Exactly the solution I’m looking for…when I’ve tried to sum in other ways my stereo chorus disappears, I assume due to phasing problems. Oddly, I loose the room reverb on the ACS-1 when I sum also…again I’m guessing that’s a phase issue. Looks like Canvas will solve these issues.

Great video. It’s great that we have new options for DI’ing equipment and running mono or stereo rigs. Line isolators are fairly new being essentially a transformer based DI that gives a flat frequency response, with a unity gain low-impedance signal output. This signal can travel long distances through balanced cables with no degradation in quality. A traditional passive DI does that but with the signal being decreased to a microphone level output ready to go into the front end of a desk through balanced cables. It should be said that with passive (Transformer based) DI boxes, they are not all created equally. This is the same for active DI’s but they shouldn’t really be compared against the Walrus Canvas. Cheap DI boxes can have very basic transformers within them that can alter the character of the source material. Better quality DI boxes have higher quality transformers and better shielding to keep the signal as close to the source. I’ve been using a Radial ProD2 DI box for about 8 years in a band. I use it for sending my modeller based guitar signal and keyboards, both in mono to the desk. I get my monitor mix sent to my feet through my QSC K10.2 monitor. I’ve never had a sound engineer complain of too low signal level. They take the XLR in and put it through a mic preamp on the input channel as with any traditional passive DI box Saying that, I have options to adjust the signal from the keyboard and the guitar modeller before the DI, but I don’t run them very hot. The reason that I don’t run a stereo rig live? I want to hear it, my band members need some of it in their monitors, and I want everyone listening to hear all of it. For the gigs I do, mono is definitely the way to go. The stereo chorus pedal is a great example of why. In stereo, you can have audience members on one side of the stage only hearing the unaffected side of the chorus pedal, and those in the other side only hearing vibrato. Only The people standing right in the middle of the sound stage hear what you are trying to convey I think it’s great to have options but I feel that running a stereo rig for most gigs is a vanity project for most guitar players. If the sound installation in the room has been designed so everyone can hear the stereo image perfectly then go stereo every time. Most rooms are not like this unfortunately. The Canvas is an interesting and great sounding product. It definitely gives people another option to get their signal to the desk. I play guitar in another band and have the pleasure and privilege of running through my 18watt Marshall clone amp at volume (mostly for festival gigs). That just needs a microphone, and the sound engineer does the rest. I have a Boss CE-2 clone (mono) chorus pedal and it sounds exceptional.

Hi, I have a question. I usually run 2 DI signals, 1 before my effects and 1 after, to keep my low end intact (bass). If there is only 1 FOH line available, could I use the sum function on the canvas to combine the 2 signals into 1 DI line to FOH? So chain would be bass -> canvas input 1 -> canvas through 1 -> effects -> canvas input 2 -> canvas through 2 -> amp And then use 1 DI line to send a mix of both signals
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic 2 года назад
Hey! I had to think about this one for a bit haha. So the canvas only sums the Thru channel and not the xlr outs. So you could do that loop via the inputs and thrus but only have the bass isolated line one and then bass with effects line 2. To do this, you’d have to have a splitter after your bass to go into your board and straight into the canvas, sum both via Thru and use that line out to FOH

The sum button fixes that issue only at home. As it only sums on the thru outs. If you play out and get to a place that they have no extra room on the board. Or just no xtra cables Ran, It doesn’t sum the XLR side. Big downside. Huge miss needs a 2.0 with XLR sum.

Hey! Yea I’ve used an Analog Effects Stereo to Mono sum passive patch bay. They are really affordable and can go before the Canvas in a situation where you still need to use XLR out!
@Hamppzah
@Hamppzah 2 года назад
It seems really great. The only thing I don't really understand is dealing with a situation like this 0:44. Since the stereo sum only sums the thru outputs, the thru outputs must surely also be balanced? In other words, 0:44, sound guy wants to go mono instead of stereo - you press the button and give him one TRS-cable from the thru instead of two XLR (L+R) cables from the normal outputs? Thanks!
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic 2 года назад
It is! I’m loving it! And yea that was just a little skit I did with the monitor engineer haha. So sometimes I’ll have to sum stereo to go into a single amplifier, so that would go out of the Thru and into the amp. In a direct in situation, I’d have to go out of the Thru and into his mixer or into a mono DI that engineers usually have already if they are asking you to go mono. So then the canvas is only acting as a stereo sum to mono!
@Hamppzah
@Hamppzah 2 года назад
@@nobesmusic It's a funny skit but also a very real scenario, haha :D I understand the solution, but does that nice loud base volume stay as it would when going out of the normal outputs? I may be explaining myself poorly but basically what I mean is do you still get all that headroom you talked about when going mono to mixer (I'm curious since I thought it's the balanced XLR that makes it possible in the first place) Thanks and sorry if I'm being confusing, just want to make sure before I buy it!

That’s an awesome video and great options. I’m looking at this pedal for what I need. So I used to have Kemper and I used one main output direct to my IEM so I could hear exactly what I was playing and then I would take an output from the desk to hear the singer. I’m now going back to pedalboard and proper amps. My plan with this or the mono version (Y cable for mono) would be Instrument - pedalboard - input canvas - canvas thru to amp DI out - Y cable - one to IEM and the other to FOH for mono Stereo version Instrument - pedalboard - canvas in left dry canvas in right effect - (sum activated) Left thru to Amp Left DI out to FOH Right DI out to IEM You think this would work ?

So you could do it in a way where you go stereo into the canvas than stereo out directly to your interface and then mono through to your amp and then that out of your amp into you interface. so you’d have 3 signals, the stereo signal and the mono after your amp. You can then throw in an amp simulator plug in afterwards on that stereo signal. Otherwise I think the best bet would be to have an amp simulator pedal like the ACS1 before the canvas in your pedal chain so that your interface can record that stereo signal with the amp simulator sound and feel. And then you can still go out of the summed mono through to your tone master but just be careful with the volume and the treble. Using a amp sim into a tube amp can be dangerous due to the volume and output.

what is the difference between this canvass and the buffer??are they have the same purpose??
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic 2 года назад
Hey! So the buffer is usually something that starts at the beginning of your chain and deals with impedance and stuff. So basically it handles the output of your guitar and sends a solid signal all throughout your pedal board. The canvas goes at the end of your chain and is meant be a DI or a line isolator, so whenever you unbalanced outs, it will balance them and translate them to balanced so that the best signal you have going to FOH. Although, that does sound like what a buffer would sort of do at the end of your chain, they are different!

Why the cavas over the DISO + ?
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic 2 года назад
Well I personally dig the Canvas because it was definitely curated with the ACS1 in mind, which I have. I also love the look and the smaller footprint! But they essential for the same thing. I believe the only thing different is that you can pay extra for a mod on the Diso+ to sum the stereo signal to mono via xlr instead of just the Thru!

@@nobesmusic More specifically, it's going through the Mic Preamp of the recording interface, right? The Mic Preamp is what's actually boosting the signal and accounts for the difference in level from the ACS-1 example and the Canvas example. In LI Mode, the Canvas is keeping the signal at the same level (1:1) and balancing it. In DI Mode, it reduces it to Mic Level. It's cool that it can do both, it's a great device, but I do feel like it's important to understand how the Mic Preamp is playing a role in your comparisons if you want to do proper gain staging.
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic 2 года назад
@@jmkmusicpedals yea totally! Whenever I’d record without the canvas I’d just boost the gain from the interface, but for this comparison I made sure I left the volume on the interface the same for each sound example!

Unless you have your pedals setup incorrectly, I think you are describing a problem that doesn’t exist. If you are running some kind of IR pedal, you will have line level or pretty close to it coming out of your board. A passive DI uses a transformer to balance and impedance match the signal to the mic pre. Typically a DI will drop the signal down to mic level. All of the other inputs on stage are mic level, which is obviously not a problem. However, running a line level signal in the same multi core snake can introduce crosstalk on the other lines. In other words, your line level guitar signal can bleed into the other channels through the wires in the snake. How much probability depends on the length of the snake and other factors. Will you notice a higher dynamic range in a live setting by running line level to FOH? Probably not. There is too much ambient noise from lighting fans and other gear that it makes no difference. Plus, some consoles will need to pad the input so it doesn’t clip the converter on the input. You send a hot signal and then they turn it down with a pad at the board. What have you really gained here? Also, your DI used for comparison is a cheap ACTIVE DI and the Canvas is passive. Not the same thing at all. Generally you would use a passive DI for an active source, like a bass with a built in preamp or a keyboard. And you would use an active DI with a passive source, like a bass with no built in preamp. Sending a line level signal to an active DI can overdrive the transformer and other circuits. If you are having issues with an extremely low signal coming from your board through a regular passive DI, I’d guess that you don’t have your output high enough on your IR pedal or whatever you are using to do cab sim. If you signal through the Canvas is about the same as all the other mics when it is set to Line ISO, I’d guess you are fine using it that way. But in my experience as a FOH engineer and guitar player, that has not ever been the case for me. All the modeling pedals and IR pedals can output close to pro line level and a results DI is 100% fine. The only thing I can think is that some of your other effects pedals cannot handle line level inputs so you are running the signal super low. I use a Meris Mercury 7 and that can only handle +12.5 dBu on the input. My Headrush pedal can output +18 dBu so I have to run the output at about 3/4 to avoid clipping the Meris. Still, a +12.5 output is line level and DI mode on the Canvas is the better option if you are going into a typical mic pre. Hope that helps.
@nobesmusic
@nobesmusic Год назад
Hey man! Wow that was a lot haha. I appreciate the input (pun intended). So the canvas is not only a DI but also a line isolator. So simply put you use the DI mode for a high impedance source and the Line Isolator mode for a low impedance source. The ACS1 is an example of this. So the line isolator helps to not transfer unbalanced to balanced, but also remain full volume as the DI would lower the amount volume. And your totally right in your last paragraph. I am running my ACS1 into my delay and reverb so I can only keep the ACS1 at around noon before it starts to clip the input of the other pedals. Hope that helps too!

As one who has toured and recorded for 40 plus years, I’d just point this out. The output level is the responsibility of the sound guy - not the musician. You know what he does? Turns a knob to increase your input into his board. Ok this box can increase it a bit and fine. But never in my career have I had a soundman tell me my output was insufficient and I’ve used direct boxes as outs for years. My last touring experience was with The Miracles. We actually had a sound guy who was with Michael Jackson for years. He loved my sound and had no issue with my output from a direct box. Just sayin….. Nice marketing line but in reality it’s no big deal and musicians have been playing without a device like this for decades. This is a perfect example of creating a need where there isn’t one. It’s also passive so if you play a passive instrument it’s pretty much useless for driving a long signal.

Hey Bill! Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s honor to have vets like you checking out the channel. You are totally right, this product is not necessary at all. I’ve still used my gear without the canvas at times for recording and playing live. As gear lovers, we are known for going above and beyond needs because it’s just fun and it gives us joy. I think one small detail to point out is, that the Canvas really is tailored to those who are using the newer amp and cab simulators like the Iridium and the ACS1, which are relatively newer products in comparison to what you’ve probably used throughout the majority of your career. So outside of the those newer products, this really just new hip DI/Line Isolator. So if you ever get into the newer amp and cab simulators, I’d definitely recommend the canvas!

Could you please explain the point about Canvas being passive therefore making it useless for driving long signals? I thought it's creting balanced XLR outs, which are distance-proof and help help alot compared to what TS outs of the last pedal would be capable of even with a jack to xlr adapter.
