving into the Cybersecurity cert? I’m looking for a new career in my late 30’s and I’ve always had in interest, but lack experience just the little that I’ve learned poking around. Now I’m considering completing the IT cert first and trying to find and entry level position in IT while completing my Cybersecurity and getting some exp under my belt.
@JJFlores197
@JJFlores197 9 месяцев назад
I would say yes, its worth having either this (Google IT cert or CompTIA A+). Cybersecurity is something that requires a solid understanding of computers and their hardware and software. If you try to jump straight into cybersec without much knowledge of computers, you're not going to do well. Think of it this way: If you want to work on engines and engine performance, it greatly helps to understand the car as a whole and all the theory behind how engines works and all of its supporting systems as well as all the other components in a car.

I was 33yo when I got my Comptia A+, which helped me land a entry-level IT job. Now I'm 38 working as a local gov IT technician with a 6 figure salary and gov employee benefits, NO COLLEGE DEGREE. I was working at a BestBuy before this... you will most likely have contract jobs at first through recruiters for a couple of years build up experience then you can find something permanent.
